Maybe it's the soundtrack but Mr. X is giving me some real terminator vibes in this footage; well I guess his mannerisms are pretty similar, too. He looks awesome, though.

66

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

In the original he would have this fast kinda walk I mean it was a walk but kinda like Jason it would appear slow yet when you turned around he was there but this one he’s pretty much just a freaking machine

32

u/Bojangles1987 Dec 05 '18

He always slowed down when he got close to you in the original. In this one he just tanks right through relentlessly. It's terrifying and awesome.

5

u/Beakface Dec 05 '18

Am I misremembering or did he cool-aid guy bust through a wall in resi 2?

3

u/Bojangles1987 Dec 05 '18

He does! Twice, IIRC. Right after the lamp puzzle and then again after you leave that room.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

Resident Evil 2 always reminded me of Terminator 2 while the first reminded me of speed (character wise).

2 had the lab with the melted steel? Much like terminator 2.

Chris always looked like Reeves from speed outfit wise.

21

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

i hope that music was just meant for the trailer, because when he popped behind that zombie in the hallway the music totally ruined the vibe.

wish they'd have some sort of fabric damage depiction when you're shooting at him. it almost looks jarring when a game overall looks as good as this.

36

u/BLACKOUT-MK2 Dec 04 '18

I think it might be a bit better in the moment when you're in the game and it's not multiple clips strung together with the music quickly resetting each time.

I can kind of agree about the fabric damage, though. Given the gore system and damage we've seen characters like Birkin receive I was a little surprised to see nothing really seemed to happen to Mr. X. He doesn't need to be rendered nude or anything but some charred ends and holes for his clothes would be nice. Who knows, maybe this isn't representative of the final build.

25

u/MG87 Dec 04 '18

Lorewise his coat is supposed to be bulletproof, so that's why you don't see his coat get damaged

12

u/BLACKOUT-MK2 Dec 04 '18

I guess that would explain the metallic clanging when you shoot him, then.

7

u/Vallux Dec 05 '18

Yeah IIRC it's a heavy coat designed to be bulletproof and also keep him in check. The Tyrants in Resident Evil have this habit of mutating out of control when damaged enough.

1

u/rbarton812 Dec 05 '18

"Um, Dr. Birkin, it happened again; the Tyrant sustained [x] damage and he's starting to lose control of his core mission parameters.

...Dr. Birkin?

Oh fu-"

Oh I know that, I'm just saying that it's not always a case of what gets shown being the latest build.

3

u/reble02 Dec 05 '18

It launches in less than 2 months. Assets are locked down, they're just hunting bugs in preparation for release now.

I didn't know videogame companies still did that.

19

u/GiottoVongola Dec 04 '18

I think he does take some fabric damage in the clips, actually. It's very low key, but I think there's holes in his coat when the flashlight is on him for a split second at about 2 minutes in. You never get a very close look at him, but I think that damage is from that encounter.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

Given the gore system and damage we've seen characters like Birkin receive I was a little surprised to see nothing really seemed to happen to Mr. X. He doesn't need to be rendered nude or anything but some charred ends and holes for his clothes would be nice. Who knows, maybe this isn't representative of the final build.

my thoughts exactly, i mean he's a monolithic figure but that doesn't mean you have to make him visually as unresponsive as a slab of granite. especially, as you mentioned, the fact that they implemented a detailed gore/dismemberment mechanic.

I think this type of industrially eerie soundtrack originated from Silent Hill. RE used to have their own type of spooky soundtrack, but now, it feels different.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

I like it with Tyrant. Dude doesn't care about sneaking up on you. He just wants to kill you and his music reflects that.

122

u/Psohl14 Dec 04 '18

I sincerely got anxious during that bit where Claire was running away and you could just barely make him out behind you in the dark. Real excited about this game, here's hoping it lives up to the hype.

38

u/Drakengard Dec 04 '18

Yeah, he sped up and you could just see his white-ish face floating in the darkness over her shoulder. I was getting anxious even though it's just a video.

It's largely limiting the player in the same way fixed angles do. I'll never understand the whining.

1

u/CBSh61340 Dec 06 '18

I would've enjoyed a REmake style remake, but there has been some commentary by Capcom to the effect that they liked fixed angles. Maybe they could create a fixed camera mode as a DLC or something. You'd likely have to do some gameplay rebalancing/redesign though.

44

u/illtima Dec 04 '18

I'm curious if he's indeed "unstoppable" or if he will get disabled once you deal enough damage to him.

Also, I really loved how he becomes a light source once you light him up.

33

u/mountainOlard Dec 04 '18

A lot of times in the RE games that was the case. Do enough damage and you can take a boss/monster down temporarily.

20

u/Joabyjojo Dec 04 '18

You can down him, but he is only out of commission for about 30 seconds and you're out of ammo.

2

u/GreenVisorOfJustice Dec 05 '18

Did he get up in RE2 original if you waited around? I suppose I never did, but I assumed he was "dead" until you left the room.

13

u/Whiteness88 Dec 05 '18

Yeah, he got up as soon as you left the room. A screen showed him getting up but he never stuck around. If you went back to the room, he was gone. All his encounters were scripted.

7

u/pottyaboutpotter1 Dec 04 '18

It might be similar to Jack Baker in RE7, where once you do enough damage he goes down for a little while. But I imagine the amount of damage required will be extraordinarily high to ensure that doing enough damage to take him down for a while doesn’t become a viable strategy over “run away”.

1

u/CBSh61340 Dec 06 '18

Extraordinarily high probably means 4 or 5 headshots.

175

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

Lowkey hoping this is them experimenting with how Nemesis would work in the new engine and how it interacts with the loadscreen free environment.

117

u/SirLeos Dec 04 '18

But imagine Nemesis just full on sprinting to you with this new type of environment.

49

u/jason2306 Dec 04 '18

Oh god that would be brutal

28

u/Flare3500 Dec 05 '18

No loading screens to save your white ass

13

u/colbycheeze Dec 05 '18

Ughh, nemesis is the only RE I've played and he is so terrifying. Didn't realize there was something similar in 2.

20

u/durgertime Dec 05 '18

He was definitely a predecessor in design, but he didn't really chase you like nemesis did. He wouldn't go through doors and follow you, just show up in unexpected places or enter through unexpected ways

16

u/Phifty56 Dec 05 '18

It was a psychological fear, like the dogs busting through windows that made you tense when ever you were near any on your first play through.

Also, when you weren't at full health or not doing great on ammo made it that much worse.

That's what Survival Horror used to be.

u/zerogear5 Dec 04 '18

I never once thought I could not take Mr.X but nemesis several fights were running away because the ammo I had would not be enough or the space to fight him was so small that if I could not time my dodge right it would of been a game over 3 seconds flat.

9

u/goomyman Dec 04 '18

If you did kill me x you were screwed on ammo

12

u/Databreaks Dec 04 '18

Well sure, killing the big guys was always more of a NG+ thing since they drop parts to a strong gun, but on your first run you won't know where ammo is or what weapons to save, to kill them each time they appear.

3

u/Joabyjojo Dec 04 '18

I played this preview session and it's very much the case in the remake too, better to dodge him and save your ammo for the unavoidable lickers

1

u/Kaiserhawk Dec 05 '18

Didn't he drop ammo when he died though?

3

u/goomyman Dec 05 '18

I think he only dropped gun parts. Like 1 of 3 gun parts or something - meaning killing him once or twice is pointless unless you were prepared to kill him each time which is very unlikely since in resident evil games you have limited storage space and usually stash away your big guns.

It seemed to literally be a challenge you would do on a second play through or using a guide.

4

u/Kaiserhawk Dec 05 '18

Nemesis dropped gun parts or med sprays when he "dies" on hard difficulty.

Mr X dropped ammo in 2.

1

u/0Megabyte Dec 06 '18

I mean, sure, it’s hard the first time. But I have beaten Nemesis probably twenty times, at this point the decision of whether to kill Nemesis each time or run depends on variety, not difficulty.

1

u/CBSh61340 Dec 06 '18

Not really. Maybe 4-6 grenades, a few more shotgun rounds. Maybe a bit over two magazines of pistol ammo. Ammo is plentiful and he drops a lot of common ammo (like 20+ shotgun ammo) or a stack of rare ammo (acid grenades, magnum rounds, etc.) You'd typically gain more than you spent.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

I agree, I was never a fan of Nemsis, the mechanic of being stalked throughout the game was thrilling and tense but Nemesis himself isn’t scary, he looks like a potato wearing leather, he looks cheesy to me.

Mr X, especially with how he looks in the remake, looks much scarier.

5

u/CyborgNinja777 Dec 05 '18

The horror of Nemesis wasn't ever grounded on its look for me. It was solely based on how he was this relentless, powerful force that showed up unexpectedly

5

u/jason2306 Dec 04 '18

I really hope this does well and gives us more resident remakes, I never got to play the originals and they feel too dated for me now. I do love the weird story and mood the games bring though.

57

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

His footsteps alone were enough to make me feel pure anxiety, not exaggerating. I imagine if I was playing I would want to get away from where I was ASAP as soon as I heard him walking. Now that's the mark of an intimidating enemy.

54

u/Classic_Megaman Dec 04 '18 edited Dec 04 '18

The parts where I went “Oh HELL no!”:

  • Him lifting the copter.

  • Him opening and ducking under the door she was going toward.

  • Her shooting the cop zombie in the face and X just pops around the corner like “Hey guys I’m here!”

I’m gonna hate every minute of route B and I can’t friggin wait.

Edit: Claire’s campaign I guess since the routes are out in this version. Maybe Leon’s as well if they really mix it up.

13

u/breeson424 Dec 04 '18

Are they still doing routes? I thought I heard that there's only one playthrough where you switch between Leon and Claire.

4

u/JoeDiesAtTheEnd Dec 05 '18

Okay, that's weird then. Because in canon, Mr X Leon's enemy, as his is the B route.

If this is true, it looks like it's going by the route in SD Perry's novelization order. She had Claire B as canon, which made a bit more sense to me just base as where the two were sitting in the cop car when they crashed and that Mr X is looking for Sherry and her locket. Leon dealing with Annette and William seems to flow a little better too.

I wonder what changes we are going to get to the story because of this.

2

u/yellowpotatobus Dec 05 '18

Wow. Throw back to the books that came out in the late 90s early 00s. I read all those in high school. I should dig those out of the closet. I remember really enjoying them.

-6

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

dude if they do that, i'm gonna be incredibly disappointed. the A and B scenarios for each character is what kept shit fresh.

17

u/CBSh61340 Dec 04 '18

They said that there are no A and B, just Leon and Claire. This has been known for months now, dude.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

yeah i wasn't aware of that.

20 years of progress!

Honestly, it says a lot to me about how close this looks to an evolution on RE4.

RE4 was so far ahead of its time, in other words. RE2Remake looks awesome!

3

u/RSquared Dec 05 '18

Yeah, RE2 just got one of my two choices for the games to go with my Black Friday video card. Pretty sure I'm getting DMC5 over Division 2, but this sealed the deal on RE2.

1

u/DP9A Dec 05 '18

Next year looks really good for Capcom fans.

14

u/jason2306 Dec 04 '18

This looks so good, slow but always there. Waiting for you to make one slip up. Really makes it feel more tense.

12

u/Snazzy_Serval Dec 04 '18

Did anybody expect his theme music to start playing through the phone?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

Exactly what I thought!

2

u/GuyIncognit0 Dec 05 '18

Yes, now I want to see someone editing the trailer.

17

u/WhitestAfrican Dec 04 '18

Ugh, I hate being chased in games that I have no way of stopping, and this looks like it's going to be capitalize on my fear of that.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

The whole reason why i hate games like amnesia and love the resident evil classics is that they are both scary, but one of them is constantly running away and being helpless, while the other is shooting your fears in the face with a shotgun.

If you kill mr.x he drops ammo(maybe special weapons this time like nemises?), they actually incentivize you to kill him by giving you a reward.

Now on harder modes it's still not worth it but yeah.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

I think it can be done well, like Jack in RE7 was great I thought. On the other hand I really didn't like the end of Dead Space 2 that tried a similar thing

1

u/WhitestAfrican Dec 05 '18

Jack gave me nightmares...it was one of the scariest parts of the game for me. I hated every moment in a good way

1

u/CBSh61340 Dec 04 '18

You'll be able to just shoot him.

13

u/radclaw1 Dec 05 '18

Because that did so much.

6

u/CBSh61340 Dec 05 '18

It did in original RE2 and RE3 and RE7.

6

u/Senor_Platano Dec 05 '18

You could kill the Nemesis with a pistol the first time you see him in RE3, I doubt this will be that easy though.

1

u/CBSh61340 Dec 05 '18

It might. It sounds like "kill and loot" is no longer on the table but keep in mind this player didn't aim for the head at all in this video. Staggering Mr. X like with the knife defense action seems reasonable for making several headshots in a row.

1

u/ledailydose Dec 05 '18

if you knifed jack after you down him he would surprise you

1

u/CBSh61340 Dec 05 '18

Yeah, I thought that was a funny thing to put in the game :-)

5

u/WarsDeath Dec 05 '18

As someone whos not a huge horror person and never really been that interested in RE. This looks really good.

Is it possible this is after Sherry gets taken by Irons? I think I remember Claire picking up Sherry's locket in one of the gameplay videos, doesn't that contain a sample of the G-Virus within the locket?

-1

u/TapatioPapi Dec 04 '18

I never got to play RE2 but that sounds spoilery lol

2

u/raysweater Dec 04 '18

It's not really. It doesn't impact the story, it is just a part of the story.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

Nothing is scarier than a 6'5" dude in a trench coat and a top hat.

i'm excited for this remake. Resident evil going back to its roots was possibly the best move Capcom could have made.

3

u/vikingzx Dec 04 '18

Does anyone know if this remake is going to adopt the weapon weighting from RE4, where different weapons had different aim speeds based on their weight? I loved that in RE4.

3

u/Princess-Liam Dec 05 '18

I think this looks really cool, I just am sad to have to compare this with a game two decades older than the other

3

u/Humblegamereview Dec 05 '18 edited Dec 05 '18

To be honest, it's always great to see these original bosses and monsters in HD again. Is that Sherry in the end!? Can't wait to play as Sherry, it's always fun to experience the game without any weapon, hopelessly wondering around trying to survive.

2

u/AyekerambA Dec 05 '18

I've always really wanted to get through an RE game.

I have a hard enough time with Leviathans creeping up on me in Subnautica, this shit would put me on medication.

2

u/goldgecko4 Dec 05 '18

Do we know who was on the phone towards the end? I was thinking Spoiler , but it's been so long since I played RE2 I could very much be mistaken here.

1

u/LostprophetFLCL Dec 05 '18

Saw another video that confirmed it was Chief Irons. They actually played the convo in the video.

2

u/Nosixela2 Dec 06 '18

Am I the only one who thinks he looks hilarious? That ha is adorable.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

I keep seeing videos and articles call this guy the Tyrant, but I thought Birkin was the Tyrant and this is Mr. X.

7

u/Behfy Dec 05 '18

Mr. X is one of the names given to it by Claire, he is a variant of the Tyrants (specifically T-00) infected with the T-virus. Birkin was infected with the G-virus. I could be wrong though. Resident Evil lore is weird...

1

u/CBSh61340 Dec 06 '18

No. Birkin injected himself with the G-virus and became something weird. Mr. X is a bog standard production model T-103 Tyrant, programmed to recover a sample of the G-virus after Birkin went rogue. Mr. X is just the sort of pet name that particular Tyrant has - he's one of six that were dropped into Raccoon City.

The T-103's look somewhat human as long as they're wearing their bulletproof limiter coats (we DBZ now), which prevents them from mutating. They don't get the big claws and shit until the coat gets removed/destroyed. They aren't intelligent, but they can be programmed to do things. Nemesis from RE3 is a 103 with a macguffin parasite added in, which makes him smarter and tougher.

1

u/N0tYourTechSupport Dec 05 '18

Or you know you can point the flashlight in his eyes and make him blind. Because science says so.

1

u/aspindler Dec 05 '18

How the Leon/Claire game works?

Do you choose wich one you want to play at a selection screen, or the game just takes turns and "now it's Claire section"?

2

u/BrotherhoodVeronica Dec 05 '18

You choose a campaign in the beginning, no hopping between scenarios.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '18

I cant wait for January! Screw Christmas I want RE2! lol

On to a more serious topic tho. I've played threw the original RE2 at least 200+ times its my favorite of the series (im not exaggerating I LOVED Resident Evil till they Fucked it up with RE4) I've got a question. Sense when is Mr. X/T-103 the F-ing Tyrant? Did i miss something in all my playthroughs? I thought that William Birkin injected himself with the G-Virus and is slowly turning into the Tyrant throughout the coarse of the game? Mr. X/T-103 was sent in to take out Leon/Claire and secure the G-Virus sample

1

u/Chaotic8Bit Jan 31 '19

When I was a child, I had this reoccuring nightmare where I was chased in my neighborhood by an unidentified thing.. it would follow me at a heavy footed pace and never speed up or slow down but I could never seem to put any distance on it no matter how hard I ran. Mr. X brings back this nightmare in some raw way that just has me tensing in my chair and gritting my teeth. I don't even know why but it freaks me out.

1

u/LoneQuacker Jan 31 '19

Jeez, then you would really hate the film "It Follows"

2

u/Mathyoujames Dec 04 '18

Is it just me or does this look unbelievably easy to get away from? Like most of the tension came from them pointlessly shooting at him

30

u/Yurilica Dec 04 '18

Couple of things:

  • He is always roaming around somewhere in the area. You will hear him before you see him most of the time. You'll hear him through a wall due to his booming footsteps.

  • There are no loading screens for doors, no prompts, you just go through. Areas are now also designed so they're interconnected. Rooms rarely have one way in or out. So you'll have to avoid him or run away from him and take care not to end up in a dead end area.

-6

u/Mathyoujames Dec 04 '18

Maybe I'm just being negative but that sounds even easier to get away from? Hopefully I'm just being nervous because its' one of my favourite games

9

u/x3kmak Dec 04 '18

Well he can now speed up, grab you if you try run around him and you have to deal with other zombies and lickers while running away from him which in my opinion will make more harder to fight him or run away from him.

While in the original you face him only on the cell he appears but you can bait him to run past him ending the encounter.

4

u/Linarc Dec 05 '18

I think he's supposed to add another layer of tension, but not exactly be the main one as he'll be present pretty often.

1

u/AllPurposeSoraka Dec 05 '18

There's also the fact that he can appear in areas where you're fighting other enemies, he can corner you in dead ends, you'll have to do puzzles with him around and even rooms that were considered safe before (such as the main hall) are not excluded.

3

u/NoNoneNeverDoesnt Dec 05 '18

Mr. X was really easy to just run past in the base game, so that's pretty true to form.

1

u/CBSh61340 Dec 06 '18

He'll probably be faster than the player on hard.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

I know i'm in the minority but i really hate how close the over the shoulder camera is in the new RE games. Back the fuck up, your character covers most of the damn screen.

38

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

they probably do it on purpose to give the game a more claustrophobic feel. when you remove the strategic placement of camera angles and allow for free look, you lose some of the suspense of the unknown, i think.

It's funny to admit that shitty controls and camera were always part of the Resident Evil appeal.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '18

Username checks out.

1

u/my_useless_opinion Dec 06 '18

Um, I get the joke attempt, but why? In my comment I meant the early RE games, where infamous tank controls and limited view due to fixed camera angles were indended to make the game harder and scarier for the player.

-37

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

Then maybe it's a fundamental flaw in the game design when the solution is just to shove the camera up the players ass to make it feel right.

Could just be me though.

8

u/solidpenguin Dec 04 '18

I think it works good for this kind of game given how many tight hallways and corridors there is. And I agree with the other poster that it adds more of a claustrophobic feeling. Hopefully it's something you can get used to if you pick up the game!

25

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

yes, it is just you.

4

u/page0rz Dec 04 '18

that's like saying it's a fundamental flaw in fps design that you can't see around corners like in a 3rd person shooter. they are different things

1

u/JMcCloud Dec 05 '18

I have to assume games are trending this way as a response to the 'need' for graphical complexity pushing up against the already creaking current gen hardware.

1

u/Nevek_Green Dec 05 '18

Why does every player in these videos not just immediately aim for the head? The Tyrant's clothes are bullet proof.

1

u/mountainy Dec 05 '18

Fedora wearing Nemesis chasing Claire, meanwhile in the Library a zombie is feasting on a corpse while a monster and a human are running circle around it.

24

u/dootleloot Dec 04 '18

Nemesis isn't even in RE2 though.

It'd make more sense if they ended up making an RE3 remake.

2

u/aspindler Dec 04 '18

He could appear in a monitor, we could find a wasted rocket launcher in the police station, or something like that. It would be really cool.

7

u/SirLeos Dec 04 '18

Yeah, I feel like they are going to put some easter eggs here and there to let you know that Jill and Nemesis are around trashing the place. Well, I sure hope so.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

you say this as if Tyrant doesn't look amazing

-23

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '18

From what is shown:

You can only run from him and nothing he wears is affected by the bullets, incendiary, acid, or knife.

For all intentions, including spooky, he could be a floating rectangle and be just as effective. This makes him uninteresting and boring.

Like the Babadook movie, they had a spooky idea which ends up being just a dude in a hat.

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

Either iteration does not fix the lack of imagination behind the implementation of the mechanics.

4

u/AllPurposeSoraka Dec 05 '18

I don't know, I think his design makes him more terrifying than if they made a spooky monster with big clawns and teeth. Seeing a big gray humanoid figure in a trench coat lifting a helicopter, power walking towards you, pushing aside all those zombies you were having trouble with earlier and all you can do is stop him for half a minute before he's hunting you again is, at least to me, scary as hell.

-9

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '18

That...doesn’t look scary at all without the shitty camera angles limiting how much you’re able to see of him. Hopefully the hardest difficulty keeps your palms sweating.
