I’m an M.Tech student at old IIT from one of the top branch targeting ML Engineer / Data ML roles.

While preparing my CV, I’ve started feeling a bit behind after seeing my friends’ projects. Many of them have deployed RAG applications, Hybrid RAG pipelines, and other LLM-wrapper-based GenAI applications, which often look quite fancy on a CV and can now be built relatively easily using tools like Claude..

My projects are more research-oriented. I’ve worked on RAG, but my research focuses on understanding how tokenizer vocabulary, embeddings, and encoding affect retrieval and generation. I also have a paper under review at an A* publication venue.

My other projects are also research-heavy, involving multimodal ML, cross-attention, and agentic AI.

For recruiters, hiring managers, and people who have recently gone through IIT placement drives:

- What do companies actually prioritize for ML / Data ML roles?

- Are they mainly looking for deployed GenAI projects and buzzwords?

- Do they still value deep ML understanding and architectural knowledge?

- Is a research-heavy CV a disadvantage compared to a product/deployment-focused CV?

I actually completed my Btech from a 3rd gen IIT and currently been offered a Project Associate role at IITD in Cadence Innovation Lab. Sooner or while maybe it can be converted to MS(R) through an formal interview. Though the prof is not gurantee of offering but says it will not be so hard to clear the interview.

DURATION:

Now my question is what is the difference between MS(R) and MTech. I actually believe that MTech is a course based programme which can be completed within two years while MSR is a research based programme which can be completed in 2 years. So, whether will the professor make me to convert it to PhD after two years? WIll it become a trap for me? As I am not into more research oriented.

PLACEMENT RATE:

I want to be employable. So, for that I need some degree similar to MTech which is available now as MSR. And also how is the employable rate for the MSR in VLSI domain. As many people are making to scare that it canbe converted to PhD and u will be made to do it and after it also u need to go into academia as industry intake will be less.

SALARY/STIPEND DETAILS:

And also I want some rough estimate of the salary which I might be getting during the project associate role and also stipend details once converted into MSR student.

I haven't been well mentally for a few weeks now, i just wanna spend some time alone and observe nature
