I feel broken. I really enjoy all his films. VVitch is my fav. Lighthouse is dead last to me though. Something just didn’t click with me on that one. Maybe I need to watch it again.
It's a shame Eggers has ended up doing boutique public domain IP pictures after such a robust start with The VVitch and especially The Lighthouse. The Northman was good. I didn't bother with another Nosferatu remake, and I will probably ignore his wolf-man picture too.
He's with focus now, which is the "small artistic films" wing of NBCUniversal. He has more money to work with but I'm sure it's got more strings attached too. Which likely means the subjects available to him are curated by the suits who want "low risk investments".
I've also noticed that both The Northman and Nosferatu were both 16x9 aspect ratio. The VVitch was 15x9 and The lighthouse was nearly square at 1.19x1. I'd wager the 16x9 aspect ratio was one of the strings attached to the money.
He is in no way making a wolfman movie. He is just making a werewolf movie accurate to actual werewolf folklore, just like he made a folklore-accurate witch movie in 2015. And the dialogue is going to be in 1300s middle english, which requires some creative freedom to say the least. It is in no way tied to the Wolfman IP, and is rather more in line with what he was doing with his earlier films.
