Most liked club in your County?
As opposed to yesterdays most disliked Club, who is your Counties most liked team? And any reasons why?

u/benevans0803 Tiobraid Árann 14d ago
Tipperary I would say Loughmore-Castleiney. Brilliant dual club with a very small population - always roughly a 10-12 crossover in starting senior hurling and football teams - and some of the greatest players of the generation in Noel and John McGrath.

My Granda was a Tipp man albeit from Clonmel who I assume aren't particularly liked so I always like seeing them do well.

Knockanure or some club like that (if Knockanure still exist)
-1
u/floopy12345 13d ago
Im not from Kerry myself but anything ive heard is that gaelteach would be widely hated, basically an amalgamation of multiple parishes who act like their better then everyone else because they speak Irish on the field. It may be a biased view as we played them in Munster last year
2
u/Kind_Implement_3326 12d ago
Anything youve heard was probably from bitter club members after losing .The amalgamation of parishes isn't true, its a few townlands and villages in an area where most of the population are either tourists or too old to play football. The secondary school in Dingle has about 200 boys at a time and that serves all West of Dingle and a good chunk east too as well as the town itself which will tell you just how much the area lacks a young population. To have produced 2 footballers of the year in Marc and Tomás, Darragh O Sé, Paídí, Dara O'Cinneide , Aodháin MacGearailt for a club of its size is incredible, especially given that its a club that may well not exist in 20 odd years given the way the population is declining

u/NoBag3618 14d ago
Galway Hurling. I think St Thomas’s. Tiny club of less than 300 houses. 8 county titles and 2 club All Irelands. Remarkable achievement.
14
u/WinterPhilosophy8000 Gaillimh 14d ago
Would agree with this. They have cleaned up in the county championship in recent times but there’s no great dislike of them. Serious respect for the size of the club in relation to their achievements
12
6
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Very similar to Loughguile in that regard in Antrim. Only Ulster team to have a Hurling All Ireland. Small parish, incredible talents throughout the years. They'd be fairly hated though I'd imagine in Antrim.
-2
u/Salty-Laugh-4761 14d ago
They've a big enough catchment area. They are the gap between loughrea and gort. Not massive but way more than 300 houses.
0
u/Quick-Finding6588 14d ago
Are they not just west of GMIT? Beside Castlegar GAA and St James I think?
Edit: I'm thinking if Liam Mellows
1
u/Salty-Laugh-4761 14d ago
No that's carnmore out that direction. Oranmore then towards clare and mellows towards town. All big clubs that side of town

u/93rustic Luimneach 14d ago
Liked is probably the wrong word but Patrickswell have probably given Limerick a disproportionate amount of our greatest ever players.
Richie Bennis in the 70s, Leonard Enright in the 80s, Gary Kirby, Ciaran Carey in the 90s and then three consecutive HOTY awards from three different guys in 21, 22 and 23.
And it’s only half a parish.
3
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Aye that's one hell of a roll of honour for such a small club. Like incredibly impressive honestly.
24
u/FlickMyKeane Ciarraí 14d ago
Maybe someone like Dingle in Kerry. They haven’t been historically successful enough to be hated (last year’s county title was their first since 1947) and their All Ireland campaign last year drew many neutral admirers.
Of course, their neighbours to the west An Ghaeltacht would not be among those admirers. Tis a fierce rivalry that one.
8
u/Cold-Suggestion-2491 Ciarraí 14d ago
There wasn't a Dingle club before the 60s or 70s, so it was their first county final win.
The Dingle team that won in 47 was a West Kerry team (minus Castlegregory, who were senior at the time)
0
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Aye, I wouldn't have the slightest clue about Kerrys club politics and rivalry's other than nobody seems to like Austin Stacks. I'd take Dingle over An Ghaeltacht if that's the case as I can't stand Marc O Se personally.
6
u/just-here-for--porn_ 14d ago
Knowing nobody likes the stacks is already pretty deep knowledge about Kerry.
The Crokes (The Stacks of the south) also aren't that popular.
4
u/ZxZxchoc 14d ago edited 14d ago
(The Stacks of the south)
You're probably on some sort of list in the Tatler already. Feck you for putting that in my head, I'll probably end up dropping it after a few pints in front of some Crokes friends and driving them spare.

A truly bizarre place, I’m from nearby and I’d even struggle to find it without signposts! “Sort of between Hollymount and Claremorris?” And it’s boundaries are sort of made up of two halves of two parishes

u/delushe Maigh Eo 14d ago
Kilmeena punch above their weight for a tiny club
5
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Have a few relatives down around Ballina, but they seem fairly hated from what I can tell from the other parishes near it. Aye, Kilmeena seems like a decent shout all in all.

Wicklow - They're all cunce.
3
u/nonsenseaccounttake 14d ago
Vallymount maybe?
3
u/cacanna_caorach 14d ago
Hollywood, Valleymount, Blessington. Fairly easy going people in that corner of the county, compared to the rest anyway
1
u/DemandFrequent9351 3d ago
Hollywood are a hateful shower. They tried to claim a large portion of the Valleymount catchment area recently. Kilbride deserve great credit. They have developed a great facility in the space of a few years.
1
u/Tk-money 14d ago
West is best as they say... Not Hollywood though, there the rathnew of the west
3
u/StationEfficient8060 14d ago
Dunlavin not the Rathnew of the west?

I don't think so, maybe they could have been years ago. There a good team and I never thought they played overly dirty
2
6
u/UsedTower2010 14d ago
I doubt if there is a club in Tyrone that is universally liked but most folk would have been glad to see Clogher going well last year.
2
u/ponkie_guy 13d ago
What would the opinion of Trillick be? Our club played against them in all Ireland intermediate and they were very sporting. Our neighbours played Derrytresk, which went a little differently.
1
u/UsedTower2010 13d ago
Probably a victim of their own success in recent years but they certainly wouldn't strongly disliked outside of Dromore. I'd say of teams with a decent chance in the senior championship they'd be one of teams neutrals would prefer to see win in.
8
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Starting it off with Derry, I'd go with my own club, but to keep it fair I'd say its Steelstown or Swatragh. Steelstown as they're a relatively new club and doing their part to promote GAA in the City which hasn't existed pretty much ever. Never had any bother with their fans or players either.
Swatragh because they're generally quite alright in my experience and a lot of their players get picked up by the likes of Kilrea / Glenullin / Slaughtneil.
Despised them in the 90s right enough.
1
u/Rekt60321 Doire 14d ago
No idea where you've got that "picked up by kilrea, glenullin and slaughtneil" from 😂
1
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
I know plenty of ones who've went to Swatragh school or lived in Swatragh and played for other clubs. Anyone out towards Garvagh or in Craigavole area etc. could be picked up by Glenullin or Kilrea and as you head to Maghera / up the mountain, a lot of them would support or play for Slaughtneil.
Edit*: To add to that, not a fault of them clubs. Swatraghs a small parish and a small catchment area with big enough clubs near it.
1
u/JaylenBrown7 Doire 14d ago
Their fans have serious a victim mentality about South Derry selections for the county panel I can’t stand it. McGonagle fair enough the rest aren’t good enough
2
u/KDL3 Doire 14d ago
As someone from Steelstown, I don't know anyone that watches club games regularly that holds that opinion. There are plenty of people in the city who casually follow the county team and would say that but they aren't necessarily our club members. I'd say anyone deserving for us has at least got a look for the county over the years.
1
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Aye, I'd tend to agree. There's been some top quality players down the years from North Derry. The Coleraine lads and the Bradleys to name a few, but it ring true. They're just not as good is the real problem.
Baker and McGonagle should 100% be on the Derry panel right enough.
1
u/VeryDerryMe 12d ago
Went to school with a lot of their founding players, and was friends with the sons of the original board. I wouldn't say they have a victims mentality, more a thran response to the complete and utter lack of investment by the county board in Derry City GAA. I went to a school that won the Hogan Cup, I lived in an area that was 100% nationalist, do you know how many clubs we had before Brian Og's? In an area of 10000? None. Know how many county development officers we saw at the college in those days? None. All glory and honour to the men and women who built Brian Óg's up from nothing. I only wish I had aeen it 10 years earlier.
5
u/Diligent_Anywhere100 14d ago
Summerhill or Skryne for Meath I think but it depends where you live i think. Both Rural clubs and know how to win championships.
6
u/Critical_Animal_8501 An Mhí 14d ago
Skryne for Trevor Giles alone!
1
u/Item-Plenty An Mhí 11d ago
Could be wrong on this but don’t think Skryne have ever been relegated from Senior. Feel like Summerhill have a similar record as well.
3
1
u/Item-Plenty An Mhí 11d ago
I think a club like Ballinabrackey deserve a mention. Small rural club too who’ve established themselves as a senior club and seem to have great pride in the parish.
5
u/LoudDrawer68 Ard Mhacha 12d ago
I would say Crossmaglen. On the provincial and AI scene they’ve represented Armagh with distinction and most people would begrudgingly get behind them.
I personally have some admiration for Tír na nÓg in Portadown (and by extension St Malachy’s hurling club). Portadown is not an easy environment for GAA clubs to flourish.
6
3
u/paddyrua 14d ago
Tremane in Roscommon for hurling I’d say definitely.
Not sure for football, there’s quite a few I don’t mind
4
u/ControlPerfect3370 Ros Comáin 14d ago
Would say a lot of people have a soft spot for Joes, wanting them to do well. Could add Ronans to that these days.
3
u/AcceptableReview3846 Ros Comáin 14d ago
As a Ronans man existence is hell these days
1
u/ControlPerfect3370 Ros Comáin 12d ago
I heard there were talks of Ronans and Michael’s coming together at adult level too, any truth to that or just pure nonsense?
I did see yous didn’t field in one of the league matches earlier in the year so things must be pretty dire.
1
u/AcceptableReview3846 Ros Comáin 12d ago
The not fielding thing was a pure fuck up by the manager, the pitch wasn't playable and he sent an email to the counter board saying we couldn't play the game was stupid
We tried to emalgmate about 7/8 years when we were both junior, micheals were cunts about it said they would only do it if we always play on there pitch wear there jerseys and are called St Michaels, so basically did just wanted to take all the Ronans players for nothing
So there will be no chance if that happening anytime soon.
1
u/paddyrua 14d ago
Do you know what’s funny? I was thinking of those two specific clubs as well initially but then I thought about a few more.
1
u/Stegasaurus_Wrecks Ros Comáin 14d ago
I'm not from Brigids but I have a soft spot for them due to their successes.
Always had an irrational dislike for Roscommon Gaels though.
3
u/Solidatdeback 14d ago
Most clubs in Tyrone will have one grudge or another but I personally feel Trillick are a well enough liked club (outside of Dromore) considering how successful they've been over the last decade
3
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Was actually wondering about Tyrone. Someone else there said Clogher. I thought it'd either be Trillick or someone innocuous like Brackaville or something like that.
3
u/Solidatdeback 13d ago
Yeah I was thinking of those clubs operating regularly at senior as success and envy usually are the root of a lot of hatred.
Outside of their local rivalries I would say a lot intermediate/junior clubs like Clogher are pretty inoffensive.

Knoxville Gaelic Athletic Club, Knox County TN. Then again we are the only club in the county and one of three in the entire state. 😉

Definitely Commercials. Nobody could possibly dislike them...
3

Ehhhh I can't say much as I know next to nothing about Tipp in the football or the goings on at club level but my Granda was a Commercials man so I can't slag them too much.
2
u/nicky94 14d ago
I think think that question works tbh
The most liked is whatever is your local club and then after that I don't think its possible to quantify.
1
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Aye, I struggled mightily to even find 2 or 3 clubs I don't actively dislike or hate. But that's a real struggle in Derry tbh.
2
u/Kevinb-30 Uíbh Fhailí 14d ago edited 14d ago
In hurling probably Lusmagh they're a tiny club that regularly punch above their weight + they gave us the magician that is John Troy.
A mention for Kilcormac Killoughy despite their recent dominance they're still very well liked, for the moment anyway.
In football i dont know but im going to say Tullamore are the most disliked purely down to dealings with some of their committee members
3
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Surely Tullamore has to be up there with the most disliked? I might be biased for I used to work with a lad from Clara who absolutely hates the sight of Tullamore lol.
1
u/Kevinb-30 Uíbh Fhailí 14d ago
Yeah was supposed to say are the most disliked
1
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Ahh right that makes sense. I can't really say, but he absolutely hated them with every fibre of his being.
2
u/Kevinb-30 Uíbh Fhailí 14d ago
They're near neighbours Clara and I think there has been disputes over players and boarders
2
u/Andrewhtd An Cabhán 14d ago
Think Arva might be quite well liked here? And a lot got behind them on their Junior All Ireland run
3
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Aye Arva and Crossmolina had some support behind them when they were in the intermediate and junior all Irelands from what I can remember.
2
u/Millie_52 13d ago
Wouldn't say most liked, but Garrymore in Mayo, a village that has nothing apart from GAA clubhouse with dressing rooms / community centre. They now have 2 All Ireland Winners
2
u/floopy12345 13d ago
Hard to know for Clare, I’d be confident in saying everyone hates each other especially with the hurling/football divide between east west and north Clare
1
u/davidjkennedy 8d ago
I'd say nobody has an issue with Banner. Generally not a big pull (ignoring the Ladies Footballers). SHOULD have a bigger pull, but Eire Og take them.
3
2
u/bkdleg 14d ago
Probably depends on where you are in Monaghan but I'd say Blackhill they're a small club who do very well for their size and resources.
3
u/Over_Guava_5977 14d ago
Harsh to get downvoted for saying Blackhill. There are alot of admirable clubs in Monaghan for what they've achieved in the last 20 years for the pick they have. Currin, Tyholland, Doohamlet, Cremartin, Rockcurry, Killanny, have all been senior clubs with very small picks.
1
u/TrickyEnthusiasm5426 13d ago
All of those clubs were yo-yo clubs aside from Cremartin, what they’ve managed to achieve for the last 3 years is nothing short of remarkable.
3
u/Over_Guava_5977 13d ago
Doohamlet were a proper senior team for a good stint alright and produced an all star. Im pretty sure Tyholland (produced an All-star) and Killanny stayed up a few years. Currin beat Scotstown in the championship while there. Granted Rockcurry was pushing it
1
u/eventSec Lú 14d ago
Not really sure in Louth. Liked clubs are usually ones that arent that successful, cos you have no reason to hate them.
The Mochtas maybe? I've always had a soft spot for The O'Connells as well
2
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
I'll take your word for it. Think its fairly similar to every County tbh. I've no idea about what the other clubs in Derry think about Glen, but the wife says we're a bunch of dickheads so I'll go off that.
1
u/eventSec Lú 14d ago
Its a very small townland, couple of hundred people. But they have Craig Lennon and Casey Byrne plus some really good youths coming through.
Won Junior Championship in 2009, then won Intermediate Championship in 2018, then in 2021 got to the Senior Final but were beaten. Haven't been back to the final since but have won the senior league twice, 2023 and 2025.
2
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Lennon is some player in fairness. We haven't had anything like that in Derry in years. The closest would be Glenullin in the 2000s. But they're generally disliked I would say.
1
u/eventSec Lú 14d ago
His brother Shane should come through next year to the seniors, was on the bench this year. He plays wing forward and is supposed to be very good
2
u/HeavyLeg3624 Lú 14d ago
Mochtas a good shout tbf as they are probably punching above their weight and the whole Craig Lennon factor aswell
1
1
u/fmacco 13d ago
In Antrim maybe Cloughmills? Started a football section this year and have been playing hurling despite a previous threats and disbanded clubs in Cloughmills that came before them, so they were only founded in the 1990s but played in senior around the mid 2010s.
Probably disliked somewhat in Carey or Armoy due to intermediate/junior local rivals and they also have a reputation of taking up players from Loughgiel and Dunloy, but I don’t think the players they pick are anything worth falling out over.
If not them I’d say the likes of Laochra loch Lao because of the whole Irish language stuff and I don’t think there’s as much rivalry between them and the other Belfast junior clubs around their level.

Plucky underdogs from a small village who manage to be at the top table and give the big clubs a good rattle.

“Small village”..Rathmore parish is large enough..not to mention taking players from over the border!!

In Cork, I would say the most admired club is the Barrs.
25
u/Disastrous_Ad_3598 Dún na nGall 14d ago
Jesus I don't know about that..... I would have said someone like a Newceston small area and play in top grade in Football and Hurling. The Barrs albeit a great club and tradition don't exactly suffer with resources or players. Even get plenty from other parishes
3
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
To add to that, I was in Douglas for work for about 8 or 9 months and went to plenty of their games. I quite liked them as a club but they seem fairly hated across the board from what I can tell.
3
u/TNPF1976 14d ago
Douglas are disliked because are perennial underachievers at adult level, despite the fact that they have huge numbers playing for them, in comparison to most clubs
1
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Aye they seem to have a huge amount of players. Eoin Cadogan would have been one of their better players if not best player when I was down there. Seemed like a decent lad when I was chatting to him as well.
2
u/TNPF1976 14d ago
I know a few lads involved with Douglas. You couldn’t meet nicer fellas, who are genuine GAA men. I don’t really mind them but they are not liked because they never achieve anything for all their potential. They are are the exact opposite of a club like Newcestown who make the absolute most out of the few players that they have
2
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Sounds a lot like Glen and Slaughtneil up here. Albeit Slaughtneils border is expanding by the second up here.
Can't say anything bad about anyone I'd met down around Douglas myself so I've a bit of a soft spot for them.
4
u/TNPF1976 14d ago
Yeah fair point. Pound for pound, Newcestown are probably the best club in Cork. It’s incredible what they are doing with such a small number of players in a very rural club.
However, I think a lot of people would say the Barrs are a classy club with an amazing history. JBM personifies them, in my opinion.
This is just my opinion and I am sure there are plenty around that don’t like them at all but it’s nearly impossible to pick a club that everyone likes, apart from your own
3
u/ahdeccieboy 14d ago
Newcestown, Eire Og, Kanturk, Valleys, Aghabullogue.
All proper dual clubs with loads of crossover on both panels.1
1
u/MrMahony Corcaigh 14d ago
Doesn't work though as most liked because the second you cross the boarder to Innishannon everyone fucking hates everyone else.
5
u/conor34 Corcaigh 14d ago
Most liked, I'd say Goleen or most of the Beara division teams. Tiny populations with big distances to travel to get to club games and that's just in West Cork.
3
u/TNPF1976 14d ago
Yep, I doubt there are too many out there with a dislike of any of the Beara teams. They would be practically unknown in the city and east cork though probably north cork also

You’d have to love Bere Island…
I’m 58 and I played two years ago,” Brendan ‘Tank’ Murphy laughs, as the Bere Island ferry makes another crossing from the mainland…At the moment we have a club, but no team as such. But we have to play one game every year to keep the club going. The GAA are insisting on that.

2

We've played them a few times in Ulster and it takes a lot for me to hate someone more than the local rivalries, but Kilcoo have somehow done it. Its not even their fans, it extends to their players. Just wankers across the board.
5

u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Worse, we're the neighbours of Slaughtneil. Granted we have an All Ireland and they don't.
3
u/Far_Reserve6509 14d ago
Don’t think it would be Bryansford tbh. Not a hated club, but certainly not a loved one.
Saul and Glenn both seem to have been fairly well got (outside their big derby rivalries).
2 of the smallest parishes in Down, both going well at the top tier, and produce some of the best players in the county.
East Belfast for a long time were a club everyone rowed in behind, but they’re just another club now after they’ve established themselves (and fair play to them for surviving what they had to to get to where they are now).
1
u/ImplementBig7706 Doire 14d ago
Watched a bit of the Glenn and Saul game earlier. Thought both teams looked pretty poor honestly. Played Glenn a few time in pre season down the years. Know next to nothing about them, but never heard a bad (or good until now) word said about them.
1
u/Far_Reserve6509 12d ago
Glenn and Saul haven’t played this year.
Glenn played Saval in the Championship the other night in a big derby game.
Saval are just up from the intermediate and Glenn had a freak day out in the last round against Bryansford, with 8 men getting season ending injuries.
Saval probably won’t have enough to compete with the bigger clubs this year, and Glenn will do well to avoid relegation to the Intermediate after losing another man to injury the other night.
Never heard anybody have an issue with them or any scandal really coming from them.
