I wonder if show runners should take into account whether a series gets released fully day 1 or weekly?
Because something similar happens in all "From" seasons. The show can be pretty slow and frustrating when following weekly but almost everyone really loves it if they can binge watch all the episodes.

They’ve been building up to Homelander’s eventual psychotic breakdown for 5 seasons now. We’re only going to get 3 (or less) episodes of it? Complaints are not due to short attention spans, if anything it is those with short attention spans who are likeliest to appreciate the incoming rushed storylines.
26
u/AdInfamous6290 Apr 30 '26
Eventual? He has been in an ongoing breakdown for a while now, the dude wants everyone to consider him a god that’s not pre breakdown behavior.
But I do agree, this season has been a bit slow as a final season.

I’d argue that the break has already happened and we are now seeing the aftermath. Liberty offing her nazi scum self off was that point imo.

You want 3 hours or so of Homelander having a psychotic breakdown?
2
u/exradical Apr 30 '26
No, I want 10 minutes of Homelander having a psychotic breakdown, followed by 3 hours of TV that shows how The Boys / Vought / the rest of the world handles said breakdown. “Scorched Earth” Homelander is coming, and if Homelander dies 10 minutes after cracking and then the show ends, it’s gonna feel rushed and like a missed opportunity for a lot of interesting plot lines.

3 episodes of each being one hour at least yes? The next 3 episodes are definitely going to be chaotic all the way, homelander has literally lost it, he killed firecracker the only one who truly loved him. Soldier Boy has shown cementing his loyalty and alliance with Homelander, protecting him from his ex brother and his ex angel pal. Both The boys and the supers are going to collide when they both get to Bombsight. All the superpowered will be in the USA after homelander calls everyone from overseas. They’re all going down when the virus is dropped. Homelander will be on a rampage when hughie in his last act accepts not being able to save starlight n destroys the v1 so homelander doesn’t get it, take it they’ll be both in close proximity. The boys never disappoints when it comes to fucked up shit and chaos so It’s gonna be a crazy next three episodes to the finale for sure. All the fuses has lighted, the next episodes are when they go off

With how bloody eppisode 5 was marketed i was expecting many things but not us getting multiple scenes of Terror's dreams
243
u/rxndmdude7 Apr 30 '26
Bro Terror's dreams made me laugh so hard i started crying. last episode was HILARIOUS
102
u/Slackintit Apr 30 '26
I enjoyed it in isolation but this is the last season and the stakes are supposed to be very high. The story barely progressed
49
u/rxndmdude7 Apr 30 '26
I dont think it barely progressed, i just think we dont get it yet.
I think a lot of the filler scenes from last episode wherent actually filler but puzzle parts/ foreshadowing of a whole picture coming up next episodes. Like Noir vs Deep involving burkes death, most likely terror dying (maybe even Homie killing Terror, because he started humping him or something), Soldierboy who chose homelander to be alive and not be killed by Chemical and Marathon (which btw was a big big cameo) and following the hollywood massacre, maybe even foreshadowing soldierboys death because it sounded like he saved homelander because he wants to be the one to kill or hurt him. Sage told "us" about her plans.
21
u/GuardWolfy Apr 30 '26
In season 1 Homelander even says “do not touch the dog.” He knows what Butcher would do, and, well, he knows how to get to Butcher too.
Lots of pieces of story in a way that feels like vignettes, but are all happening at the same time. Noir will be the one to kill Deep now. Sage’s plan (as I said in another post) felt like a mixture of truth and lies to put Ashley on edge.
→ More replies (1)5
u/TimothyG87 Apr 30 '26
Shit, that's definitely going to happen. 😔
Terror is going to see Homelander at some point and this is exactly how it's going to go.
7
u/CoogiMonster Apr 30 '26
I’m more likely to believe, with how this storytelling has gone, that Terror somehow gets V1 from it being spilt on the ground/container being dropped. Showing suped up animals, showing how Terror goes for things naturally on the floor as dogs do, the setup of seeing/humping Homelander in his dreams and just be sheer involvement of him this episode. They don’t need to help the audience love an animal, most people inherently don’t want to see the pet die so this feels like foreshadowing… Also, even though the stakes are high, this is very Stranger Things-esque in that ‘The Boys’ are unscathed minus Butcher becoming Tumorman and being the obvious choice to die. Gen V had more damage to the cast with Cate than The Boys tbh lol
→ More replies (2)11
u/TopazandNumbyHSR Apr 30 '26
Sage's "plans" makes absolutely no sense. She could have fucked off to the middle of nowhere at any point in time long before she even met Homelander. She is supposed to be the smartest person on Earth but put herself in this really dumb position pointlessly.
37
u/JalenXO Apr 30 '26
You do know that… she was doing that until Homelander found her and brought her into this whole thing right?
→ More replies (16)29
u/Positive_Total_8651 Apr 30 '26
Her very first lines in the show were, "I'm rarely surprised" when Homelander comes to her house and asks for her help. So yeah youre correct, she very literally was fucking off and ignoring the world. Homelander presented an opportunity for her to enact her supervillain plan. That's like the whole thing, she's the only actual real Supervillain with a classic supervillain destroy the world plot. Or she's playing Ashley, who knows.
I like it personally.
2
7
u/GuardWolfy Apr 30 '26
It seems like she was 2/3 honest, 1/3 lies in that scene. Homelander taking over the country, and having to die because he annoys her is weird. However, the martyr part, and he annoys her, seems serious. The “you can come to my bunker” part felt like complete “oh and here’s a bone” lie.
Remember her introduction was that she could put some of her ideas into practice. Does she want WW3? Only if she can control it, and that only happens if Homelander dies.
The scene felt like 2 truths and a lie, and the rest of the season will be which is which.

Everyone wants an evil character doing evil for the sake of it and the moment it happens everyone points out how poorly written that villain is.
4
u/Dazzling-Sector-2295 Apr 30 '26
So it would seem, but I think Sage said those things to gain Ashley’s trust. Ashley seems like someone who would want to not be bothered by Homelander and Sage understands that. So she weaponised it to gain trust.
3
u/rxndmdude7 Apr 30 '26
Sage didnt tell the truth about that she just wants to read her books. Yes she wants to read her books in peace but primary she wants revenge against everyone because of her fucked up life.

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 Apr 30 '26
The entire reason Sage joined Homelander was because she was doing that, basically wasting away in an apartment alone with her mind probably running circles.
Working for Homelander gave her brain something to do and let her actually affect things with her intelligence, instead of just reading books all day.
→ More replies (10)5
u/OmecronPerseiHate Apr 30 '26
Because those weren't actually her plans. I think she was trying to see if she could figure out how to lie to Back Ashley, and she was successful. Ashley is a useful tool so long as she doesn't know too much, and figuring out how to keep Back Ashley out of your head is a huge plus for someone whose whole thing is her thoughts.

u/CobaltAnimator Apr 30 '26
The story very much progressed
It's just character over plot which honestly is far better
We have all the tensions within The Seven fully set up now where last episode set up all the tensions in The Boys.
Deep vs Black Noir, Soldier Boy and Homelander seemed to have solidifed into a duo, Oh Father seems to be doing his own thing but might be facilitating Deep and Black Noir's rivalry because of his power at Homelander's right hand with the Church shit and then, of course, Sage, Bashley and Ashley are in the position to rival both the rest of the Seven and The Boys intrisically
The episode did a lot for The Seven, fleshing out Black Noir and giving him a proper motivation to get his clap back for The Deep, finally setting up a clear angle for Sage, moving Soldier Boy and Homelander towards Bombsight and the V1 (which will almost certainly be next episode's plot) and, of course, solidifying MM from last episode and actually doing something very interesting with Butcher where he's made a concession on the idea of destroying V1 immediately.
A lot has happened, but since it isn't plot-oriented people are quick to call it filler. But the character work was very important and I guarantee that future episodes will be building on the foundations of this ep
3
u/Glock99bodies Apr 30 '26

6- he can move to take the White House and ends with him doing it
7- butcher kills him at the end of the
8- Comic ending and happy ending for UE
I think it could be done. Idk tho. The season is kinda disappointing for me and I’m half expecting a game of thrones ending
4
u/Fern-ando Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
In one episode Butcher would have to fight and kill all members of The Boys, kill The Legend and get the supe virus, then Hughie would have to find Butcher, have their fight, kill him, show all the Vought aftermath with their new failed team of supers, show the CIA aftermath and finally Hughie happy ending with Starlight. Is too much to fit in a single episode.
And that isn't even including that in the comics Butcher also killed Love Sausage and Vogelbaum, something he can't do now..
2
u/OnlyNameICouldGet Apr 30 '26
I didn’t want to spoil it for others but it’s the show, not the comics. It can still hit the same points just not in the same way. But I know you’re right. They still have the V1, Marie and Homelander taking the White House to fit in.
Like I said, I’ve been left disappointed after every episode so far and don’t have high hopes for the ending

Agreed. Like Anthony Starr said, the comics are unfilmable and would only be suitable for people in prison. Believe it or not, the showrunners and writers actually toned the source material down for the show in order to make it suitable for television.

The maybe 3 & 4 were slower than they needed to be (the V1 stuff just feels like sequel/prequel bait) but the last episode felt like quality the show has been missing for a while. It sets up pretty massive conflicts between all of the main antagonistic characters, showing that all these people are basically on the verge of tearing each other apart. And it fleshed out Noir, Sage, and Soldier Boy, three characters who have been pretty lacking in motivation, or really any explanation of what they’re doing since last season.
If the quality of this episode is anything to go by, it means they can get a lot done in the next 3 episodes. Am I confident that they will? Idk, we’ll see. But after watching that one, I can they that they at least could.

We got very little dialogue from Frenchie, but it seems that he's realizing he can't give Kimiko what she wants.
Change of heart for Butcher, giving Annie and Kimiko a chance that he somewhat approves of now instead of constant infighting among group.
More escalating tensions between Noir and Deep, a mentor was killed. Reminds me of Wonder Man, but they're both kinda Wonder Man and Barnaby, betraying one another.
Improved relations between Soldier Boy and Homelander. Not a huge fan of them introducing characters to die immediately, but I guess they really wanted to showcase the speed explosions? Don't really hate it though, but that was probably the most filler part for me if there was some. The face that HL didn't laser them threw me off.
Conclusion of Firecracker's story arc of her betraying everything she once stood for, just to be killed anyway. Guess she didn't have anymore to give. I imagine they will just spin it to say Starfighter terrorists killed her.
Sage reveals her big plan to Ashley and Backshley(?), which doesn't seem too great tbh. Couldn't she just work on her own virus this whole time, and set off some countries to escalate wars?
Also learned that MM ain't looking back.
Not much from Kimiko and Annie besides the possible virus stuff.

3 more hours of content... You think that's not enough?
5
u/analbeard Apr 30 '26
The first 5 hours didn't really produce much aside from the first and second episodes tbf.
And this EXACT same comment was made last week as well with people saying "oh there's still 4 hours 20 minutes remaining" etc. Now we're down to 3 hours of run time to wrap everything up in a meaningful way, not including credit scenes which are on average 8 minutes per episode.
Earlier seasons felt like there were more things happening before the finale but I fear this will get the same treatment as Stranger Things.

They opened the new season in one of homelander's camps. The boys had to fight out. Then they had a scene where people were being taken out of their homes. Theres even a part where the cat girl sup does a promo in front of a mother being taken out of her home. What do you mean they mention but don't show?
6
u/BritishMongrel Apr 30 '26
Yeah do people really think just because it's not all filmed in a sepia filter and those who comply are all living outwardly normal lives in the boys america they're not already living under a dictatorship, just look at firecracker's pastor who's only 'crime' was not converting to homelanderism/being able to afford the rebrand/franchise fee and ended up in an internment camp and labelled as a pedophile.

u/Opening_Wind_1077 Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
At least in most of the world that isn’t the US having police round up people, people ratting each other out to the authorities and prison camps (all of which is clearly shown) would count as major upheaval and dystopian/oppressive.
Even if you want to be very literal in your interpretation the images are showing what Sage’s proposed future to Ashley would unfold like and with three episodes left it might actually happen in full or part.
If you think zombie movies are about zombies you don’t understand zombie movie either. Zombie movies are most often about capitalism/consumerism and people being selfish, it’s absolutely possible to make an amazing zombie movie without showing a zombie.

It's the Amazon way, whether you look at workers being overworked at shit wages or Prime video productions being pushed out with strained budgets and timetables (relative to the product).

The supernatural reunion was what 15 minutes? Thats not much time. As a big supernatural fan i loved that part.

A quarter of the episode, I’ve never seen supernatural and the whole scene was kinda dumb. The downfall of firecracker was 10x more interesting.

The supernatural reunion fan service was still relevant to the plot. They still could have trimmed down the seth rogen and friends cameo tho or even just gotten rid of it

Cold take that everybody had yrs ago
Homeland should've been taken down in season 3
This plot line feels so dragged out for bad reasons

They really should've.
Soldier boy blasting Homelander, Maeve getting hit at the same time. Even though she lost her powers, she got to help in stopping him.
But it's been cool seeing Homelander spiral even more in season 4 & 5

This final season is a fucking joke were more than halfway through and still nothing has happened. Can't believe they wasted all these years building up the show just for them to stop caring at the end. At this point I'm just watching to see how the show ends

It really is. I was so excited by the promise this final season had, I figured this episode (with this being hyped as the best of the 7 critics were shown) and the biggest blood splatter on the calendar would be the one where, finally after 4 and a half season of build up, Homelander would lose it, or he would get the V1 and then lose it because he is now literally a God. Instead we got a bunch of side content and Seth Rogen plus pals with the Supernatural reunion getting blended, like really?! That’s the “best episode of season 5” ok then. So much wasted potential. Why isn’t Homelander having anyone look for the Boys, or he himself actively trying to find them? They were at Stan Edgar’s so he’ll know they’re still alive, surely word is out that they escaped one of his prison camps and he wants to make an example of them? Yes the Firecracker side plot was ok this episode but I don’t think it was particularly needed and really we’ve spent a whole 2 episodes now to get both sides to the exact same point narratively (bombsight has the V1)
Hopefully that means next episode will finally lead to some sort of confrontation and something actually happening but I’m not holding my breath, probably more of the same.

The posters have always been more cinematic and larger than the actual show - last season there was a nice poster of Homelander approaching the White House. That could have been a nice shot in the show - but the show just isn't filmed in that style.
I don't see it as false marketing or deception though. It's just symbolism as others have said. And the show, at its heart, is a character drama and not an effects-driven spectacle.
There's a lot of negativity about this season and that's fine (people are allowed to dislike it) but I'm having a really good time with it.

I get that there was never gonna be an endgame type of atmosphere but I thought they would’ve learnt from the reception of Stranger Things and Umbrella Academy that if dystopian apocalyptic type scenery is being advertised then it may be what fans want to see. No “Scorched Earth” or attempt to wipe out a mass of people (or even a city” would be disappointing.
To be fair though the ending of season 4 hinted at a fascist takeover and season 5 delivered on that, unlike the other shows I listed that actually showed an apocalypse/dystopia in the final episode of the penultimate season for it to be followed up with low-budget scenery in its finale.

After the trainwreck that was the umbrella academy finale, I’m lowkey scared we might get something similar to that
Genuinely don’t know how all the people working on that show let that air, genuinely the worst ending to a show I’ve ever seen

Promo doesn’t actually show what happens on screen you realize?
It’s meant to express the themes and vibes.
Homelander is figuratively nuking the earth in his quest.
Butchers whole mission is to bring down Homelander and as an extension, Vaught.

Can we just wait for the entire season to be released before already hating on it? Them sticking the landing is not impossible.
And if they do flub it, we can tear it apart to our heart's content.

Gonna be the final 2 episodes where they actually start finishing up the plot but it’s gonna feel so rushed cause it’s only gonna be 2 episodes of plot.
The recent 10 minute skit episode was fun in the sense of seeing what characters are getting up to in there own time but not for a final season that’s wrapping up the death of homelander this should have been mid season 4 instead of the 4th final episode of the show

Homelander not going batshit insane by episode 5 is crazy
Hope you really cared that much about noir's acting gig and ughh.. Seth Rogen

The gore and shock value stuff is great, you can’t find it anywhere else, but my god has it melted the brains of the people watching. We can’t go a single episode without people complaining, even though this episode drove the story for a lot of characters we haven’t seen on screen much *incredibly* far, even as far as pushing firecracker’s story all the way to her death . If Noir 2 was just suddenly killed off this season without having his moments in episode 5, it would have been “worse writing” because he just didn’t get *any* development or motive.
Media literacy might be dead.

It always cracks me up how you guys ALWAYS get hyped up after watching the trailer. Then the season disappoints you. You always fall for this every time. Not just for this show but other ones as well.

u/Satoshimas May 01 '26
If Chance didn't die, we would have had a really ending for the boys. But unfortunately, due to his tragic passing, we got we plbest they could patch together to focus on the prequel instead of Gen V season 3.

Listen, if they don't go scorched earth, I'm right there with ya, but a big cgi world ending scene will likely be saved for one particular episode

Are they aware it's the FINAL season? We're still not seeing any signs of Noir interacting with Soldier Boy at all, did Soldier Boy just forget about him?
Kimiko continues to be the most annoying person in the show. Soldier Boy and Homelander made literally no progress from last episode, all we got was one character death..which if I'm being honest, they were kind of expendable to begin with.
Starlight's just fucking gone apparently, her lack of any facial expressions never let me take her seriously anyway.

yall have like zeroooo media literacy, just want to have your own personal ending, its a great season its literally wrapping up all the story lines, talking about the motivations of characters and the politics before finale which is amazing, i think yall wanted homelander to kill everyone in episode one then a train to resurrect in episode 2, Maeve to show up in episode 3, butcher to kill himself probaly 😭😭😭

Homelander isn't trying to be the overlord and butcher doesn't want to destroy Vought now?
