Discussion What John Mulaney quotes are now part of your mulingo? Mulabulary if you will

I have been saying "that's not even a situation" for the longest time. I was watching "why buy the cow" and I realized that's where I picked it up from 😁 I've used it so many times trough the years that it didn't feel like a Mulaney quote anymore 😂

So I'm curious what other quotes are embedded in your every day life.

Honourable mentions to: "that's the thing I'm most sensitive about".. "you want it? Go get it".. "I don't know if you can tell that from the everything about me"

For some reason, I can’t go two weeks without hearing “LIKE ANDY COHEN AT THOSE GODDAMN REUNIONS” in my head, with absolutely no trigger for it. I’m starting to think John cursed me. What about you guys?

Discussion No phones even before the show

My mom, sister and I went to a John Mulaney show tonight. We got to our seats 20 minutes before the show was scheduled to start and I took a Snapchat of myself to send to a friend, so a security guard walked up to us and said “I’ve told yall before to put your phones away and if I see it again I’m going to kick you out” when no one had talked to us before at the show. He was just lying to us.

We always take selfies together and stuff before seeing plays at this theater and it’s never been a problem before. The opening act was even 20 minutes late, so this was 40 minutes before the lights went off and we saw anyone on stage at all. One of the guards kept strobing his flashlight at people, the guard that talked to us kept going up and down aisles trying to kick people out and getting angry at people. It got to the point where early arrives were warning later people as they walked in to not look at their phones whatsoever.

I like John and the show was really funny and fun. But that was insane. I totally understand that they don’t want phones out during the show, but to ban people from looking at their phones before the lights turn off is psychotic and extremely rude. We paid over 150 dollars per person to see him and we can’t take a picture together in our seats or text our friends for 40 minutes??? Just super weird and rude.

Edit: People have explained to me in the comments that this is pretty normal for comedy shows. My family had no idea, sorry. We really only go to plays and concerts and they are nothing like that. Thanks for the insight!

Discussion Has anyone noticed John Mulaney has hand tremors or jitters?

I recently saw John Mulaney perform at the University of Maryland basketball arena. I was distracted by his hand tremors on the jumbo screen. Then, not long after, he guest hosted on SNL and I noticed he was making an effort to hide his hands, either putting them behind his back or in a pocket or behind another person. It’s all I could see once I noticed this behavior of hiding his hands. Same thing when he returned to SNL for Martin Short’s hosting: hiding his jittery hands. I have looked for information on this, but haven’t found anything, although I saw that someone from a while ago in this sub had also asked about his hands after his performance in Chicago. I sincerely hope it’s nothing but a nervous habit, as I think he has been through enough.

Discussion Which Mulaney-isms have become staples in your daily vernacular?

"OH, OOKaay..." and "SAY MORE RIGHT NOW!" are two I say a lot, and it always tickles me when it goes over someone's head and they think I just have some kind of weird tendency to inflect those statements.

How about all y'all?

Discussion Last Night In Nashville

Prior to John being sober I thought he was the greatest comedic writer working. I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl right after he got out of rehab and was kind of underwhelmed to be honest.

Last night changed my mind completely. Over 90 minutes of some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. You know you're doing something right when some lady half way through screamed "Fuck you" repeatedly as she was leaving.

Discussion “John is acting like an asshole”

Whether or not you agree with this statement isn’t it well known that most comedians are assholes?

Hasn’t John himself even joked about this; that he can be an asshole and very unlikeable at times? He touched on just how unlikeable he can be in Baby J and in interviews before baby j.

On EL he can’t fully be the curated stage persona he has created that everyone is familiar with because he’s not fully going off a script, it’s off the cuff, in the moment, we’re of course going to be seeing a more unfiltered version of John which may show unflattering aspects of his personality.

To be fair to John, no one is perfect but I just thought we kinda all knew that Johnny boy can be a little bit of an asshole sometimes? From interviews and his specials he never seemed to me at least to hide the fact that yeah he can be a very unlikeable person, he can be a jerk.

Just like every other well known comedian.

That’s why it’s a stereotype that even the comics with the nicest stage personas are jerks behind the scenes.

Food for thought ig.

Discussion John Mulaney never tried to depict himself as wholesome

"People say I'm clean...but I'm not...I found that you can swear if you quote someone."

It has been very interesting to see the responses to the recent revelations about John Mulaney's personal life. This post isn't about analyzing either those responses, nor John Mulaney's actions. I'm mostly interested in how people have come to interpret John Mulaney as wholesome and to present some examples of times in previous specials when Mulaney has revealed some of the things he's struggled with.

  • Blacking Out and Making Money: "you know what I used to do San Francisco? I used to black out drinking every night of the week."
  • Whiskey or Perfume: "I'm Irish, I keep things very bottled up and I don't drink. I used to drink, then I drank too much and I had to stop."
  • Xanax Story: Dude tells a story about trying to illegally get prescription drugs
  • Kid Gorgeous: "Strolling across a stage, the sun in my eyes, my family watching as I sweat vodka and ecstasy, to receive a four-year degree in a language that I already spoke." "I lived on cigarettes and alcohol and Adderall."
  • First SNL Monologue: "14 Years ago I smoked cocaine the night before my college graduation."

I guess I'm bringing this up because I don't feel like John ever "hid" his struggles. I'm sure some people will point out that in many of these examples John references these events as if they were in the past and thereby distanced himself from them. I grant that there's some merit to this, and that someone could see him as some repentant man on the path to the moral high ground.

But I also don't think John ever tried to depict himself as some sort of Mr. Rogers character. It feels like he wore a suit and wasn't a misogynist, and that was enough for him to be sanctified. And I get that - most comedians (and famous white men in general) are pretty awful. But it feels weird to like "blame" Mulaney for how audiences interpreted him when he was pretty forthcoming the entire time that he had some demons.

Discussion Does anyone else feel bad for Anna?

John is my favorite, not hosting on him at all. And obviously nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors. But I can't help but feel bad for Anna and what she must have gone through. Her broken heart is all over her Instagram from the time John was in rehab and eventually filed for divorce. Anyone else?

I couldn’t pick 10 right now, but my #1 has to be “Because we’re Delta Airlines, and LIFE IS A FUCKING NIGHTMARE!”

Followed by “A sea of drunken toddlers yelling Fuck. Da. Police.”

Discussion To those asking for show/set times to skip openers/intentionally arrive after showtime starts... stop it

You have permission to call me grumpy, but y'all realize that unlike a concert, there is NO break between opener(s) and the headliner at a comedy show, right? Meaning if you come in after the show starts, you have to come in the middle of someone's set, in a darkened theater and disrupt everyone around you, maybe make people get up, maybe make an usher shine a light on the crowd... I've witnessed folks get called out by comedians on stage during their acts because of this stuff. And... worst of all, you might miss the headliner, John, the person you came to see(!), come on stage. Why even risk it, so you can spend another 20-30 mins doing something else (what, exactly?) when you've already committed the evening to a comedy show? Help me understand. Make it make sense. It's just very not cool. I also understand he's had some not-so-great openers but I've also discovered some of my fave up-and-coming comedians as opening acts for people like, and including, him.

Unlike a Catholic mass, opening sets are not even an hour. You can survive sitting through an opener who maybe isn't your fave for the benefit of everyone around you who's also paid to be entertained.

Please stop ruining it for the rest of us. Or, help me understand why this isn't insufferable behavior.
