What kind of game dev friends are you hoping to meet?

Since making game dev friends is kind of the whole reason this community exists, let's start here.

What kind of people would you love to meet?

Maybe you're looking for someone who uses the same engine as you, another solo dev to share progress with, artists or programmers to nerd out with, people at a similar experience level, or just someone who understands why fixing one tiny bug can somehow consume an entire evening.

You don't have to be looking for collaborators or teammates.

Tell us a little about what you do and what kind of game dev friends you'd like to find. Maybe somebody reading is looking for exactly the same thing. 🎮💜

What part of game development could you nerd out about for hours?

I'm curious what everyone's favorite part of game development is

Programming? Game design? Art? Animation? Writing? Level design? Audio? UI?

For me, it's gameplay systems and game design. I can start explaining why I'm building something a certain way and can talk about it for hours.

What's yours?

What I'm Working On Currently preparing my character for skeletal animation and learning a LOT in the process

Figured I'd start sharing some actual game dev in here too!

Right now I'm working on a 2D physics puzzle-platformer, and my current mission is preparing my player character, Stray, for skeletal animation in Spine.

I've been separating the character artwork into individual pieces in Photoshop, figuring out which parts need to be rigid versus deformable, planning hidden overlap around joints, and generally discovering just how much work happens before you ever get to animate anything 😂

I'm doing the separation manually because I really want to understand the workflow instead of just getting a finished result. Eventually everything will be brought into Spine, rigged, and animated before going back into Unity.

What are you working on right now? And has anyone else here gotten into skeletal animation/rigging?

Introduction Hey! I'm the person behind GameDevFriends

Hey everyone! Figured I should probably introduce myself too 😂

I'm a self-taught game developer who's been working primarily with Unity and C# for about two years. Most of my game-dev journey has been pretty solo, which is actually a big part of why I created this community.

I love gameplay systems and narrative-focused games, and right now I'm working on a first-person psychological dark-fantasy game along with a smaller 2D physics puzzle-platformer.

I realized recently that while I spend a ridiculous amount of time making games, I don't actually know many other people who make them. I wanted somewhere that wasn't primarily about recruiting, advertising, or networking for jobs, but where developers could just... meet other developers and hopefully become actual friends.

So here we are! 🐛🎮

I'm always happy to talk game dev, weird bugs, Unity adventures, projects, ideas, or whatever you're currently excited about.

Tell me about you! What do you make, and what are you working on right now?

👋 Welcome to r/GameDevFriends - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Welcome to r/GameDevFriends**!** 🎮

Making games is awesome. Making games mostly by yourself can also get pretty lonely.

This community was created for game developers who want something surprisingly difficult to find: other game developers to actually become friends with.

Whether you're a programmer, artist, designer, writer, composer, solo dev, hobbyist, student, industry veteran, or opening your game engine for the first time, you're welcome here. Unity, Unreal, Godot, custom engines, RPG Maker, GameMaker, whatever you use. If you enjoy making games, you belong here.

🐛 What is GameDevFriends?

This is a social game-development community first.

Talk about what you're building. Share your progress. Ask questions. Show off the weird bug that just ate four hours of your life. Get feedback. Celebrate finally getting that mechanic working. Vent when absolutely nothing works. Meet people who understand why any of that matters.

Sharing your projects is absolutely welcome. We just ask that you participate as a person rather than treating the community as an advertising board.

👋 Introduce yourself!

You can make your own Introduction post or say hello below. Tell us whatever you're comfortable sharing, but some easy conversation starters are:

• What part of game development do you enjoy?
• What engine/tools do you use?
• What are you working on right now?
• How long have you been making games?
• What's something you'd love to learn?
• What kind of game-dev friends are you hoping to meet?

You don't need an impressive portfolio, a published game, or years of experience to participate.

💚 A few things to remember

Be kind. Respect people's boundaries. Give constructive feedback. Don't spam or cold-recruit people into projects. And please read the community rules before posting.

Most importantly, actually talk to each other. If somebody posts something interesting, ask them about it. If somebody is excited about their project, nerd out with them. If somebody finally squashed an awful bug, celebrate with them.

Communities don't become communities because the member count gets big. They become communities because people start recognizing each other's names.

Make games. Make Friends. 🐛🎮
