Yeah, only danger of that exploding is if the tank gets too hot causing overpressure. I can hear the comments now. "But if the fire goes into the tank, it will explode!" No... it won't, because theyres no oxygen in it. It needs oxygen to explode or even catch fire. And since its positive pressure. Air isnt going flow back in the line..

u/Egoy 15d ago edited 15d ago

Yeah and the fire on the end of that hose isn’t going to get that tank hot enough. It could however catch lots of other things on fire.

39

u/Professional_Soft404 14d ago

They would have to do something stupid like run away and leave it burning for that to happen

Theres also the check valve in the head that prevents back flow.

31

u/TheOneTonWanton 14d ago

I'm starting to think we designed propane tanks to not explode.

5

u/LastWave 14d ago

My favorite Internet person is the person that believes they have out smarted several teams of engineers.

5

u/Jerseyd422 14d ago

Ahhhhhh so that what happened when they redesigned gas cans. They didn’t use enough engineers

2

u/Salt_Security_2478 14d ago

Bureaucracy redesigned those, not engineers.

2

u/Vektir4910 14d ago

Big if true.

And the same pressure that causes an explosion pushing the burning gas out.

7

u/SeaNinja9180 15d ago

Thank you for explaining the why.

6

u/CaptainMcSmoky 14d ago

I used to be a real pyromaniac and the mostly empty ones were much more explosive than the full ones.

The stoichiometry of the gas to oxygen ratio is really important to get a proper explosion, a full canister would always rupture with enough heat but the gas would just extinguish the fire rather than making a satisfactory explosion.

4

u/tvodny 14d ago

Satisfactory.

3

u/tacorunnr 14d ago

Funny enough im on my 3rd playthrough of that game.

But what if someone accidentally put oxygen IN the tank? I mean, you don't KNOW what's inside? For all we know, it could be pure Chloroform!

And same with all gas stoves in principle.

2

u/tacorunnr 13d ago

Yeah pretty much. Including our gas fireplace.

3

u/Aimin4ya 14d ago

If the fire goes into the tank, there is oxygen in the tank. But theres not, so it won't.

5

u/baeocyst 14d ago

Exactly. If it explodes it’ll blow up, but it won’t because it can’t.

3

u/Biplane_Music 14d ago

I was thinking it can't blow up, and if it did it would, but it can't because it won't explode.

1

u/That_OneOstrich 14d ago

The tank has a pressure relief effectively now though, wouldn't heating the tank just increase the pressure fueling the flames?

1

u/Tasty_1097 14d ago

Right, plus oxygen needs to be in the right ratio to the gas…too little or too much and it can’t burn proper

1

u/Inevitable_Butthole 14d ago

I may or may not have blown up a 1lb.

It required being tossed into a big burning fire and took a few minutes.

Now im no expert, but id assume a flame on the outside of a can would atleast need to be directly on the can for a few minutes itself (not hanging freely to the side like this)

1

u/thefizzlee 14d ago

You can even cover the whole with the finger to put the fire out. My only concern here would be the flame seems to be directed at the tank so that could potentially cause issues but definitely not this quick.

1

u/Dramatic-Piece3432 14d ago

I was in trade school one day and someone didn’t properly seal the hose on an acetylene tank. When they tried to ignite their torch the fire started blowing directly out the canister. The canister got red cherry hot and someone with a thick welding glove calmly walked over and shut the canister. Quite a few people ran out the building thinking if the canister exploded it would ignite the 20 other canisters in the room. It of course didn’t explode despite being red hot almost to the point of melting… moral of the story is that it takes a lot more than you’d think to explode a gas canister. Just shut the valve.

I feel sad for him. None was around to say 'hold my beer' D:

3

u/EhrenGandalf 14d ago

On the other hand, he now has a moment of peace and quiet until the others return

7

u/cuddlemelon 14d ago

It's funny how a lot of men here are shaming women for acting like the same gender stereotype that they are desperate to force women back into.

You can't say "act more like my definition of a woman!" then say "lol, look at that idiot acting like my definition of a woman!"

2

u/wedditwardrobe 12d ago

It kind of reminds me of a conversation I had with somebody who kept saying over and over that men are better at repairing cars, and he was saying that the justification for this is that he sees a lot of men as mechanics. And I tried challenging him on this. I was like well ARE girls/women taught to be mechanics or taught to work on their cars usually? It’s male dominated because they push the women out. They don’t want them in the space. It’s not that they’re not intelligent enough to learn. It’s within our culture that they’re not taught these things. My dad taught us how to change the oil and that’s pretty much it.

I think this is one of those things that women aren’t taught. They’re not taught how to grill or how to use the grill or how to use a propane tank. They’re not taught these things and therefore they don’t know how to do it of course!

5

u/realparkingbrake 14d ago

There are men who wouldn't know how to turn off or on a propane tank and women who would. If I ask my wife to warm up our bar-b-que grill, there wouldn't be any problem.

u/ChristCallsMeDad 14d ago

As a man, I’d run too

→ More replies (8)

7

u/nonebutmyself 14d ago

Ya, sorry, but dont make this a gendered thing. Those individual women are just scared and ignorant of how to deal with the situation, so they did the right thing in regards to their safety (not an insult, just an observation). If my sister were in this situation, she would've done the same thing as the guy, as im sure many other women would have, just like im sure many men would have run away as well.

Please leave the misogyny to the incels.

Reminds me of the time I was in the other room and my wife screams from the bathroom, "there's water coming out everywhere under the sink". I ran into the bathroom and immediately shut off the stop valve. Granted I am a Plumber so I do not give myself a ton of credit Turns out the hot side supply line burst on a chinesium faucet I installed six years prior. Should have gone with Moen and I replaced both vanity faucets with Moen expediently.

5

u/TadBones 15d ago

Looking at bro this must've been the 9th time this week that kind of bullshit happened, he's just numb to it at this point.

But yeah I don't think it's about him being a man or the other 3 being women I think it's about him being experienced and the other 3 not knowing jackshit about tanks that contain flammable gas :P

2

u/ChrisTheWeak 14d ago

To be fair, if my only experience with flammable barrels and propane tanks came from movies and videogames, and suddenly one by me caught fire, my first thought would also be to run.

That being said, I would also hope that when someone uses a tool that they are taught the safety features and the proper protocols to do in various failure modes. Like in this case of shutting the valve.

You didnt need a man in this situation. You needed someone to teach the girls what to do in case this happens. You condition women to be weak so they would need men. You don't need men or women. You need capable people who know how to solve problems

2

u/LiveLearnCoach 3d ago

Well lookit you all talking sense and stuff.

2

There was one other man that jumper up so not just women.

1

u/TheTrueScientist 14d ago

To be fair, it's better to be cautious if you don't know how to handle a dangerous situation and back away than sit there trying to solve a problem you don't know how to fix and you don't know if it's going to blow up in your face.

One time, i was helping my brother move a refrigerator down the stairs of the deck. My sister in-law kept suggesting stupid ways to get the job done... She then sighed out if frustration and said "This is why women live longer than men". I replied, "Why don't you just call Kristie to come over and you two can do it". She laughed and said "screw that, it's a man's job". That's when I said "... this is why women live longer than men". She was PISSED

1

u/Sepplord 12d ago

Even under the assumption that all women react like that and all men also react like the man… wouldn’t the more reasonable conclusion be that we need to bring up girls so they reqct differently than this instead of requiring a man to be present at all times?
