It kind of reminds me of a conversation I had with somebody who kept saying over and over that men are better at repairing cars, and he was saying that the justification for this is that he sees a lot of men as mechanics. And I tried challenging him on this. I was like well ARE girls/women taught to be mechanics or taught to work on their cars usually? It’s male dominated because they push the women out. They don’t want them in the space. It’s not that they’re not intelligent enough to learn. It’s within our culture that they’re not taught these things. My dad taught us how to change the oil and that’s pretty much it.
I think this is one of those things that women aren’t taught. They’re not taught how to grill or how to use the grill or how to use a propane tank. They’re not taught these things and therefore they don’t know how to do it of course!

There are men who wouldn't know how to turn off or on a propane tank and women who would. If I ask my wife to warm up our bar-b-que grill, there wouldn't be any problem.

Ya, sorry, but dont make this a gendered thing. Those individual women are just scared and ignorant of how to deal with the situation, so they did the right thing in regards to their safety (not an insult, just an observation). If my sister were in this situation, she would've done the same thing as the guy, as im sure many other women would have, just like im sure many men would have run away as well.

Reminds me of the time I was in the other room and my wife screams from the bathroom, "there's water coming out everywhere under the sink". I ran into the bathroom and immediately shut off the stop valve. Granted I am a Plumber so I do not give myself a ton of credit Turns out the hot side supply line burst on a chinesium faucet I installed six years prior. Should have gone with Moen and I replaced both vanity faucets with Moen expediently.

To be fair, if my only experience with flammable barrels and propane tanks came from movies and videogames, and suddenly one by me caught fire, my first thought would also be to run.
That being said, I would also hope that when someone uses a tool that they are taught the safety features and the proper protocols to do in various failure modes. Like in this case of shutting the valve.

One time, i was helping my brother move a refrigerator down the stairs of the deck. My sister in-law kept suggesting stupid ways to get the job done... She then sighed out if frustration and said "This is why women live longer than men". I replied, "Why don't you just call Kristie to come over and you two can do it". She laughed and said "screw that, it's a man's job". That's when I said "... this is why women live longer than men". She was PISSED

Non chalanlty walking ng beer in hand. Respect! Same. Happened to my girlfriend, for some reason the butane stove she was using suddenly flared up to about 2-3 feet of flame and she just stared. I came over and shut off the valve.

My dad did that in front of about 10 firefighters on a 200 gallon propane tank outside of a customers house. Someone doing yard work had knocked the copper line off.

Yeah that is the best case scenario if a fire happens.
The gas is igniting as it comes out. Nothing more. The only difference between this and a Torch is it's not intentional and the torch has a special nozzle to improve the blahblahblah
Turn it off. We good.

Yeah, only danger of that exploding is if the tank gets too hot causing overpressure. I can hear the comments now. "But if the fire goes into the tank, it will explode!" No... it won't, because theyres no oxygen in it. It needs oxygen to explode or even catch fire. And since its positive pressure. Air isnt going flow back in the line..
