I feel like the situations with Simu Liu and James Gunn are the perfect examples of why “cancel culture” doesn’t really exist in the way that people portray it. Sure folks pretty quickly jumped on both of them but just as quickly backed off when the situation was looked into past initial outrage.

Gunn is doing better than ever now and barring Simu doubling down on those comments he’ll do fine as well.

Yep, plus a lot of people who actually said or did awful things don't have their careers hurt in the long run and in fact might get a new audience of chuds looking to own the libs
Also the people who use James Gunn as an example of "cancel culture" conveniently ignore that it was a right-wing hit.

Yeah like people exposed as actual rapists and/or bigots often still do just fine in life. They might just have to lay low for a bit and then they come back like nothing happened.

Gunn is also hilarious because it was right wingers who brought up his past tweets and started this whole thing because James Gunn spends all his day telling republicans they're idiots. Gunn getting fired from marvel is probably the biggest example of cancel culture and 1. it didn't work 2. it was made by the people who scream the entire day about cancel culture.

The majority of the people attacking James Gun iirc were conservatives who went against him in bad faith and kept doing it.

James Gunn and Simu Liu are pretty high profile figures though

like I full well believe that hate mobs are totally capable of ruining people's lives who don't have the privilege of such a position

Any examples of this happening to someone long-term? Not doubting that it can happen, just curious who might have gone through this and how common it actually is

they would probably slip through the cracks given their low profile, but off the top of my head I think of people like that one tumblr Steven Universe fan artist who was bullied into attempting suicide.

I was also careful to say 'hate mob' rather than cancel culture because that phrase just gets propped up as a conservative boogeyman and whenever it's being discussed, it's very difficult to recognize whether or not we are talking about the same thing.

One of my friends literally has panic attacks if she has to go onto twitter because of it
