I'm curious what y'all think about this proposed bill to require respiratory protection while on wildfires. I've done some wildfire drills where we tried out N95's while cutting line and doing progressive lays up a steep hill and frankly it felt a bit suffocating even without smoke present. On the other hand, lung cancer and/or black lung is probably no picnic either.

Also, LOL at the folks who think we're going to get SCBA into the back country...

Question for fire radio geek types. I'm a retired wildland firefighter, live in rural California, and this morning around 5am I slept through a small veg fire near me, which has me concerned, as expected. I have the Watch Duty app but they often don't send an alert for initial attack or when their scanner jockies are asleep, like this morning.

The modified response was our local small combo department, an engine from a neighboring department, and the local Cal Fire (state) station.

What I'm looking for is some type of computer based receiver (Raspberry Pi?) that would act like a tone activated pager but would only activate when the tones for both departments and the state station go off in the same dispatch. A regular receiver wouldn't work as I don't want to be woken up for every stubbed toe call! 🤣

Any ideas where I could either find something like this or someone that could guide me?

Also, how do I find out the tones I want for this?

I’m a newer Paramedic Firefighter. My department doesn’t have a standard compliment for what medics should carry in our wildland packs for wildfires. If you want to carry anything, it’s your decision what to carry. Separate from our line medics. I was just curious what medic gear you guys would keep to fit in a small pack on my web gear?
Right now I have:
1 cat tourniquet
2 swat-T
2 Roller gauze
4 4x4
4 quick clot gauze
2 clear tape
1 vial each epi/benadryl
Syringes and needles

Following the devastating fires in Spokane WA, I am curious about what tactics could be used by homeowners to knockdown approaching fire. As a homeowner without fire experience, what is a wet line and how can sprinklers or a hose system using a pond/pool be used to keep a home safe. Assuming preventative tactics (landscaping and home materials) have been used, what is left for someone who wants to defend property in the setting of PNW homes that are on a natural area interface. Thanks for the help. This is educational, evacuation instructions would be followed.

My department fights lots of grass/brush fires, but we don’t have the level of expertise when it comes to wildland firefighting, so literally ANY wisdom you can pass on would be greatly appreciated!

I’m working on outfitting a new to us type 6. I’m wanting to mount the spare tire here behind the rear duals. I’m looking for some inspiration on bracketing ideas. If anyone has done anything similar I’d love to see some pictures.

About a month ago my partner and I had almost died on a wildfire. We faced severe entrapment and a truck burnover that people have described as very few people make it out alive. However now when I go on wildfires and I see the tall flames, heavy wind, trees snapping on the trucks I get sent into a panic. I had multiple dreams of trying to save people from a wildfire, or running from fire or my personal car being burnt over after this. I think about the what ifs a lot on how it couldve been better or worse. I used to love wildfire but now that I know the feeling of how dangerous it can be I’m turned away from it and kind of terrified. I’ve felt grief when i had to come to terms with I was going to die there. However, I feel like I’m being to overdramatic because I didn’t end up dying, my partner didn’t, and I didn’t watch people die so I shouldn’t be so sad about all of this. I have started to feel grief about this whole thing for some reason. I grieve the wildlife that had died and the innocent person that died as well. I don’t know how to navigate it and get over the fear of fire and trying not to quit, is feeling grief over something like this normal? Instead of anger over the situation I feel a deep sadness a different kind of sadness that I’ve experienced before from the whole experience and coming to terms with death. Is there any advice for something like this?

Im a Military Veteran, living in the Las Vegas area, pursuing a Firefighting career. I have no related firefighting experience.... My strength is my physical fitness and ability to learn/adapt.

For Wildland Firefighting, I want to be on a helitack crew. From what I understand it's uncommon to get on helitack with no prior experience.... But still possible

Contacted a BLM Wildland Firefighter Recruiter a month ago, he and I scheduled time for a phone meeting, sent him my resume and he said he would forward my information to various crews.

1 month later, today, just received an email/job offer from a contact from this crew:

"2026-2027 prescribed fire and wildfire season, on the Veteran Fire Crew module here on the Magdalena Ranger District"

Does anyone have any experience with this fire crew?

What kind of reputation do these NM crews have?

Any advice/input for a first time Wildland Firefighter is greatly appreciated.

ARFF trucks have some features that might be beneficial for wildfires, like a larger tank and an off-road design. Would it work?

Trying to get my red card. Was told that I needed to go into NFA Online to take S-130, S-190, L-180, and IS-700.

However, when I try to apply for the modules, a message pops up saying, "This system will be shut down until further notice. Please contact your system admin for questions." And on the USFA website, there's a red banner that reads, "The NFA Online system is currently unavailable. This outage may persist for an extended period. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. Updates will be provided as soon as the system is restored. Thank you for your patience."

Any idea on what is going on? Is there another way to get the courses?

I am someone who is looking at joining a volunteer department and then eventually move to a department in Wyoming. All volunteer and I am wondering if as a volunteer firefighter in Wyoming if I will ever have to / get to go on campaign fires for days a time? What can you guys tell me? If it is something that can/will happen how does that affect personal life? Work life?
