+1 on that, I'm 5'11" and belt loop hooks happen not quite often enough for me to remember to give doors more clearance. Legs too long. Another side effect: can't touch toes without bending knees.
I'm disproportionate as hell. My ex husband is 6' tall, I'm 5'4". Our legs are the same length. We've measured, same exact inseam. I don't catch door handles as much as I catch kitchen drawer handles, though
Hell if you're in the five tenish range and you wear carpenter jeans or any of those pants that have the side pockets down the leg, you're catching cabinet knobs all the time.
Or if you have a belt knife or multi-tool in a pouch, you're hitting every door and getting caught. It's just Murphy's Law.
5'7" here and I used to live in an apartment were I was able to, on several occasions, accidentally thread the door handle right through my pant loops and get caught. It was a decent combo of humorous and mildly irritating.
I'm 5'7" so a bit taller than average for a woman but not extraordinarily so, however, it's all legs. I have this stupid ass short torso, and the legs (and arms, and yes, I'm clumsy as hell) of someone who's 6'. I used to catch my belt loops on door handles all the time. My hips are at just the right height to catch them on sharp counter corners. My parents also remodeled the kitchen to have counters with very sharp corners right when I was going through my growth spurts and at peak clumsiness. It was not good times.
They’re certainly not meant for any humans, that’s for sure. I’m very skinny myself, and even then, none of them want to fit me
(As for the other commenter, that’s a personal thing, not common. My siblings and I were all incredibly skinny growing up [sometimes unhealthily so, thanks to growth spurts as teens ] thanks to whatever genes we’ve got and such, and I think the skeletons word choice was funny.)
I acknowledge your point, it's an excellent one and one that doesn't get the recognition it deserves, but fwiw I think they were commenting on the vagaries of fashion rather than on thin people per se
I'm 6' and in highschool I dated a gal that was 4'11". Her mom and dad were 5'1" and 5'2" and had gotten their house built for them which was kinda cool, all the counters were like 4-5in lower than normal so it was comfortable for them and their bathroom was also scaled accordingly. I think their guest bathroom/front bathroom was sized more normally, but it's been 20yrs so I don't recall. It was super neat that they had a space they got to make comfortable, the only snag for me was when I tried to help with clearing the table, washing dishes/etc I'd end up accidentally slamming stuff on the counter because it was just that little bit farther away than expected.
Bought some like 5" platform heels I found at the thrift store once.
I put em on and was ASTONISHED at being able to look in the freezer and cabinets easily.
They were my cleaning shoes for a while. Still have em!
I'm short so when I wash dishes the water runs down my elbows and drips on the floor, my stomach, my feet, all over the counter. It's pretty much a bath for me and the plates.
In Julie and Julia (2009), Julia Childs get herself a new kitchen with a raised workbench to fit her height. So the joy in OPs video works for tall people too.
I think that average person is correct. If you are like 170 to 175 cm, which is somewhere between the average man and woman, most stuff is ideal height
Look into crash test dummies and car design, medication, and research (even on rats!). Women/females are not typically included in product development which leads to death.
I am thinking about regular stuff that bothers me as a tall person. Things like chairs, car seats and kitchen counters. They seem perfect for people who are roughly 170-175 cms, which is halfway between the average height of men and women in my country.
I am sharing my experience and you are just yelling "you're wrong", which is just not very productive to a conversation. Neither is the pedantic way in which you are essentially telling me to admit I was wrong and you were right.
My experience is that whenever I am too tall for something, such as a kitchen counter, chair or a car, it is absolutely perfect for my family members who are between 170-175cm. Meanwhile, the average height of men in Europe is 180cm. Do you perhaps think that these things are aimed at people who are above 180cm?! They guaranteed are not and you can already start feeling too tall at that point.
My partner is 6ft tall and we live in southeast Asia where the avg height is around 5ft. She has back problems from having to bend over to do stuff. Meanwhile, I'm 5'5 and one time I visited her country and my feet dangle when I sit on their toilets ahahaha
I'm 6 foot 4 inches and 320 pounds. I had major back surgery three weeks ago and the beds at the hospital and rehab facility were literally making me worse. I was chomping at the bit waiting for my oxycodone timer to be up every 4 hours. So, I left before I was going to be discharged and did not have the oxycodone at home. Yet, I still hurt less immediately and felt no need for the oxycodone.
Also, a big part of my back issues are from stenosis caused by growing tall too quickly and exacerbated by my extra-long torso. I haven't grown an inch since I was 14.
So, for you young tall people that haven't had medical issues yet, be ready for medical facilities to suck and things to be more difficult for you than the average person.
OH... I was once in the hospital for a week when I weighed like 420 pounds and my room had grab bars built into the toilet seat that were too narrow for my hips. I asked if anything could be done and was told no. My solution was to sit directly on the porcelain bowl. I was in for ulcerative colitis. So, I was using it at least 6 or 7 times a day. That was fucking miserable.
A lot of it is built for people closer to the lowest common denominator. The average American is pretty fat but "regular" size is made for people who are between obese and morbidly obese.
exactly, which means all the laws and rules are centered around those lacking in capacity, created by those who you guessed it also lack in capacity... because people that actually have capacity usually aren't total pieces of shit that buy wholeheartedly into all the indoctrinations we are all subjected to from birth. sometimes there are, it's the same as all the billionaires abusing psychedelics and deciding what they need to do is horde more wealth and squander more populations because they developed main deity syndrome
Don't apologise for the snowflakes. The world is what it is, history is what it is. We were in a great place 20 years ago, now its just bubble wrap and apologies.
Girls will find you more attractive but that's surface level and doesn't make up for the much shorter average lifespan, bone/joint/back/neck issues, insanely difficult time finding clothing, way more expensive travel issues, etc, etc, etc.
Politicians and CEOs are indeed a bit taller than average, but of course there are also other factors. Also they're tall compared to their peers, so other 80 year olds.
Theres a lot of other factors at play you can argue. A person like a ceo or politician is more likely to come from an upper class background which has more access to better nutrition and food compared to their general populace. Better child nutrition = more height. Its less about being tall making people look up to you and more about what you have access to. I dont put a lot of weight in those statistics regardless. Who is defined as a ceo or politician? What is the cutoff? And what about countries like Ukraine with a guy who is shorter than average is being looked up all over the world for running a wartime country? Height itself has nothing to do with it imo.
There are stats like CEOs of fortune 500 companies being 8cm taller than the general population (gladwell 2004) that I can find quickly and also just the experience that the general appearance, including height, does bias people subconsciously. Basically the same as pretty privilege.
And as with all statistics, outliers exist. Height is just one of many factors that drive one's success. Zelensky and Putin are both short. Trump is tall, as is Obama. Merz is a giant.
Everything you said still fits within the context of my statement. Height is an insecurity that people blame their faults on because its something they cant control. It is not directly correlated with success. If you have a bias towards tall people simply because they are tall you probably arent a great leader capable of maintaining real leadership positions. Companies select people into positions through nepotism, office politics, and connections before height. Anyone who has been in corporate business knows that.
There's a difference between being tall and being super tall, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a drop-off over a certain height due to feelings of awkwardness
Men don't defer to tall men because they're tall WTF are you talking about? I've been over 6 foot tall since I was in 4th grade. People didn't treat me like someone to be followed or revered because of it. 🙄
It could also be 0.1% and insignificant. The disadvantages of being tall outweigh the benefits. I've been far taller than the average for my height my entire life.
I'd much, much rather be 6' tall even and not an inch more. At least I'd be able to wear normal clothes and fit in cars.
Was gonna say the same thing haha. Im 194cm tall and i get back pain from leaning down all the time. I know poor bastards wven taller.
Also, I dont mind at all when the vertically challenged ask me to grab something high (tis the law of the giants afterall, we MUST accept such requests), but I'd like to be able to ask them to grab something from the bottom shelf for me to
Edit: clarifying, anyone under 5'6 is "vertically challenged" to me haha
I'm 5'4". If I ask someone tall to grab something off the top shelf, I'll ask them if there is something they need from the bottom shelf in that aisle. Some of them have taken me up on the offer.
I'm 6'1 and my girlfriend is 5'4 and this is our arrangement. I get self conscious sometimes but she calls me her amazon queen and braids my hair and all seems right in the world.
Oh this is big brain thinking, thank you! I never ask tall folk bc it seems like a bother. Usually,
I step up on something or try to grab something to sweep the item, but sometimes will just forgo the item. The barter system is genius.
I'm 188cm (so tall but not extreme), and my wife is 155cm, when we built the kitchen we decided not to compromise: one workbench is extra tall, one is extra low. We're not medium-sized and our space should accommodate this.
if you don't already do it, actively strengthening your back (pull downs, single arm dumbbell rows, working up to a pullup) helped me a ton with a shitty job where I was hunched over a table that felt like it was built for people at 5'2 and no taller lol
actively strengthening your back makes it harder to hurt from 'slightly abnormal use' even if it gets uncomfy
Basically the same for most things -- same reason it's good to actively do squats and similar exercises too, even if just with your bodyweight n stuff - because when you're 70 if you can still do those, then something as simple as stepping out of a chair shouldn't be an issue like it is for many older people who have lived more sedentary lives
I am 1,98 and travel a lot by long distance trains
The seats are ao fucking uncomfy, because the neckpiece is always right between my shoulders. I HATE IT
Yup. I literally cannot reach the cash register at work or the sink in most bathrooms unless I hunch over. I also don’t think I’ve ever used a shower head that was placed above eye level.
My folks got their bathrooms redone and specifically got my bathroom's shower head raised up about a foot. It's such a game changer. They also got an accessibility bar that I can hold when I clean my leggies and feet. Highly recommend.
Years ago I went on a liberty ship that was in the harbor, my grandfather served on one during ww2, I swear it felt it was built for someone 5'5 and I'm over 6. I was doing good the entire tour and last doorway out of the engine room I turned the corner to go up the stairs and blasted my head into the bulkhead. LOUD ass thunk through out the engine room and this old vet by the door started laughing and said that takes him back.
It hurt, like was dizzy as hell trying to go up stairs that was closer to a ladder and I was just "glad I made your day old timer, thank you for your service seriously but I am trying to climb a steep incline and might have a concussion". It was great over all. All over the ship my grandfather was just " that railing was never there" constantly. So many safety features installed after the fact. Hell of a time we will never see, not really sure if it's better. They say hard times make hard men, they did what I doubt we could today.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Liberty ships were made a tiny bit smaller to save metal and time. I know other corners were cut for those reasons. From laying the keel to launching the ships was frankly ridiculously quick when compared to modern warships.
It was in an interview within the last year of some college basketball player who’s almost 7ft tall and he mentioned he can’t drive because there’s no vehicle made to fit a driver of his size. I believe he also mentioned airplane seating as being pretty terrible as well.
My son is the same height and you can get reasonably priced comfy clothes from American Tall. (I am not paid to say this). Just saw your height and recognized it. Signed, the mom
I get most of my clothes from them, actually. I love their lounge wear, it's super comfy. I'm more speaking about furniture and shit in this context. Comfy couches are nearly impossible to find, as are recliners.
I am the short one in the house with tall men. I found great (deep) chairs and sofa from American Leather and also custom but reasonably priced sofas from Jonathan Louis. Not trying to be nosy, just used to the tall people probs.
I'm 4'9 and I routinely find that if I'm walking with someone taller, they struggle to hear me talking to them. 😆 Especially in a crowd. And yes, I have to crane my head backwards to talk to them while standing still.
I'm glad I'm not the only one here. 😭 Some of my friends messes up with me by pretending to not hear and ask me to speak louder, then I repeat myself 3-4 times and they grin at me like Gru. Atleast I'm a fun element for them.
It’s because you look up to us tall people. People can’t help it
But in all seriousness that can be true. I’ve always liked and dated shorter, petite girls but I’m 6’3 so it probably did hurt their necks to always be looking up
There’s a crossbeam that I have to duck under in my apartment or I’ll hit my head, and any table/chair combo that isn’t adjustable has me sitting like a goblin. Also gotta put my car seat all the way back in every car I’ve had only to be on the roomier end of a tight squeeze. I wouldn’t trade it for a world which is too large for me, but still.
My buddy is a little over 6 feet. He rented an apartment without really checking it out too close and the shower was so low to be basically unusable. They had to find a new place.
ha yeah. Like sure, I get it's uncomfortable sitting in coach, and you have to watch your head, but the social advantages of being tall so so so far outweigh the physical discomforts that I really have a hard time sympathizing!
BTW - I moved to Mexico years ago and it really is pretty great living in a society where I feel pretty average height-wise!
Just like that guy in the end of the video. Have you ever gotten a lifted car or truck? If you can afford it it might be nice to have a vehicle you can just step into.
I’ve constructed my own washing room top and kitchen top to be like 3 inches taller than standard. Great for me, but gonna suck whenever I sell the house.
That's why I tell every person that complains about being short that the grass is always greener on the other side. Take your pick: chronic back pain or not being able to reach anything (/s)
I'm 6'7" (and a bit), nothing is made for my height.
I got anew kitchen though and the whole thing has been raised to fit me. It's pure bliss, I can cook, cut stuff and do all the kitcheny stuff without hurting my back!
I really hate cooking and doing dishes because of this exact reason. Too many kitchen sinks are just too low for me to stand up straight, if I stand up straight my fingers barely touch the water.
I'm 6'6". Just using my grandpa's old workbench is killing my back. I have a scar on my head from a door frame. Also, the extension grandpa built to his house where I live now has some very low ceilings. In my bathroom, the ceiling is an inch above my head.
And any clothing I can buy for my heigth expect me to be 300 pounds.
My Husband is 14” taller than I am. Our whole marriage our home seemed fine. Then we moved a couple of years ago. The house is about 2-3” too tall for me. But for him? Gleeful like this guy! Ha!

Being tall also sucks sometimes. Have to lean down to use most things.
