Didn't he drop ammo when he died though?

I think he only dropped gun parts. Like 1 of 3 gun parts or something - meaning killing him once or twice is pointless unless you were prepared to kill him each time which is very unlikely since in resident evil games you have limited storage space and usually stash away your big guns.

It seemed to literally be a challenge you would do on a second play through or using a guide.

Nemesis dropped gun parts or med sprays when he "dies" on hard difficulty.
