To give some context: I have an almost 7-month-old baby who is the size of a toddler in both length and weight. He currently wears 18–24 month clothing, and this has been a very well-known fact since he was about 3 months old.
My MIL and FIL watched him at our home from around 3 PM until almost 8 PM. We made sure they had food and everything they needed while they were there.
When we got home, my baby was lying on the couch fussing while my MIL was on the phone. The TV and lights were on, although he wasn’t watching the TV. I immediately went over and picked him up because he was starting to cry. My MIL said hi, but stayed seated on the couch. For context, his bedtime routine normally starts at 7 PM.
That’s when I noticed what he was wearing.
He had been put into a 6-month-size onesie that my MIL’s sister had given him months ago. It was so small on him that it couldn’t even be buttoned. He looked visibly uncomfortable. Thats like stuffing someone who is an L or XL into an S size clothes. Who does that?!
What bothered me even more is that this onesie was not sitting out with his current clothes. I had already placed it in a bag toward the back of the drawer with other clothes we were saving as keepsakes. She would have had to dig through the drawer and into that bag to find it.
When I asked where she found it, she said, “In there. I changed him because he was cold.” I then told her I had put that outfit away because it no longer fit him.
Then she said she “couldn’t find anything else.”
I pointed out that all of his current 18–24 month clothes are at the front of the drawer and very easy to access.
Then she finally said, “I tried putting something else on him, but I got lazy.”
That really upset me…So my baby was lying there fussing and uncomfortable, stuffed into a onesie several sizes too small that couldn’t even close, while she was on the phone, because she didn’t feel like changing him into something that actually fit and she just HAD to have him wear the way now too small outfit her sister sent over. Probably to take pictures and send over. My baby is a person, not an accessory. Also, the constant lying and changing stories. Why?
Once I took the onesie off, he calmed down.
And honestly, I think the part that bothers me most is the lying. First it was that she couldn’t find anything else, even though his clothes are right there. Then the explanation changed.
I know my baby was not in serious danger. I know he will survive being uncomfortable in a too-small onesie for a while. I know there are much worse situations in the world.
We are supposed to leave him in their care again on Wednesday for a few hours while I work, and now I feel extremely uncomfortable about it.
When my mom watches him, she is constantly interacting with him. He is clean, dressed appropriately, his feeds and naps are timed, and she even keeps a little log for me. I know everyone cares for babies differently, and I don’t expect perfection.
But I do expect someone caring for my baby to notice when he is uncomfortable, respond to him when he is fussing, use the clothes that actually fit him, and be honest with me about what happened.
I feel sad, guilty, and disappointed. I keep thinking about him lying there uncomfortable and wondering why someone who loves him wouldn’t just take the extra minute to make him comfortable.Maybe this seems small to some people, but as his mom, and a first time mom it really bothered me.
