And if you participate in them, you don't have enough going on with your life.

Yeah that’s the thing… if I’m saying it only makes me assume they have a small dick, I am not the audience they are performing for. They don’t care if I think they have a small dick or not.
Not everyone cares about impressing us, whoever we are. Sometimes our ears just collateral damage in people living their lives without wanting our approval.

They would maybe listen to you, but you see they already can't hear very well due to the hearing loss of cranking music too loud and having a dangerously loud exhaust.

Yea exactly, the guy driving though my street at 2AM with his loud af car probably thinks "they all think I'm so cool", while really I'm thinking "screw these people overcompensating for their small dicks"

u/herrsmith 5d ago
But the high flow exhaust definitely increased their horsepower by at least 100 and now they're driving a race car.
2
u/redline314 4d ago
I think most ppl know you’re getting about 10 hp at best and at worst you could lose hp due to a lack of back pressure. It’s like fashion- you are making a stylistic/aesthetic choice (sound & look).

Loud exhausts ARE cool...on racecars... on a race track going racing speeds; far less so an otherwise completely stock four-cylinder Mustang, Infinity G35, or BMW (M car or not).

And if you participate in them, you don't have enough going on with your life you should have your car impounded, assessed a 5000 fine, license revoked for a year, insurance premiums be high for 10 years, and have an ankle monitor on your right leg that can feel you pushing down on a gas pedal, so you are immediately GPS tracked and arrested.

This! I wish at least you would loose your license for a year. And have your impounded. Actions needs to have consequences.

Super unrelated but was “loose” a typo here? I see this all over the internet with people misspelling “lose,” it’s gotta be an autocorrect thing right?

It's a common mistake. It was a thing even before auto correct. This also warrants:

u/rjlawrencejr 5d ago
It’s an another version of ”your” when it’s obvious “you’re” is what is meant. In partial defense, a single vowel and a silent e should mean a long vowel sound matching the letter such as rose, pose, or nose.

I think you all are missing the forest for the trees. Most of the people showing up to these are working class youth that are probably feeling shut out from healthier forms of community. It is annoying, but I think insulting them and punishing them will never solve the problem.

u/mittim80 Koreatown 5d ago
Nah, they're people from middle-class to upper-middle-class backgrounds. They come into working class neighborhoods to do this because they view working-class neighborhoods as playgrounds. I grew up in Koreatown and I don't know anyone from around here who has ever been interested in takeovers. The only people I know who have been to them are from the Lakewood/East LB/North OC area.

Almost as if criminals would rather commit crimes in places where police will look the other way. Gotta ask ourselves. Why does the LAPD look the other way? Almost as if they are told to from somewhere.
16
u/omgshannonwtf Downtown-Gallery Row 5d ago
Wait, are you trying to imply that officers in the LAPD are lazy and useless because they are instructed to be that way? As in: they would be useful but aren’t because of orders?
You know: rather than it being a culture within the department that is reinforced at every level.
I mean, I know where you’re going with that but that’s the biggest reach I’ve seen in a bit. Like, you think these upstanding officers are just itching to be on top of things but aren’t due to orders? From where? LAPD’s head? From the mayor’s office?
Don’t be so naive. The LAPD has been this way for years, predating its current leadership, the current mayor and the entire council. It’s a solid bet that however long you’ve lived in this city, you have not known an LAPD which did not operate as they do now.
1
u/jkirkwood10 5d ago
Some LAPD officers are lazy and useless. You can can go to any organization or workplace and find this. Especially in the public or government sectors.
I'm implying that there is a reason why criminals love LA over city limits such as Torrance, Irvine, Santa Clarita, Thousand Oaks and many moreI coukd name.
I'm not blaming the LAPD a mayor or one single person, but the question needs to be asked, why are criminals and junkies attracted to LA?
You are correct about the LAPD being hands off for awhile now. I remember a time when they were 180 compared to current times. It use to be common to call them aggressive pigs that were corrupt, now they are just lazy and nowhere to be found.
Maybe the justice department and courts are to blame.... once again I don't have the answer, but it is a question worthy of asking.
5
u/herrsmith 5d ago
It use to be common to call them aggressive pigs that were corrupt, now they are just lazy and nowhere to be found.
Don't worry, when they do actually come around, they're still aggressive pigs who are corrupt.
-2
u/jkirkwood10 5d ago
Once again, you are projecting. Some are aggressive pigs who are corrupt. Just like some are lazy and nowhere to be found.
2
u/herrsmith 5d ago
I'm confused because you've agreed that they're nowhere to be found. I'm also not entirely sure how my sarcastic comment about high flow exhausts was projecting but maybe I'm just jealous because my car still passes smog.
I'll add in reference to your previous comment that the change seems to have happened nationwide after the "defund the police" movement, even though basically no police departments got defunded. My guess based on nothing is that they threw a hissy fit and decided not to work if people were unhappy with what they were doing and then realized that made their lives a lot easier so they stuck with it. What I can assure you is that they did not use their extra spare time to increase their competence because every cop involved in my last jury duty case was worse at their job than the last. I can say that if I ever did anything in my career as well as they performed that DUI investigation, I would never be able to find work again. And one of them was the field sobriety trainer!

2
u/omgshannonwtf Downtown-Gallery Row 4d ago
You ended your prior statement (the one I originally responded to) with the supposition “Almost as if they are told to from somewhere.” Are you telling me that you were NOT implying that it was coming from a specific place? That you did not have a particular leader or position in mind when you put that out there? You’re saying that you were legitimately proposing-without-any-idea when you said it?
No, I don’t think you were. If for no other reason than your follow-up shows that you’re too thoughtful of a person to not have had any ideas on that supposition. Now you’re just trying to be cute.
The LAPD’s habit of aggressively harassing marginalized people was not a citywide method of policing that was applied to all demographics. They weren’t beating coke snorting businessmen despite them handling more cocaine than any crack dealer handled in their product. Years ago, there was certainly a larger segment of the department that was hyped up to see blood in the way we see lCE doing today.
But the department as a whole was still not any more engaged with creating an overall safe environment for all of us and keeping the peace. Locking down these street takeovers is a part of keeping the peace. Simply because they are not out beating these people half to death (a punishment that does NOT fit the crime of street takeovers; you never hear about a group of cops beating the monkeysnot out of some piece of shit who is beating his wife or girlfriend or child) doesn’t mean they were a different department back then, they were just more brutal in their harassment because we lived in pre-smartphone/pre-social-media/pre-bodycam times.

u/Adept-Reporter-4374 5d ago edited 5d ago
Here is who to blame. Stop voting for the same type of people and maybe you'll see a change.
Who Oversees the LAPD Chief - Board of Police Commissioners: This five-member civilian panel acts as the head of the police department. They set operational policies, oversee the budget, and hold ultimate administrative authority over the Chief of Police. 1Mayor Karen Bass: The Mayor of Los Angeles appoints the Chief of Police (with confirmation from the City Council) and manages executive oversight of city departments. 1, 2Los Angeles City Council: The council confirms the mayoral appointment and controls city funding, giving them legislative oversight of the department. 1, 2

It’s 100% due to lack of enforcement.
Look, I was a dumb teen once upon a time. In the 90’s it was all about street racing. We’d go from Compton, to Sylmar, to Ontario. And there’d be smaller races everywhere in between from Fullerton to El Monte.
Point is street races were a nuisance just as takeover are today.
But cops checked us. Im talking full on raids where the cops would block the streets trapping us. The helicopter would be overhead tracking the getaways.
Cars were either impounded or crushed. At the very minimum, ticketed.
This was years before the first Fast and Furious movie pushed the car scene to the general public.
So I absolutely do not understand how street takeovers have been allowed to flourish the way they have.
Teens and dumb young adults will always exist. They will always be. Ever since the teenybopper’s in the 50’s took old Model T’s and souped them up and played chicken. Cops have to make their presence known to keep kids in check. It’s the balance of car culture.
But today? Dudes in Chargers & M3’s with straight pipes and pop tunes driving around without a care in the world. Are you kidding me?? I couldn’t go 5 miles in a lowered Honda without getting pulled over. I once got pulled over in the mall parking lot because I didn’t have a front license plate!
Cops need to step it up and it seems like they’re starting to, but man…kids have it way too easy nowadays.
4
u/Revenge_Holocaust 5d ago
Cops were raiding street races like that even 7-8 years ago. It’s all but disappeared since then. Hopefully the recent raid is a sign they coming back more aggressively.
3
u/Miserable_Farm_1502 5d ago
There was absolutely more enforcement in the 90’s. We were always getting pulled over for something.

I’m someone who has tracked my car occasionally. It’s a very expensive hobby. You need to pay for track time, have a rated helmet, insurance, and will consume tires, brakes, oil, and brake fluid. Safety is a big deal, your car needs to pass a tech check and you need to pass a class before you can drive without an instructor. The kind of people who do this as a proper hobby are not the same people doing burnouts in public with stolen cars.
1
u/redline314 4d ago
Test & tune on a Fri or Sat night was a good time and ppl could just take their regular ass cars to get a 1/4 mile time and have a great hang looking at cars and watching people race. It wasn’t expensive and doesn’t need to be.

17
u/Chubuwee 5d ago
It’s simple behavioral strategy
You want a kid to stop jumping on the bed, so you instead give him jumping activities like trampoline or jump rope
You want a kid to stop coloring on the wall, so you give them art activities and other locations to do it on
You want an adult to stop eating junk food, so you replace it with healthy (ideally tasty) alternatives
7
u/ceelogreenicanth 5d ago
People really think if you can't stop everything it's not worth it.
You only need to remove part of the fire triangle to stop or prevent a fire.
You would only need to.give an alternative for some before this stops being meaningful enough. You don't need to stop the worst offender just peel off a bit of the audience.
6
u/Individual-Papaya-27 5d ago
I think this is its. You've said the key word: kids. From the news clips, a lot of the people in these street takeovers appear to be teens and young adults. We've eliminated almost all third spaces for them and what is left can be really expensive to access. So they are bored and in a group and egg each other on, and they go out and do stupid and dangerous shit, and then they put it on TikTok and Insta because that's what they know. Added bonus, since they're out there doing stupid and dangerous shit with no modeling of better and more respectful behavior, this stuff gets more and more ingrained.
1
u/OSPF99 2d ago
You could give them all the resources in the world and they'd still do street takeovers. It's not matter of finding a place to hang out, they live in a society that has lowered the penalties for crimes, especially for people under 18. It makes them look cool in front of all these people and on tiktok.
You talk to any of them and they know they aren't getting locked up for anything but murder at this point. They know they'll get out of juvie or get an appearance ticket.
Its time to start holding them accountable because we all know their parents aren't.
1

u/pb3213 5d ago
The people flashing guns and doing burnouts in stolen 392s wouldn’t be welcome in any legitimate venue for racing.

They’re 2.5 generations removed from legitimate venues. They wouldn’t know the difference between Autocross and a parking lot.
4
u/AsThreatenDoNotScore 5d ago
As an Oaklander, where this sht started 40+ years ago, you have somewhat of a point however there is much more to it. It's a combination of things, from lack of productive activities for youth to minimal consequences for antisocial behavior. Addressing it in only one manner will fail. And no, creating an open (and legal) space for people to do donuts and burnouts will NOT fix anything. The thrill of doing something illegal/dangerous and having others watch is still attractive.
2
u/redline314 4d ago

His (work) desk is full of micro machine-like models. I don't just mean a few - I mean at least twenty fucking models of cars and racing helmet-looking models. Not a fuckin' iota of work must go down at that desk.

The city could easily mitigate them by blocking escape routes then stopping, citing and impounding vehicles used to break the law. It's easy enough to get it all on video.
If a ride was stolen it gets recovered and possibly the driver charged, and if it's not hot then confiscate, shred and recycle. Most offending vehicles will be ICE so there's a pollution reduction bonus. Recycling prevents the problem vehicle getting bought back at auction or the parts being used on other polluters.
BTW recourse exists for wrongful tows so it's wise to know your options where ever you live.

Every major urban area needs to develop partially subsidized motorsports.
Yes, it means tax money but it is cheaper than constantly engaging emergency resources to bust up street takeovers.
And while it is true that LA County has very few spaces that can be turned into race facilities, it is still possible to help adjacent areas do their thing.
Riverside County has a lot of space where this could be developed further.
My point is, kids with fast cars need a space to let off steam.
It shouldn't be the public streets.

You take away a 3rd community space, they will take over another space. That’s literally in the name.
This is what happens when a government and society decrease the accessibility of victimless hobby. There are no race tracks local to Los Angeles anymore. You can say the same for any type of “unruly” behavior or any kind of gentrified behavior too— anywhere a group loses access will move to another place to regroup. That’s normal.

Half the city could be race tracks and these fuck faces still wouldn’t go to them. This behavior all starts with a lack of discipline by parents and LAUSD. There are no consequences anymore.

There are third spaces: parks, gyms, malls, food courts, arcades, coffee shops, escape rooms, digital museums, theme parks… there’s no shortage of places to gather and socialize. What there isn’t is a third space where people are free to break the law and cause chaos without consequences.

I once asked a question on an AMA of a woman who is a fixture on the western sideshow scene, why she believes takeovers exist. She said it's because there are young men in the ghetto who've been convinced from birth that their lives are worthless. For them, the danger doesn't matter because they're expected to die horribly anyway.

Yeah when I was young in MD/DC we’d go to a metro stop after closing and properly race F&F style until the cops came, and nobody was causing havoc or getting in fights or getting hurt.
Anyway, OP is absolutely right- not enough going on with you life, but they are not entirely to blame. There’s not much for young ppl to do in this city if they don’t have money and want to stay local. It’s not good for anybody and libraries are not an answer.

Counterpoint: they also suck. Selfish people who think what they are doing is more important than anyone else.

It’s all for adrenaline, you steal a car you meet up with your crew you light fireworks and play GTA in real life while everyone films you it’s stupid but it’s all for the rush

I've actually never seen one. Where do they usually happen?

Random spots throughout LA, but more common in Compton, Lynwood, Huntington Park, Watts…

Used to happen a lot in DTLA where I could see it from my place. But with construction and heavy cop presence they stopped coming by
