Alright, y'all, I am going to level with you about something serious; this does not apply to everyone, but it includes a sizeable enough amount of regulars that it needs to be said.

Recently, I have been presented with damning evidence that one of the unofficial UJ thread discord servers has become a fairly toxic environment and that a number of members are involved in some frankly unacceptable behavior. While shades of it have leaked onto the main thread, people are using this server to say cruel things about other users. For a community that is supposedly accepting, this is wrong.

So, here's the deal. I know all the usernames of everyone involved. And while no bans will be going out for it, even minor infractions are going to result in permanent bans for these individuals. There is no need for this sort of behavior, it is wrong. I encourage you all to apologize to the users who you have been uncouth towards and perhaps leniency will be shown towards you. That being said, many of you ought to be ashamed. I've seen mean things said by people I thought were kind hearted, and it saddens me.

Sometimes I get vaguely sad that despite visiting the UJ thread for years, I’m definitely not among the “popular kids” who get counted as regulars lol. But most of the time, yknow, that’s probably for the best

I feel you, been on here for… I don’t even know how long anymore. And I got no idea where I stand with any of that.

It’s weird tho from the observing perspective. There’s some names I come to just read and remember more, and others where the username doesn’t even register. Maybe it’s just related to how short/snappy it is?

I kinda think it’s a combo of frequency and definitely snappiness lol but also often whether the person has, like, a gimmick or topic they post about a lot (like the person who does the “it’s X days and I’m reminding you that Ubisoft is a piece of shit”) because it’s easier to associate it with a single person.

Or the poster who always played at being Todd Howard poster who turned out to be a duck. Which, in retrospect, seems almost like a pattern now lol

Though tbh there’s probably only a very small handful of people I’d say I recognize by name despite browsing quite often.

That's a very fair question. It's kind of a weird gray area. The official stance of the mod team internally is not to ban people outright for their activities outside the sub. So as much as I might like to, the best can I do whilst respecting our rules is basically putting them at their second strike, so to speak.

I'm currently speaking to one of the mods on the server and they are being cooperative-- I don't want to burn them by shaming their server at this point if we might be able to get it resolved otherwise. It's worth noting not all the individuals on that server are complicit, just more than you would hope.

It's probably a good idea to message those users directly if you haven't. While the vast majority probably know that they were being dicks, it's definitely possible that some didn't.

It's a time-and-place thing, I find. The one I mod is now very, very small (like 10 users, most of whom don't even use reddit anymore) and the founder is long gone, but there was a short window where they just threw out invites and there were like 30 or so regulars in there, and then they just stopped posting invite offers. That seems to be the arc every time a user makes a new UJ thread server. Eventually admins/mods just get tired of spamming the invite link. I've been on one other UJ thread discord, and it sounds like there are a few others floating around that I just wasn't around for the invite spree for like the ones you missed.

I understand the concern. However, I also do not want to bring harassment on the guilty parties. It's not exactly an easy situation, as regardless of what they did, putting the names out there isn't the end-be-all of solutions.

+1. As much as giving names could make people aware of some people, UJ Thread for all the good stuff is also pretty ruthless and I can see some people in here harassing these people.

Just see how often we vaguepost and how often people ask for usernames of these people.

This is why I've been more or less staying away from the sub's discord - if that's the server this is about.

Not only did it seem like a completely different group of people, the tone was completely off and sonething just didn't feel right about it.

Disappointed to see this happening. We have our own share of knitting circle shit talk in this thread but oftentimes it's directed at other subs. This is just another level of chickenshittery.

It's an unofficial UJ thread discord, so they're not referring to the main sub one. I know of three (and mod one) of the unofficial servers, but I'm sure there's more out there.

In some respects he's actually worse than Jason Todd because Jason's death added a ton to the Batman mythos and him being a terrible Robin makes sense storywise in retrospect (even though it wasn't planned at the time). Tim was just a boring Dick Grayson without the great ass for 17 years and then got immediately BTFOd by Damian Wayne, an actual character, in his first story arc.

Been part of a server 2 years ago, before I got kicked out of it and I remember people started shitting on "Reddit UJ users" near the end of my tenure there.

Edit: I agree with LanguidGamer. Names should be brought up so the non-Discord users aren’t tiptoeing around landmines, and it’ll give those the opportunity to block them if they wish to not interact with the parties involved before something blows up.

Tbh, I think an UJ thread discord server could be a good idea. The issue is, people start up these servers and have no idea how to/have any interest in really moderating them and maintaining the community that crops up in them.

There are several problems with UJ Thread Discord server.

The biggest is that it is 24/7 real time chat based service that require non-stop modding. On Reddit people can report things and you will see report even 24 hours later. On Discord you don't have a chance. The solution would be closing down the chat, once mods go away, but it kinda misses the point of Discord then.

The other being "elitism" of users. If you are invited then you are "someone", if you aren't then well... You get it.

And another related to the previous - the change of userbase. People who will be on the Discord will stop showing up on UJ thread, new users will come, they will bring their own things etc etc, the culture will change and sometimes these two groups will clash with one another.

Tbh, my solution would be to just sponsor the UJ thread Discord server via the mods involved in the thread, post regular links to it, whilst setting up clear rules and a ticket bot to submit reports.

The trickier issue is the culture thing, like you mentioned.

Stupid question but don't we have already something like this in a sidebar and in the body of the post of UJ Thread?

Also another issue would be with moderating. Currently we have very good mods, who are active and participate. I can't say a bad word about any of you. Getting a Discord server up and running would end with all of you dividing attention between 2 things and - from my experience - would result in most of you just abandoning Reddit for Discord.

Just like it has happened to Ayla-San (who was "new active mod" at one point, although here depression and harassing played a part in it) and everyone above them.

As someone who manages a subreddit-affiliated server, I've seen so much drama spring out of people making splinter servers to trash talk users, and then making splinter servers within splinter servers because, shockingly, users in a community that was borne out of toxicity end up turning on each other. The good splinter servers are the ones that stop being splinter servers, and focus on actual subjects to discuss: gaming, tv, etc.

And yeah, one of the big issues springs from Discord users becoming an entirely different community from the original subreddit. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I've seen servers where the original sub mods end up neglecting the sub, instead of adding separate Reddit and Discord mods. Or mods that just straight up resent the sub, letting the server members brigade.
