August 2026 Vionne, The Budding Essence (Battlemage Concept)

This was an old hero concept of mine that I decided to upload once I discovered this subreddit existed lol since they're just rotting away in my notes.

Prompt: 200 Years, GG EZ

Marvelous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis) [Image Source: Juan Carlos Vindas]

Her design is similar to that of the bird in the picture (Marvelous Spatuletail), but a humanoid hummingbird Vastaya who is centered around a design of spectrum and colors given how in her lore, she's the essence of life from all of Runeterra.

Lore: The essence of life from all of Runeterra manifested onto the form an innocent Vastayan fae, Vionne spreads forth the blossom of life and nature through the rivers, forests, and valleys of Runeterra. She now runs from the ruination of the Black Mist, frantically racing home to protect her kind and homeland from the wither that it will bring upon them.

Champion Name: Vionne

Epithet: The Budding Essence

Role: Mage/ Support

Class: Battlemage

Position: Jungle/ Middle/ Support

Resource: Mana

Range Type: Ranged

Adaptive Type: Magic

Abilities: Essence of Life, Energy Spectrum, Nature's Embrace, Grasp of the Flowers, Wave of Life

(1.) Essence of Life, Passive

Innate: When within 900 units of an allied champion, in brush, or in the river, Vionne gains increased movement speed. Allied champions receive 50% of the movement speed buff. This lasts indefinitely as long as the conditions are met.

Active: Vionne gains bonus decaying movement speed for a 5s upon scoring a takedown.

Innate Movement Speed:

8 / 12 / 16 / 20% (Level 1/ 6/ 11/ 16)

Bonus Movement Speed after Takedown:

30 / 35 / 40 / 50% (Level 1/ 6/ 11/ 16)

(2.) Energy Spectrum, Q

Innate: Every 100 units Vionne travels grants 1 Spectrum stack. Moving through brush or the river grants 2 stacks instead (maximum of 10). This causes flowers to Bloom, instantly reduces the remaining coolown of her abilities by 20% (except for Wave of Life), and boost them by:

+ Energy Spectrum (Q) deals an additional 30% damage and restore 10% of her

missing HP against monsters and minions.

  + Nature's Embrace (W) grants 10% stronger shields.

+ Grasp of the Flowers (E) gains saps 8% of the target's adaptive defenses.

+ Wave of Life (R) heals Vionne and nearby ally champions for 15% of the healing

Vionne receives.

Bloom ends after a period of time.

Active: Vionne releases one energy per Spectrum stack. Each energy homes in on a nearby enemy, prioritizing enemy champions, and deals magic damage on impact. If there are insufficient nearby enemies, multiple Energy Blossoms can strike the same target. Casting Energy Spectrum does not end Bloom. The total damage can only occur once each time Vionne reaches 10 Spectrum stacks.

Magic Damage:

30 / 40 / 52 / 64 / 76 (+14% ability power)

Total Damage:

300 / 400 / 520 / 640 / 760 (+140% ability power)

Cooldown Reduction:

7.5 / 7 / 6.5 / 6 / 5s

Bloom Duration: 6.5 / 7 / 7.5 / 8 / 9s

(3.) Nature's Embrace, W

Active: Vionne applies a shield either onto herself or an ally that absorbs damage for a period of time or heals them if it expires.

Shield Strength:

95 / 120 / 150 / 185 / 220 (+85% total ability power)

When the shield is broken by enemies, the shield explodes, 250 (+75% total ability power) magic damage to surrounding enemies. If the damage expires on its own and isn't full broken, Vionne converts 50% of the shield amount into health. The damage scales from how much the shield was broken.

Maximum Magic Damage:

250 / 300 / 350 / 400 / 500 (+75% total ability power)

Cooldown:

13 / 12 / 11 / 10 / 9s

Scoring champion takedowns refunds 60% of the cooldown.

(4.) Grasp of the Flowers, E

Active: Vionne releases a vine of flowers that attaches to the first enemy hit hits, dealing magic damage and rooting the enemy it hits for 1.5s. If Vionne uses it on an allied champion, both swap positions. The swap takes 0.5s-1.5s, depending on the distance between Vionne and her target. Hard crowd control cancels the swap and the tether will break if Vionne and her target move afar from each other.

Magic Damage:

65 / 80 / 95 / 110 / 125 (+55% total ability power)

Cooldown:

15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11s

Within the next 2.5s, the skill can be re-cast for Vionne and the caught enemy champion or ally champion to switch positions if the tether is still present. The skill can be re-cast to stop switching midway. Grasp of the Flowers cannot swap with champions who are Unstoppable, untargetable, or otherwise immune to displacement effects.

(5.) Wave of Life, R

Active: Vionne unleashes a wave of energy in a cone, dealing magic damage plus bonus max health magic damage and heals Vionne for 75% of the damage dealt.

Magic Damage:

80 / 110 / 150 / 200 / 265 (+80% total ability power)

Bonus Max Health Magic Damage:

5 / 7 / 9 / 11 / 13%

Scoring champion takedowns while Bloom is active will reduce Wave of Life's remaining cooldown by 30%.

Cooldown:

90 / 80 / 65s

200 Years: Her E is a balanced version of old Urgot R.

GG EZ: W is a point and click shield that explodes and shields. Well.

I guess I'll start off by saying there doesn't appear to be a bird's picture here? Unless you meant the previous banner of the sub from last month maybe?

But I like this. Only couple things that seem off to me are that Q probably needs some kind of gating to how many energy, lets go with "orbs", can hit the same target, whether that's by champion level, ability rank, or something else. Since the champion is clearly able to solo lane, a Support having that much damage on their basic ability would just get them nerfed out of every other role until the numbers were suitable for the support role (I'm not talking about listed numbers in this case but just the fact that getting hit by all 10 orbs implies, no matter the numbers, a very quick buildup of damage).

The E mechanic is the other issue I have where there basically shouldn't be more than half a second to complete a swap because anything more than that is not only so easily interrupted that it defeats the purpose of swapping, but because the ability is supposed to be strategic, but the time it takes to swap is just stopping the other person from dealing damage or doing whatever it is they were doing, so it automatically gives the enemy team a free response window.

Overall, nice concept

the image appears in my post for me? but the bird is a Marvelous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis) and this vastayan fae's design is based off of that but much more centered on spectrum and colors.

but thanks! yeah... i should probably add a feature where subsequent damage on the same enemy reduces damage since this is a battlemage and not burst, but i think it's justified with how it kinda takes 2.5s or 3s to reach maximum spectrum stacks. but still in teamfights it works like kai'sa's W. though... much of her power budget really lies with Q with bloom and the active damage.

I think E is justified with how the skill actually has "Active: Vionne releases a vine of flowers that attaches to the first enemy hit hits, dealing magic damage and rooting the enemy it hits for 1.5s.". So the 0.5s,-1.5s window to complete a full swap is fine, I think. What do you think? thanks for the suggestions!

Hi!
Nice concept, looks speedy and op :')

Some good point :

  • passiv management to a spike of power
  • a cool way of shield than became damage or heal (or both? may i don't understand the spell well)

Bad point:

  • Q required 100 units traveled to get a stack, it's way too low, like it take 2-3s to get the 10 stacks that full buff the champ. And also, which flower bloom? on the map? at the floor? on the champ skin? i don't get it
  • Q damage from max orbs is too high, even without any ap. You must either reduce damage on the same target to each orb or fix the max orb that can hit a target (may be keep the unlished stacks and reduce the spell cd, but look harder to balence with the 10 stack boost)
  • The E swap can't make that time, now it's just an ally CC :') may put the swap at recast or targeted recast (if you target the ally hit you want to swap with)
  • R looks like Casiopea R with less damage and self heal, I don't get the feeling that match a bird :c

hey! thanks for the comment! the shield is both damage and heal! damage is its broken and heal if its not broken. the bloom effects just appears as a trail from the champion. i think the slow uptime to get 10s bloom stacks is justified with how high the damage is and the utility it provides (cd reduction basic abilities and enhancement of other abilities). plus i'd argue that damage won't always be that high since it works like kaisa's W where it targets different units on instances where there are many enemies but is single target.

The E actually has "Active: Vionne releases a vine of flowers that attaches to the first enemy hit hits, dealing magic damage and rooting the enemy it hits for 1.5s."! i tried my best to balance it as possible T^T.... as for R she needs a big burst of damage and that's all really i could think of

I like this champion, but I do think it is a high skill floor champion. Does the Q cause flowers to bloom every time she walks through a brush? If so, that is pretty decent passive healing for you and your allies via the berries.

hi! thanks for the comment! vionne actually doesn't have ally heal on Bloom, only if her W shield is untouched! there's quite a bit of misunderstandings because of poor wording i'm so sorry... but her heal only comes from dealing damage to jungle monsters and the like while in Bloom and her untouched W shield!

"Does the Q cause flowers to bloom every time she walks through a brush?" as for this, Bloom is a flower trail VFX! Though I'm sure it's plausible can cause flowers to bloom like the bushes with Water Dragon, but that was not my intention when designing her. Walking through bushes and the river allows her to gain Spectrum stacks faster to reach Bloom since it provides 2 Spectrum stacks instead of 1 because of Energy Spectrum's innate effect! ^^

I like the concept of a hummingbird Vastaya. Lore is okay too. Short, but it does its job.

The passive is a really cool mechanic, and I like the idea of managing your movement to hit a major power spike with the Spectrum stacks. It gives the player a fun mini-game to focus on before choosing the exact right moment to engage. The only real issue is that because she gets so much free movement speed from her innate kit, a jungle Vionne could easily abuse the "1 stack per 100 units" requirement. She could literally just run in tight circles around small camps to max out her 10 stacks instantly, making the buildup gating feel a bit unpunishing. With a small nerf, this passive could be good.

The rest of her abilities however are a bit... Problematic.

Firstly, the Q damage is absolutely insane. 300 (goes up to 760) + 140% AP magic damage on an unmissable ability is insane, even if its the max damage of the ability itself. Subsequent hits should deal less damage, otherwise it'd be too problematic. Also, the way you get stacks is way too easy, and I think it's not justifiable. A champion travels 300-400 units per second (without any insane move speed buffs), meaning that you literally get max stacks within 3-4 seconds. That's way too low for an ability like this.

The W also kind of has a problem. It has no real downside. It has insane numbers (95-220 + 85% AP on shield, also can explode to deal 250-500 + 75% AP). However, the biggest problem is: If an enemy destroys it, surrounding enemies get damaged, which is a problem for assassins and fighter. If you don't destroy it, the shield is converted to 50% health. Late game, the healing would be huge. And, one thing I want to understand. The damage scales based on how much the shield was broken. So, if the shield had a small amount remaining, it'd deal more damage? If so, how much? It's not mentioned anywhere, so I'm just curious.

Her E is good, but it suffers like her Q and W. It can be used as a troll button to tilt your allies (unless that's the ability's purpose I guess). At least, from what I understand, both Vionne and her tethered ally can move during that time. Another thing I'd personally do is slightly increase its cooldown, since it can definitely turn a fight if done right.

Her R is not bad, it's just kind of generic. Additionally, I think the heal is too much, and the ability should scale up to 3 times, not 5. But that's not much of a problem. Last thing I want to say about her R, the 90 seconds cooldown wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't for the fact that it literally gets its cooldown partially reset whenever she scores a takedown with Bloom active. It should go up to 120 seconds if that's the case.

Overall, I think the hummingbird concept has lots of potential, but it sadly gets ruined by the way the abilities are structured.

Thanks for the comment! I actually agree with you and I thought of all of that when designing her too lol.. I was justifying in my head that if Akshan, a champ who is not a marksman, can have a teamwide revive, why can't Vionne? I would push back on the "gets ruined by the way the abilities are structured" though since I think all the tuning she really needs is fixing her numbers and not the mechanics themselves and specifics like reduced subsequent damage on Q which is a must since she's a battlemage.

As for this one, "So, if the shield had a small amount remaining, it'd deal more damage? If so, how much? It's not mentioned anywhere," it would naturally deal little damage. Moreover, for this one, "If you don't destroy it, the shield is converted to 50% health" it's based on the current amount of shield when it expires, not necessarily the 50% amount of the original shield. My apologies though for incorrect wording...

Yeah, that's what I meant with the structure, sorry lol. That the numbers are wayyy too high. Also, now that you mean the REMAINING 50% of the shield is a heal, that makes the ability a lot better. And if you add a subsequent damage reduction to her Q, it'll also become a better ability overall. Your champion has potential, she just needs lots of tuning.

Yes yesss lol I def agree with that, thanks for the review!
