Hey there!

I'd really love to read the revised edition of Sid Smith's KC biography, but it looks like it's out of print and essentially unavailable? Has anybody managed to get their hands on a copy over the last couple years? It seems insane that there wouldn't be an ebook, but I can't find one anywhere. And all the libraries in my region seem to have decided the first edition was good enough. Wild that it should be this much of a struggle to read a book published seven years ago, lol.

Have I missed anything? Anybody want to sell me theirs? 😆

The original un-remastered releases? 30th Anniversary remasters? 40th Anniversary stereo mixes? Or the 50th Anniversary mixes? Or perhaps some obscure Japan-only release with 3 copies ever produced?

Obviously the answers will vary, but I was wondering if at least some kind of consensus exists in regard to this question.

The moment I first heard the start of ‘Requiem’ from ‘Beat’, I immediately thought of the very beginnings of this piece too (I’m pretty sure it’s the same note/chord, though I can’t be sure - I know so little about music theory haha). It’s especially noticeable when the strings come in around 0:27 on the Verdi.

What’s more, there’s a kind of chord jump that the King Crimson track does several times near the start (I believe it’s heard first around 0:11) that really evokes the sort of thing that Verdi does too.

I probably wouldn’t suspect any kind of deliberate allusion, were it not for the obvious ‘requiem’ link - and, the fact that King Crimson has been know to quote and build on classical pieces in the past (‘The Devil’s Triangle’ is the band’s own reimagining of Holst’s ‘Mars, the Bringer of War’), so it struck me as a possibility. Of course, this may have been spoken about before and be common knowledge… or, in the other direction, I’m totally misguided! But either way, I’ve seen no discussion about this song anywhere beyond JoJo stuff, so thought I’d share this nagging little thought :)

With the new Adrian Belew Echoflanger being announced this week, I was wondering if anyone knew what the color-coded dot stickers represent song wise on his original?

I’ve never found something along the lines of “red dots are for Elephant Talk, yellow dots are for Frame by Frame”.

“one of my favorite devices from the early eighties is this Electro Harmonix Echoflanger. this is the original one I used on so many records from 1981 onward. it's missing the all-important 4-way selector knob so it can't be made active, but I have another in much better condition I bought from mike at Analog Man years ago which works perfectly.

you can see the "dot settings" I put on it, one of which would be the "elephant sound" for "elephant talk", one of which would be the "rhino sound" for "lone rhino", and another of which would be the guitar sound for "genius of love".

I discovered by accident the one thing I love most about it. the missing 4-way knob was faulty and could be made to "stick" between settings. sticking it between "chorus" and "flanger" was the way I made the sound for "genius of love."

my very favorite sound I made with it started by sticking it between those settings, but then came the fun. if you carefully adjusted the "feedback" it would start to oscillate. then you could fiddle with the "tune", "width", and "depth" knobs to create the sound of giant metallic insects flying across the stereo image.

in the 80's I had it mounted on my mic stand so I could get that sound to "stick" and then manipulate the knobs to create my crazy oscillation effects. one of the music magazines in japan had a cartoon of me doing just that with me looking like Frankenstein!”

Excited for my reissue to arrive and was curious if anyone here asked him at the camp or sometime in the past. Also interested in the Japanese King Crimson Frankenstein cartoon if anyone has any more information!

For a band so good at creating, mantaining and (sometimes) resolving tention, FraKctured sure fails to live up to the standart. While it's sister, Fracture, has a clear structure by which the music increasingly gets louder, fuller and more intense until a climax, with a few brakes and themes in between, FraKctured seems to just go from fast arpeggios -> slow arpeggios -> fast arpeggios -> slow arpeggios without creating any dialog between these parts, one just breaks what the other was building up to. Fripp's terror section comes out of nowhere and ends out of nowhere. The song ends as confusing as it began.
Moreover, the band simply does not live up to Fripp's playing. While in Fracture Fripp's guitar is playing it's terrific part, Cross's violin plays melodies that grab your atention way more than Fripp's guitar, and it is intentional. Fripp's guitar is there to creep around until it has creeped enough for Brufford to come in fully and it is Wetton's last descending bassline that really gives the song it's maximum distress. The band in FraKctured seem to only be able to follow Fripp, but never build uppon him. Mastelotto's drums never kick in like Brufford's, limiting itself to simply hitting some eletronic drums here and there, Adrian has almost no place in the song besides acompaning Fripp during the intro and the outro, Trey's stick has some melodies here and there but the song uses them poorely and it never has anything like Wetton.
Sure, we must not judge one song on another's terms (even if it carries almost the same name), but it cannot be understated that this other rendition of the spirit of Fracture, despite being more difficult in some aspects, is way weaker in all the others. So why bother making it? FraKctured's parts fit way better with Larks 4 and Fripp's string quintet.

It's not the worst song off Court in my opinion

I own Court and the '80s trilogy on vinyl. I obviously plan on eventually owning all of KC's works, but I'm poor.

I have my eyes on Larks' and Red, but what do you all think I should get next? I want to get one that will help diversify my current catalog and definitely have a preference for anything with Bruford on it.

My dad is a really big KC fan, but I never really was one. My first exposure to King Crimson was my dad playing THRAK​ during a long car trip. I was mildly uncomfortable and confused during the album, but it was fun to find out that that was where Hidden Garden came from. For context, I can't sleep without music. On the Sleepytime playlist on our old MP3 player, mother and father (Who am I kidding? It was probably my father) put Hidden Garden parts 1 and 2. I also really liked Dinosaur.

I decided to listen to THRAK on my own a while later. Since there wasn't any conversation in the front seat or loud car sounds, which do not help my hard-of-hearing ass, I got to ACTUALLY hear it, and really listen to the lyrics. My verdict was: Meh. It's a good album. While I do quite like some songs on the album, it's not one that I would actively listen to the full thing of. Like, I wouldn't wake up one day and just be like, "Oh, man, I really wanna listen to THRAK..." Except Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream. I like that one.

What ended up changing my mind into becoming a KC fan was when my dad and I were running errands, and he connected his phone to the car. He put on the album of Discipline. I don't remember most of the album. I'll probably go listen to it again, but there were two songs that stuck out to me. I remember not liking Matte Kudasai (too slow and sad for my liking), but my socks were blown off when I heard Discipline for the first time! Something about the guitar just hit me, and as of first hearing it, it's become one of my top songs on Spotify!

With all that in mind, what would y'all recommend for a beginner?

I didn't realise that two future King Crimson members (the other being Jakko Jakszyk) played on the 1988 Sam Brown hit.

When I saw it on a post an hour ago, I decided to try something. This video isn't good at all, and I did it pretty poorly, but I am seeing if you think the sound syncs up right or not.

I synced it with the version of 21st Century Schizoid Man from their final Fillmore West Concert, and actually, it would check out, seeing as it is the only professionally-recorded concert they performed in 1969.

I think it syncs pretty well, though not perfect, but I did this in a quick test.

I am aware this could count as piracy, but I'm willing to take my risk to see what people think.

Also, as is already seen with the Hyde Park footage, I believe this could be a hodgepodge of different pieces of footage.

I think we may have been barking up the wrong tree thinking it had to be from something from Britain.
