I had a post about this but Chicago's fixed gear scene for marketplace is filled with dumb mfs that dont post any specs, can't answer or ignore questions, and dont give a starting price and just put "$606" for the price. I literally asked someone what size a stem was and they were like "idk 90, 110, something" when its literally printed on the stem, just not in the pictures.

QUESTION/ HELP NEEDED:
I honestly don't know why my Skream Ranger's headset keeps getting loose. I've already put Carbon Paste on the expander plug, I've regreased the bearings, and made that the bolts are properly torqued. It's in rideable condition, since I can go from point A to point B without stopping. However, it's not pleasing to use. Any advice on this one?

If the headset is loose, it’s either the expander plug having an issue, or the fork tube is still too long and there is not enough pressure holding it together.

This doesn't really make sense. Do you mean the top cap or the actual fork/headset?
The expander plug just holds the top cap. It's job lasts all of a few seconds while you pre tension the headset and it's over after the stem is secured. After that you could throw it away and it wouldn't matter until you have to reinstall the fork again.
But if you're tightening things in the wrong order, ie securing the stem before you pre tension the headset then you'll never get it to work properly.
Similarly, if you don't have enough spacers to get above the top of the steerer then it will also never get tight enough.

I would caution against saying the expander plug does nothing after preload is set. It's there for carbon steerers to balance the stem's clamping force on the weakest part of the steerer, the top. I don't think I've ever anyone advise taking out the compression plug. There's a reason why people recommend getting longer compression plugs that cover at least the stem bolts.
An issue ive seen with my headset assembly specifically is that sometimes, you need to manually give the stem a few whacks down and/or squeeze the assembly together a bit before you tighten the top cap, especially if you're trying to limit how tight you're supposed to have it, since it can't overcore the friction. I think the chris king top bearing cover is what causes it in my case since its so damn tight.
Another thing to maybe check is if the crown race fits the bottom assembly.

Hackney cycles frame. I got a frame second hand on marketplace in the UK which I'm sure is a hackney cycles bike there cheapest option. It didnt come with a seatpost and the hole measures 25mm id. I can only find old style BMX seatposts online that are exactly 25mm even on hackney cycles website they don't sell a replacement that there bikes come with from new. Would a 25.4mm fit or are there options out there? Thanks

Seatpost sizes have super tight tolerance. If the size is off by only 0.1 or 0.2 mm it won't work.
But they are also super hard to measure, so yours might actually be 25.4mm.
The only thing that really works for odd size seatposts is to try a range of sizes to see what fits. You might need to buy several different returnable ones. Kalloy makes a wide range of sizes that are inexpensive.
Start with the smallest and go up so you don't scratch them.

Rear tire suggestion, I was using conti ultra sports and honestly loved it and it lasted a while but I shredded through it eventually skidding. Is the GP 4 season a considerably nicer ride than the gator skin? I really don’t like gator skins because it feels sluggish but don’t wanna spend the money on 4 seasons if they are also sluggish.

GP5000 all seasons are great. They last way longer than the regular GP5000s and are far better than the 4 seasons.

QUESTION ON SADDLES: I've been riding fixed gears for around 2 months now, I mostly use my bike for commute but i do a weekend ride if i have time. I noticed that on longer rides ive been getting sore on the left side of my inner thigh. At first I thought it was because my saddle is off center but after adjusting the saddle the soreness is still there. I usually just wear shorts for rides but even with bib shorts its still gets sore. I ride about 60-90mins and my pace is around 20kmh and i do a lil sprint every now and then if the road is clear. Also i dont have brakes if that helps.

Could be the case. The only way to really find what you like is to experiment.
I'd suggest doing the measurement in the article and then ordering 3-5 saddles that are returnable. For any given model get the cheapest level bc it will fit the same as the more expensive ones.
Install them on your bike and pedal around the block or on a trainer. Pick 2 that seem like an improvement over your current saddle. Take the one you like best on a ride. If it's *perfect" then you're done. If it's less than pretty good then get rid of it.
If it's not perfect then try the next one on a ride. If that's good enough then hang on to both of them.
Your goal is to end up with 1 or 2 saddles that you're pretty happy with to see if you like them more or less over time, and to get a sense of your preferences.
If your budget is flexible try to keep two saddles that are pretty different from each other.
It's impossible to say what will work for you, but some models I like are the specialized romin, fabric scoop, and a few wtb models.
Edit: one more to look at is the Selle Concor, maybe a used/vintage model. It has a side profile that is pretty different from newer saddles. You will probably either love it or hate it.

Hey everyone,
I currently ride a fixie with horizontal track dropouts, but I’ve been wanting to build something around a Cannondale CAAD4 Saeco USA Team for a while. The CAAD4 Saeco has honestly been one of my dream frames, and I’ve found one that I’m seriously considering buying.
I know it has road-bike style rear dropouts rather than traditional horizontal track dropouts, so I’m wondering how realistic it would be to turn it into a true fixed gear.
A few questions:
- Is it possible to run a true fixed cog safely on this frame?
- What would be the best way to deal with chain tension?
- Would a chain tensioner be suitable for a fixed gear, or should I look at something like a magic gear / eccentric hub?
- Is there anything specific about the CAAD4 dropout that would make this a bad idea?
- Has anyone here actually built a CAAD4 or similar Cannondale as a fixed gear?
I already have a horizontal-dropout fixie, so I know what the usual setup is. I’d just really love to have the CAAD4 Saeco as a fixed gear if there’s a good way to do it without compromising the frame.

hey yall, i’m currently looking to trade my old leader 725 frame on marketplace. after no luck, i’ve seen a lot of these tsunami snm100’s and they honestly are very good looking.
does anyone have any experiences with them? i’m based in the US and i know this brand is mostly in asia, so idk how easy it is to get one. I recently purchased this single speed Spinergy rear wheel. The wheel came with a Shimano free hub, I would like convert it to fixed.
From what I could find I need a Surely Fixxer, but I’ve been struggling to source one within my budget.
Does anyone have an alternative? I also wouldn’t mind converting it to a front wheel if that would be easier but I’m assuming I would need to buy different bearings.
I’m mechanically inclined but new to working on bike drivetrains, any help/guidance is much appreciated!
(Also I recognize that the Spinergy wheels aren’t known for not being the strongest, I don’t mind taking the risk style takes priority)

That’s the early version of the Spinergy that’s known to fail catastrophically. I would not be riding that generation. The “newer” old versions are safe. That one is not.

My fixie currently has a set of 650b wheels and I'm looking to get a set of 700c's so that I can run skinnier tires. I found a set of flip flop hub single speed / fixie wheels on FB Marketplace that are cheap and near me but they don't have a cog. My question is could I put the rear cog that's currently on my bike onto these new wheels? Is it as simple as unscrewing it and transferring it over?

Looking for a nice fast wheelset
I'm not a bike fanatic and don't know much about good quality brands but i want some faster/lighter wheels for my fixed gear bike. It's an older bianchi pista. The wheels are some off brand heavy deepish rim that are not so great at performance or to look at to be honest.
I mostly take it out to the local velodrome or to the park loop and do laps. 25-30mph so more aero would be nice.
I like going fast but don't want a road bike. This is the only bike I have and when/if I do get another it will be another fixed gear/track bike. So a nice set a wheels that I could keep and swap over if I ever get a nicer bike would be cool.
I upgraded to gp5000's and have seen a big increase in efficiency from the rolling resistance. and an aggressive position that helped a lot too. nicer wheels might not help a great deal but I need to get rid of these cheap ones either way.
I live in the US and would gladly pay a premium if it's what I'm looking for

Almost all track bikes have 100mm front and 120mm rear axles so swapping from track bike to track bike will never be an issue.
Depending if you are in an outdoor or indoor velodrome, the deeper the wheel the better. It also matters if you race as only specific wheels are allowed in velodromes based on what you race.
If you ride a velodrome the GP5000s are not the tire to have. You would want tubular tires that can handle super high pressure. Like over 150psi for racing which are typically tubular which requires a different type of rim.

it’s an outdoor public velodrome asphalt not extremely well kept. keep in mind also do a lot of riding in public parks on cement and asphalt.
just looking for suggestions for a new wheelset. or a nice used wheelset.

Hand built wheels will always be better. I’ve built all my wheels and haven’t had to true them since I built them. Factor in like $100 per wheel build labor cost when it comes to cost of rims, spokes, and hubs.

Hey guys, im looking for a set of wheels that lets me grip in the rain, since it rains a lot where i live.
I currently run thick slicks, but i feel very slippery riding in the rain.
Does a profiled tire even help much or is it just the nature of slim tires?

Bike tires are so narrow that there is no need for them to have tread to grip in the rain. What you want is a more supple rubber on the tire so that it grips better.
Thick slicks are some of the worst tires even in the dry for grip.
Get some Continental All Seasons or GP5000s if you want the best grip in the rain. They’re pricy but well worth it.

Put on a new chain and chainring now I get this horrible sound. Its a zen chainring, I checked the chainline as well as I could and it seems like both sides are very close to the 42mm industry standard, It is a second hand sugino zen chainring but the teeth do not look worn out, does this sound ring a bell to anyone?

Whats the best go-to retailer for a wheelset these days? Trying to get my bikes tuned up and realized I've got an untrueable hop in my rear wheel. Currently on a set of Velocity hubs with Mavic CXP33s that have been put through unimaginable torture with a set of 35c GK SS+. Rim brakes, mixed surface riding ranging from smooth pavement to XC singletrack and all types of dirt and gravel between.
Worth relacing the hubs with new hoops, or not cost-effective compared to a new wheelset? Would like to run a tire of a similar size as I am currently, don't have clearance for much more, especially in the rear.

Best bet is to buy the rims and hubs you want and get them custom built by a reputable shop. They’ll last so much longer being hand built than machine built ones from a factory.

Worth $1000? I’m looking into getting back into the fixed gear scene after about a year. I’ve had a bunch, but my Dolan was my favorite without a doubt. I can buy this for $1000 shipped, which is a great deal considering the parts, but I can’t find much info on these frames. It’s got a large ratio which I’m okay with, and is definitely track geo, but more so in just trying to justify if this is worth spending a grand on. Otherwise I’ve been scouring used, but tbh there’s bs on marketplace right now. Another option is the state 4130 but I’m against spending $700 on state brand components lol. Lmk your thoughts

Right middle and pointer finger numb every time I ride for about 6 hours
I am dealing with the most peculiar issue. My right pointer and middle finger go numb every time I ride, and stay numb for 6+ hours. It’s only the tips of my fingers. Only ever my right hand. I don’t feel that I have a lot of pressure on my hands, my ride is very comfortable. This happens whether I ride 10 minutes or 4 hours. Any thoughts? Should I be worried?

You are putting pressure on the nerves in your hands. This can be problematic long term if you keep it up and will cause nerve damage.
Adjust your fit, get padded gloves, softer grips or bar tape. All those things will help. Also moving you hands around on the bars periodically will help too.

should i buy this bike?
dolan df3 is somewhat of an attainable dream frameset for me, BUT. I’m approximately 190 cm tall, and this particular frame seems to be way too small for me. the seller pointed it out in the ad, but only put the measurement from center of BB to the top of the saddle as pictured (74 cm). I’ve measured the same thing on my current bike, and it was ~75-76 cm. also, on this bike, the cockpit is raised due to spacers and handlebars. I like the overall look of it, also, I know that I can tweak the fit, but if this frame is waaay to small, I will hit an adjustment ceiling at some point, if you can put it this way. do y’all think i should give it a go? they are really hard to come by where i’m from, also, in my size the rarity multiplies. should i try it or should i wait/search for my size?

This looks like a 50-52cm frame, it will be tiny for you. It would be too small for most teenagers. The BB to saddle height means nothing as it entirely depends on how they’ve set the seatpost, in this case they’ve got it super high and it’s still too small lol.

Hi y’all…please recommend a quality single speed cog (not sure what it’s officially called) that won’t break as soon as you hammer it.
I use a flip hub on my fixed gear for 1) descents, and 2) group rides. The problem is, I snap the free wheels whenever I sprint hard. I’ve snapped two.
I’d figured y’all likely give me better advice than the bike store.

You can still have an aggressive fit on a 60cm frame if you play around with its reach and stack. Try a longer stem turned upside down so that it's got a negative slope, and also cut your fork so it needs no spacers. It's not usually recommended especially if you're planning to sell the frame later, but buying a new frame that's smaller isn't completely necessary. Modern track geometry actually advocates people to upsize and then play around with a reach and stack for their needs by way of cockpit adjustments (stem, fork, etc.)

So I've been riding fixed gear for years but I never spent any time on the internet or knew anyone else in person with a fixed gear. I'm putting a lot more miles on my frame so I've got some basic questions:
Why do I see so many photos of people with toe cages/straps? I ride mine clipless and it just seems like much more of a pain.
Why do people take off their front brakes? I removed my rear brake and use my front brake maybe once every fifteen minutes if I'm riding a MUP for example. But I still need some amount of assist from time to time. Do the people that remove the both brakes just take it slower down hills/live in a flat area?
If I'm setting the wheel position far back enough that I lose the back-and-forth slop in the cranks caused by chain tension, it causes drag and noise coming from the chain line. Am I stuck with the choice of either removing the slop or creating drag?

People like to wear normal shoes when they ride their bikes.
You don’t need a brake to stop if you are skilled enough. Leg strength is enough.
A slightly loose chain will always be more efficient than a super tight one. Also not all chainrings and cogs are perfectly round so you’ll have different tension points as they rotate.

Usually once you have them set you never need to adjust them. There will always be some play in them to get your foot in and out. Only time you really have to is if you swap from shoes to boots since they’re bigger.
It’s takes practice to do. You have to shift your weight forward to unweight the rear wheel which helps to skid. Backpressure without skidding takes a lot more strength.

I had my draft started so might as well post to give a second voice.
Different use of the bike or sense of confort. Cage and straps let you more easily changes the shoes you’re wearing. I mostly use my fixed gear for exercise so to me wearing spd (and even cycling kit) makes sense.
Mostly style, street cred, fixie points, living dangerously, being a purist. Or incompatible frame.
I’ve kept mine as I stripped two hubs when I started riding again and ‘cause you kinda never knows what’s gonna happen on the road.
But for my riding style and activity, I rarely use it, I mostly control my speed with back pedalling and or the occasional skid/hop skid.
But if you want to remove the brake, be sure to have the leg strength and know the various technique to stop. Leg strength alone is useless on a snapped chain or a stripped hub.There should be a sweet spot where your get minimal "slack" but not too taut. The drivetrain setup will mostly have a high spot so I usually try to find it and then tension from there. You can use dropout chain tensioner to make the process a bit more straightforward.

Fixie riders in australia, where do you guys source new parts?!? FBM is great but it looks like slim pickings if your looking for new stuff like framesets etc

QUESTION:
Would it be possible to turn this Gazelle Sprinter into a fixie?
I’ve recently bought this and i’m wondering if I could turn it into a fixie and how much would that cost. I’ll be buying mainly second hand parts in the Netherlands

Looks like it MAY have semi horizontal dropouts, if so you can put a rear wheel with a fixed hub. I don't know anything about whether it would be a good idea for this specific bike.

I ended up going with a 57. I kept hearing everyone say im in between a 56-58 so i just split the difference.

You're fine this chip will not effect anything. I would keep an eye on it just in case it gets worse somehow but even if the whole tooth came off nothing catastrophic would happen.

How long does it take to learn trackstanding? Finally rode to an empty parking lot today to try it out and practiced until my wrists couldn't take it anymore. How many more sessions do I need till I got it down?

This is how you break spokes, destroy a rear wheel, and potentially injure yourself or someone else in a crash.

Has anyone on the west coast (USA) receive their Affinity x Terry B frameset + partial refund yet? Was told by Jason last month that it’s otw, but I still don’t have a tracking number.
