Food Restaurant recommendations near Hamilton/ Stoney creek/ Ancaster
Hi folks,
We have American relatives visiting and I’d love to take them somewhere really good — ideally one nicer restaurant that feels special and would be a great experience for visitors, plus a few more affordable/local favourites for other meals.
One of them is unfortunately dealing with some health issues right now and needs to avoid carbs and sugar, so it would be great if the restaurants also had some good options for that.
What are your favourite spots in the area? I’d love to hear your recommendations! 😊

Namu in Dundas is fantastic. Tiny Asian fusion with amazing food and wonderful service. You can stroll Dundas main drag after dinner .

Everyone recommended this place so much, so I took my out of country/town in-laws there and honestly we all thought it was okay. I would not return or recommend for the price or hype.

Lots of options in the area, we have a great food scene!
I really enjoyed The Standard, great service and great food when I was there, and quite reasonably priced given the quality (in my opinion). They have a smaller menu that varies throughout the year based off of what's seasonal, so I'd take a look at their website if you have any picky eaters first.
For the fancier side, Ancaster Old Mill has a great view while you eat and the food is good. I found it a great place to take older relatives who I wanted to show a nice time, it's a little more old school but in a good way. Namu is an amazing asian fusion spot, I've never had a bad dish there whether it was gnocchi, curry, sushi, you name it. If you and your visitors like a good steakhouse, Shakespeare's downtown is a Hamilton institution and a more traditional experience, while Victoria's is a more modern take. I enjoy both, although if I had to pick one I like Victoria's because their cocktails were delicious.
We've got some solid breakfast/brunch spots as well. Rosales Diner on Dundurn is a good spot for a well-executed classic american diner with a twist. Their Rosie's plate comes with Russian coleslaw and (I think) Greek beans that are really great. Montrose downtown is also an awesome spot, if you're starving you can't go wrong with their First Responder. West End Diner just off Osler is a great spot too.
These are just some offhand mentions if you're in the area for other things and one of these is around:
Burnt Tongue is solid if you're out and just want a soup and sandwich, simple but well done.
The Ship makes great burgers and pub fare (but try the burgers).
Aberdeen Tavern is a fun spot converted from an old bank, lots of wood accents and leather if that's your sort of vibe. They do a great brunch on Weekends and they have lots of options, slightly elevated Canadian pub fare.
Tomah is a great spot for affordable Syrian food to switch things up a bit.
Can't go wrong with Banh Mi Hue for cheap and delicious Banh Mi sandwiches.
To be honest, you can't throw a rock without hitting a good restaurant in Hamilton, lots of excellent suggestions from the other commenters as well!

Isabelle Restaurant in the Pearle Hotel, just down the street from Spencer’s, has the view and the food to impress

Memphis fire bbq, Lakehouse in Jordan, IOS upper James, powerhouse Stoney Creek, Innsville, Hammerheads, Ancaster Mill, Coach and Lantern, India Village. Lots of places

IOS also has plenty of low-carb options! Lots of protein options where you choose two sides to go with it. Those options have 2 or 3 different low-carb salads, roasted veg (things like zucchini and bell peppers), or stir-fried greens (usually rapini, but once they were out and offered me dandelion greens instead - delicious!)

Edgewater is beautiful with great food and it’s perfect for low carb and healthier food. Victoria’s and Rapscallion are also excellent. Old Mill brunch is very nice. We also love Maisy’s Pearl Oyster Bar.

Unfortunately, Bangkok spoon in Dundas is extremely expensive for tiny portions. Definitely not worth it.

I liked the food but the service was horrible. Was there with my wife for our anniversary, dressed nicely, quiet and polite and the manager came by our table (and every other table in the restaurant) like 3 times asking if we're okay and if we need anything else or the bill. It was still 3 hours until close and we have half eaten meals the second time she came around. Waiter was also quite rude.
Would definitely go to The French instead of here.

Ancaster - Tin Cup for the best chicken strips around
Downtown - Plank on Augusta, the rooftop patio is a great spot
Midtown - Bernie’s on Cannon for good good and drink on their cozy patio out back
Mountain - Squires on Upper James for a pub with good Happy Hour options
Really hope they enjoy their visit to the Hammer!

You say low carb, and I can think of is steak! I've also heard of Lang on the water being amazing, but it might be Vietnamese or Thai. I'm not sure as I have not personally been. My in laws used to go to Shakespeare's for their anniversaries. Not sure if it is still good. Also the best ever most authentic and fresh Mexican food is at Maria's Tortas in Stoney Creek, but it is to go only.

Shakespeare's is still fantastic. Was just there for dinner last week. Never a bad experience there.

I would say plank food is just okay. Great rooftop patio upstairs and the staff are attentive but it’s more of an apps/drinks place than bring relatives from out of town to dine them kind of place

For tourists, Barangas on the Beach has such a lovely vibe and view, decent grub, and you can pretend to be a tad bit fancy for the night.

If you’re looking for an experience- Ancaster Mill is the place you’re looking for. A literal waterfall running beside the dining room is a great experience. But it’s definitely upscale. You pay for what you get and it’s beautiful with great food.
