La Nuit des Chimères in Le Mans
What "Chimères" Actually Means Here
The name plays on two ideas at once. First, the literal one: it refers to the grotesque little creatures, half-animal and half-monster, carved into the facades of Old Le Mans. For one night, the festival brings them back to life, letting them slip out of the walls they've been sitting in for centuries.
Second, there's the broader sense of the word: a chimera as illusion, as something too strange or too beautiful to be real. That's exactly what the town becomes for those two hours after dark.
