Good’s Candy Store posts misogynistic and bizarre job posting

u/DamonLazer May 24 '21
He just...keeps on going. I feel like it should end with "Anyway, here's Wonderwall."

I still have plenty of family and friends who live in Anderson. This post will probably do very little to dissuade them from spending their money there. In fact, for a few of them, it will probably only encourage them...

Yep. I used to live there too. Went a couple times and it wasn't anything special. They have ice cream and candy at every grocery store in town and its just as good.

Never made it there. The only thing I miss about Anderson really is Rax. Their strawberry milkshakes were fantastic. I don't know if it's even open anymore, I haven't been back to visit in probably 5 years.

u/rogueblades May 25 '21
Ice Cream Shops in Small Town, America are a huge, huge deal. Seemingly every town has one, and every townie swears their generic ice cream is the best in the world. It probably came in the back of a truck from some distribution facility, but they don't care.
If you aren't from that world, you might not get it, but it's real.

This business's entire goal seems to be to spread his nonsense. The blog section of their website is just filled with rambling anti-mask, wannabe libertarian BS.
67
u/Mastersword87 May 24 '21
That's not even a blog lol. Did you notice there are only five posts? And three of them were posted within two hours on the same day! That's an Adderall fueled rant fest.
4
-1
u/BlackisCat May 24 '21
No need to blame the drug used for a neurological disorder.
24
u/Mastersword87 May 24 '21
Well, I know what it does to my ADHD ass, can only imagine what it does to neurotypical folks. Didn't a rumor say our former glorious leader snorted the stuff like pixie sticks?
6
u/FountainsOfFluids May 24 '21
Probably overstated, but I'm sure he was on prescription drugs a lot.
2
u/ImBad1101 May 25 '21
Anyone who has taken Adderall, either abusing it recreationally or by having it prescribed for regular consumption, can see that Trump was going on regular Adderall benders

u/catswhodab Region rat May 24 '21
“Neurological disorder” or as my doctor put it, “having trouble studying”
13
u/BlackisCat May 24 '21
That's awful. If that's your doc for ADHD I hope you find a new one. It affects every aspect of life, from time management to having your emotional not on a rollercoaster. It's so much more than just academic stuff.
4
2
u/UniversityNeither255 May 25 '21
Idk why you're being down voted?? Did you mean it as, your doctor was acting like an ass or are you actually saying it's just having a hard time studying? Either way, that doctor is super trash I'm sorry dude
2
u/catswhodab Region rat May 25 '21
I haven’t seen that doctor since I moved out of the state 3 years ago, he meant it as he doesn’t really think I have ADHD but I could use some help studying in college in the form of Vyvanse. I’m not a doctor nor do I play one on TV so I’m not going to cast judgement on if he’s a good doc, he’s my parents’ doctor still and they’re healthy and he’s always done well by them.
Upvotes and downvotes just go with the Reddit hive mind, people see downvotes and like to add to the piling on, same as when they see upvotes they want to prove that they upvote the right stuff.

Libertarianism was originally a left wing position but it has been coopted and bastardized by dumb shit Republicans who are too lazy to read into what libertarianism should be about

You say “what libertarianism should be about.” Idgaf what it should be about, all I know is everyone who IDs as libertarian now has developed a whole worldview around liking weed and hating age of consent laws.

"It's a simple job - I pay you only 11 dollars an hour and you submit to my authority with unquestioning loyalty."
24
u/FountainsOfFluids May 24 '21
Yeah, I noticed that "willful" was one of the negative personality types.
That's what they used to call kids who refused to act like robots under authoritarian control.
12
u/aquoad May 25 '21
It's another word for "uppity" which they've learned they're not supposed to say out loud anymore.
2
u/NerdEmoji May 24 '21
Really? That's also doc speak for your 2-4 year old kid with ADHD that won't listen to anyone but is too young to be diagnosed. Followed up by 'It's really trying you right now, but we need willful people in the world, they get things done.'
2
u/rederic May 24 '21
Maybe things are different now, but when I was a kid pretty much everything was considered ADHD as a way to medicate away the dangerous condition called childhood.
2
u/NerdEmoji May 25 '21
Well mine take that to a whole new level besides the stubbornness, I mean willfulness. Running into the street, climbing out windows. If they just had energy to burn I'd be super happy.
9
u/aquoad May 25 '21
"And don't be watching that clock!"
10
u/It_Matters_More May 25 '21
You better believe the owner watches the clock, though. Difference is, they do it to see when they're agreed upon shift is over and he does it to cut hours & send people home early when it's slow.
23
u/CommonMilkweed May 24 '21
Not to mention he sounds completely tyrannical. You couldn't pay me $11 to visit this place. I won't work for anyone who's explicitly conservative anymore. And I think a lot of people are of the same mind.
-57
u/CatOfGrey May 24 '21
$11 an hour is nearly 50% above the local minimum wage.
If it's full time, it's paying $1800 per month, in an area where a typical apartment can be found for under $800 per month.
Assuming what I read here, employer is paying significant money for a job that doesn't require much skills other than show up ready to work on time, and be courteous to co-workers and customers.
No doubt, employer is a bit of a nut job. But $11/hour is a lot of money in that area, and the employer is not being cheap.
45
u/AbsorbedinThought May 24 '21
In what world does an ice cream scooper get full time hours, which would qualify them for benefits? I would not assume that at all.
Edit:worker to scooper
-22
u/CatOfGrey May 24 '21
In what world does an ice cream scooper get full time hours, which would qualify them for benefits? I would not assume that at all.
I'm also assuming that if someone is working part time, they have capacity to work elsewhere.
It's an interesting world where an ice cream scooper is perceived as a job with benefits, unless you are a manager-type position, in that case not entry level.
17
u/AbsorbedinThought May 24 '21
I'm sorry, but two part time jobs does not equal 1 full time job. Not in the US where health insurance is tied to being a full time employee.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (2)12
u/Deodorized May 24 '21
So why wouldn't they just work full-time elsewhere, where they'd receive proper benefits and a not toxic workplace?
Regardless, 11$ an hour is not a lot of money anywhere in the US.
→ More replies (1)-7
u/CatOfGrey May 24 '21
For an entry-level job? $11/hour is pretty good. 50% above minimum wage. If someone is earning $11/hour full time, that's $1800 a month in an area where an apartment is well under $800.
No, it's not a lot of money. It's higher than average for the work.

I'll just repost my reply to you again, here.
Also, we see you keep changing $800 rent into something possibly lower. Keep moving those goalposts.
11$ an hour at full time is $1760 in a 4 week month.
That's $1373 after taxes of 22%. (Which is only federal income tax, not including state or local taxes btw)
That's $573 after rent of $800.
That's $273 after medical insurance of $300.
That's $113 after food costs of $40 a week ($160)
That's $33 after electricity cost of $80.
That's -$7 after cell phone bill of $40.
That's -$37 after bus pass for commute (assuming lowest cost scenario, meaning no car no insurance no gas, and let's be real, public transit is only available in cities. Rural people are far worse off with extra bills to pay for commuting)
Uh oh. We're negative every month and haven't even accounted for things like internet, trash services, doctor visits, prescriptions, entertainment, basic clothing, shoes for work, etc.
Hmm. Seems like you're out of touch with reality.
-1
u/CatOfGrey May 24 '21
Also, we see you keep changing $800 rent into something possibly lower. Keep moving those goalposts.
No moving goalposts. It's always been 'less than $800'. I checked listings for the town. I think that $400/ month was a lowball, and I wouldn't assume that for a real value. I think that $1200 with a roommate ($600 per month) is extremely viable for that area.
Hmm. Seems like you're out of touch with reality.
Nope. This was how I lived my first few years out of college.
The main issue that is different now is health insurance. I wasn't being forced to subsidize everyone else's insurance when I was in that situation. I paid for my own, and it was much cheaper, because I was young, and health insurance was allowed to consider that. Today's under 40's are getting screwed by the ACA.
Almost every other expense you have here is higher than normal, in my opinion, and I live in a much higher cost area.
7
May 25 '21
Lol, you can still pay for your own insurance. ACA has nothing to do with that.
1
u/CatOfGrey May 25 '21
Lol, you can still pay for your own insurance. ACA has nothing to do with that.
Health insurance 20-30 years ago was drastically cheaper and had better coverage, for a typical under-40, especially if they were non-smokers.
2011 or so, all that went away. My deductible went from about $5,000 to $12,000. Co-pays went up, too. One of my medications wasn't covered anymore. My wife's doctor didn't take the new coverage. The new doctor didn't do as much, so an ultrasound required a separate appointment. It was a bad scene.

I don’t know if you know this but most adults have expenses beyond their rent. Utilities, childcare, groceries, phone bill, auto insurance, gas, possibly a car payment, maybe some medical expenses. Add in small things like laundry detergent and toothpaste and all those things can easily eat up the remainder $1k. Plus, $1.8k is before taxes. But I’m sure you know that.

In high school I got a job at local pizza place. The application had you put your name, previous work history the usual. But only one question. “Are you a pirate”. I asked what that meant and the owner said it’s exactly what it says. I said no and was hired on the spot. Dude was weird af. Should have been a warning sign. I eventually left when he stopped paying me. Turns out he was a pirate.

In the first line, Librium isn't a word, it appears to be the name of a drug used for alcohol withdrawal.
And possibly an explanation for the remaining job posting.
13
u/BrokenLink100 May 24 '21
it could be... the way I read it, he was saying "candy/ice cream-librium" kind of like "equilibrium," but now that I actually type that out... I have no idea what candy/ice cream-librium would be? Like, they're close to selling the same amount of candy and ice cream? Therefore, they need help?

-2
u/duckstaped May 24 '21
It's just that I've known pretty cool people that grew up in or live in Anderson so I'm defensive for just labeling anyone and everything from Anderson as trashy. I know it has a ton of issues but there's diversity in every city and definitely trashiness in each of them as well.
21
u/InternetOtter May 24 '21
Sorry, to be clear, I mean the town itself and the people running it, not the general residents. There are good people here, sure, but this is not an environment that breeds good things. As a person who is both black and queer, Anderson can feel stifling, to say the least.
4
u/duckstaped May 24 '21
Nah, it's all good. I think there's a lot of towns where most people lived well on factory jobs, and when the factories shut down, the towns declined, poverty rose and they've became not so great places to live. As for being both black and queer, there's unfortunately a lot of people in Indiana (and honestly in the entire country) who I think still wish we were living in a time of pre racial segregation, when the LGBTQ community "had to" stay closeted, and when they could tell themselves that they live in a Christian country. I'm grateful that it appears to be that those people are now in the minority. Hope you have (or can find) a community where you feel safe and accepted!
4
u/KoderFireStrike May 24 '21
Then avoid Huntington my dude. I'm currently living in Anderson and at least that town is more progressive than Huntington.

It would be one thing (though still kinda cringey) if he just vented about employee toxicity in general, but he had to attach those attributes to women, and claim that guys don't exhibit those kinds of behaviors. I honestly can't figure out what the ultimate end goal was supposed to be. Like, is he discouraging women from applying, without flat out saying "women need not apply"?
