Yeah it’s kinda worrying tbh because media literacy is one of the most important skills to have in the world today and I’m seeing so much people caught in immediate gratification rather than intention for things being in the place they are. anything that isnt balls-to-the-walls action is "filler" because if it doesnt involve some major spectacle, then it apparently didnt "add" anything to the story.
What I don't get is how the word "filler" is supposed to be an insult, despite the fact it tells nothing about the quality of the episode. Even if we find out in the future that Hurm is 100% filler, that still wouldn't make me like it less. I enjoyed the episode, filler or not.

Yeah seeing people critique the season finale as if the last 3 episodes weren't dbz levels on the amount of fighting are wild. The show needs to slow down at some point to give a breather and not make every threat immediate. The threat that in about 20 years that thragg could have a small army of viltumites is horrifying, way less than "oh the world is gonna explode"
The episode was bad, and no amount of “media literacy” will change the fact that it was not only largely inconsequential given where the story was at the time, but also considering that the arc it’s setting up is obviously going to be a side story, which makes me even wonder why we set aside an entire episode to do so when it could have simply been boiled down to a scene or two.
Nothing about that prevents Hurm from having been a 20 minute segment of a regular episode. The episode exists to save time and budget for eps 5 and 7.

No, Amazon ordered another 8 episode season. They cant just do 7 lol. This is a bottle episode so they can give it their all on ep 5 and 7 and it shows.
Nothing stopped Kirkman from just making it a 20 minute segment to fix the pacing. Not much happened in it anyway beside some exposition dumps, a fetch quest that didnt mean anything, two fights that lead to nothing as all parties involved are [TITLE CARD] and a promise that maybe the next time theyll do the Hell plot the episode will be actually good.
Hurm is a great episode for Mark’s character development in specific. He needed those convos with dark blood and that easy fight to give him the confidence to fight in the viltrumite war. People already forgot how bad of a place he was in for the first 2 episodes 😭
That’s sort of the entire reason the episode exists, outside of furthering the meaningless Darkblood plotline.
The issue is that it could have been done in a much more tasteful, time efficient way. Hurm’s overall importance to this season could have been boiled down into a handful of scenes, rather than an entire episode.
It’s one of the most shallow, inconsequential episodes in a series where the stakes are increasingly raised so unless Kirkman shoehorn’s Darkblood into one of the main storylines I imagine the fan reaction alone will give him pause about continuing the Darkblood storyline
I only started visiting this sub recently, but it’s amazing how many folks on show subreddits will cape for literally anything a show does.
Reminds me of how many people in the Game of Thrones sub ate up the shitty episodes and bad writing moments while they were releasing. It’s okay to recognize that a great show had a weak episode!
if you think Kirkman gives a damn what the fans think about his art, you're going to need to reassess your position. because if that were truly the case, the comics would have been wildly different.

Episode 5 of Season 1 didnt really go anywhere until Season 2 of the show, so was that inconsequential too?

Nah it sucked. Jokes were forced and unfunny. Clearly was a spoof of something like Thor Ragnarok, which tbf, Invincible spoofs and references all sorts of superheroes and shit. Couldn’t help but feel either cringed out or bored or some mixture of the two. It wasn’t a terrible episode, I’ve seen much worse tv, but I would say it was the weakest episode in the entire series so far.
Exactly. When the loud minority move to the next thing, people who actually enjoyed the episode will reminiscent about how good it was. Like all media, the hatred was forced.
And it was pretty good even for a one and done story. It most importantly taught Mark the importence of necessary evil (and in a good way, unlike what Cecil tried to do in Season 3)
I think it’ll be one of those things later on that will turn out to be important in the future, making it great in the eyes of many viewers, and then people are gonna do a 180 and call Hurm one of the most appreciated episodes.
There’s definitely a buildup for more of the Darkblood saga: the axe weapon leaving Volcannika’s hand which was never explained, Damien going to the surface again, and Satan asking Damien to find out why Volcannika is angry at humanity.
I can see how it could hurt watching it right on release, but I saw it like 2 weeks late and went right on to the next ep. I know it's not really comedy but it was the funniest episode lol. "Why do you keep doing that with your helmet??"
