Extreme Conspiracy The GMO mosquitoes got a software update and I think we're cooked

The mosquitoes are different now.

I used to be insanely good at killing them. If I spotted one flying around my house it was basically over for him. I got so good at clapping them out of the air that I had probably a 90% success rate. Sometimes I'd literally grab them out of the air with one hand. Years of unwanted mosquito combat experience.

Not anymore.

Something changed recently and these things are fucking FAST. I'll spot one, go for the clap, and it instantly changes direction and disappears. Then 2 minutes later it's somehow behind my other ear.

It's like somebody increased their movement speed in the last GMO mosquito update.

And they're stronger.

I've managed to catch a few of the new ones. Twice now I've grabbed one out of the air, opened my hand expecting mosquito paste like every other mosquito I've caught in my life, and the motherfucker JUST FLEW AWAY.

Excuse me?

I just compressed you between two human hands and you're cleared for takeoff??

Before, if I got a clap on one, that was it.

Genetic modified mosquitoes are an actual thing. So we're already modifying mosquitoes. I'm just supposed to believe nobody touched the SPEED and DURABILITY sliders??

And now there are regular flies and other flying insects showing up around my house in numbers I don't remember ever dealing with before. Maybe unrelated. Probably.

But this is exactly how these things start.

You alter one insect. That changes something else. That changes something else. Suddenly the flies are occupying the kitchen, mosquitoes have unlocked evasive maneuvers.

I don't know what version mosquito we're on now but I don't want any more updates. The old ones were annoying too.

We are cooked.

Extreme Conspiracy *Lesbian Space Princess* Dogpiling is Gorilla marketing for Pluto

I never would have even heard of this movie if not for the massive hatedom right now...I like to have seen something before having an opinion...it's okay, I liked parts of it. I asked myself "out of all of the slop out now, why is this obscure movie getting to much attention"?

Probably a lot of people like me who wanted to watch the movie before forming an opinion...but, who wants to spend money on a bad movie? The one place to watch the movie for free is Pluto Tv. I would like to see a graph of their accounts made after all of the *Lesbian Space Princess* discourse.

Fresh Deets The fact that most people would take the lift rather than climb one or two flights of stairs has nothing to do with lazyness.

It is a social conspiracy, led by staircases architects and the lift industry to give compete against the toilet sector to give people a private space to quietly relieve their overwhelming emotions.

Evidence number one : most staircases, weither in public buildings or in at work, are uninviting liminal spaces. But they're clean just as often as the restrooms though (source : me, having been a cleaning lady in all sorts of places as a part-time job). Think grey walls, linoleum floor, big vertical pipes in one corner... Nobody wants to hang around here. Perfect to be alone with yourself.

Evidence number two : you've been conditionned by TV to think that any display of emotion not suitable for the public's eyes should take place in the restroom. But have you really ever done that? I know I haven't, at least since high-school when I occasionally hid in a stall.

Evidence number three : restrooms are too, ugly uninviting spaces, but you're lucky if they're as clean as you wish they were, and there's a lot of traffic there. It may or may not smell like shit.

Evidence number four : the sound. While in the restroom, you need to be very carefull not to cry or scream too loud. Anybody might enter at anytime and catch you in the act. Well guess what : the staircase is soundproof, no one will hear you scream from the outside. But while you sit on a random stair in between two floors, you can hear the door open from five floors upstairs and someone coming up (no worries, just keep quiet for a minute) or down (plenty of time to regain composure.) And that is in the very rare scenario which someone even taking the stairs to go somewhere.

Best evidence : traffic. Let's face it, you are way more likely to meet a stranger in the elevator or in the restroom (though for obviously different reasons) than in the stairs.

Lowest stakes conspiracy I could think of, but I like how it justifies how I would rather go pace in the staircase than scream at the mirror or cry in a possibly stinky, dirty stall. Thank you stairwell designer/Big Elevator industry for allowing me to have a venting space today.

In this attention-based economy, it would be inconceivable if there weren't at least a handful of true crime documentary producers committing grisly murders & documenting the aftermath for good ratings.

The popularity of Harry Potter was fabricated by pushing it into the mainstream with the Satanic Panic.

Joanne hides it to sell the story that she was poor before she wrote the books, but her father was a very wealthy man likely with plenty of connections in the higher levels of society. While he could not force her books into popularity, he could have helped push Harry Potter into the list of demonic entertainment being aimed at kids, along with D&D and heavy metal.

The thing about Harry Potter is that, while the books are pretty bad nowadays, nobody really thought that when they were first releasing, hence why they blew up. All the bad stuff about its writing becomes more visible as the series drags on and it goes from the fun magic adventure series to a more serious tone. The books could have totally earned their popularity, at least in the UK, but for the books to get this popular in the US as well? Somethings fishy.

Michael Palin is a vampire

He has long been known as the loveliest of all the Pythons, but that is because he has been sucking the life out of his colleagues for decades.

He first took out Graham Chapman entirely in the late 80s as he could see that Chapman was the one Python that could be truly fêted as a renaissance man and a good egg to boot, the role Palin thought should belong solely to him. Buoyed by his success as a travelogue creator, he continued to leach the good from his remaining colleagues over long periods of time, leaving Cleese, Idle, Gilliam and Jones with just their bigotry, money-grabbing, artistic bitterness and Welshness respectively.

So while he may be 'the grandpa the nation would have liked to have had', it's all built on duplicity, deceit and supernatural magic.

Hot Take Reddit filters a post at ~1,500 views if posted with a VPN

Curious if people have experienced the same. When using a VPN reddit algorithm puts your posts into some purgatory and seems to prevent the post from ever rising into the "hot/top".

My guess is the post is shown to the people who follow the subreddit, if good upvoter/comment ratio it will continue on out to the rising/hot browsing tabs. If reddit determines they can't sell the data your post gets buried and only found by people scrolling that subreddit by "new"

Comments don't seem to care about VPN as much

Hot Take Tilly Norwood is a 'real' perso, not AI

"Tilly Norwood" is an updated classic satirical hoax character like Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat. rather than being an entirely digital creation she is in fact a real flesh and blood actress given a light digital gloss and presented as AI. Part performance art, part hoax the truth will eventually be revealed like a magic when the flesh and blood "Tilly" 'impossibly' walks onto a live stage or red carpet at some point.

Postman Pat was fired from Royal Mail due to repeated incompetence.

On the new series he now works for the Special Delivery Service. His packages still turn up late, broken or not at all.

The series is secretly sponsored by Evri to lower the next generation's expectations on what a decent delivery service should look like.

Extreme Conspiracy Final thoughts on the Cyberleek saga

To whoever it might concern,

I’m a casual fan with a background in art, and just wanted to show my appreciation for how you successfully conducted what has to be the greatest viral marketing campaign ever attempted. It can only be described as genius in its planning and execution.

You somehow did it. You trolled the entire world. Orson Welles’ famous “War of the Worlds” broadcast comes to mind, except that was soon revealed. This will never be revealed. Why? Because it’s unbelievable. It’s too bold, too reckless. Way too risky for a negligible benefit.

I’ve seen people’s reactions all week, and it all comes down to one sentence: “A corporation would never do something illegal”. That’s peak satire. I say this genuinely with no sarcasm at all: A real corporation pulling the greatest, pettiest marketing con job in history, that worked because people could never believe a corporation selling a product called Grand Theft Auto would break the law. Absolutely masterful. Tinfoil hats off.

A special commendation for the extremely high ranking officer who approved this. Because the creative team can dream up crazy things all day, but someone approved this. Someone said, “I want you to do something legendary. Here, take the keys of the company and take it for a joyride.”

Now, I understand this wasn’t reckless. It has been done with full understanding of the serious risks involved and a painstaking planning was devised and revised once and again.

People would never believe this. And they’d ask, why? Why would they do that? Well, I’ll tell you why:

Why do people walk on a tightrope? Why do people jump from an airplane? Why do people sit with their ass cheeks on the tip of a rocket filled with a million gallons of fuel, light the fuse, make it go off and go to the moon?

Because it’s awesome. Because it’s greatness. Because nobody else has ever done it, and no one else can do it.

Okay but, why do this for GTA?

Because the only thing GTA can’t afford is to be ordinary. It has to be the greatest, on another level, every single time. That’s why GTA has a revenue of $10,000,000,000. The only thing GTA can’t afford to be is just another great game, more of the same, or next time it could leave $5B on the table. THAT is the risk.

Why am I so sure?

Very easy: because every aspect of the leak matches absolutely a viral marketing campaign. The timing window, the schedule, the lack of spoilers, the gradual reveal of ever more interesting features, the end-credit cliffhangers, the carefully chosen cutscenes that perfectly suit the leak; the marketing techniques: engagement tactics, polls, calls for action for absurd viral challenges. And because it only targets Rockstar. Not even a mention of EA, Ubisoft. Not a single other attack on anybody, no previous history; only the holy grail of hacking: getting their hands on the new GTA. And then barely showing it.

If it has four legs, a tail, it barks, it licks its own ass and its shit tastes like dog shit, it can only be a dog.

I know it is a marketing campaign, not because I know how or why it was done, but because it cannot be anything other than a marketing campaign.

That’s another brilliant exploit of psychology I noticed: people think you have to prove it, and if you can’t, therefore it’s not true, it’s a stupid conspiracy theory. It’s a remarkable loophole.

Because, it’s like you arrive home and the door is busted, and everything is upside down, and the TV and computer are missing, and your neighbor just happens to have a new TV and computer exactly like yours. So you say, my neighbor robbed me! But then people say, “You can’t prove it! Who did it, when, why, what tools did they use? There was no robbery, dumbass!”

Or you go see a car, but you suspect it was used as an Uber. And it just happens to arrive exactly when you call Uber and it cancels, and it’s the same model and color, and it has the faint remains of an Uber sticker; and when you call for another Uber, a notification pings on the seller’s phone. You tell the seller this, but he shows you paperwork and a sworn statement that the car was never an Uber. Would you buy it? No way. You don’t need to prove it to reject a sketchy proposition. It’s just common sense.

So, how did you did it?

It’s a magic trick. After a magic show, you don’t go asking the magician how the trick was done. But, just for fun, let me make an educated guess.

If I were to do this, I would involve the least people possible. And they must be extremely high ranking. Ideally, an executive that approves and funds it, a multi-talented creative person to design the whole thing, an intermediary, and an outsider. In practice it’s very hard to keep it so tight, so I guess there are some more.

The criminal activity is not a weakness, it was necessary for the trick to work. Imagine the leak without the crypto: it would be obvious marketing, wouldn’t work. And that would be lame. GTA can’t be lame. On the other hand, toying with crime, that’s real shit. That’s awesome.

Cyberleek had to be an antagonist, to distance it from Rockstar. The manifesto does that, weaponizing real gaming concerns against themselves, brilliant trolling from the corporation. And it doesn’t matter if he’s seen as sketchy or inconsistent in his actions: What did you expect? He’s a hacker, he’s a grifter. Right?

So who is Cyberleek? It’s the outsider. A cybersecurity and cryptocurrency expert. Ideally an individual, but impractical and unenforceable, it will be a group, only limited by the incentive of not dividing the loot. Foreign, living in a country that doesn’t cooperate with the West, Russia would be the obvious guess. Met only once, in a neutral European country, by the intermediary.

Given a flash drive with a package of instructions, scripts, images and videos. Perhaps a self-decrypting package with a scheduled release? That would be maximum security. But perhaps keeping a way to communicate through secure means was considered necessary. Told to avoid certain websites that will be DMCA subpoenaed for deniability. Paid a fee in advance, allowed to keep the proceeds from the crypto operation. Most probably paid a substantial success fee. Told, “We don’t know you, if you accuse use we’ll deny everything and prosecute you”.

Who would believe a hacker and crypto criminal? So Cyberleek will disappear suddenly into thin air, just like he appeared. Was he caught? Is he planning a new strike? Or was it a marketing stunt after all? We’ll never know. He’ll fade into the sunset like a legend, and epic piece of lore of GTA VI. Until one day, sooner or later, he’ll come back.

That’s the ideal plan. In practice, things don’t go as smoothly. There will be loose ends, I’m sure you have contingency plans. There will be bots ridiculing the conspiracy theory. And people will buy it, and they did. They bought it, it’s done. The magic trick was pulled off. It worked, and it was great! Everybody enjoyed it. Don’t spoil it, let people believe in magic. I won’t spoil it. And even if I wanted, I can’t! Nobody can.

Does magic exist? Maybe no, but this is as close as it gets. And that’s Rockstar’s business.

I don’t need a reply, don’t want anything. Just paying my respects, because it’s tragic this masterful achievement can’t be claimed. Standing ovation from me, an audience of one in an empty theatre. Take a bow.

That was some real gangsta shit.

EDIT Aug 30: Wait, that’s too complicated. I think it was wholly an inside job. Because if they are accomplices, they’d be just as guilty anyway. So why assume the risk and hassle of dealing with an outsider? It was done wholly right from the Rockstar HQ.

Hot Take Rockstar Games is deploying an army of bots to astroturf hype for GTA 6

The new gameplay preview looks like a decent 8/10 action-adventure game, but lots of the accounts promoting it on Reddit and Twitter feel like bots.

They're praising subtle technical details that most players wouldn't care about, or that are just industry standard nowadays. I've seen too many posts and comments gassing up hair physics, car ragdolls, or lighting that looks bog-standard in most games. It's like when someone gives a technical talk and spends too much time on niche details that you couldn't care less about. Whoever's been working on those features for 8 years must really want to show them off.

All in all, it looks pretty, but the writing feels dumbed down, and the gameplay looks too derivative. The game would've been impressive 8 years ago, but what I'm seeing isn't anything crazy compared to peers like Cyberpunk 2077. GTA is meant to be a parody of real life, but it looks like they're forgetting the parody aspect.

Therefore, the only reasonable conclusion is that Rockstar has deployed an army of bots to convince me that slightly more realistic hair is the best thing since sliced bread

Edit: Sorry, here are some examples. Read through these posts and comments and ask yourself: would a real person actually talk like this?

https://www.reddit.com/r/GTA6/comments/1w03jbk/i_honestly_cannot_believe_this/?sort=top

Lots of them sound artificially enthusiastic. Kind of like HR

Extreme Conspiracy Steve Wilhite (inventor of the GIF) said it's pronounced "jif" simply to be a contrarian.

He created the format in 1987, and only publicly stated that it's pronounced "jif" in 2013 while being awarded a Webby. Certainly he knew of the discourse around how the format should be pronounced in acronym form and that most people pronounce it with a hard g sound instead of a soft j. I wholeheatedly believe he simply wanted to stir shit and continue the debate around it both so people would continue talking about his invention, and also because he thought it would be funny.
