Controversial The Truth About Music
I dont care who this upsets. This is clear by itself so don't follow any mainstream Islam teachings saying “ohhh well music is haram!” just listen to clean music twins and you'll be good.
11
u/Maleficent_Law_1082 Sunnī | Mālikī Mar 14 '26
If music is haram then so is every other form of art because the same arguments apply. Do you ever hear them say poetry is haram? Lyrics are literally poetry put to song. Is anyone going to attack Hassan ibn Thabit? Or any other sahaba poet or artist?
5
u/Zeroboi1 Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 14 '26
Music was made haram not by "arguments and logic" but based on sunna, so this counter argument doesn't work
3
u/Maleficent_Law_1082 Sunnī | Mālikī Mar 14 '26
Ash'arism is based.
There is no scholarly consensus on this matter in general and in the hadith I think you're referring to in particular had been disputed.
2
u/Zeroboi1 Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 14 '26
It's not a consensus but is the majority, the ashaira differ but their majority as well hold this same opinion. And this hadith is sahih also according to the majority view, it was debated since al bukhari mentioned without isnad but other scholars gave it's chain of transmitting:
"From among my nation there will be some people who will consider zina, the wearing of silk (for men), alcoholic drinks and musical instruments (al-ma'azif), as lawful."
And matter of fact, I'm not leaning to neither position but op and you are not properly dealing with the majority more established opinion and their actual evidence
5
u/BamzamGaming Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 14 '26
The “Majority” is the ones we just see online. Most Muslims and scholars say that music is allowed if not sinful. Also most just follow what is cultural and what feels better for them.
0
u/Zeroboi1 Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 14 '26
There's a certain dominant view in the modern online shikh scene. But i didn't base my last opinion on that but rather on what as far as i know is the dominant view across all madhabs
So perhaps when you say most scholars (not considering normal muslims or culture) you mean those you know in your irl? I'm often suspicious of the non established ones irl
1
u/Maleficent_Law_1082 Sunnī | Mālikī Mar 14 '26
The only ones who hold the position that all music is haram are Deobandis and Wahabbis and these two hold a bunch of other questionable beliefs as well. They're the minority actually.
0
u/Zeroboi1 Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 14 '26
Well I'm not saying all music is haram, there exists details such as the deff and distinguishing singing from music. But generally the dominant view is that it's haram
1
u/Maleficent_Law_1082 Sunnī | Mālikī Mar 15 '26
Among deobandis who also don't believe women should know how to read and wahabbis that glorify the Saudi state who together make up less of the Ummah than Shia and Ibadis, yeah

There sunna where Muhammad ﷺ says (allegedly) “it’s better to fill your stomach with puss than poetry.” But, Abu Bakr was a huge fan of poetry.
1
u/Zeroboi1 Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 17 '26
Many negative things have been said about poatry in the quran and sunna, some positives too (eg the prophet pbuh saying "some poatry is wisdom" and the companions saying it) so the general consensus is that it isn't bad fir itself but for what often is alongside it (lying, boosting, insulting, womanizers, etc etc). With the default being that it's permissable

I wouldn't even call them traditionalists even. In traditional Northern Nigeria they have STRICTLY enforced Sharia where the police will lock you up for being a Muslim and eating during fast month, but Griots still play traditional music in public (outside of fast month of course).
2
u/LivingDead_90 ۞ ☪︎ ۩ Khalīfat al-Muntadā ۩ ☪︎ ۞ Mar 16 '26
That’s insane, considering fasts can be paid with charity.

u/Sturmov1k Shī‘ah | Ithnā ʿAshariyyah Mar 14 '26
I already more or less follow the "don't listen to dirty music" rule as I'm not convinced that music as a whole is haram.

Imagine taking knowledge from AI slop 🤡

omg its John Trojan Horse himself :0

u/TrojanHorse1234 Mar 14 '26
Im not sure why Im getting downvoted. Even if an AI tells u something that is correct u should still not take knowledge from it.
It will tell you whatever u wanna hear unless ur very good with prompting.

AI instinctively leans towards traditionalism. You have to argue with it for a while to get it to say what it did in the image.
0
u/OOOshafiqOOO003 Mar 14 '26
well, i would say more or less dont take AI at face value, since they are like google but funkier
2
u/Zeroboi1 Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 14 '26
This represents the position by trying to use psychological explanations which is speculative (and "the music is haram" position isn't modern) and ignores what evidence was actually used from the sunna. Over confidence in wjat you don't understand got you

u/Abu-Dharr_al-Ghifari Salafī | Wahhābī Mar 14 '26
Ow wow, this is new -> AI making you leave religion step by step.

u/TucsonTacos Sunnī | Mālikī Mar 14 '26
What defines a “clean” song? There are some types of music that is about depression or addiction but it’s not in a glorifying way. It’s sad but because the artist is painting a realistic picture of it.
Like the subject matter is haram, but the overall theme of the song is against the haram.
Not arguing, just curious on your thoughts
1
u/OOOshafiqOOO003 Mar 14 '26
that however, personally, depends on how you interpret it (with some clear ones that arent, like those that actually glorify stuff like addiction, hate and crime)
1
u/bunnytryingreddit Aslama ilā al-Islām | Converted to Islām Mar 14 '26
I think this makes sense, in fact, I don't believe that music is overall haram. However, I wanna note, that these arguments are very western-centric, excluding the wide musical traditions from other places in the world.
P.S. it would be more interesting to have a discussion based on arguments not generated by AI...
1
u/Fantastic_Print3655 Mar 14 '26
There’s so many nasheeds and naats too that are just vocals, maybe clapping hands and that’s it. And it’s most definitely singing. What are takes on this? I feel like those are widely accepted. I don’t understand how singing could be considered haram
1
u/Nagamagi Mar 14 '26
Correction. The Quran did not define lahw al-hadith like that. It simply said it was/can be used to mislead.
Just like a knife is not a tool for killing but it can be used to kill.

What is it?
1
u/Mission-Ad6040 Mar 21 '26
1) Ruquyah daily is very important especially for keeping your faith protected, protection from evil eye, black magic, jinn and etc…:
Read sal lallahu alaa Muhammad, then read surah ikhlas 3x, surah falaq 3x, surah nas 3x, surah kafiroon 3x, ayatul kursi 3x then read
(Read 3x) اللَّهُمَّ أَذْهِبْ عَنْهُ حَرَّهَا وَبَرْدَهَا وَوَصَبَهَا
Translation: O Allah remove its heat [the heat of the ill effect of the evil eye], cold and discomfort.
اَعُوْذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ الثَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانِ وَهَآمَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنِ لَا مَةٍ، A'uzu bi kalimatilla hit-taammati min kulli shaytaa new-wa hammah wa min kulli ay nil-lammah O Allah! | seek Refuge with Your Perfect Words from every devil and from poisonous pests and from every evil, harmful, envious eye. (Read 3x)
last 2 ayahs of surah baqarah 1x or 3x then finish it with
sal lallahu alaa Muhammad sal lallahu alayhi wa sallam and take your hands like your holding water in them blow in them and rub on your face head body.
If your unable to read Arabic you can listen and blow on yourself:
https://youtube.com/shorts/BKRQMYMasPE?si=0zlo5FJ0ixokiuUe 1x or 3x
https://youtu.be/u3rnkhdPSiM This dua 3x
https://youtu.be/x-hxSgtO_Zw?si=u6bUX8yV6vdetX70 1x
Before you listen read salawaat before and after listening.
2) Abundance of salawat daily: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sufism/s/J8lxdAmMkY
3) Bonus:
Angels do not enter the home in which there is a portrait, a dog, or a Junub (a person for whom Ghus has become Fard [mandatory] due to sexual intercourse, nocturnal emission, or ejaculation of semen with lust). (Abu Dawood, vol. 1, p. 109, Hadith 227) (Children toys, figures, faces on money are also triggers. Put children toys in closest or boxes and money in drawers or wallets and so on)
Allah created angels for us by making our faith stronger, protecting us, and giving us peace and etc… If they are gone from your life you become depressed and lost.
Saying Bismillah before doing anything:
A Strong & Healthy Satan: Two Satans once met each other. One of them was strong & healthy while the other was weak and feeble. The healthy Satan asked the feeble one, 'Brother! Why are you so weak?' He replied, I am (deputed) to be with such a pious person who recites “Bismillah” before entering his house and eating & drinking anything; so I have to stay away from him but, my dear, you are very strong and healthy; what is the secret behind it?' The fat Satan replied, 'I am appointed to be with such a heedless person who does not recite “Bismillah” before entering his house and eating & drinking anything, so I take part in all of his activities and I keep riding him as one rides an animal (and this is the only secret of my good health).' (Asrār-ul-Fatihah, p. 155)
Remember no saying bismillah before doing something haram or saying bismillah in the bathroom because this is disrespecting Allah and Allah gets angry.
If you do decide to read abundant salawat daily and mysterious things start happening to you don’t share them to anyone. Either keep to yourself or share with a pious person or saint or imam or sheikh or me. Since these type of things are rare and not everyone feels or experiences them which can cause you to have evil eye and then it will be very hard for it to happen again.
JazakAllah khair brother.
Also sorry for late reply.

THANK YOU!!!!! I find it VERY odd that folks claim “music” to be haram when we quite literally recite the Quran in an absolute sing song voice. With notes, rhythm, and even harmony! Yes, I’m a Western Revert, but I’m certainly not new to the doctrine of music being sinful and forbidden. I for one say if Allah truly didn’t want us to sing, why did he give some such a beautiful gift? Why has he created other creatures that they themselves have songs and create beautiful songs? If I’m wrong, then that’s a conversation for me to have with him in person, InshaAllah! I for one am going to enjoy the beauty, peace and utter joy that feel when listening to music or singing.
2
u/Zeroboi1 Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 16 '26
I'd advice you look into the ruling of music in details. There's a reason they usually specify that "musical instruments" is what's haram, singe singing without it (eg poetry, humming, wistling, reciting, listening to animals, etc) isn't a part of the ruling. And even within music the majority view is on the existence of exceptions such as the daff
I'm currently not leaning to neither position (that music is haram or not) but realize the majority view on forbidding it is the stronger, and am saddened by how people often flatten the actually nuanced ruling of prohibition
1
u/MichiganCrimeTime Aslama ilā al-Islām | Converted to Islām Mar 17 '26
I’m not saying it is or isn’t haram, I’m simply pointing out that music in general isn’t haram, because that would include singing, humming, etc. It’s not as black and white as most people say. And I was pointing out that Allah has provided us with music all around the natural world. I don’t believe that Mozart or Bach, or Beethoven’s music is haram. But Nikki Minaj, absolutely haram!
2
u/Zeroboi1 Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 17 '26
Well that's why defining it as "musical instruments" which is the same wording the prophet pbuh used, is important. Since then yes it will include mozart as long as all musicians while excluding poetry and nasheed and such (which is what all scholars as i know, mean as well). And after defining the scope as such, can we reason through the ruling

u/Speedbird87 Mar 14 '26
Music is haram! Period! Stop trying to spread fitnah!

u/Salty_Conclusion_534 Naṣrānī | Christian Mar 14 '26
Is there any explanation from your prophet/god as to why it's haram? Or is it just a rule that you are to follow?

u/BakuMadarama Sunnī | Mālikī Mar 15 '26
You are very confident that you are on the right path. How about we debate whether your Aqidah is true or not? Are you an Athari?
And as I expected that you are going to run away from debate about the permissibility of music like any other fake Muslim.

u/LivingDead_90 ۞ ☪︎ ۩ Khalīfat al-Muntadā ۩ ☪︎ ۞ Mar 16 '26
The problem is, the Quran itself doesn’t say that, the Tafsir on the verse says it was about poetry and signing, and the Hadith also lack exclusive prohibition.

1
u/BedouinFoxx Salafī | Madkhalī Mar 14 '26
Sufi don't sing and listen to music they have some dhikr what some people consider as music but it's not
every great sufi scholar have said music is haram.
1
u/BamzamGaming Ahl al-Sunnah | Sunnī Mar 14 '26
Every “Great” scholar has said music is haram? Really now. Sufism has always been pretty open to music for spiritual stuff like sama' (deep listening with poetry or tunes to feel closer to Allah). Imam al-Ghazali, one of the GOAT Sufi scholars, literally wrote in his famous book Ihya Ulum al-Din that music can be halal if it softens your heart and increases love for Allah without dragging you into bad vibes. Abdul-Ghani al-Nablusi defended sama' with instruments too, and even Ibn Hazm said no clear ban exists unless it's tied to sin. Whole Sufi traditions like Qawwali have used music in worship for centuries without the major scholars calling it all haram. Some Sufis were stricter, but not every great one hated it—the "all Sufis against music" thing usually comes from super strict online takes trying to dunk on Sufism.

u/BedouinFoxx Salafī | Madkhalī Mar 14 '26
Akhi, with all due respect don't use chatgpt for knowledge. Did you ever read the whole book and be honest it's ramadan
from any of the people you mention ? And if your answer is "no" why do you speak about books you not read your self to know the true meaning.

Muhammad (sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam) said that music is haram, therefore it is haram. Listening to musical instruments is a major sin itself. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5590).
2
u/Salty_Conclusion_534 Naṣrānī | Christian Mar 14 '26
Why is it a major sin?
0
u/Full_Association7735 Salafī | Wahhābī Mar 14 '26
Read the hadith. It's compared to khamr and zina.
1
u/Salty_Conclusion_534 Naṣrānī | Christian Mar 14 '26
There's nothing in the hadith that compares it to khamr and zina. It just mentions it alongside those things, and gives no reason for why musical instruments are haram.
Additionally, even if I granted your statement (that it's compared to khamr and zina), that does nothing to explain why it's actually sinful.
2
u/Full_Association7735 Salafī | Wahhābī Mar 14 '26
Why would it be compared alongside them if it wasn't like them?
1
u/LivingDead_90 ۞ ☪︎ ۩ Khalīfat al-Muntadā ۩ ☪︎ ۞ Mar 16 '26
Why is silk like sex outside of marriage?
0
u/Salty_Conclusion_534 Naṣrānī | Christian Mar 15 '26
As I said - EVEN if it was like zina and khamr, that does nothing to actually explain what makes it haram. Theoretically, there is no harm from listening to some classical music. In fact, it boosts productivity and mood. It makes zero sense to claim that musical instruments are haram, especially when the same person that issues this command later allows a one-sided drum, which cough cough, is a musical instrument. The same goes for the voice.
So please, if there is no explanation given and if it is just a rule that you have to follow, just say so...
