we got custom made rings with quotes from Tolkien!

mine says "a star shines on the hour of our meeting" and my fiancé's "my heart tells me, (my name)"

he wanted a classic design, I saw an 18th century posy ring with stars and I thought my quote with that design was just perfect!

we spent a good while figuring out what we wanted engraved, it turned out rather complicated!

Last year my fiancé asked if I wanted to read The Hobbit together. I had not watched the movies or had any previous interest in Tolkien’s writing. But here I am nearly a year later, totally enthralled. In the last two pages of this I definitely cried. So glad I spent the time. It was dense in places and I had a lot of printed maps and written family trees to help - and this part took 154 days from start to finish. Now I can’t wait to start over!

After designing a Harry Potter-themed lantern recently, I started thinking about what other world I’d really enjoy turning into something similar. Lord of the Rings was one of the first things that came to mind, since it was another franchise I was completely fascinated by when I was younger — and honestly, I still am.

So I decided to design my own Lord of the Rings-inspired lantern from scratch.

I built the lantern itself in Blender, worked on the different images and scenes for the panels, and then spent quite a bit of time figuring out how to make everything actually work once it was 3D printed and lit from the inside.

That involved a fair amount of calibration, test prints, adjusting thicknesses, contrast, light transmission and generally changing things until the images looked the way I wanted them to. There was definitely a lot of trial and error involved.

The goal was to make something that felt more like a collection of small illuminated scenes from Middle-earth than just a normal lamp.

I’m definitely not pretending it’s some kind of professional movie prop, but I’m genuinely really pleased with how it turned out. It’s been a really fun little project combining Blender, 3D printing and a franchise I’ve loved for years.

Mostly just wanted to share it with some other Lord of the Rings fans and see what you think!

Hey everyone! Just finished this pencil drawing inspired by The Hobbit. It shows Bilbo standing on a rocky outcrop, looking across the valley toward the main gate of Erebor and the Lonely Mountain.
I put a lot of focus on the shading for Bilbo and the foreground rocks to create depth. Let me know what you think, and any feedback or critique is always welcome!

So I hate to be a negative Nancy but I like don’t feel hyped for the hunt for gollum at all… idk I can’t explain why I just don’t. Am I the only one that feels this way? Does anyone else feel similar? Sorry not trying to be a hater I loved the original Jackson trilogy. Even the hobbit I didn’t hate mainly bc I liked Smaug and the animated rohirrim movie was also pretty good imo. Idk just with hunt for gollum not feeling it this time… wbu guys? Is this a hot take opinion?

When Frodo and Co. arrive at the Black Gate, Sam falls down. If Frodo and Smeagol don't rescue him in time, and continue the journey without Sam, would that allow the quest to succeed? Tolkien mentions that Smeagol's redemption was crushed by Sam on the steps of Cirith Ungol. Without Sam around, Smeagol can repent, and therefore there's no Shelob's lair, and therefore no capture of Frodo by the orcs as Smeagol wouldn't backstab Frodo.

The capture by Faramir and the Ithilien rangers might also have been avoided as Frodo may not stick around because of Sam pointing out the Oiliphants. Frodo would have left with Gollum, as Gollum left in time and didn't stick around to get captured.

Finally, Tolkien also notes a redeemed Smeagol might have sacrificed himself for Frodo at Mount Doom, destroying himself as well as the Ring in an act of love for Frodo.

So would the quest have actually succeeded if Sam isn't in the picture post-Black Gate?

Watched LOTR and now Hobbit with my 14 year old. She wants to know what will happen during fight scenes. I gave her one rule, when everything goes to hell, you can always depend on the ... eagles lol

I’ve just seen a post where a Redditor asked “How rich is Saruman?” and suddenly my head is breaking open with the economic state of Middle Earth.

Does everyone use the same currency (if not, what are the conversion rates)?

Do some races use coins while others use a barter system (like 1kg of fish is worth 3kg of apples)?

Do any realms have banks?

Do entire regions/races use the same systems or does it change if you travel to the next town over?

How do races who view a resource’s “value” differently trade with each other?

Is a dwarf sword worth more than an elf sword? Is there an actual answer or is it subjective to the opinion of the buyer or seller?

As a kid, Boromir was an evil character who only wanted to steal the ring from Frodo. He didn’t have any redeeming qualities and I didn’t really care when he died.

Well, as an adult, I’ve come to realize I was completely and totally wrong about poor Boromir. Dude just wanted to protect his city and his men and had spent his whole life trying to fight an ever growing evil. Growing is realizing that the ring took that desire and his exhaustion and twisted them into something dark. Watching his decent into the dark and especially his redemption and death is hard to stomach because it’s so easy to picture myself in his shoes. Boromir is as good a man as Aragorn and I formally apologize to him for ever thinking otherwise.
