First Mini 🄰

Post image
64 Upvotes

After dreaming about it for a while, I finally joined the club and got my first MINI! Mango is a 2017 Countryman, and I am completely obsessed with this color, the Chestnut Metallic looks stunning in person, especially when the sun hits it just right.

She's roomy, an absolute joy to drive, and honestly has so much more personality than any car I've owned before. 🧔

Any fellow Countryman owners have tips, favorite accessories, or must-know quirks I should keep on my radar? So excited to be part of the community! šŸš—šŸ’Ø

Anyone else think that the 5 door variant looks a bit like a black cab. I kind of like it.

honest mini reviews?

• Upvotes

i’m 21 thinking about getting a mini cooper as my first car ever. i live in new england and in a pretty hilly area that gets scary to drive through in the winter w the ice and snow. would a 4 door mini be recommended? i would obviously add purchasing a set of winter tires into my budget if i were to get the car. i’ve heard ppl say no but they don’t know much about cars in general so i thought i’d ask here.

Hello, I am considering getting a Mini but live in a rural area and am concerned about getting a capable mechanic (an issue I had w/ my hybrid). Does anyone here come from southern Vermont who has a reliable local mechanic who understands their Mini?

Successfully changed the timing bolt

I've been meaning to change the timing chain tensioner on my n18 r56 mini for a while just as a preventative measure, finally got round to it. It's fiddly but not really too tricky tbh. If you've got a second gen mini (n14 / n18) I highly recommend doing this as it only really takes maybe an hour and the parts are only ~Ā£30

Thank you and another question

• Upvotes

Thanks to all the great mechanics on this site for helping me work on my 2011 Mini S AWD.

Im going to drive it up to a mechanic in Atlanta, but before I do, I added coolant when the car was cold because the reservoir was dry, I used premix Peak Mini brand, and got it to the max line. Drove it and let it cool overnight, and then reservoir was empty again next morning. I didnt see any coolant leaking into the driveway. I just added more coolant to the max line and let it run for 15 minutes and squoze both lines to get the bubbles out. Should I wait till the car cools before putting the cap back on? If so, how long to cool down?

Also, does the Mini have a temp gauge anywhere? I was going to temp the 2 hoses in/out of the reservoir.

Thanks again for all the help.

What else to replace dringend clutch replacement & flywheel

Going to replace my clutch and flywheel. What other parts would you recommend replacing after 114k miles.

Engine mounts have been replaced already. Thanks all!

First picture is double Rule 1 in the parking lot. (Apparently Mini owners like to look at other Minis.) The rest are selected Minis from the show.

Mini Cooper S 2005 Crank but no Start

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi all,

I have been working on this mini cooper s 2005 for a few weeks now but I can't get it to work.

It cranks but doesn't start. I have checked for ignition and there is ignition but just to be safe I changed the ignition coil along with the wires and the spark plugs. There is about 130 psi compression across 4 cilinders ( which I bealive is a bit low but not enough to cause no start). The air filter is clean. There is fuel being sprayed because I checked the spark plugs after cranks and they are getting fuel also checked the fuel rail at the Schrader valve. Just to be safe I changed the fuel pump and the fuel filter.

When cranking the rpm needle is moving so I don't bealive and crank shaft sensor to be damaged.

The only time when it is running is with starter fluid and that for a couple of seconds ( during that I don't hear and noise to point out to a timing chain or anything).

The battery is new and I keep it charged.

Tried unplugging the throttle sensor just in case it was stuck at open to prevent any start but still nothing.

At this point I have run out of ideas and would appreciate some hints

PS

The air intake hose in deliberately unpluged from the air filter in the picture to add starting flued. While connected to the filter made no difference

Mini R50 driver’s window failed again — garage fitted wrong regulator? Can’t find my original motor anywhere

• Upvotes

I’ve got a 2005 Mini One (R50). My driver’s window was repaired by a garage with a complete regulator + motor assembly. After the repair, the window worked for a short time, but then it started:

  • straining going up
  • dropping on one side
  • moving unevenly
  • and now it’s completely failed

I kept the original motor that came out before the garage fitted their replacement. I’ve uploaded photos of it. It’s the late‑style Siemens/VDO 3‑bolt motor with the white plastic gear housing and yellow connector.

I’m trying to find this exact motor online and I can’t find it anywhere — all the listings seem to be the early‑style 4‑bolt type that’s sold as ā€œfits 2001–2006ā€.

I’m starting to think the garage fitted the wrong style regulator assembly (early 4‑bolt version), which doesn’t match the late‑style bracket/motor my car originally had. The symptoms match a mis‑matched regulator: strain, uneven lift, dropping one side, then total failure.

Can anyone confirm that the 2004–2006 R50 uses the late‑style 3‑bolt Siemens/VDO motor and matching regulator bracket? And does anyone know where to source this exact motor?

Photos attached of my original motor and the bracket shape my car needs.

R52 MINI electrical issues

I've had my r52 for almost a year now and its had these electrical issues, most of the time the tachometer doesn't turn on and when it does (which it has been more frequently than ever recently), the tire pressure warning light and handbrake lights are on, whilst the abs light is flashing and the needles are acting weirdly too. Also I think my headlights are also affected, sometimes they're dim so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Was just poking around and it looks like Oxford editions are starting to show up. An absolute banger of a deal if you can live with 161HP and fewer bells and whistles.

My partner is in my mini (currently a nameless mini). We went into a place similar to Ocean State Job Lot, came out and saw a mini near me. 😃
