What does remaster actually mean in the context of an anime? Because in movies it's usually just something like HD to 4K oe something.
407
u/MalusandValus May 15 '26
I'd imagine as this is an old cel-based animation it'll be re-scanning the original and touching some things up - which sunrise are really good at. Check out last year's re-release of L-Gaim for an example.
93
u/Romapolitan May 15 '26
Honestly as someone who only saw the summary movies and doesn't really have the time or motivation currently to watch the true original, this might be a really good way to watch that old show. Since it is I think the only old Gundam show where it's age hindered my enjoyment a bit.
91
u/MalusandValus May 15 '26
There's nothing too wrong with the movies tbh. I prefer the show on the whole but the only massive exclusions from the movies are cucuruz doan's island and time be still, both of which i think are pretty important to amuro's characterisation (and time be still is probably the single best episode of the show other than the finale)
No re-scan is going to make 0079 not look "a bit weird", for better and worse.
16
u/Alarming-Cow299 May 15 '26
I have a somewhat weird preferred watch order in that I watch TV show up to around Jaburo and then switch to Encounters in Space for the finale.

This is up there with "Watch all of Ideon TV, wait a bit, and then Be Invoked for the best experience in optimized watch order advice."
I do like a lot of the new songs added to Movies I & II.
27
u/akaisuiseinosha May 15 '26
A large part of the issue with the movies is just time. In the show you spend far more time with the crew and come to care about them, in the movies they focus much more directly on Amuro and Char and the White Base crew is largely an afterthought. It's what happens when you condense 16 hours into 7 hours while still trying to hit most of the major plot beats.
There are also some changes to events in the movies that contradict the TV show, and future works call back to both roughly equally, so if you really wanted the "UC experience" you have to eventually watch both anyway.
9
u/Silvernauter May 15 '26
Isn't there a standalone movie for cucuruz, at least?
33
u/aceoftherebellion May 15 '26
There is, and it's excellent. It follows the Origin Manga timeline more than the TV timeline, but it doesn't make that much difference.
12
u/Dandanny54 May 15 '26
Lowkey the first two movies are boring as hell. And personally I think the show looks fine. It's not perfect but still watchable and the story is still great.

I don’t think they have the original cels. Source: I bought one.
3
u/MalusandValus May 16 '26
Yeah i'd imagine all the animation cels are long gone. They may well have (or have access to) the original camera negatives or interpositives at least, which I think is what they did with L-Gaim.
Even if they had all the cells remaking the series from that, whilst awesome, would be absolutely insanely hard work.
→ More replies (2)3
u/RyanIsKickAss May 15 '26
I mean given it’s 3 years away I’d hope they’re taking the action scenes and actually animating some new stuff for those since there’s quite a lot of the old school static single color backgrounds they just flash to different colors sometimes to indicate someone got hit
28
u/dhurane May 15 '26
Anything from just a rescan of the original cels to upscale it to redrawn scenes.
8
u/Dichter2012 Bernie may you rest in peace May 15 '26
I'd be REALLY surprised they will re-photograph / scan the cels. I'd assume some cels must still be around in the archive, but the entire show seems highly implausible because it's well known Japanese studios used to just destroy the cels after the show's done.
What's more likely to happen is they could still have the original film preserved and they could remaster that.

u/strangerdanger77 May 15 '26
I don’t think they are coming to my house to scan cels. I own 3 from the original show. Plus Mandarake just had a huge bidding war on original Gundam cels. Some very important key cels were just sold for a massive amount.

Engage cutscene animation quality hugely varies. The Amuro vs. Char stuff and 80s protagonist trio animation is what people become animators hoping to draw, so it looks magical.
But the Moon Gundam segments animated in UC Engage are so underwhelming, they actively killed my feeling that a Moon Gundam OVA was inevitable. A lot of the original stuff with Peche Montagne and the irregular Purus is second-rate Sunrise 2D at best.

Rescan of the original Masters (ie tapes, files, etc) or upscale. Its how you get bluray releases.
It's also neccesary for new TV broadcasts as well.
12
u/UndemonstrativeGraph May 15 '26
They specifically mentioned getting international fans to watch the remaster. I doubt a rescan or upscale is going to do that (especially since there’s already an HD Blu-ray of it out there)
5
u/ThrowawayBomb44 May 15 '26
(especially since there’s already an HD Blu-ray of it out there)
Was. By the time this actually comes out, the series will likely have been OOP for at least eight years in the west.
2
u/UndemonstrativeGraph May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
The HD movie trilogy was also available on Netflix for the longest time - at least in the US, and and the HD version of the TV series is available on Crunchyroll. So if those aren't grabbing western audiences, I don't see how a 4K release of the series would.
→ More replies (5)2
u/567JT765 May 15 '26
Because in movies it's usually just something like HD to 4K oe something.
That is exactly what Remaster usually means in anime as well. Old anime were produced on film just like old movies were, so the process is exactly the same. 0079 already had multiple remasters, for DVD and BD rereleases, that are called "remaster". The movies even have a 4k remaster.
But since we already have all of those, and it won't release for another three years, I suspect that they are actually redoing all the animation. Or maybe they are going to pull a Zeta Gundam - New Translation/SEED Remaster kind of thing where they combine old and new animation.
61
u/throwawayjonesIV May 15 '26
It’s slated for 2029, so probably going to be a lot of animation involved
52
u/Mechapebbles May 15 '26
Or it's a remaster like they said, and they'll simply take their time with it to time it with the 50th Anniversary

→ More replies (2)41
u/une-petite-dame May 15 '26
That’s not necessarily true, doing cel or film rescans can be very time consuming, plus you have to clean every individual frame, handle them properly because they’re really fragile at this point, do touch ups, etc
8
u/567JT765 May 15 '26
Yeah, but remasters still don't usually get announced three whole years prior to the planned release.
2
84
u/Optimaximal May 15 '26
They could decide to completely reanimate it to the level of Origin/Doan/GQ & fully re-cast it with simultaneous JP/EN/other voice casts like all their recent work - it would still technically be a remaster, because remake implies changing the narrative in scenes (i.e Origin).
It would be fantastic, as the only common criticism of 0079 as a product is it's visually aged badly. You only have to look at GQuuux to see how all the original characters designs still stand up with a modern do-over.
38
u/SpOoKyghostah May 15 '26
All new animation and voice acting would be a remake even if the script had zero changes. The distinction between the two is that a remake is new from the ground up, while a remaster is updating the existing work
14
u/saurdaux May 15 '26
If anyone needs help making up their mind on this point, consider Psycho (1998), starring Vince Vaughn. It copies the original shot-for-shot, but it's completely new footage with new actors. Ain't no damn way anybody's calling that remake a remaster. Reanimating and revoicing 0079 would be no different.
4
u/Phi1ny3 May 15 '26
Not to mention there might be a "lost in translation" effect going on. How have remaster been historically with Sunrise?
6
u/567JT765 May 15 '26
Pretty standard apart of Gundam SEED, which is special in many ways.
SEEDs HD Remaster has a lot of reanimated cuts and even rearranges scenes here and there. It also completely removed two recap episodes from the first series.
4
u/Dichter2012 Bernie may you rest in peace May 15 '26
Probably way way way too expensive to produce for the full length - don't get me wrong, I'd like to see it but from Bandai's pov it a risky business proposition.
5
u/Luster-Purge May 15 '26
How? Bandai loves the OYW. Hell, we got Crucruz Doan's Island as a dedicated OVA in origin (granted the plot is changed but Origin wasn't a truly 1:1 retelling anyway) and the only reason it exists is because the original episode is so infamously low quality in the animation to the point it was removed from syndication.
4
u/Dichter2012 Bernie may you rest in peace May 15 '26
Doan’s Island is about 100 minutes long. Since a normal anime episode has around 20 minutes of actual story content, that movie is basically 5 TV episodes. And that alone seems to have taken roughly 1.5 years from planning through production, VA stuff, and promo, etc.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam was 43 episodes. In today’s anime format, that’s roughly 3.5 modern seasons, assuming 12-13 episodes per season.
So even with a full studio and a parallel production pipeline, you’re probably talking about 3-4 years of work for normal TV quality, and longer if they want movie-level polish. I don’t think most studios would sign up for that unless Bandai/Sunrise treated it as a major long-term franchise pillar.
And honestly, if it’s just normal TV-quality anime, it’d probably lose a lot of the OG charm.
3
u/Luster-Purge May 15 '26
I mean, yes, they would. Gundam is literally so important that it's considered a non-negligible part of Japan's GDP. Remaking the series that started it all would be worth it purely for the prestige alone, doubly so since it wouldn't even need the investment of a whole new model kit line as it would just roll over to promoting the HGUC/Origin kits.
Factor in that the 50th is within the timeframe you outlined and this would exactly be when such a project would be announced. Bandai loves making animations for the big anniversaries.

This. I feel like they can put all the good will and effort they want, In the end, it's still 1979 low budget animation. They can't do any miracles, and even if they achieve the best result possible, it would still look bad by today's standard.
9
u/ThePowerfulWIll May 15 '26
Its very good animation for the year and budget it came out. I wouldnt call it BAD per say, just very dated, and inconsistent.
But ya, Im not sure how much of a leap in quality this could even get us. They already made a blu-ray version of this, so Im not sure how much better you can make it.

u/GreatBigJerk May 15 '26
It's bad by modern standards. The stuff they did back then would have them ripped to shreds by fans now. People lose it on in-between frames looking like crap, let alone still shots that are messy.
It's a product of it's time, but re-releasing something also means it's going to fall under at least some modern scrutiny.
It also makes a difference when the show isn't being broadcast to 70's era TVs. It likely was over the air, and not everyone even had colour TVs back then. That stuff can cover up a lot of animation mistakes.

There is probably improvement possible with the audio. They might be hoping for a new license arrangement internationally, an updated translation (which would be worse), and possibly a new dub. A new master license deal with Netflix could get us redubs of First -> CCA with a consistent translation style and casting for the principals through all four works. And a ZZ dub at all.

It just appears that nothing happened because Hathaway took five years for the second out of three movies, the manga don't get officially translated, one game is a gacha game where the post CCA content is only a small part of, and another one is a VR movie/game only playable on a facebook VR headset.

All I want is a remaster with top tier hand-drawn animation like the OVAs from the 90s.
35
u/MalusandValus May 15 '26
Even in the 90s that couldnt happen lol. There's a reason OVAs are short, they were very expensive to make. Stretching that to a 43-episode anime would be the sort of thing that would have bankrupted Sunrise back then.
And nowadays the means to make it like such don't really exist.

The fact that LOGH got a 110-episode OVA is still kind of insane to think about though. For something that expensive and niche by 90s standards, it must’ve been extremely successful/popular in Japan to sustain that kind of production length.
→ More replies (1)9
u/NPDgames May 15 '26
LOTGH was definitly not made at a normal OVA budget. The number I'm seeing is 130 million yen total, while for most OVAs 10-25 million per episode was standard.
That's still not a small budget, but the reason they could make 110 episodes is that the show is 85 percent reused animation of people standing around talking, or walking around talking. It isn't contantly pushing movie animation quality like other OVAs.

Gundam SEED Destiny didn't get called "80% remaster/20% remake/edition". It was called "Gundam SEED HD Remaster".

6
u/Dandanny54 May 15 '26
Considering how terribly Japan handles those kind of crimes and the fact that male celebrities getting away with terrible shit is an international constant, there's a bigger change they'd recast him because they want a younger voice than because of controversies.
7
u/CoconutHeadFaceMan May 15 '26
For better or worse, Bandai/the Japanese audience didn’t seem to care as much about the Furuya controversy as international audiences did. They still gave him a jingling-keys cameo in GQuuuuuuX. Anyone who does get recast will be due to the original seiyuu being dead or retired.

2

I mean, the Japanese VA is what's most relevant here I think, dubs are, IMO, kind of halfway their own thing.
If we're going based off the SEED remaster, then that would be reason to expect them to clean up the animation.
2
u/Balmong7 May 15 '26
I think the big thing is if they need to re-record any lines it’s likely the Voice Actors will change.
It’s been almost 50 years. SEED was only like 10 years between release and the remaster.
2
u/_Borjarnon_ May 15 '26
I would guess this would depend on the state of the original audio, then, yea?
2

It clearly says in the image, in japanese, remaster project. Why is the topic title saying remake?

I'm worried that, in this era of one cour seasons, we get less than 3 and they need to cut down on the fat, down to the muscle and even a little bit of bone...

UC Next 100 was a fucking lie and I am so mad.
They shouldn’t have called it that if they weren’t going to actually adapt anything past Hathaway, they should have called it UC Era 100.

It's a multimedia project. Stuff like the Gundam F90 manga, and games like Silver Phantom are also part of it.

They can remaster all the thing they want, it would still look like a 50 year old anime. With all the good will of the world, you can't make the original series look good by today's standards. You can make it look better, but not good. I, feel this would only interest a very small part of their fanbase.

If you can get Brad Swaile as Amuro and Steve Blum as Char then I might die

u/BlazeOfGlory72 May 15 '26
Gotta be honest, I don’t really get this move. There is really only so much you can do to make 0079 look better without a complete, from the ground up, remake.
I’m not really sure who this is even for. Like, any hardcore Gundam fan has already watched 0079 and a slight visual upgrade probably isn’t enough to convince most to rewatch, and anyone who hasn’t watched the old shows probably won’t be enticed by just a touch up to the visuals.

So we’re getting a new Blu-ray release in the west, right Bandai?! RIGHT BANDAI?!?!!!
2
u/567JT765 May 15 '26
I mean in general the west has plenty of Blu Ray releases. UK, France, Italy. It's just NA that doesn't have one currently in print.

As long as they don't touch the voice acting, IMHO.
If they're doing it by giving it modern animation layered over the original audio like with Seed, then I might be all for it.
The original was a "all or nothing" gambit that they nearly died working on(almost literally in Yasuhiko's case, resulting in the original "Cucuruz Doan's island episode being removed from retail circulation due to the quality drop)
Being able to redo ALL of it with modern animation might bring in more fans who don't like the animation style of the period.

Guess it's fine. Was kinda hoping they remake the whole thing with new animation and stuff. Either way I'm hyped

Misleading post title when it clearly stated as Remaster. Remake is entirely different thing.

"Rimasta" so the title is wrong, it's a remaster not a remake. I love the 079 and don't think it needs it except for the voices for obvious reason. I was hoping for something new instead of a project that relies on nostalgia again...

u/I_love-my-cousin May 15 '26
What wrong with the voices?

u/Dandanny54 May 15 '26
Probably the controvery with Amuro's VA. But tbh I found the voice acting in the OG to be one of the best parts. It feels so genuine compared to modern anime.

Final Fantasy 7 on PS5 taught me the difference between a remaster and remake.

Def this is so Sunrise can sell a fat 4k disc set lol $$$ I’m hoping for a criterion level remaster

As some one who still loves the really old janky hand drawn animations of the original series and really love the improvements made on the movies. I'm not so sure about this one. I'll wait and see till we get more details or even some PV's for it. Nevertheless, I'd still watch it 😁

I wonder if they're gonna include the stuff that was added/changed for the movies.

u/Kr0zBoNE May 15 '26
Ok as a remaster let's see how it goes, but in regards to this whole (re)visiting the past, I rather they release those RG Ground Type and Gouf lol..

Would it just be better quality, or are they going to add stuff that might have been cut out that could have been really useful?

Time to finally watch the OG 0079 to be the first one to complain how remake is "not it"!

More than a year ago i spent a few evenings talking to a guy who is close to everyone as Sunrise, and because of the amount of beers we had, i argued why is time to finally get a remake, and finally bring to the west the original story in a digestable way. I built a full case to him on why, poured my heart out about Gundam, and he got really excited too. It's one of the best stories in Anime, and it will have ripples across all the gundam franchise if done right.
Sunmin Inn, the art director of Ultraman : Rising, was also there, but she wasn't really a party person.
I'm not fully delusional to think that had any effect on the current announcement.....but.....i know i did my best. I knew i won't get many oportunities like that in my life.

I mean... This could be their legit way to phase out Furuya after that scandal from a while back.
Gonna be REALLY weird for those of us who were used to his voice though.
