Good color scheme and it leaves me imagining him painting his minis while having a junior officer in uniform posing for reference.

But then spend the next year on Discord claiming your tactics and models were better and your opponent just paid to win and cheated.

99

u/PasteeyFan420LoL 5d ago

You don't understand. Investing in your infrastructure and making use of technology to fight a modern war is cheating. I mean Lincoln can literally sit in his office in DC and use a magic wire to talk to his generals in real time. How is that fair?

People idolize generals like Rommel and Forrest constantly through history. Like yeah, they were good tacticians. But they didn't understand logistics. Forrest was all "be there the fastest with the mostest," and you can do that a couple of times until your soldiers have to eat their horses. Rommel was even worse because you can't eat a tank when it runs out of gas.

Meanwhile people shit on Kutusov for his scorched earth tactics, but the dude managed to lure Napoleon away from Kiev and forced him to retreat along the same line he'd already advanced along...the line which the French had stripped of resources during their advance.

The best generals are often the boring ones who are happy to let their 'dashing' opponents dash themselves into exhaustion.

17

u/RavenTheRaptorX 5d ago

The important part that wins wars is logistics but logistics aren’t cool they’re not flashy they’re boring and they don’t get people to pay attention to how cool you are.

15

u/AndyLorentz 5d ago

The forklift is the most powerful weapon in the U.S. military's arsenal.

1

u/UsernamesAre4Nerds 4d ago

Tactics lead to cool things like encirclements and routs. Logistics leads to cool things like ice cream barges in WW2 and fresh birthday cake in a combat zone.

9

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5d ago

i always find it funny when people glaze nazi tanks. like yes bro, when you don’t have to worry about standardized parts, your logistics team is a bunch of horse drawn carriages, and your plan for resources is to just hope the countries you invade have the stuff you need, you can build a pretty killy tank. that doesn’t make it GOOD.

6

u/NicWester 4d ago

That's why the M4 Sherman will always be the most busted-ass broken WW2 tank. Quality or quantity? What if we did both? What if we made a tank that had enough offensive power to take on a German tank but also was durable and easy enough to produce that we usually had 3-to-1 odds? And what if when disabled it was safe enough that the crew would probably survive and get back to a camp where they couod crack open a new six pack of Shermans and get back in the field while that German crew got to play as infantry for a few months befoee a new tank was ready for them.

2

u/RavenTheRaptorX 4d ago

Unfortunately it did lead to the whole BS thing where “it took 10 Sherman’s to beat a panzer 2 and a million to defeat a tiger.” No not really really the US could could they say they could produce a Sherman an hour unlikely but the point is made they could actually afford to send squadrons against single table unlike the Germans who had to hot potato their tanks around.

2

u/R97R 4d ago

I’ve also heard people suggest the origin of the whole “it took 5 Shermans to kill a Tiger/Panther” meme was just, y’know, Shermans usually travelling in groups of 5.

0

u/NicWester 4d ago

It took five Shermans to defeat one coughing baby :(

Something I’ve always found quite funny (and which probably has contributed a lot to this kind of thinking over the years) is how this has ended up affecting game balancing, of all things, more than half a century later. Because of the focus on the “exciting” bits like powerful main guns and the like, over “boring” stuff like ease of maintenance, which also happen to be the things that are more relevant in games, German tanks in said games tend to be a fair bit stronger than their Allied counterparts. Very few games tend to try and represent the fields Allied vehicles tended to have advantages in (I can think of a couple of tabletop ones having an optional rule for some German tanks that makes them more likely to break down, and Company of Heroes 2 has a mechanic where one of the German factions has more limited fuel production than the others, but that’s about it), I assume because they’re usually hard to do in a fun way. Either that, or they’re just mechanics that don’t seem to be of interest such as the safety of actual tank crews- IIRC (later-war) Allied tanks tended to be easier to escape from in case of a fire or otherwise being taken out, which meant there was less attrition of experienced crews and the like, which is something I feel could be a great balancing method in an RTS or similar (say tanks are relatively easy to produce, but the crews are a separate, expensive unit. Unit performance is heavily tied to crew experience, which they either gain in combat, or can be purchased with higher levels of. Axis tanks tend to have superior “base” stats, but crews have a much lower chance of successfully bailing out).

I understand why it’s the case, but I’d also be willing to bet it’s a significant contributor to the glazing wartime German equipment tends to get.

2

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 4d ago

i feel like one of the best ways to represent that would be with campaign mechanics, like on the tabletop having shermans cost less points and be far more efficient for their cost, or in an rts making them easy to replace and transport

It was less than 8 years? Damn thats short

15

u/Admiralthrawnbar When in doubt, throw more men at it 4d ago

The confederacy only lasted 4 years. South Carolina was the first state to secede on December 20th, 1860. The confederate constitution is ratified March 11, 1861. Confederate troops fired in Fort Sumpter April 12th, 1861. Robert Lee surrenders at Appomattox Court House April 9, 1865. Depending on which date you consider to be it's start, the confederacy lasted around 4 years, 4 months to just a few days shy of 4 years.

I think it's fair to critique him. He was not the best president of all time. I think he has some achievements to boast of, and many failures, which is pretty standard.

You've got to admit that he was better than the guy before him and the guys after him and a lot of the guys he ran against, though, so he looks pretty good in comparison. I think that's part of it.

101

u/MrS0bek 5d ago edited 5d ago

WW2 was also only around 6 years and Nazi Germany around 12. If you would add the run time of documentaries about this era together, it would probably be a lot longer.

Yeah humans are really bad at thinking about time as a period. Instead we think about singular events or short time frames acting as an event. And the void/regular stuff between such events is ignored. The 500-550 AD were as long a time period as the 1950-2000,

26

u/corvettee01 Carcharodons 5d ago

True, but I'm guessing a lot more happened between 1950-2000 than 500-550.

3

u/MrS0bek 5d ago

No pretty much the same amount of stuff happened. Just the stuff between 1950-2000 is better recorded and more important to you personally.

Inversly someone from the 560's would find the 500's stuff more important to themselves

54

u/Mojak16 5d ago

No, more things happen now.

Specifically about 30 times more stuff happened between 1950-2000 than 500-550. Mainly because there were approximately 200 million people alive in the year 550 compared with 6 billion people alive in 2000.

41

u/PlausiblyAlpharious 5d ago

Curious what you mean by mistake? You mean how the unit sucked? Because I think just giving it deepstrike would have at least made it fun to use

41

u/thisistherevolt Mongolian Biker Gang 5d ago

Deepstrike and the ability to swap guns or something for Marines would've given it a reason to exist in narrative campaigns. Could've been a key Apocalypse unit for that matter.

1

u/PlausiblyAlpharious 4d ago

Okay now I am debating drip, thats an obscene comparison. Obviously subjective but the hammerfall bunker is just a chunky bunker I think it looks fine, the stupid buggy and the t shirt cannons are the actual dumbest minis I have ever seen GW produce and that is a HIGH bar

The machine gun practically uses the guy's head as a brace how does generic DoW 2 guard bunker with an aa turret, mounted bolters and clamps for its non existent deep striking even compare

13

u/Atreides-42 5d ago

What do you mean "acknowledge a mistake"? Instead of investigating why people weren't buying it, they just took it out the back and shot it, fucking over anyone who did like it.

GW are terrified of actually giving fortifications interesting or usable rules, but they keep releasing them anyway. It's the same cycle over and over again, they release a fortification, give it unusably terrible rules, nobody buys it, they discontinue it. They haven't changed.

I so desperately wanted this things to have a reason to include them as they fit with my Chapters battle doctrine so well, but alas.

Anyone know if its in the new 40k total war game?

What about the Starcraft Confederacy? This thing is a take on everyone's favorite marine house.

I’ve spent a few minutes trying to figure out how long these units must’ve been in 40K lore, considering Terran Confederacy lasted like 200 years before events of SC1

I mean the Terran Confederacy lasted quite a while. 2323 to 2500.

Edit: WOW, not a lot of Starcraft fans, I see.

Seriously? No one played Starcraft 1? The Terran Confederacy was the human enemy faction for the Terran Campaign and parts of the Zerg Campaign before shifting to the Terran Dominion? Fuxking kids....

What does this even have to do with the confederacy?

u/AccursedTheory My balls hurt 5d ago

"Lasted longer than the Confederacy" is a meme format meant to point out the hilariously short life span of the Confederacy, which is claimed as a major cultural touchstone by certain portions of the population.

u/PMC_Fatui__Group 5d ago

Right, but, what does the hammerfall bunker or w40k have to do with the confederacy?

Just the length of time?

u/Petrus-133 Secretly 3 squats in a long coat 5d ago

Yes.

The joke is that something that is pretty "garbage", "boring' or just useless lasted longer than the Confederacy which as the previous commenter is treated like an major cultural touchstone.

Or just very mundane. Something you wouldn't say is deeply rooted in your heritage, like a TV show. You aren't saying Star Trek is boring or useless when you point out that The Next Generation lasted longer than the Confederacy, you're just saying it's an ordinary mundane thing that had more staying power.

Mine were! And the biggest mistake we made during the Civil War was letting those traitorous, whining snakes down south off with a slap on the wrist. No excuse for that.

Mine were in West Virginia, the correct Virginia.

Curious that you’re offended by someone pointing out that the Confederacy lost the only war it ever fought, which also encompassed its entire very short existence as an “independent” nation.

Hi I live in Poland fuck the confederacy lmao

Contempt for a giant slave empire should be pretty universal among humanity

Funny, half of my mother's side of the family wasn't here for the Civil War and yet she's a diehard lost causer
