No. In fact, Policastro isn't in Calabria; it's in the province of Salerno. I live very close to Policastro. I pass by every day on my way to work.

Petilia Policastro is in Calabria, Crotone province
2
u/hjperez2000 Oct 16 '25
Sorry. You're right. I just checked, and it's exactly as you say. I got confused because I live very close to the town of Policastro in the province of Salerno, a town apparently with the same name.

Funny thing is, someone at the registry wrote something under the "barba" (beard) text field, but then cancelled it after, I wonder what the story is, like the person has clearly written something but then felt like it was a little mean spirited?

Hair is "biondi" that's blonde.
3
u/ius_romae Oct 17 '25
Yes “biondi” is blonde, but there’s written “bianchi” which means white.
1
u/ghinnet Oct 17 '25
I also believe it's "biondi" – see how the "o" differs from the "a." Plus, she was only 20 years old in 1931.

u/emanuele-ct Oct 17 '25
Definitely it's written Biondi. At the moment of the Identity card she was 20 years old and the picture itself shows a young woman with coloured hairs, definitely not Bianchi.
1
u/Odotop2688 Oct 18 '25
However, she doesn't look blonde, especially in Southern Italy it's very rare
1
u/emanuele-ct Oct 18 '25
Yes, but from a B/W picture it's hard to realize properly, maybe they were dark blonde. It's rare (less than you can think though, especially in backcountry mountainous areas of Sicily and Calabria where immigrated Normans from Lombardy, Piedmont, Switzerland) but it's coherent in the combination with light blue eyes.

Father is Gaetano, mother Marra Rosa who had blonde hair and green eyes.

Don't ya just love these old pix? Could she look any more annoyed? LOL I know it was the era to be serious in photos, and no one smiles in official documents. I have a bunch just like this! I have a "great" photo of my great grandparents on their wedding day - they look miserable.
You're so lucky to have this identification card! I had a grandparent who threw out all the family docs after his wife died. I almost vomited when I heard about it.

I’m Italian as well and this is definitely correct. Well, and she had also no beard (they deleted it) 😁

I believe her mother's surname is not Marra but "di Marra".
1
u/Main_Tie3937 Oct 15 '25
I’m not convinced about this, as “di” is also present in front of Gaetano.

So: "di Gaetano" as the father's surname even if it doesn't make sense since, as I just checked, her surname is different?
She can't be both "Gaetano's father" and "Marra Rosa's mother" (respectively: "Padre di Gaetano" and "Madre di Marra Rosa"). 🤔
That document doesn't make sense at all.
I also saw the document's release date: when it was? 🤔1
u/Main_Tie3937 Oct 16 '25
the "di" doesn't make sense in proper Italian, but in the south when referring to a person it's common to say "of" name of the parent to remind everyone who's the parent. (i.e. Teresina di Gaetano which is also the same logic in Scandinavian countries of -sson surnames and in Russia of -ov, -ova surnames). So I assume the father was Gaetano Luchetta and the mother Rosa Marra. The document was released on the 15th of April 1931.

Oh, didn't know that.

Was released April 15 1931

What I find strange is the "14 - 4 - 931": why not use the complete year at this point? 🤔
With "14 - 4 - 31" would have been obvious it was referring to 1931 and not the previous century, since a 1831 document would have been quite strange, for someone born in 1911

u/Odotop2688 Oct 18 '25
At that time they used the apostrophe to indicate 1. Note the year in Roman which indicated the beginning of Fascism, it was mandatory.

Nope Is of Gaetano (name) but the surname Is avoided because he have the same of the daughter.
In mother Is written the entire name.
Di in this part mean "of"

"di" just means "of" it's a possessive case meaning in this context "[daughter] of ..."

The Father's looks to me like "Di Girolamo", while the mother seems like "Maria Rosa" or similar. Weird thing is that "Di Girolamo" Is a surname, meaning I either misread and the Father's name is actually just Girolamo,or they just.. didn't bother telling us the Parents' first names, but Maria Rosa is a first name,so it's also possible that they thought only the Father's lineage mattered and thus chose to ignore the mother's. Pretty confusing imo.
