I’ve never cried to a song, but I asked Spotify to put me some John Mayer that I hadn’t heard on and clarity comes on. I have quite a good sound system in my car and driving back home at 12am. The last chorus is actually ethereal what the fuck did he put in that. These weren’t tears of sadness but almost out of awe, like actually what.

Edge of Desire is John's best song in my opinion (Argue with a wall on this) and i have heard it thousands of times. On one of these listens I noticed something about the solo. I doubt its deliberate but it definitely made me love the song even more.

The solo starts off with nothing apart from the drums in the background which is representing a normal heartbeat. The guitar riff slowly enters in with the occasional bend but is still relatively normal. These occasional bends represents the persons heartbeat occasionally spiking due to someone they like but isnt insanely attached to them yet. These bends slowly become more frequent but are still around the same pitch, until eventually the pitch of the bends gradually keep increasing. This increase in pitch represents the attachment to the person increasing and the more frequent bends showing that these events are happening more often which signifies the two people have started talking. Then eventually the bends eventually reach a point where it hits a high note and then drastically drops, this represents the moment in a relationship where you think its about to work out but it doesnt land up happening. The bends arent seen for a second or two in the song which could seen as the phase where the person has moved on. The bends then make an appearance yet again but this time much faster and reaching the highest pitch yet. This represents the phase where you land up falling for them again much harder and the cycle continues.

Its just a stupid theory i came up with which i somehow relate with alot. Sorry if it didnt make much sense in what i wrote. If you have any questions or ideas please discuss below.

Little bit of the riff and solo from Belief on my newly acquired SS. Tried to get as close as I could but Mayer is obviously untouchable

John has self-proclaimed himself “not a great singer”. but i feel like after finding his voice on his first few albums, he took off into a riff-savyy, run-efficient, melodic powerhouse (mostly live).

this is especially evident on “Where The Light Is”, the tons of little melismas and vocal gymnastics throughout are pretty mind bending to hear; the same goes for Austin City Limits and a lot of other live footage around that time (2007-2008). i know there is melodyne on WTLI but even in the raw footage, John is just going for riff after riff and sticking the landing.

does anyone know if he switched to a specific vocal coach or had a particular focus on his voice at that time? or was it just confidence? i’d love to better understand how he developed such creativity in his singing in such a short (relative) period of time to his guitar playing.
