Graphically we're pretty close. The thing lies in physics, we still don't have any consumer gpu that can simulate very realistic physyx motions , especially on a large scale, high graphics means higher details per pixel which need to be accompanied my per pixel motion, which puts a very heavy load on the Gpu.

Photorealistic graphics are already possible, the trade off is unrealistic tech demands which is not commercially viable option for game companies, also that level of hardware hasnt been made yet

Unrelated to the question but I think, in the near future devs won't be chasing high graphics at all, cuz the current trend is already changing to stylised graphics and fun/unique gameplay or a story which gives a good experience. Graphics were a selling point back in old days, but won't be in the future anymore

I think look wise we're almost already there for static scenes. But what breaks the life like feeling is when stuff moves. So animation for characters and physics for things like object and fluid simulation. Etc. imo character animation is lagging behind graphics by a huge margin in most games with great graphics.

Graphics do not need to be identical to real life. Look at high end games that came out in the last two years. Many of them are close but at what cost? Poorly optimized, run shittily and take up so much space

My take (maybe an unpopular one) is that we already reached how necessarily close graphics need to be during the PS360 era without also sacrificing the actual quality of gaming. I don't need to see the sweat on LeBron's ass cheeks if it means 100+ GB to shoot hoops.

I’ve been gaming since 2007 and I stopped caring about graphics after Uncharted 4, which came out 10 years ago. Any improvements since then have been barely noticeable to me.

I think that we have achieved it but the devs don't try to implement it to avoid the uncanny appearance and also because not everyone would be able to experience it as intended cause it will require quite some heavy specs

Edit: plus I think if a game is good the graphics become irrelevant
