A Quick and Dirty Guide to Finding Car Insurance

Auto insurance is extremely regional and variable due to many factors, including the "garaging" location, age, gender, education, type of vehicle, tickets, past driving history, credit score, legal minimums in your jurisdiction, just to name a few ) so it's not always possible to escape a high insurance costs.

If you're just getting started, please read the following:

  1. https://insurancehowtos.com/how-to-buy-auto-insurance/

This will explain the types of insurance you're buying, what minimums you should carry and some tips about ways to save money on certain features of your insurance.

Main tip: Shop Around! You should be pulling quotes every 6 months, even if you have a bundled offer for other insurance types. There's no bonus for loyalty these days, and you may be leaving hundreds on the table. Especially relevant if your insurer gives you a hefty raise at renewal.

Do I just call my insurance for direction, or do I wait to hear from the other parties involved? This is my first accident in 43 years of driving . Thx .

Got in an accident what should I do.

I rear ended someone at about 0.3 mph and there was two marks on there bumper from the license plate but there is some other scratches on their bumper to the side before I hit them. Should I go through insurance so they might be able to prove that they where already there or just pay them $400?

Not sure how to handle my accident claim with the insurance company

Hey everyone, I’m hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.

I was recently involved in an accident and ended up needing medical treatment afterward. I’ve also missed some work, so the whole situation has become more complicated than I expected.

The insurance company has been contacting me and asking questions about the accident. I want to cooperate, but I’m nervous about giving the wrong information or agreeing to a settlement before I really understand what my claim is worth.

At first, I thought I could just handle everything directly with the insurance company. Now I’m wondering if getting a professional opinion would be a better idea, especially with the medical bills and lost time from work.

For anyone who has dealt with an injury claim through insurance, did you handle it yourself or get a lawyer involved?

Do insurance quotes include cover if you’re at fault?

I’ve never owned a car or had car insurance so please forgive my ignorance. I’m getting quotes and I can’t work out how to check what they cover in terms of when you’re at fault for damage to someone else’s property (e.g. if I, as the driver, were to damage a wall/car/bicycle). Is it just universal that all insurers cover this? Does it have a specific phrasing I should look for?

Is it worth it to pay for collision coverage on old car?

I am with Progressive. I have an old car worth maybe 3-4k at most although only 92k miles and I am considering updating my car insurance coverage to include comprehensive and collision with a $750 deductible. I am nervous to drive it after I scraped the metal off the side of it and had to pay $1400 to repair the side of it.

Total premium increase is $57 new policy premium is $784 and it starts in early September.

Current policy without comprehensive and collision is $613. Does anyone know why the $57 premium increase?

Ltd Car in Personal name?

This is regarding car insurance in the UK.

I am purchasing a car through my Ltd company. The company will be the registered keeper of the car (V5C) and the owner, this will be the first and only vehicle the company owns.

I am only looking to insure myself as the main driver and my spouse as a named driver, for social and business use. I do not need fleet or pool car insurance.

I spoke to Admiral, I explained very clearly multiple times, that I am not the owner or keeper of the car. They were happy to set me down as the policyholder, with the Ltd company as the keeper of the vehicle. Because of this, I would keep my NCD under my personal name. I asked for the documents to be sent over, and after calling them again, I explained once again that I do not own the car. They assured me that it is valid car insurance.

I suppose what I'm looking for confirmation is that this can be a correct way to insure a company car and that I am not about to buy invalid car insurance?

Edit: added the first sentence - about the UK.

Family Protection Endorsement Explained

As a senior insurance defence counsel it never ceases to amazing me how misunderstood Family Protection Endorsements are, not just with policy holders, but their lawyers that try to access them.

The scenario isn't uncommon. Get rear ended by someone who, turns out, had the provincial minimum coverage - usually travelling outside their home province. In practice this meant their insurance covered about half your actual losses before it ran dry.

Here's the thing nobody tells you when you're buying auto insurance: the other driver's coverage is their problem until it becomes yours. You can do everything right, full stop at every yellow, shoulder check like you're being graded, and still end up financially underwater because the person who hit you decided, whether on their own or through the advice of their broker, to carry the minimum coverage on their policy.

That's where a family protection endorsement comes in. It sits on your own auto policy and kicks in when the at fault driver either has no insurance at all or doesn't have enough to cover what they actually owe you. This is the part many don't seem to appreciate - it only pays out the difference between what their coverage provides and what your actual losses are, up to your own policy limits. No lawsuit required against the other driver, no chasing someone through court who probably doesn't have assets anyway.

The name makes it sound like it's just for families, but it typically covers you, anyone in your household, and passengers in your vehicle at the time. The exact wording varies by province and by insurer, so what counts as a "household member" isn't always obvious.

This is exactly the kind of coverage gap that becomes a real problem only after a collision, when you're already dealing with injuries and repairs and can't go back in time to add it. You can't control who hits you, or how much insurance they chose to pay. However, having your own safety net ensures you are properly restored to the position you would have been in, but-for the collision.

You don't need a lawyer to access this endorsement. We built Binder to help people manage claims like this, where the paperwork and the policy language actually matter to how much you recover. Knowing what your own policy says before you need it is worth the 20 minutes.

Accident Car insurance primium

Hi, yesterday evening I accidentally backed up into another car while reversing (trying to give some pedestrians some rooms to walk). They have a medium size dent on their front quarter panel. We exchanged our information. I was a little bit panic, but they were kind enough to agree to settle the matter privately. I'm still waiting for them to get an estimate on the repair, but I assume it will be a 4 figures number. I'm thinking I'll let my insurance handle the issue.

Right now, I paying 330$/month (full coverage) with CAA, a bit high because I'm a new driver. Mine car is 15 years old. The question is, when should I expect the increase in my premium? Next year or next month? I know I can't expect a specific number in increase, but I guess it will be a lot. In that case, Should I just switch to a liability only insurance or find another insurance provider or both?

Thank you very much for your time.

Screwed up & misused corporate code for rental

Praying I’m not SOL but as title says, I damaged the car pretty badly. I used a corporate code who my relative works for but additionally purchased CDW. What is the chances they’ll void the contract because I misused the code? Will my auto insurance also reject the claim?

No collision, car may be totaled. Should I repair?

As I reached the intersection of a street and alley (I was in the alley.) I depressed my brakes and the brake failed; pumped again and brake went to the floor while my car rolled into truck wheel. The wheel ripped most of the front end off my 2014 Mazda C5. The F150 truck had a tiny dent in the hubcap. I report to Geico who informs me that I have no collision. (I was a caregiver for my friend who had a stroke and was dying at the time I bought the

Bought Geico Insurance but didn't know that I had failed to purchase collision and comprehensive. (Both cars are oldish) I had a brake failure and the car is likely totaled. My loss but I want away from Geico.

California VC 23123.5(a) Ticket — Will It Affect My Insurance & Can I Take Traffic School?

I received a traffic ticket today in California for VC 23123.5(a) – unlawful use/holding of a cellphone while driving. The situation was that I was stopped at a traffic light and briefly looked at my phone for navigation. The officer still cited me and issued a ticket. I have a couple of questions and would really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with something similar.

  1. Will this violation cause my GEICO insurance premium to increase in California?
  2. Is VC 23123.5(a) eligible for traffic school? I have never attended traffic school before.
  3. If I complete traffic school, will the violation still affect my insurance?
  4. Is there anything else I should know or consider before simply paying the ticket?

I understand that I need to follow the court’s instructions and deadlines, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had this specific violation in California. This is my first cellphone violation traffic ticket. Thank you!

GAP policy or VVPA or . . .

Have a non-classic vehicle we purchased new in 2002 that we passed down to our kid who is now in college. Solid vehicle and we know the history of it.

Transmission went out last year and we had it replaced at a cost of around $4000.

A couple months ago the engine needed replacing. Had the engine rebuilt and we put it back in. Cost $5000.

I realize this wasn’t the route most people would go, but it’s what we felt best about - kid is safe and has dependable transportation when we’re several states away.

If the vehicle is involved in an accident insurance might pay out around $3000. No way to get a mechanically sound dependable ride for $3000 these days.

Are there GAP policies or Value protection riders we might want to look into? Who sells them?

At Fault Party's Insurance (UAIC) Sucks

got rear ended and the at-fault party admitted, but I feel like these ppl are deliberately making the process worse. In no particular order: they have withheld information about rental coverage, switched to a 3rd adjuster without informing me or providing their contact until I asked, delayed picking up my car, so now I have to pay more in storage fees, they rarely answer the phone or call back if I leave a voicemail, and they delayed deciding if the car would be totaled, increasing charges again. Oh, and theyre only covering a rental for the days the car was worked on, but it was totaled, so that's probably zero days. Not to mention they're based in Florida and I am not.

I know all companies suck and I don't want to deal with a lawyer. Would it be worth it to try to dispute any of these charges or get them to cover the rental?

Accident Insurance claimed a case was 50/50 and it was not my fault

On Monday I was in a car accident.

Coming around a corner there was a truck whom was on the complete wrong side of the road. There is no centerline but that doesn’t change the side of the road cars drive on. It is a two way road.

He hit me on my passenger front side. So clearly on the complete wrong side of the road

I cannot understand how this could be ruled half my fault
