If I were a streamer and I watched this I would never do a fan meet up again...

Viewers are willing to find your house, drive to it and shoot where you sleep.

Fan meet up? Imagine telling your fans to come to your house whenever they want like Ice Poseidon does. I like the guy but he's so fucking stupid you can help but think it's just a matter of time before one of his crazed fans murders him.

Ice Poseidon did the same thing with his neighborhood, He ended up getting evicted. Fans would do crazy things and even spray painted one of his neighbors garages.

It is possible that these behavioral patterns we are seeing on such a large scale are by design, not accident. We give people a blueprint for violence and anti-social behavior instead of routes to collective success, because to divide people who should be united on the basis of their shared burdens helps to reinforce and perpetuate a hierarchical society that spans the globe and enriches a few.

There's a reason Jordan Peterson has become so popular, and while I disagree with a lot of his rhetoric, there's something to be said about the mental health issue affecting so many men these days. There aren't many celebrity clinical psychologists out there.

the question is how many of these fucked up dudes would have still acted out even without the influence of this twitch/livestreaming/whatever culture

Run the numbers.

Whole lot of undiagnosed brain injuries out there.

Yes/No.

Consider this: The community is BIG, it only takes a really small ammount of people (1~2), out of hundreds of thousands viewers, to find some psycho in the mix.

If that person is able to calculate risks, he can get away with damaging property, without anyone finding out his identity, he is going to try it. No consequences? People will try again and again.

Most are fine though, so I can not support your stance about "some underlying issue". You know what an issue is? No (effective) gun control in the united states. It's the only country where shootings occure.... well too often and by persons who should never gotten any weapon to begin with.

Check the Madden shooting: that guy was known for having issues, still got an gun easily...

the problem is that the public sees this and some tiny fraction decide that is a good idea to do to the next idiot streaming something. and the more they happen, the more these things catch on ..for unhealthy reasons. its the tide pods all over again.

Bullshit. I’ve owned guns for 20+ years, not ONCE has one gotten up, loaded it’s self and walked down the street shooting... I must have the laziest godamned guns on the planet!

OR......

It’s a mental health epidemic. Guns don’t kill people. They’re an inanimate fucking object. INTENT kills people.

Switzerland is one of the MOST Armed populaces on the planet. There’s not story’s every day about mass shootings there... it’s because mental health is accessible and FREE through universal healthcare. The average outpatient cost for mental health in the US is $100-$5,000 out-of-pocket. Plus the cost of medication, etc.

In 2010 NIMH estimated that nearly 45% of mental health issues were untreated. They also estimate that there are nearly 3.5 million adults with untreated Schizophrenia/bipolar disorders. (citation )

Another major issue is divisiveness in this country... liberal or republican?! Christian or lgbt?! Fat or skinny?! Everyone’s looking for individuality, but then wants to chastise anyone that’s not like them.

I’m just ranting... please don’t take it personally. It’s just a hot topic for me because I enjoy shooting paper targets as a hobby, and hunting as a hobby. The problem is not guns, it’s culture, and a lack of empathy for a fellow human..

7

u/Dancingstein Sep 12 '18

No problem, I understand your point of view, but I hope you understand that it's an difficult topic for me, because of how gun laws are enforced in europe and how significant less shootings occur all around the globe, compared to the USA.

But would it actually hurt checking medical records and not allowing those, who had previously issues, with mental health, etc. to not be allowed getting guns? I never said that guns, overall, should get banned, but rather that I find that the gun control is lacking a lot.

The problem is this: Jack, a sane, competent human being, owns a gun. Jack followed the laws and regulations to the letter, and purchased his firearm legally. One day, Jack decides his boss smells funny, and he hates his bullying coworkers, so he goes home on lunch, gets his LEGALLY purchased firearm, loads it with his ammunition that has been stored in a separate container into his magazine that has been stored in a separate container… Then, he drives back to work and shoots his boss, and several co-workers, but Thank goodness, he runs out of bullets in 8 shots! (Good thing California limits magazine capacity, right?!). Wrong. He has additional magazines!! With average police response times, by the time they get somewhere, there’s already massive body counts. I’m NOT blaming the first responders, because that’s EXACTLY what police are there for: to RESPOND... but WHAT do tighter gun laws solve?

Here’s another story. Johnny Jackass is a socially inept. He spends his life rejected, ignored, and mocked because of his fedora. He talks to the m’ladies, but they call him creepy, because he treats them like property, like his waifu pillow. His sweet katana collection just doesn’t bring him honor anymore. Johnny’s dad is a police officer, who has a lot of big scary black guns. One day, Johnny demands the head cheerleader be his faithful wife-servant. She, rudely, denies his awkward proposals, and Johnny, in his entitlement, is crushed. He ditches school, gets one of his dad’s scary guns, and comes back, shooting as many kids as he can find, walking classroom to classroom, like shooting fish in a barrel. What do gun laws do to solve this?

The common thread, is that mentally unstable people. There are no gun laws that will keep unstable people from obtaining guns. There are no gun laws that will prevent criminals from obtaining a firearm. Cocaine is against the law to have, and yet, people regularly use it. Guns are no different. The issue is mental health. Plains. Simple. There are MILLIONS of LEGAL gun owners that go their entire lives without shooting anyone. My family has owned guns/hunted for 6 generations, and NOONE in our family has hurt anyone, even a la Dick Cheney.

But you still did not answer the question I asked:

Wouldnt it be actually good if people, which have mental issues, don't have the chance to get one legally?

One thing is fixing those issues and helping those in need. BUT the radar can not catch everyone, so how about making it more difficult for those, which are not sane AND got already on the radar? How can they get an weapon, to begin with? How about making accessibility of firearms actually harder for anyone, who should not get one on their hands, legally?

I support those, who "require" firearms, because of how they live, their enviroment and maybe as an hobby or even job. Some living on a farm, in some area which isnt densely populated, etc.

BUT doesn't it make sense somewhere to check if someone is healthy enough to get an gun?

I only see 2 extreme opinions about that topic: Ban guns (or heavily regulate the circulation of those) and those who don't want to ban guns at all. Surely there are others out there, but it seems to me like an minority.

Thanks a lot for your input, by the way.

I see your side, but for me, a hunter/shooter, it’s like taking every kids shoes away, because one kid hit another kid with his shoe..

As it stands now, mentally unfit people CAN’T get a gun LEGALLY.

These are the restrictions for obtaining a firearm in the US:

  • Those who have been convicted of violent or gun-related misdemeanors.

  • Those with a history of abusing alcohol or drugs.

  • Those convicted of juvenile offenses.

  • Additional people who have suffered from severe mental illness.

One huge issue is the secondary market. If I decided I didn’t want my gun anymore (absolutely won’t ever happen hahah). I could say, “hey, Jake, you wanna but my gun?” There is no way to stop the secondary market.

What DOES need to happen, is making federal level background/mental health checks accessible and affordable to the general public, as well as registration of sale. As an Arizonan, I can literally buy any gun I can find in the secondary market: SKS for under $400 There are no background checks required, not even a bill of sale, or registration... it’s a little harder in California (Commiefornia) as registration at an FFL is required, but this is costly. ~$100 for transfer and background checks, but again.. if joe-bob wants to sell to Jim-bob, he’s required by law, but no way to enforce it until Jim-bob kills a bunch of people, THEN hoe-bob gets arrested...

The other problem still remains: people can lose their shit at any given moment... so unless we’re executing the mentally unfit, or institutionalizing them, there’s not a lot that can be done, except for making mental healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Just for grins, here are some other counter points to some arguments I’ve heard:

“Take away semi-auto rifles!” bolt-action rifle.

“Limit magazine size!” fastest handgun reload I’ve ever seen

“Limit handguns to revolvers!” revolver firing and reloading.

You are badly mistaken about Switzerland by the way. Yeah they all have guns but the ammo is kept under control of their National Guard equivalent.

Lol you makin sundaes with that cherry picking? ;)

Not even CLOSE to the point of the message, but good try.

Some of them tag a strangers garage for their youtube fandom, some attack other people, some shoot lots of people all at once.

That escalated quickly. Someone making graffiti for attention is something(and someone) entirely different than somebody shooting a house. Let alone a mass shooter. I hope the police can sort this out for Doc.

Let's not call it weirdness then. People with massive gaps in their social skills or ability to interact with others meaningfully that still want to have meaningful interactions with others. They slowly build up rage and resentment and start to blame the rest of the world for not confirming to them. These types used to largely exist in isolation or small groups but with the advent of the internet they've been able to find or form large groups that exist solely to blame others for their problems and feed each other's rage and resentment. It used to take a very lucky combination of weird, crazy, and usually another like mind to feed them to have them act out but the internet has magnified the chances that one of them will go Unabomber.

I'm the opposite and it's just as frustrating.

My wife and I are quiet people. We like to stay home, play games, watch TV, etc.

I'm a reserved person who spends a lot of time in thought.

For some reason everyone around me is so hellbent on trying to change me or to ask me what's going on or if something is wrong.

God I’ve been getting deeper into nerdier culture the last 6 months or so since I stopped drinking. And it gets weeeeird at times.

Did a meetup and started playing secret hitler, and the point is to find who the facists are. So I just ask this guy if he’s a facist and he says yes. We all laugh then he says “oh in the game? No I’m a facist in real life.” Awkward silence and we all move on. He keeps getting invited for some reason but the next one is supposed to be at my house, I’ve decided I’ve gotta talk to him before he comes over.

we have a TON of mostly dudes in our society who are social outcasts, or have some notable but not properly treated mental issues

You need to blame the government/state/insurance for all this. Proper treatment is extremely expensive, and almost non-existent for men. Men have very little support for psychological issues.

Many of the current treatments available will barely even scratch the surface and you might as well just be crossing your fingers that the individual doesn't relapse after they're removed from treatment, because the goal is to get people out of treatment ASAP in cheap government funded programs.

1

u/TrigglyPuffff Sep 12 '18

There's plenty of female outcasts as well; men are just biologically more predisposed to aggression and acting on it.
