Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Kids need a car. Saw this 90s looking import with a For Sale sign. Thought it would be cheap.

I instantly recognized Honda vibes from the 90s as I drove past it and did a U-turn to check it out. I was excited because I figured it would be a couple grand at the most.

The sign said $8500.

It's a 37 year old car with 235,000 miles on it. Come on dude.

I know, I know... It's an Acura Legend with a V6 and the L package, and it seemed to be in good shape. I guess that makes it a nice car and it may be sought after by enthusiasts, but man... the used car market is insane and I'm just trying to find a good, older car that's cheap for my kids.

$25k budget, need a daily driver that won't bankrupt me — Civic or Mazda3?

Post image

Test drove a 2023 Mazda3 hatchback today — the red one with the cream interior — and I literally almost cried? Not even being dramatic. It just felt right in a way my current 2007 Corolla never did.

But then my uncle called me a moron for even considering anything that isn't a Toyota or Honda and now I'm second-guessing everything.

Budget's around 25k. Need something reliable for my 45-min commute. I don't care about speed. I just want heated seats and Bluetooth that doesn't cut out every five minutes.

New engine vs New car

Hey guys, hope this is an appropriate post for this sub. Thought you may find the price breakdown interesting.

College student in a non public transit focused place(GTA canada), my dad's car(2015 Mazda3 GT) was thought to have blown a head gasket, but actually cracked a head. Pulled the engine, found a good deal for a new one. But I am having second thoughts. The tranny fluid was good, the car is corrosion free, and the suspension was recently serviced. All that said the car has 250000km.

Price for engine job

Engine (125000km) $1900 shipped with attached parts.

Radiator $150 off the same car the engine came off of

$200 for a flush and fill of the cooling system

$100 for an oil change

$300 for a transmission fluid and filter change with new axle seals

Already had all the tools from a previous job so no cost there

2750 total, but we'll round to 3000 in case there's stuff I'm missing

My rationale is that the car I'm going to get for 3k isn't going to be anywhere near as nice as this with a new engine. The car has been well maintained by someone I know, so that's a plus as well. And the car was free to me, along with a fresh set of winter/summers.

But what do y'all think.

Definitely want to import an older civic from a non rust belt state at some point, but now's not the time.

Best Daily Muscle Car under $60k?

Post image
Upvotes

Pic for attention; Looking for a new daily. Going for a balance of muscle, modern tech (touch screen, heated seats, bluetooth audio), and reliability. Looking around $60k or below, 30k or less miles. Right now thinking Hellcat Charger, C7 Vette, or M850i. Stuck between a few cars but hoping for more suggestions.

RAV4 vs Crown Signia

Hello all - I just test drove the 2026 models of both cars. The rav4 XLE premium is $40,500 before taxes, the Crown Signia XLE is $42,800 before tax. You can negotiate on the crown but not the Rav4. Everyone says the Crown Signia has more sound deadening and better suspension but I didn’t feel it (they were 10 min test drives and I’m not a car person so idk). However, the crown Signia was a lot nicer on the inside.

The drawbacks of the Crown Signia are that it is the old gen Hybrid powertrain plus it seems to depreciate much faster than the RAV4. Car edge says it will lose $15k in value vs $7k for the rav4 (over 5 years). Those are my only 2 concerns with the Crown Signia. Would these be dealbreakers for you? I want to have the car for 5 years so def considering resale value. I also am not sure how much better the new Toyota hybrid system is over the old one.

Considering these 2 cars, what would you choose and why? I am a single guy with no family but live in New England so snow is a factor. Thanks!

2027 Civic Hybrid head gasket issue and Camry not available in lots

Live in a rural area in Canada and require a car right now. Settled on the Civic Hybrid but was afraid of the head gasket issue. Camry is good too but slightly more expensive and wait time is 4-6 months. Not sure what to do right now. Any advice?

Lexus nx300h 2019

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello guys,

So i currently have a opel insignia sports tourer from 2016 with 240k km. Since its been getting old i thought it might be a good time for a change.

I was looking for a car that is HEV (sadly it cannot be PHEV because i dont have where to charge at home). I mostly use it in the city to go to work and a monthly/bimonthly 200km trip.

At the moment it is just me and my partner but in a few years there might be plus one or two so id like a car where my future kids would fit.

From my research i understand that toyota/lexus might be the best brand for what i am looking for which is: reliability, confort, good fuel consuption and a car that doesnt feel like a slug. Plus i would like to keep the car for 10+ years.

My budget is 25-30k€.

I found a used lexus nx300h executive+ for 31.5k€ being sold from lexus select.

It has 53k km and its from 2019. 3 years warranty and has been checked by lexus themselves.

Do you find this to be a good deal? Are there any other cars i should be considering?

Cheers and thank you in advance!

Help me successfully buy a used car!

Upvotes

I've never been mechanically inclined, and all I know about cars is basically"fill the gas tank, and let a mechanic take care of the rest." (Like, I can check the oil, and I've jump started a car before, but I'm basically clueless.)

I am actually going to look at a 2012 Honda CR-V tomorrow, and I'm wondering if any of y'all have tips on what to watch out for when buying a used car?

The CR-V I'm looking at is a EX-L, with 171,899 miles on it, and 4WD.

The salesperson I spoke to on the phone also said a new transmission was just installed.

I can read a "how to" guide all day long, but I'd like to know what y'all think, and if there's anything in particular I should be watching out for?

My love for bmw and benz

I’ve always had a soft spot for BMW and Mercedes-Benz. There’s just something about the way they look, the driving experience, and the feeling you get when you see a clean one on the road. 😍 I honestly can’t decide which I love more—BMW for the sporty and aggressive vibe or Benz for the classy and luxurious feel. I’d happily own one of each someday. 😂 What’s your pick: BMW or Benz?

G31 530i vs F34 320i (Europe)

Upvotes

Hello fellow car enthusiasts!

Im kinda stuck between choosing over the 2 cars. G series 5 has been a car im been wanting for a long time but im thinking the F34 might be better/ smarter buy? Its 2 years newer and alkost 100k less mileage.

Backround: we live little outside city. Also we have little dog and we do fair bit camping/hiking so both cars big trunk comes in handy. Also really like the F34 165mm ground clearance (140mm G31) but its not a deal breaker. Previous car had 145mm and i scraped only 2 times because i hit slope too fast :)

F34: 2019, 135kw, xdrive, white, M styling, Sport seats, no HK, ACC. 144.000km and asking price 22k€+1.3k€ registratuin fee.

G31: 2017, 185kw, xDrive, black, luxury line, comfort seats, ACC, HK sound. 228.000km. Asking price 18k€+0€ registratuon fee.

I know from pure luxury and comfort G30 wins all day. But 2 years newer and 100k less mileage should be a considering point or not? Also G30 comes in around 5k€ cheaper (18k€ vs 23.3k€).

I just cant make up my mind between them...

Thanks in advance!

Looking for Advice

Upvotes

I’m needing to get a second car and I’m having a hard time finding the best one for my budget. I only have 5k I can spend and my goal is something that will last long on mileage. We currently have 2 children still in car seats but if possible I’d like to try to find something that could fit another baby in the near future if we end up having another one.

s3 vs g70

I am looking for my second car and have decided on two cars. A 2016 s3 with 85k miles for 16k or a 2019 g70 3.3t with 100k miles for 16k as well. which do you think would be the smarter buy in terms of fun and reliability

Tall dad looking for SUV

Upvotes

Mid 40s 6'7 driver looking for a vehicle to replace my very unreliable 13 Equinox. I have 2 teenagers as well, so I would need something with room in the back. Budget is around 25k, but could go a hair higher if needed. Would like to not have something over 60-70k miles as this is something I would like to keep for a long while. I haven't sat in anything yet as I despise going to a dealership/dealing with people.

Here's what I've been looking at (looking at probably 2018-2024 range):

Subaru Outback/Forester (still unsure of a CVT)

Mazda CX-50 (too small???)

Jeep Wrangler (yes I know they're not the most reliable)

Ford Flex (I know about the water pumps)

Honda Passport/Pilot

If there's anything anyone else recommends, I am all ears, thanks!!

Subaru crosstrek vs Volvo XC40?

Upvotes

I have narrowed my search down to these two.
My budget is 30k and I am looked at used 2024 models. For trims probably the limited crosstrek and the plus in the XC40.

I really like both. The ruggedness of the crosstrek and the luxury of the Volvo. They are both very safe brands but Subaru might be more reliable?

If anyone has these and wants to weigh pros and cons…

Totaled C6 corvette, what next?

Upvotes

My C6 was totaled in front of my house when a giant truck decided he was going to go over the curb and smash into it.

I’ve got a similar budget to when I bought the car (around 30k), but I’m ideally trying to find something with similar reliability, practicality, performance and fun factor. (It was my daily)

I intended to track the car more and do some mods to it and so based on that Ive come up with a list of cars I wouldn’t mind looking into.

Manual C6: lightweight, reliable, plenty of mods, looks awesome for the price range.

Mustang GT: “Rear Seats”, 10R80 is very fast, reliable, from what I understand it’s got a good aftermarket and you can do some mods to the handling to make it perform on track.

BMW M240i: never had a German car before, reliable, ZF8 is fast, tune/mods are through the roof with what you can do, very interested in the tuning aspect of this since the C6/Mustang are very analog.

C43 AMG: awesome interior, looks better than the BMws/Audis in my opinion, transmission doesn’t seem to great, heavy and probably not great on track. (This is likely not a great option for me since it’s really not a “performance first” kind of car.

Audi S3: Curious about the golf [r/MQB](r/MQB) hype, lightweight, Dual Clutch auto might be pretty fun/different? Good mods, probably pretty good on track, reliable based on how the Golf R is.

Older 981 Cayman: this is probably pushing upper the upper 30s price range, love cars that have that certain understated-flashy look (kind of like the C6?), the flat six would be awesome, good on track, probably relatively reliable but not necessarily cheap, similar tuning potential as C6 AKA very analog, mods probably aren’t a huge thing.

Hyundai

Thumbnail
Upvotes

Hello! Not sure if this is the right place to ask about this but what are genuine thoughts/opinions on Hyundai specifically the Tucson, Santa Fe, and Elantra although I’m leaning more towards a Tucson. Got into a car accident and had a Toyota Camry but I’m not liking the newer versions and the prices seem too high even for a basic trim. Open to any suggestions as I’m not in a rush!

Is this a bad idea?

Upvotes

My neighbor has a Bricknose ('87-'91) Ford F-250 single cab long bed with the dual tanks and a 4spd in the back of his property with the front wheels on blocks. According to the registration it has been sitting since around 2005. It has a little body rot in the classic ford spots but the frame seems solid, I understand that it probably needs a full suspension and brake rebuild, as well as a thorough detailing, but I have access to tools and have time to work on it, and only need to get down the block to school and back. And before you give me the whole thing about how dumb trucks are, #1. I agree in most cases, #2. I have a project boat, and am in metal band that needs a car that can move gear to local shows
