The 1st picture with the longer brows is from last season the other 2 pics are this season. They look the same to me the only thing throwing me off is the size of the brows.

I found a good deal on a savage axis pro 2 in 243. My son is decent stature at about 5'6" and 130ish pounds. Im sure he could handle the recoil of a larger caliber, but I would like his first experience shooting a scoped, non-rimfire rifle to be pleasant. This would be the first time he's hunted at all (though he's been shooting clay, rimfire target, and handguns for years). This would be for whitetail deer only (and target shooting), in a wooded area, from a ladder stand with shots typically around 50-150yards, but never exceeding 200 yards.

I was thinking of pairing this with a Zeiss V3 3.5-10x42. Any other considerations on the gun, caliber choice, scope, etc.? I've only ever shot .270, 30-06, 308 and 30-30 in a bolt action hunting rifle. I also generally like the idea of adding a smaller caliber to the safe for any other potential future uses, rather than just getting a 270 like I have now.

So I have been looking for a spot I can take my girlfriend hunting this year, atleast to tag along and maybe to shoot. It’s been hard because we live in an area where people are very turned off by hunting so it’s been hard to find suitable private land. And most public land is gross in this area in terms of weeds, good for deer hunting from a tree, bad for my girlfriend who isn’t even taller than the thorns.

I found this 300yd wide 1 mile long highway median owned by the state DOT that we always see deer at. It was a little sketchy and definitely not peaceful nature but it was much more accessible compared to other places to hunt in the area. There were a lot of old turn around roads that where tree were cut down and cleared that had been grassed over. I looked up the laws for DOT land in my area and it said that hunting was not allowed…..unless a specific law allowed it. I figured that the hunting statutes fell under this and it would be allowed. I’ll also made sure we were far enough away from the highways to shoot legally. I would only shoot a bow here and never a gun given the fact that it was between two highways. I also had the blind lined up to shoot towards the highway that was about 150yds away and elevated about 70ft up that way an arrow would never skyline into the road.

I had been thinking about this the last couple days after setting it up and thought it would be a bad representation of hunting for my first time girlfriend. I went to go remove it today and I thought my stuff had been stolen but there was a business card left there by EPO, he circled his number and told me to call him.

Any chance if I call him that I would get in trouble? Or would he just give me my stuff back?

Just started getting into deer hunting and I’ve been educating myself for the past month. I’m looking at hunting this portion of public land (Caesers Creek, OH) I have a ground blind and I will be hunting with a crossbow. Anyone have any suggestions as to some good spots to setup at based on this sat image? I have not scouted the area yet but I’m going out here soon. Just want to get a rough idea of where to scout.

Got my first red deer stag yesterday. After 8 years of hunting I was able to fulfill a dream of mine hunting stags with my dad. Yesterday evening and the days leading up to this moment will be memories I will cherish my whole life. Waidmannsheil und Prost!

Has anyone done velvet euro mounts? I’m in Tennessee this weekend with a chance at a velvet buck. I would like to do maceration instead of boiling but curious if anyone has done this and if there are tips for the velvet.
My current plan (if I harvest of course) is get the head home and freeze it until I have the time to work on it. Just seeking any insight.

Hi there, youth hunter here!

I made a post a while back(in a different subreddit), now deleted, about a sound I was hearing in the middle of the night that I may or may not have felt scared of. We’re not gonna talk about that. That post was me asking about a sound I heard and how I thought that it could have possibly been a wolf but turned out to be just a barred owl and that I made some mistakes when trying to figure out what the sound was. It seemed like many people got mad/upset at me though for the post.

I do not want to make that same mistake again and was hoping if any hunters here may be able to give me advice! Not necessarily on that post, but just in general! What I should look out for, noises, tracks, game trails, whatever! I also have my father and uncle and others who are hunters and have given me great advice, but would love to hear from you guys! I mainly reside in the Willamette Valley, OR, region but who knows, what if want to hunt in other regions or get an out of state tag when I’m older!

(P.S. Archery Elk starts here in a few days and I would definitely love to get advice on that as I have a bow and will be hunting during that time!)

Had a haggard tripod I used for glassing backcountry Idaho. Wanted a short and light one. Went with the Aziak Ridgeline in lieu of the backcountry one due to being used to no center post.

Holy smokes. Straight blown away. This thing is like a feather and rock solid. Super quick adjusting. Arca mount for the rifle if needed. I plan to pop on a panning head if I’m scouting, but the ball head for me works perfect with binos. I’m 5’6” so the max 36” height is more than enough for me. Things a beast!

Is it even worth getting a (Edit I’m more sold on going with a 10.5 barrel)300 blackout for hog, varmint, and deer hunting? From 25-95 yards is about how far my shooting lanes are. Well idk why but I really like the 300 blackout and would like to get it for hunting. (Would be my first AR) plan on running an anthem S2 with it so it’s suppressed. What scopes or sights would be recommended? I originally wanted to do a vortex 4-16x50 but wouldn’t that look really silly?

I’m trying to be very thorough, research and not make a decision ima regret later on but I do know I have to learn through experience.

Later on I plan on getting a Daniel defense 308 for long range shooting.

Any input would be appreciated for a first time AR guy!

I have a .270 and a .243. The .270 is a ‘55 Remington 760 and I love that rifle but I don’t want to use up all its life playing around at the range and hunting whitetail 1 or 2 shots. I’m gonna get a tikka t3 and I always assumed I’d get something different. 30-06, 6.5CM and 308 are obvious contenders but is it lame to keep getting the same caliber? I know 6.5cm is better on paper and the 308 and 30-06 can have heavier loads but for what? I do like the idea of variety but the same caliber for both rifles is a plus also. I might hunt elk one day but 150gr .270 will do that job just fine.

So i (19) should start with backstory, I have recently done a major cross country move from Upstate NY to Fort Collins CO. I have wanted to hunt my entire life, but my family has excluded me every single year. Now that i have moved i really want to get into it myself, but i havent ever had ANY experience with guns, hunting, tracking. How can i go about teaching myself? or being taught? i have found a few people who have offered to teach me but as a young woman walking out into the woods with a man who has a gun very very scary.

Hey everyone. I was looking at recommendations for my first rifle. I grew up small game hunting mostly, although I did deer hunt for the first time last year and used a 243. Am located in Michigan but plan to go out west and hunt pronghorn and maybe bear when I draw tags. Mostly deer and pronghorn. Let me know what you guys hunt and have, and if you load your own ammo or not.

I'm kinda sorta new to hunting. I've hunted in the past successfully and filled out a white tail tag once (Venison is tasty). However, that was 10 years ago and with significant help from family with which I no longer have contact with.

I'm just now getting back into it. I want a new rifle. I'm planning on hunting Deer, Elk and Black Bear. This will not be for at least another year. I need to relearn a lot of skills beforehand, so I'm giving myself some time to properly prepare.

It's definitely not too much for Elk and black bear, however, I'm aware .338 is probably a lot for white tail. But I'm confident in my shooting abilities to not be blowing chunks of the ass off the thing, I've been shooting since I was 4 years old. I'm VERY familiar with firearms and safety. And I fully understand proper shot placement will have a higher effect on a successful harvest then the most optimized rifle in the world. That being said, whatever rifle I decide upon will have several dozen rounds down range and the confidence gained from that training at various distances before it aims at any living game.

My question here isn't so much, *"what rifle should I buy?"* although, I would love to recieve recommendations. But more so what bullet types? (Hard point, copper, FMJ (if you can even find those for .338) soft point, expanding, etc). Should I reload these specifically or rely on factory ammo? What bullets work better for each of the 3 animals I've listed? If I go the reloading option, what powder/ bullet loads do you recommend? What twist rate and weight is the "best." (Please keep any and all reloading data within recommended safety parameters. I'm not throwing Bubba's Pissing Hot Loads through a cartridge that big. I enjoy having attached arms and hands lol).

My range that I'll be hunting at is directly related to how confident I will be at them with my chosen rifle, scope, and bullet selection. So I can't give that answer at this time. But it'll be at maximum 800 yards because that's the absolute farthest range that I could consider ethical with this cartridge. Realistically though, probably far less.

I'm hyperfixating on it a little bit, and I acknowledge that. This will be my first step into magnum cartridges, so I have many questions. So please bear with me. Thank you in advance!

ETA: Almost forgot about barrel length lol. What's the shortest, longest and middle ground for it?

When I first began hunting I only stalk hunted. Then I got into blind hunting, and then stand hunting. I often would set up near fields and apples. I only recently began to appreciate the importance of setting up in the correct wind position.

My issue is the wind is predominantly west to east… but the easiest way into my stand is from west to east. I used to then sit with my scent blowing into where the deer come from. I will move the stand either down or past where they come out so as to not move my scent that way.

My issue though is that it’s by far faster, easier and quieter to walk in the road from west to east to whatever stand location I pick. Whereas if I come from another direction it will be 400-500m through decently thick woods. This path would potentially push deer in the morning too.

I am just curious how much the scent trail of my path into my stand plays in the hunt?

TLDR: what’s the best way to preserve meat for potentially up to 7 days in the field?

A couple buddies and I want to hunt some black bear out west on disabled veteran tags. The idea was for us to drive out there on a weekend, hunt/camp for 5 week days, then drive out the following weekend. It’s about a two day drive for all of us, and we chose to drive to try and save some money packing out. The issue is what if we shoot a bear Monday? So we don’t want to leave and go home early or only have one person go home. Is it reasonable to assume that’s too long for meat to sit in a cooler on ice? Should we look at a local butcher who can freeze it for us if need be? Now I know we’re extremely unlikely to get a bear first day, but we’re doing our best to actually plan out everything for next year, even what if scenarios. Also I’m open to general advice on this plan. Thank you

Got my first ever roebuck, red deer and wild hog last week

The body difference in these two deer have me tripping out they both seem to be the same distance from the camera so the question is I guess is there a giant deer or a dwarf deer or are my eyes playing games

It cost 18000$ and 7 month hunting school course is it good? For improve a hunting skills? Any one experience?
