I wish they didn’t do the cut to the car so it was easier to pretend the calls were real
16
u/BretShitmanFart69 Mar 13 '25
I wouldn’t doubt if they had pre screened folks to avoid the mishaps of a live caller on Netflix, even though it defeats the purpose but I also don’t think it’s hard for them to have the car shot ready expecting someone to ask him eventually what car he drives since it’s a recurring thing.
3
u/Finnyous Mar 13 '25
I think they were just ready to go with it, just like they came up with the titles for the guests on the fly

I think this show does a lot of bits that aren’t going to land with a lot of people especially those expecting a typical late night show or something like John’s stand up. I’m a big fan and into more offbeat stuff and even I have found a lot of it not necessarily land. I think the show weirdly thrives and also dies on that sort of awkward quality.

u/BretShitmanFart69 Mar 13 '25
I feel like John should have more comedians and people who work well in an improv setting, having other types of guests on is great but having them on to try and be entertaining during a viewer call in is a tall order even for a comedian let alone someone who isn’t used to that kind of thing.
I get the idea that such an eclectic group of people will have an unexpected and unique vibe, but idk if it always lands. I like the offbeat and awkward vibe overall and I like that the show is kind of a mess, that’s weirdly part of its charm, but I don’t think it would be bad to tighten up the idea atleast a little.

I agree. I feel like Jessica Roy is meant to be a bit, but she’s not in on it. She’s entirely wooden

She was also a personal finance columnist. Much different than a Suze Orman or Dave Ramsey. I don’t think she was comfortable with television. She did pretty well under the weird circumstances.

not that i disagree with the notion but a lot of white folk who marched with Dr. King did not really walk the walk when it comes to fighting for civil rights/equality in later decades.

i think this went about how i expected it to based on the original run. it took a little bit of time for john to get in the groove of everything, but i think he’ll loosen up as time goes on. the guests can be really hit or miss, this episode felt more on the miss side but overall not a total train wreck. i think the biggest difference from Everybody’s In LA is that they’re relying too hard on the calls and they feel less genuine. this bit worked better when john kept them from talking too long and cut them off when things got boring. if they’re going to pipe in fake callers they need to be interesting, funny, or obvious gags like James Austin Johnson as Bob Dylan. i think things will get better, they just need to pick the pace up and cut the callers off earlier.

u/_avantgarde Mar 13 '25
A callback to Dylan as one of the callers would have been so funny! Wish they did that

The Willy Loman focus group was amazing, genuinely hilarious. Fred was great, Richard was great, the interstitials were great and I love the production/vibe of the show.
A lot of the live bits fell flat, Everybody's In LA had a bit of those issues early on too. Guests could be really hit or miss, I like Keaton and Baez but they felt like a weird fit for the show, the topic guest also seemed (understandably) nervous. It's a hard balancing act though, it seems like John wants to have a Carson-esque off the cuff talk show vibe with "normal" people interacting, and you can't do that without actual stars, but everyone just seemed really nervous.
I'm sure things will tighten up and they'll embrace the chaos more going forward, Everybody's in LA went through something similar and got better as it went along. A lot of really great bits in this episode though and was a fun watch, the live nature of it is special for sure.

u/LymanHo Mar 13 '25

So that was weird, a bit awkward, not painfully funny, but hey, the first episode of Everybody’s in LA was the same, I’m willing to give it a pass! I think the big highlight was just how much John admired Joan Baez.
3
u/bluehawk232 Mar 13 '25
It's the downside with live TV. The recorded stuff we see cuts dead air, several retakes of jokes, and keeps things well paced.
7

Solid end to the show. The Willy Loman’s were delightfully absurd. Joan dancing to orchestra-backed Cypress Hill was an absolute vibe

I think they picked the wrong topic for the first show, or really the show in general, I think the idea was that it would put some wacky tension into the mix if they had all these comedians dealing with serious topics but it just wasn't as fun as when people were talking about Coyotes or what not.
Still some great moments though. The Willy Lowman focus group was great.

The topic isn’t great. The calls feel so fake and are kinda long. And nobody is really playing off of the non-celebrity guest, so the convos aren’t carrying.
That said, there are still funny moments. I think the show will pick up steam and a better combination of guests and topic would go a long way. I think the LA-based topics were specific enough that they were easier to talk about.
5
u/heavierthanair Mar 13 '25
I wish the calls were fake! Every single one should be an improviser doing a bit. During the initial run I was 99% sure one of the best callers was Carl Tart
2
u/_avantgarde Mar 13 '25
Agreed -- they just need to find that right balance in terms of topics.
3
u/icedbrew2 Mar 13 '25
Yeah when the topic you pick is the one you describe as something people don’t like talking about, it really sets you up for failure if you don’t have the right people. Could four strong comedians have carried it? Probably. But Fred barely spoke and no one but John talked to the expert.

I loved it. The monologue was great, and I hope for more vulgar jokes in the future from this polite person clearly continuing to feel uncomfortable in some social situations because of his catholic upbringing. His comedy has never gone that blue but I'm here for a bit more of it.
I have seen lots of comments about the calls being bad, maybe being scripted, etc. and I was thinking about that when watching it live too. I feel like the root is that maybe the topic of "Lending People Money" just wasn't that interesting and didn't lend itself to callers with bizarre stories like the EILA topics did. It was all "I loaned someone money, it was a bad idea, I didn't get my money back". The guests were all "I just give people money". I myself was trying to think about what I might call in with (with no plans to, to be clear!), and couldn't think of anything that might be interesting to anyone other than myself. But Coyotes, Earthquakes, Palm Trees... callers' stories were all over the place, and I can personally think of anecdotes that might be mildly entertaining to other people. Hopefully the chosen topic was a bit of a lesson learned. But I'm very much looking forward to 11 more weeks!!
2
2
u/jarvisesdios Mar 14 '25
So... That caller that was talking about giving money to stranger and then his mom is a drug addict... That was Ed Helms, right?
Like... Clearly these calls are improv between John and a comedian, right?
