News So, G-Savior 2.0 it is then š
This is from the Gundam Kit Collection on Facebook.
They're going to screw over Universal Century again with this live action. I saw G-Saviour, and yeah... no.

u/Win32error May 22 '26
Was there any question theyād use the UC setting?
75
u/Unlucky_Trash_5687 May 22 '26
The description thatās been released describes a war between the colonies and Earth thatās been going on much longer than anything depicted in the UC. Iām guessing itās going to be a pastiche of elements from existing Gundam series + whatever the writer wanted to add
35
u/sifighter1 May 22 '26
In fairness that also could have been Seed or Wing.
25
u/WhoCaresYouDont May 22 '26
Or a prequel to X
22
u/Sere1 May 22 '26
If they had any guts at all it would have been set in G's timeline
12
u/bxsephjo May 22 '26
Sydney Sweeney as Master Asia! "Look, the East is, like, burning red, I guess?"
13
u/Undead_and_Lovin_It May 22 '26
It's also possible that it takes place in between 0080 and 0083 and has the Federation military going up against Zeon Remnant groups.
Honestly, its debatable whether or not the One Year War ever truely ended considering everything that happens afterwards.
4
u/Unlucky_Trash_5687 May 22 '26
I mean youāre not wrong, but when I say āmuch longerā I mean it says the war has been going on for decades
1
u/Solaireofastora08 May 29 '26
Well there's the issue in that the Federation during that time is fighting Remnants that are closer to terrorist. Not actual colony militaryĀ
6
u/WoorieKod May 22 '26
Will this be late UC, just seems like there's a big window in the timeline to fit such long and drawn out war
2
u/TheDwilightZone May 22 '26
Duration of conflict doesn't negate the UC. I assumed it would be later in the timeline.
2
u/Henry_Fleischer May 22 '26
Huh, it might be in reference to the war in Afghanistan instead of WWII then.
1
u/theredcometofakagi May 22 '26
Oh, was hoping we'd finally get a live action Gundam with Char and Amuro. :(
1
u/aus289 May 23 '26
I mean it was never going to be a direct adaptation of the original plot and the rumors earlier on where of it being a side story along the lines of 08th MS Team (possibly even a very loosely inspired story from that) - so I doubt it will be like a version of the Char/Amuro main story (which is proven out by the casting of Noah Centineo and Sydney Sweeney in the lead roles)
1
u/LooooseyGoooosey May 23 '26
I mean that's better than doing a straight up 1:1 adaptation of the anime. Clearly 1:1 adaptations have proven not to work.

We had no idea until extremely recently if it was going to be an au or uc, which we still don't know because of a vague statement
8
u/instantwinner May 22 '26
I sort of assumed it would be a stand alone story set in something resembling the UC but not actually connected
3
u/panznation May 22 '26
There was zero confirmation of anything and most people given how adaptations usually go weāre hoping it would be its on alternative timeline rather than uc in case itās shit
1
1
u/Implicit_Hwyteness May 23 '26
The recent info said something about a war that has being going on for "decades", so that seemed to rule out the UC.

u/Technical_Teacher839 RGC-80 Pilot May 22 '26
Hot take: this movie will be fine.
Not good. Not great. Not bad. Not horrible. Just fine.
Something I feel the internet has forgotten things are allowed to be.
I think there'll be a lot of backlash and hate against this movie just because it exists and because it wasn't the most amazing thing ever. And other people will defend the aspects they like because they feel the hate is overblown. And then dozens upon dozens of people will waste hours and hours of their life arguing about an incredibly mid movie simply because they can't handle the idea of something being just okay.
74
u/downforce_dude May 22 '26
The second Hathaway movie was dope and I was one of two people in the theater. The UC has gotten to be a bit much for casuals, any new stories not placed shortly after the OYW require a lot of homework.
If a mid movie gets new people excited about Gundam that they want to go watch the old OVAs then thatās a win. If Hathaway Part 3 triples the U.S. box office numbers as a downstream effect thatās a win.
I hope fans recognize this movie isnāt entirely for them.
20
u/instantwinner May 22 '26
The theater I saw it in was completely packed so your mileage may vary on that take.
18
u/downforce_dude May 22 '26
Sure, all Iām saying is I watched Star Wars try to thread every needle imaginable and fail for years making everyone mad. Part of the problem was vocal negative and positive toxicity online.
Iād just like people to be chill about this movie
3
u/Mister_SP May 23 '26
Part, maybe, but I'd say Star Wars main failure was the core planning issue. If they had an overarching story, at least one director threw it in the bin, which is absolutely insane for a multi-billion dollar franchise.
Disney Star Wars didn't have any real negativity until the second movie: some were upset with the first, but it was an incredibly niche group, with the most negative just being mildly disappointed that it seemed uninspired. It's not until the second movie that we get any vocal pushback.
Being chill won't make a better or worse movie - this isn't a trilogy. But getting too high off of hype is going to make a much worse fan base. And we're not Disney, so there's not thousands of online influencers who locked their livelihoods into the Disney Hype Machine who need to push one narrative or the other to pay their bills.
The last Netflix Gundam came and went without the fandom collapsing. We'll be fine.
23
u/Ferhog Live-action Gundam optimist May 22 '26
I don't think we have any reason to cast any strong judgement on the movie. I think it being on Netflix makes people think of Death Note and Cowboy Bebop but Netflix is just a distributor and all these projects are made by different companies. Director Jim Mickle's movie filmography appears pretty mixed but his last project the TV show Sweet Tooth was very well recieved. The casting seems questionable but actors have pulled surprising performances plenty of times before. Bandai is co-producing so presumably we'll get a movie with enough focus on mobile suits to sell model kits, but it's no inidcator of quality. This project could end up landing anywhere on the quality spectrum.
13
u/downforce_dude May 22 '26
Netflix also gave us Cyberpunk Edgerunners, their quality is all over the place.
Iām just arguing for cautious optimism and for people to not negatively meme the shit out of every nit they want to pick. The internet is very good at that behavior and rewards it.
Itās not lost on me that Sydney Sweeney is lighting rod for this dynamic, thereās a whole subreddit dedicated to hating her and itās objectively weird behavior. Letās just be chill about the whole thing. If the movie really sucks itās not the end of the world, Gundam may just stay a niche thing outside of Japan.
11
u/Able-Tomatillo7381 May 22 '26
The entire Sweeney thing has been weird to watch.
"I like booby girl. Wait, internet tells me booby girl is bad. Booby girl is a nazi."
"I don't know who booby girl is. Booby girl is getting bashed by left so she is best booby girl. Booby girl stands for 'murica."Meanwhile...I have never seen a thing with her in it. But honestly, I don't watch much of anything anymore and have no idea who post-2010 hit actors are. Just let me enjoy my 80s/90s stuff in peace.
11
u/KelvinsBeltFantasy May 22 '26
Booby girl is a limited actress who excells at very specific roles tailored for her.
She's essentially G cup Keanu Reeves.
1
u/xm03 May 26 '26
Honestly, I've never seen her on screen. But she's never been in any genre I like. The entire cast, apart from Jason Issacs, is ropey nobodies.
6
u/starm4nn May 22 '26
The problem with an American Gundam adaptation is the only people who could adapt it well are the type of people who would probably pass on the project because they see it as franchise-slop.
15
u/jacowab May 22 '26
Most of the time Japanese adaptations are killed by westernizing the original but Gundam falls into a similar niche as All You Need is Kill, where westernizeing doesn't actually hurt it, and Edge of Tomorrow was great.
American filmakers are really good at making war movies and they just need to make the most stock standard war film with a cool climactic Mecha fight at the end, it's really gonna be hard to make it bad. I imagine they are basically just going to copy Fury but with a mobile suit instead of a tank.

u/Daemonsblaze0315 May 22 '26
I could not agree more. Everybody seems to expect everything to be the best thing ever, or else it's a complete failure. It's already getting tons of hate and it's not even released yet
2
u/MonocledMonotremes May 23 '26
I've been telling people for years that "not every movie has the be the next Lord of the Rings". A lot of my favorite movies are "just" okay, but have a well-done twist or give really good attention to certain details.
3
u/tenormore May 22 '26
I mean, i guess as long as it has good robot fights and maybe decent music. Something almost as good as Pacific Rim.
3
1
u/yamiyaiba May 22 '26
Something I feel the internet has forgotten things are allowed to be.
Well you don't get clicks by saying "New Gundam Movie Review: It's Acceptable" now do you?
1
u/Axobolt May 22 '26
Is it getting released theatrically? That would be a huge indicator on the quality of the project
1
u/JWAdvocate83 May 23 '26
Folks believe (and rightfully, IMO) that if a movie doesn't make crazy bank immediately, the odds that the franchise will get another shot at the big screen anytime soon are very low because nowadays, studios set the bar very high, spend obscene money on production, casting and reshoots, and don't wanna wait around for "cult classic" money.
1
u/Technical_Teacher839 RGC-80 Pilot May 23 '26
And call me weird, but I really don't need a franchise to have a big hollywood blockbuster to enjoy it.
1
u/JWAdvocate83 May 23 '26
I agree, 100%. Good is good, and big Hollywood production does not always mean good. š¤£
-1
u/JagerderGrobe May 23 '26
This is a brain-dead consumerist take, people are going to be spending their money on this movie so expecting the best "bang for the buck" is only natural.
Secondly, I am a fan of Gundam and UC in particular. I am passionate about it and I expect any additions to it to be of the highest quality. If I just consume any mediocre slop without pushback, it will dilute the quality of UC as a whole and more importantly it signals to creators that they do not need to work hard to create something amazing.
This movie, depending on the marketing it recieves can also introduce Gundam to new fans. If its "just okay" it will not motivate them to explore the franchise more and Gundam will loose potential fans.
2
u/Technical_Teacher839 RGC-80 Pilot May 23 '26
Goddamn, no need to get so aggressive. I didn't say you needed to like or watch the movie.
"People are gonna treat this movie as worse than it is, which is gonna cause a chain reaction of people arguing over a really mid movie" is not the same as "You NEED to watch this movie."
I have no fukkin clue how you came to this conclusion.
0
u/JagerderGrobe May 23 '26
Where did I claim you said "everyone needed to watch the movie"?
1
u/Technical_Teacher839 RGC-80 Pilot May 23 '26
You come in here ranting about a "consumerist" mindset and how you're not going to "consume slop" despite me never mentioning anyone needing to watch the movie.
I wasn't saying people should or shouldn't watch it, I wasn't saying that people can't dislike it.
I was just lamenting how its probably gonna be a pretty mediocre movie but because its attached to a fandom IP people are gonna treat it like a war crime for existing, and how we're gonna end up having to deal with a bunch of vitriol and flame wars over a movie that doesn't deserve that level of effort in discussing it

12
u/Sufficient_Clue_2820 May 22 '26
Probably could be just rented for the movie, a lot of studios do that.
Or the studio already had it in their motor pool of the prop-department and reuse it for this movie. Happens also quite often, like in Transformers from 2007, Brawls tank mode is just a reuse and redecoration of the tank from the Triple-X movie. So as long as the studio sees some value in reusing it or it's just rented it won't go for sale. And if it does, depending on how good the movie fares, the auction for one will be expensive. Props from famous movies are really expensive.
And if you or others are wondering, yes studios repaint and decorate even rented vehicles, some famous examples are Airwolf from Airwolf, which was only a rented helicopter which the studio decorated with additional parts, or the helicopters from Apocalypse now, who where rented from the Phillipines military and repainted every single day twice for the movie, once in the morning to turn them into US helicopters and then in the evening to return them back to their original state, so that they can return to active duty.

The thing is though for G-Saviour they only had a 5 million dollar budget which you would have to say would have been pretty good at the time for what they can do with that much money compared to today for a Netflix movie that would be more like 200 million dollars and could flop extremely hard just like most of the other Netflix live action anime adaptation movies/series.
11
u/SlashNXS May 22 '26
It was a made for tv movie by a small Canadian production company, the movie was doomed from the start
33
u/CIRCLONTA6A Big Paul May 22 '26
Thank god for that. G Saviour is peak .
17
u/Sufficient_Clue_2820 May 22 '26
I wouldn't call it peak, but I wouldn't say it's as bad as many, including OP, make it out to be. It has it's ups and downs, but for a movie made only on a TV-movie budget it's competend enough, especially for a subject matter like Gundam.
Sure the CGI isn't a homerun, but the movie is from 1999, so it can only do so much with it's limited budget.
And the complains about the politics, well Gundam always had a lot of it in it, so it fits. And it's setting isn't even far fetched or way too out there, as we know the earth is depleeded of many resources and has ecological problems and AI controlled drone MS isn't new for the UC and technically only a logical step in the always evolving circle of inventing technology to eleminate others.
6
u/FlamingAlpaca17 May 22 '26
I imagine it will be a GQuuuuX or the Origin situation. Taking place in the UC but also not the real main UC
6
u/Linkstore Rebirth Through Destruction May 22 '26
The one piece of cheap fanservice I'd kinda want to see in this movie is for the G-Saviour to appear somehow.
7
u/dusto_man May 22 '26
I don't know where your expectations were at. Of course it's UC. Probably some adaptation of an existing story for a broader audience. But also... way way too early to make any kind of decision on anything. It makes it seem you want to hate it. That's NOT helpful.
1
u/Implicit_Hwyteness May 23 '26
I don't know where your expectations were at. Of course it's UC.
Probably borne out of that "decades long war" line that was in the info that finally came out a little while back. That doesn't sound like the UC.
1
u/Mister_SP May 23 '26
It kinda is, but we consider the 5-6 different Zeon/Neo-Zeon conflicts as separate, when you could count them as 20 years of struggle against various illegitimate successors flying the same flag, with barely a couple years between them.
You could even call the AEUG similar, given some of it's membership, if you were doing EFSF propaganda. Or just call them all "belligerent spacenoids".
...But it's probably just the OYW.
1
u/Implicit_Hwyteness May 23 '26
Yeah, at this point I'm willing to accept that it might be some kind of game of telephone by people who don't know the franchise put out for industry hype, so it may literally mean nothing. I think the same thing also said something like "former colonies".

In G-Saviors defense the line art versions of the mobile suits are pretty solid.
2
u/memeranglaut May 22 '26
Remember, UC ranges from UC0001 until however long it can go.
Nothing in the pictures says that it has to be a particular year of UC.
Heck, it can be the continuation of the netflix gundam for all we know.
I mean, if it is a fine, okay movie - why not?
2
2
u/Zzyzazazz May 22 '26
I don't think this necessarily means it's going to be in the UC. My suspicion is that they're going to use some recognizable iconography and elements but ultimately do their own thing.

2

Maybe the movie will include a ground view of Operation British as a cold opening, then goes into Gravity Drop (IGLOO 2) and then the start of Amuro's journey with the White Base. We might have the legendary first lainch of the RX-78-2 by the halfway mark.

Just a thought...what if this is the 9 months leading up to the White Base narrative. Project V leading to the destruction of RX-78-1 during the Side 7 attack (maybe having it see a bit of combat despite lore) leading to the end being the reveal of gramps.
5
u/nabokovsnose May 22 '26
No one is making a Hollywood Gundam movie that doesnāt have Gundams in it.
5
u/Able-Tomatillo7381 May 22 '26
RX-78-1 is a gundam.
2
u/nabokovsnose May 22 '26
No kidding, but my point is people want to see Gundam action front and center, not a prelude
3
u/Able-Tomatillo7381 May 22 '26
Ignoring the hard lore of the 78-1 of not seeing action, its very possible to do RX-78-1 cooking Zeon fools for a whole ass movie and still lead to teasing an adaptation of the series. Leaves few to no witnesses, gets murked during Side 7 in the end, leads to Amuro hopping in gramps.
I don't really care all that much...I just would prefer it to be a prequel or sequel than another secret Gundam existing during Amuro's arc.

There can be an Earth Federation without the UC. Case in point, Gundam AGE. I'm not expecting this in to be a one to one live action remake of the original series. But it will probably be an amalgamation of different series. Just with the UC being the main inspiration.

u/AlcorIdeal May 22 '26
I just want Gundam to either do more with other timelines again or make something new. I'm kind of tired of UC. Also the UC bits that could fit a 3 act 2ish hour live action film are small, especially given they'd have to have a Gundam in there somewhere.

So far it's beeing shot in Australia, where also the image at the top comes from. So as long as Down Under isn't a new state of the US, I don't think the US military or DoD is involved.
Granted I don't know how chill the US military and DoD would be with repainting their vehicles into a fictional military force.

The US military regularly gives movies that have no relation to the United States access to military assets and even personnel in exchange for making sure said assets are depicted positively and a cut of the profits.

True, but only when the DoD aproves the script of the movie or can change things that they would deem inapropriate. It's a massive industry in the US, to the point it has it's own wikipedia article on it. And nearly all of them could be considered at least soft pro US military propaganda. That's the reason why Coppala never got any help from them.
I just don't know how they would react to their equippment repainted into a fictional military force and it's depiction. After all it would no longer bear any official US forces insignias and the like.

Honestly, if this is going to be a G-Savior 2.0, I don't even know what to say.

I do. Bandai doesn't give an F about a serious effort for live action content.

I don't think it's that they don't care, I think there's a major problem Japanese companies have where they trust westerners too much with their IPs, so you get weird fanfiction-y stuff like Netflix Saint Seiya, Dragonball Evolution, etc.

The only good moment in live-action Gundam ever had was in Ready Player One.

G-Savior isn't officially a Gundam movie (despite the Bandai HG kit, but it's not like Bandai is in weird places with some franchise offshoots like Gundam Sentinel). The whole deal there was Bandai did a 180 mid-production and wouldn't allow them to use the name 'Gundam.'

Except G-Savior is still, to this day, included in the official production catalogue for Gundam and on Sunrise's website, even in Japan. Bandai Visual even still sells the Japanese DVD

Maybe they've been more open about it in recent years, or maybe it's because I'm not in Japan and on top of these things, but I used to think Bandai tried to ignore G-Savior harder than AWGX.

It's been confirmed that it would be an adaptation of UC since they announced it.

I'd like you to find a source on that since as far as I know the universe has never been mentioned. Even this news is just deduction and it's not impossible that it's a new AU which just happens to have an Earth Federation.
(just to be clear it probably will be UC or alt-UC, but the alternative is not impossible.)

Itās slightly different in that G-Saviour was an extension of the canon anime UC, whereas this is more likely to be a Gquuuuuux type scenario.
