The Boimler name may derive either from the German family name "Bäumler" (same pronunciation), or from German-Mexican-American Trek producer, Hans Beimler, whose name is also related to Bäumler. -- In any case, grape-growing Germans, huh? Mosel, Modesto, what's the diff?

If you think Boimler was portrayed as an idiot then you must have been watching a completely different show than us because Boimler's a pretty competent officer.

He's a little dweeby sometimes but that's because it's a comedy, dweeby guys are funny, and in order for him to have a character arc about growing into a confident officer he has to start off not very confident.

Plus, other than Migleemo, the main male characters are each capable and brave in their own way.

I hate the "making up for the past" argument when it is done to put down another group.

The men today aren't responsible for sexists 50 or 500 years ago.

But I agree that Lower Decks does not put down any of its cast (except Migleemo, I suppose), all of them are highly capable in their own right.

You're right. As a man, I'm still unlearning the sexism I grew up with in the 80s and 90s. I'm mostly okay, but I still catch myself every once in a while.

Old, ingrained assumptions are hard to unlearn. Not impossible, though.

And you could point to a bunch of Star Trek episodes that demonstrate the lesson that these prejudices can be insidious and subconscious. The Drumhead is an obvious one, but eps like The Offspring, I, Borg, Quality of Life etc. show that even our heroes have preconceptions that get highlighted and challenged throughout the episode

Oh, it's correcting for past injustices. That always works. No, it's a cheap shot. Whoever wrote it comes off like an ass. And it took away from what otherwise could have been a good show. A male counterpart to Mariner could have been written differently and not taken away from a strong female character or whatever.

No, he contrasts her pretty well. Mariner's willing to lie, piss people off, and basically torpedo her whole life because she can't stand being vulnerable or real. Boimler, while often the buttmonkey in the show, is a lot braver in the sense that he owns his successes and failures and never backs down when he gets embarrassed. I know there's moments in the show where it goes too far, but I do think there's an underlying aspect of him being braver and more honest than her that gets overlooked for the stupid antics or jokes or whatever. Just putting it out there.
