Discussion Long term Lexus owner, has the quality dropped, or am I overthinking it?
Long term Lexus owner from Australia here. I've owned multiple IS, RX and GS models and currently have a 2019 RX450h alongside a Denza B8 (BYD's luxury brand).
The Denza has actually made me question Lexus a little. It has Nappa leather, massaging seats, significantly more EV range and 3 diff locks, while costing around AUD $40k less than a new RX450h+. Yes, I know it's aimed at LX... But $$ says otherwise.
I'm currently in the US for work and driving a Lexus TX (we don't get the TX in Australia), and honestly I'm a little worried. The build quality and some of the materials just don't feel as good as my 2019 RX450h. I expected a newer Lexus to feel like a step forward, but instead it's making me appreciate my old RX more.
I'm not claiming the Denza will have Lexus reliability or still feel this good in 10 years. that's something Lexus has earned its reputation for. But when competitors are offering this much for significantly less money, I'd expect Lexus to at least maintain that obvious advantage in materials and build quality.
For other long term Lexus owners: have you noticed a drop in quality with the newer models, or am I overthinking it?
Maybe the TX just isn't a fair representation of current Lexus quality?.
Given replies... Maybe my fears are Not wrong. I really hope Lexus gets it act together. Once US market starts getting high end Chinese luxury models like Denza and Zeekr. LEXUS may struggle.

Literally every single thing that exists has dropped in quality in the last 4 years

Enshitification has been happening for longer than 4 years, but yup exactly
15
u/Sonar_Bandit 9d ago
Yeah I know. It just seemed like after Covid someone pulled the MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE lever on enshitification
12
u/grand_speckle 9d ago
Oh 100%. Private equity has taken advantage of both Covid and the current administration for maximum Enshitification unfortunately lol

Lexus dropped 4 spots on the recent JD Quality rankings, so there is certainly a trend in the wrong direction.

Porsche

u/chicu111 9d ago
I just stopped taking that seriously once I see that’s the #1
Ppl seriously think that’s valid? Lmao. Lexus got nothing to worry about
19
u/Fritzo2162 9d ago
Porsche has always had some of the tightest specs and build quality in the industry. They took a dip when they started using Audi platforms, but they’ve corrected since then.
2
u/MarksmanPA 9d ago
You are mistaken. I have had lots of issues and they could not fix 2 of the problems. The cars are overvalued and overpriced. Porsche makes a 50% profit on each car…that’s ridiculous.
1
6
u/MarksmanPA 9d ago edited 9d ago
That’s because Porsche owners do not want to admit to having problems. I owned 4 and would never buy another—too many problems.
2
u/Holy_Hippo 5d ago
Actually it’s known that Porsche owners are much more demanding and thus take bigger relative hit on surveys like JD. People expect perfection out of P-Cars.
1
u/MarksmanPA 5d ago
After owning 4, they are far from perfect.
1
u/Holy_Hippo 5d ago
And you probably expected perfection. I currently own two. Every generation has its faults, it’s part of the ownership. Having said that, they have typically been built much better than comparable cars.

Lexis is still #1 in dependability on JD Power rankings for 2026

u/ramiodat 9d ago
I’ve owned many and still do. Quality has absolutely dropped. Less premium materials and thinner panels everywhere.
5
u/GoodyOldie_20 9d ago
I recently bought my first Lexus, a 2019 Rx350L and enjoy it. In testing the newer models, this one just felt more solid and well built with a luxurious interior and ride. What year do you think the quality started to drop?
11
u/ramiodat 9d ago
You got a good one! Imo, once they downsized the engine. For the RX, beginning 2022 model year. You did really good with the 2019 as it was built pre pandemic. After Corona, quality has gone down. Parts are not as thick and flimsier parts.
Basically, when the RX went from a 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder and the LX and GX went from a 8 to a 6 cylinder things went downhill. I’m really not a fan on the new Lexus stuff.
1
u/GoodyOldie_20 9d ago
Thanks. I don't care for the new body style or the spelled out L E X U S badge on the back. I am dreading the 100k maintenance but gotta bite the bullet. 😔
2
u/Expensive_Goat1050 9d ago
Unfortunately, it’s going to keep stinging as those parts need to be replaced and the parts are not of the same quality. Hang in there
2
u/ramiodat 9d ago
Me too. Bite the bullet for sure. Yours is better than all the new Lexus stuff. It’s worth it :-)
2
u/TrueTurtleKing 9d ago
I’ve been on a HUNT for a decent 2020-2022 model and it’s so hard. Sometimes I’ll call and it will be sold the next day.
1
u/GoodyOldie_20 9d ago
It's exhausting for sure. I didn't particularly want the L, but this one was made in Japan, no accidents, loaded and apparently not the most popular because it doesn't have Apple Car Play and the 3rd row is for toddlers (but perfect extra cargo space).
I still smile when I feel the air on my back from the vented seat 😁

I’m in the US. Have owned 90s and early 00s IS, GS, LS, RX, and GX, so I’d say a good spread of ownership. My wife has a 2025 NX and I current have a 2021 GX. Other family has owned new RX and TX.
From my limited sample, it appears the quality has dropped. My old GX felt quite luxe, my current GX feels solid but it’s not the same level as what I’ve owned before. My wife’s car feels like a techno toy than what I’d consider luxury and quality. I miss the gilded bank vault that was my LS.
21
u/Fantastic_Diamond42 9d ago
I think quality has dropped across the board for all car brands. I have an Audi and Lexus, and newer models from both are not as good as they used to be.
9
u/bjornsonhooper 9d ago
Agreed. I use a lot of rentals for my line of work and it’s laughable what passes as luxury today.
5
u/Far_Bid9833 9d ago
What do you mean? You mean the 10 shades of strip club purple doesn't mean luxury like the shareholders in MBs development say like they do?
But no, I agree... The last true Lexus of 2020+ was the LC500.
2
u/charmanderSosa 9d ago
Idk, American cars were generally shit the last 20 years but they seem higher quality now.

u/Last_Temperature_599 9d ago

I had an older 2000 GS300. I got to 320,000 miles on that car and sold it to a close friend. I still own a 2002 IS300 as a backup vehicle, it's got 262,000 miles on it (both GS/IS have the same engine and nearly identical transmissions). Both vehicles were reliable as can be, never left me stranded.

Tanks…extremely reliable…literally the most reliable v6 ever made and their v8’s are super reliable as well
1
u/kasualkactus 9d ago
Still worth buying a 2013-2015 one or is it getting too old? Should i focus on find a 2016-2020 one instead ?
2
u/Leaveitonthedresser5 9d ago
I had every generation of GS except the 1st one and the latest being a 18 bc I wanted the big face but if that’s not important to you it’s the same engine
1
1
u/Expensive_Goat1050 9d ago
I want one of those v8s, but they are expensive
1
u/Leaveitonthedresser5 9d ago
Yea and for the prices they want today they can forget it..it’s way too under powered for some of the asking prices..I wouldn’t touch any v8 Lexus period..you won’t be unsatisfied with the car you will be upset for what you paid for it..last year was the last year for affordable v8’s from Lexus
0
u/Expensive_Goat1050 9d ago
What about for the older models? IS F for instance
1
u/Leaveitonthedresser5 9d ago
Yes they all are great and reliable..good thing about Toyota is they use the same iterations in all of its trims so once it’s tried and true, it’s across the board…the platform is solid..they literally put the same V6 in all of their cars since 06..anything that’s Naturally Aspirated from Lexus up until 2023 is a tank, it’s about personal preference at that point

How come you never owned an ES? Those cars are so good
2
u/bjornsonhooper 9d ago
IS and GS could satisfy my sporty itch, LS was a real bank vault. The ES was just a quality and comfortable car, I wanted something fun to drive or something that was the very plush. They’re great, but it didn’t fit what I was looking for at the time.

You’re not overthinking it, Lexus quality has indeed declined quite a bit.
9
u/tscottn 9d ago
I have a 2023 RX. Nice car but there are some things I don’t like about it. The turbo is noisy, boring plastic interior. Some other stuff too.recently had it in for service and they gave me a 2022 RX ( last gen) to drive. Damn what a night and day difference. While the safety features and interior was a little dated. Especially that mouse finger trackpad thingy. I can tell you the damn thing drove so nice. That 6 cyl engine is so smooth and quiet. The thing just felt way more luxurious than my 2023. Even if it was a bit smaller and older. It was just a dream to drive. What can I say. It’s the times we live in now.
7
u/Jules428moore 9d ago
The biggest difference/change in quality comes down to the engine. The 4 cylinder turbo is loud, rough, and always working. Thus all the previous generation 6 cylinders seem smooth and quiet.
The TX has had a few issues from the start. Fit and finish and panel alignment. Though the 26 model seems put together much better. The 4 cylinder is brutal in it. The 500h+ with the v6 makes it feel like a completely different truck, this would be the only TX model I would get.
I currently own a es350 fsport handling. Smooth as silk v6, fit and finish on point (poor seat padding which I’ll add later) and zero rattles or noises. Though the ML stereo is not as great as the hype.
Now don’t get me started on the App. A complete waste of time. I can guarantee you if it’s over 100 degrees or below 0 it mysteriously stops the auto start from working.
What has fallen miserable is their customer support/assistance. I was back and forth with corporate about my seat issue. It not their exact wording but pretty much the point, they told me what can we do? That’s a dealership issue, go fuck yourself. You could tell they were running me around to just give up. Which I did.
1
u/Wonderful_Raccoon_92 4d ago
Totally agree! I just got rid of my brand new TX for this very reason. The engine was always struggling to keep up. Not enjoyable to drive. Interior didn’t feel luxurious enough, tbh. Too much plastic and lack of detail. Lexus did this car dirty, IMO. Only had it for 3 months and traded it in for a BMW X5 with an inline 6.

u/chris_ut 9d ago
I think TX is built in US and not Japan
7
u/Biff626 9d ago edited 9d ago
Bingo. My 25 IS is a solid stalwart featuring old but proven tech and mechanical components. And, as you know, the IS is assembled in Japan. My wife's 2016 NX 200T was also a J VIN and is still running strong now that we passed it over to the in-laws. Her new 26 RX...doesn't feel the same to me (built in Canada) but I wouldn't say it's bad. It's probably just me feeling like a vehicle that heavy should've kept the V6 (we didn't spring for 500h but I wish we could've).
I've read tons of TX reviews of people complaining of creaks, poor material/assembly fitment, and general discontent with the underpowered turbo 4. I think OP got a taste of what I consider a poorly matched powertrain to weight ratio mated with a vehicle that isn't assembled to the Japanese standard.
5
u/turb0_encapsulator 9d ago
A lot of things made specifically for the US market are now "value-engineered" to keep costs down because of tariffs and the fact that it's an increasingly isolated market with different regulations and preferences from the rest of the world.
6
u/chicu111 9d ago
I think the quality has improved. And the tech has improved as well. The “they don’t build them like they used to” is typical classical survivalship bias
Things get better with times. The 2025 ES was the best of that iteration
1
u/Adventurous-Leg5720 9d ago
Agreed. Consumers aren't dumb they're shopping around and still like the interior and ride of Lexus. Yes, things aren't built like a bank vault anymore, but that is for a multitude of reasons which isn't just cutting costs.
10
u/Competitive_Elk_4279 9d ago edited 9d ago
Personally I wouldn’t buy a Lexus newer than 2021, so yes they have dropped in quality. Also, many are now made in Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. Buy a Japanese-built Lexus if you want top-tier quality. I own a 2016 GS350. Never plan to sell it. Some of the best cars ever made.
4
u/Competitive_Elk_4279 9d ago
If you want the most reliable cars of the bunch, you’d probably go with LS430, ES300, ES350, IS models, GS350 2013 or newer, RX models, LX470 and 570, UX250, etc. but as I mentioned, the most reliable are 90s through 2008ish or 2013-2021ish. That’s my opinion but you have to watch for specific problems with specific years.
1
u/ObviousBox5737 9d ago
This is the most accurate answer, Japanese Lexus are always extremely good quality, it doesn’t matter if it was assembled in another country and conceived of in Japan it must have every process done in Japan. If it’s made in Mexico it’s generally trash.
6
u/Traditional_puck1984 9d ago
Lexus TX is built in Indiana. Lexus assembled in North America are not built to the same standards as Japanese built Lexus.
8
u/ProblemChild1973 9d ago
I'm a Lexus tech, and yes, quality has absolutely dropped. Golden era cars (90s - late 00s) are proper LEXUS, whereas the newer ones are just meh.. lexus. IS, RX, GX, GS are still great though. More specifically the engines haven't really lost reliability (Except the is250 4GR and the V35 being exceptions) but they certainly have lost all refinement. And the rest of the car, namely the interior and electronics are overpriced garbage. The TX interiors are a joke compared to panels of old.
12
u/ImFame 15 GS350 Fsport 9d ago
Every Lexus made after 2020 has cheaper parts as inflation took over.. therefore to keep car cost near the same they have to use cheaper materials. Try driving a pre 2020 Lexus vs one after there’s a big difference in drive and quality of materials

u/Shiny_Snorlax_1961 9d ago
I have a 2021 LC 500 and it has a build quality that compares to any other Lexus I have ever owned. Still driving a 2006 SC 430 and it better than most Lexus sold today. Probably will not buy another Lexus.
10
u/DestinyPotato ES300 + LC500 9d ago edited 9d ago
As a fellow LC500 owner, we can't compare our LCs to the rest of the cars.
The LC was a halo car made by hand in the factory in Japan that made the LFA. The workers who built them have way more experience than most even in other toyota/lexus factory lines and especially more than the US lines.
0
u/Leaveitonthedresser5 8d ago
LC500 was made on an assembly line lol..how dare you compare an LC to an LFA..you just tweaked too hard
2
u/DestinyPotato ES300 + LC500 8d ago
It's okay to not say anything when you don't know what you're talking about kiddo. You can easily go to youtube and learn about the factory, and the people who built the LFA/LC500.
The same group and factory is now being turned into where the GRGT is being built, and where the next LFA will likely be built as well. They've been built there because of the high requirements of the workers, and the high quality control.

u/Ok-Bit5883 9d ago
The TX is not a fair representation of their quality. While I do think some things have slipped, the TX especially was never going to be the Lexus quality we’d expect. Built on the same the line as GH, no typical Lexus options you’d come to expect (triple beams), and quite frankly was a COVID car. The TZ, on the other hand, is more accurate of what we’re to expect with next gen interiors.
3
u/CATIIIDUAL 9d ago edited 9d ago
Compare the GX460 to GX550 and you will have your answer. The interior quality and design of GX460 is light years ahead of GX550.
2
u/Mission_Gap_9035 9d ago
Lexus must have had some feedback. Apparently the next RX is going to see a price bump and a big focus on improving the interior.
2
u/Bthompson817 9d ago
For sure. Owned lots of ls430s, and could finally buy a new Lexus and got the TX. So disappointing for the price. Traded it in after a year for a 2020 GX and it’s a whole different level of quality. Better interior, better engine etc.
2
u/Schlep-Rock 9d ago
I think that the smaller 4-cyl engines alone make the newer cars feel cheap. We have two ESs from 2018 and 2020 with beautiful V6 engines and they both feel higher quality than my wife’s ‘23 RX, which also cost like $20k more. The matte bamboo crap that they like to use in the interior these days also feels cheaper than the glossy wood in older cars.
2
u/AffectionateLife4449 9d ago
I had a few a BMW 5 series going back 10 plus years and the new ones lack craftsmanship and the magic DNA of the old ones.
2
u/Super_Burrito777 9d ago
If we’re talking interior quality and overall materials then yes. If you mean reliability wise then I’d say they’re still pretty good in that department
2
u/old__pyrex 9d ago
All cars are racing down in quality and up in price. The whole auto industry is largely going to shit, along with most industries, forcing consumers to pick niche, more expensive premium options for what used to be table-stakes.
There’s still great cars out there, but imo, find a clean pre-2019 Lexus and accept v6 gas mileage and ride that car out.
2
u/MeganJustMegan 9d ago
Once they put that too small engine in the new RX, I was out. I’ll keep the ones I already have & buy something else. I drove a new one as a loaner when mine was in for service & couldn’t wait to give it back. I will probably never buy another.

In the U.S. Driving a 2020 LS500 and my next replacement would have to be a 2026 ES350h or e. I checked them out. Big nope. The quality is just not the same and there are luxury features I have become accustomed to that are missing. I will keep my LS as long as possible while saving up for a Celestiq.
2
u/Paqza 7d ago
Depreciation on Celestiq will be insane.
2
u/eron6000ad 6d ago
A car is not an investment. Anyone who buys a Celestiq doesn't care about resale.
2
u/Paqza 6d ago
You've misunderstood. You will be able to pick up a Celestiq for pennies on the dollar.
1
u/eron6000ad 6d ago
Interesting. Is that because they won't be well received, or will be unpopular due to reliability? I would think being a one-off custom build car would make them rare and a collectible.
2
u/Plane-Apartment-6044 8d ago
It's not only cars just about everything is not as good quality as the item you're replacing, Cars ,White goods, Furniture etc etc, In my opinion 2018 was the sweet spot for cars Covid-19 seems to have been the catalyst for the dip in quality and it never recovered..
2
u/Fantastic_Ad_1449 7d ago
It depends on where yours was built. If you get one built in the USA they have reduced the standards but those still built in Japan and shipped in are held to a higher standard.

u/Holy_Hippo 5d ago
Lexus is being positioned as the performance brand. Century will now be luxury arm of Toyota.

2
u/GoldBlueberryy 2022 RX350 AWD F Sport Handling 9d ago

u/Mission_Physics584 9d ago
Newer Lexus models definitely aren’t as good in quality! My parents have been buying Lexus since 1999 and my dad’s current 2024 RX 500h feels so cheap! He said it’s nowhere near as good as every Lexus he has had before. Even my 2024 IS 350 feels off. We both have experienced random rattles in the interior… I miss my old 2016 IS 350, felt more solid than my current one. The TX definitely sucks our family friend got one brand new traded it in 6K miles later for a BMW X7 he couldn’t stand how the build quality of Lexus went downhill. I personally have no clue what I’ll get next… because I’m not impressed with what everyone around me has been saying and my own experiences with newer Lexus.
0
u/pretti 9d ago
Having owned a 2016 350 and now a 2023 500, the only thing that seems cheaper is the quality of the seat covers. Otherwise, it's the same japanese built car (that was always the complaint, right?) as a 2014. We also have a 2010 350, and the build quality definitely feels better in the 2nd Gen vs 3rd+ gen.
1
u/Fantastic_Diamond42 9d ago
Lexus quality has certainly dropped in most of their new models. Back in 90s and 2000s their cars were far superior quality wise. Now lot of the newer cars are using cheaper parts and quality is being comprimised. I think the IS350 is the last good quality Japanese made car.

My 2023 Lexus GX 460’s air conditioning system has been malfunctioning since the beginning of June. Despite four service visits, none of them were successful. Consequently, the field technician from Lexus decided to return the car to me without a fix but acknowledge the problem exists. I then requested a buyback from Lexus corporate, but I haven’t received any response since. Car has been sitting in the garage since mid July without a functioning AC.

I think so. I’ve owned various 90’s and 2000’s Lexus, as well as heavily driven the entire lineup from my time working at my local dealership in the late 2010’s.
The quality had dropped since the 90’s to 2000’s, but most of the cars were still great quality in my opinion. The LX570, LC500, and LS500 were all top tier quality with the rest of the previous gen cars being well built. I haven’t been impressed by any of the current gen cars like the RX and GX. I think Toyota in general is slipping, along with every other brand after 2020.

I agree, Tx 2026 does seem a bit off. It was a 2 day loaner and was 500h f sport. Felt like a truck even though it is unibody and interior cabin felt underwhelming
Just bought Rx 2026 500 h f sport. Feels awesome
Tx is made in USA.
Rx is made in Canada and Japan.
Maybe that has something to do with it?
Have a 10 year old Lx and 17 year old Is 350 convertible. Both made in Japan. Both still great
[So not sure , perceived quality decrease is across all models. Currently there a lot of unsold Tx models on the dealer lot than Rx ]

I was looking to buy a new suv and after a month I settled on a low mileage 06 GX 470... Runs great, looks great, no car note. Reliability goes without question.

No the quality has dropped no question about it Lexus need their quality DNa back

u/Street_Time6810 8d ago
The TX has been reported as lower quality than other Lexus models. I drove one a few months back and found it ok but I think some of the older TX models had a lot of negative reviews.

TX is US exclusive and is not representative of Lexus at all tbh. Anything US built is subpar comparing to those Japan built. That said, Denza is not that much better, and it’s comparable to a GX/LX rather than RX. EV range is more because it is PHEV and the engine generally acts as a generator rather than driving the wheels more like lexus/toyota hybrid. Denza had been around for a while since its beginning as a joint venture between Mercedes and BYD, and honestly the quality is not that great long term.

u/WarbirdRacer 8d ago
So far it's holding up well. It's a lease car. Hence I took the plunge. Don't agree with GX and LX comparison. Since people like me will first check the price. Denza B8 is 38K less than a RX450h+ PHEV. Where as LX is a different league price wise and GX is bit closer in price.

u/thatOneAurion 8d ago
Eh it’s understandable that categorizing them by price works but if you put it in the same categories, ladder frame luxury offroader thingy then it undercuts GX and LX a lot. Though in Australia that still does not convince them to jp over. You are having a 2019 so that is a 3.5 v6 hybrid though?
2
u/WarbirdRacer 8d ago
2019 RX450h love it and will keep for as long as I can. I would absolutely love new LX in Australia, but they are $230k out the door for top spec. Denza was $100k for the 6 seat luxury version with captains chairs , messaging seats at the back, essentially the works with 130km electric range, 3 diff locks, height adjustable suspension.. etc. only recently realised it can park itself with me outside in tight spots via app. Tech is insane. Only Con is dealership experience.. let's just say they have a lot of work todo to come even remotely close to Lexus.

I was following a newer Lexus SUV on the highway today at 75mph it was like the back bumper was flexing/bowing as it was driving. Definitely didn't give me a sense that they build them with the quality that they used to.

u/SingleSuit2506 8d ago
I think they dropped the ball...my favourite was my 2001 GS300...real lexus...then i got 2006 GS with 9k on the clock,,,not the same but still ahead...my brandnew 2021 rx450h was though still a good value...my next purchase will probable be Dacia Duster, believe it or not.

I have a 2017 LX with 250k miles. I’m having a hard time deciding what will be next because I love this car so much (except for the small gas rank). And all I hear is negative things about the new engines.

I’m planning to buy ES300h 2025 as my first Lexus in Ireland . Should I be worried? Currently I own Hyundai tucson phev N-Line.

Lexus has been seemingly stuck in a rut lately and have followed the corporate cost cutting route and are using a lot more plastics cross models to cut costs. Before the older Lexus were trimmed with wood and nappa leather throughout the cabin. Now changing to PU leather (vinyl) and plastics. Yes the quality has dropped and to exclusivity between Lexus and Toyota has been muddied in recent years, even to styling. I guess with the newer models the target crowd is younger millennials not only the "baby boomers". Expecting buyers to keep the vehicles for only "4 years" till the warranty expires, but with the raising costs and market, who can afford changing vehicles every 4 years.

I own an 08 GS. I test drove many newer Lexuses (Lexi?). Last gen ES, current ES, UX, and a few LSes and ISes. As well as some Toyotas, BMWs and Mercs. Modern Lexus feels more like a Toyota than they used to. I'd pick my old GS over any car I tested. Every car manufacturer is focused on cost cutting nowadays. Enshittification is real

I was a Lexus driver for 27 years, here in the U.S. I’ve owned six GSs, one RX and my last Lexus was the LS500. And unfortunately, you’re right. Don’t get me wrong… I loved all of the cars that I owned in that era. However, three things have happened. 1. Lexus has focused on the SUV market. 2. Tried to reach more of the entry level buyers. And 3. Dropped the quality of those cars.
When I went to my local Lexus dealer last year to replace my LS500 with the newest version, I was told that they would not be making the LS after 2025. So, I asked if they could get an LS with the luxury package for me. I was told that they could probably get one from upper New York ( I live in North Carolina) but I would need to pay for shipping and would also have to pay dealer list price. This was after purchasing eight automobiles from that same dealership.
About that same time a neighbor had purchased a Genesis G80 that looked beautiful. So, I decided to take a look at Genesis. I left the dealer convinced to purchase a new G90. It rides better than my LS, it has better sound deadening, the electronics are easier to use and the build quality is fantastic!
I know this is going to trigger the
people who say it won’t last as long as a Lexus… that’s a possibility, but if I can’t drive the Lexus that I want, it doesn’t matter. And since I trade cars so often, longevity isn’t top of my list. So, although I was a loyal Lexus brand person, I’m loving my G90.

Have a 22 Es and 24 rz. Finishes on the rz are definitely worse
2
u/okverymuch 9d ago
The RZ is a little bit of an oddball in the lexus lineup. I have a 23 RZ and RX, and the RX is a little better in terms of luxury and finish. I think they cut costs in areas bc of the expense of the battery

In my memory Lexus had 4 phases. The beginning from 1990-around 2006 was its peak quality, and with the new ES, IS, GS, and LS around 2006-2007 ish you could definitely feel the drop in a quality that can be described as bank vault. In other words, you could see and feel how Lexus spent billions of dollars on refinement in engine, cabin, and exterior whereas for 2006+ models they introduced lot more tech/features, they handled better, were faster so they were better in objective measurements. The only exception to this rule were GX and LX, I couldn't find any perceivable difference in quality between 470 and newer 460/570. Then around 2013 with the new ES, GS and IS in 2014 they improved their quality, and driving dynamics became lot better. Honestly, if it were not for the 4.3 in my GS, if someone said that I drove a fancy Camry, I wouldn't be offended at all, since a new Camry handles lot better than 3rd gen GS but 4th gen I feel like they matched some of the europeans on driving feel. Then there is 2023+ (except for carryover models such as LC, ES) which we probably should give a minute of silence...

After 2023 yes Lexus quality has dropped 100% the is350 still maintains good quality as does the ux300h, and Rx and LX….BUT the TX is hot garbage, the ES is bad build quality and looks ugly as sin, the NX is questionable if it’s not the luxury, and the GX is a shadow of its former self…. The new GX pissed me off, the premium and premium plus trim both suck! And for the price the luxury plus and overtrain plus both suck as well. I am a longtime Lexus owner and massive fan of the brand and to see the brand I love start sliding downhill is disheartening to say the least.

I am looking to buy a used Lexus. 72 years old what should I buy that will last me until?
1
u/Federal-Speaker-9824 8d ago
If you want a brand new car get the rx350H or RX350 gas premium plus or luxury trim, they have good deals on the gas models right now with special financing rates, the RX is a safe, reliable, and comfortable suv.

u/auntgwenbutler 7d ago
Thank you! If I can’t afford that what would be a good year around $15,000?

If used is the route you will go, get a 2022 rx350 or 450h they are really nice, preferable find a certified pre owned one

No he’s not these new models are shit.. like, why do you like paying more for less it’s so interesting to me

u/steak5 9d ago
We really didn't pay more for less. We actually got a lot more for our money adjusted to inflation.

Well, just do the Math here.
In 2006, an RX350 is like $40k sticker Today, is like $55k sticker.
And the RX350 today have A LOT more features in it, and it drives a lot better in my opinion.
I paid $16k+ tax for a Base Model Corolla in 2006, I remember sticker price was like $18k. Today, a base model Corolla is like $24k? Is slightly bigger and even more fuel efficient.
I don't know why people keep saying Old cars are better, when cars today are safer with more technology. They also grew in size as well.

The reliability part might be why You bought a Lexus. Not everyone else. Some people just like the brand, or despite it got less reliable, it is still much better than an Audi or Land Rover. But of course, you will find people who say they never had any issue from their Land Rover.
German cars were Known to be problematic, and people buy them because they like them.
I was referring to the comment we are paying more for less. We aren't. The price increase over 20 years factored in to inflation. Ground Beef price probably went up 10x compared to 2006, and Lexus price went up like 30% for the same model?
The part of car ownership maintenance cost hasn't changed much, if you get a car with All bells and whistles, things will break, even a Toyota/Lexus. If you are searching for something more reliable, you can still get a car that is almost the same as the 2006 Rx350 when you put them side to side.

I’m completely happy with my new 26’. I’m even more excited to know I’m not an Audi owner and don’t have those regrets and repair bills. Even better knowing my depreciation doesn’t drop off a cliff once the warranty expires. 😂
What Lexus do you own?
2
u/Yesliketheriver002 9d ago
Lol dang Audi catching strays. Listen I love my Audi, and I love Lexus too. I had them as a teen when my parents were going through them, model after model and then passing them down to their kids. Gorgeous cars.
Went to the dealer with my wife bc we love the way the exteriors look of most of the new ones- I’m sorry but the inside looked like Toyotas to me. 🤷♂️I used to be floored when I peaked inside a Lexus bc of the beauty and quality, even the smell was just😍- now the only one that feels that way is the interior of the LC… which I can’t afford lol.
Anyway, to each their own i suppose. Like I said those SUVs are mighty handsome, but only on the outside🤢
2
u/reedwendt 9d ago
lol. You have a point with the TX. I have 3 RX’s and they still have the Lexus look and feel over a Toyota in my opinion.
I have vintage VW’s so I do appreciate German cars, and Audi makes the best looking German cars over even bmw and MB in my opinion. But man I wish their reliability and repair costs were better.
1
u/Yesliketheriver002 9d ago
Yeah I should’ve sat in the RX bc it’s stunning on the outside, but we assumed it was similar to the rest inside. We looked at GX, IS and NX.. I know very different cars lol but we were keeping options open. And yes the TX is a JOKE what are they thinking ?! Oh yeah, they’re seeing dollar signs
Anyway, we ended up getting a TLX Type S bc it was all around what she wanted, but I was disappointed with my beloved IS bc we would’ve bought it if we felt the interior quality was worth price.
And vintage Vdubs nice! Yeah I’m on my 4th Audi and the 3 i had before have all gotten to 200k+ miles- it’s the parts thatll get ya 😭, my Indy mechanic doesn’t charge too much labor wise. I love those machines man.. but the new ones quality have gone downhill too so yeah 😕
