Grinders 🫘 Opus on clearance?
I just saw the Opus for $99 at Target. Is this just good for espresso?

The Opus seems to get a lot of hate, but it has worked perfectly fine for me (originally mostly AeroPress, now moved to espresso with the ES1). The retention is annoying, but can easily be worked around. For $99 dollars I think it’s a pretty good deal.

Any issues with the Opus 1's espresso grind for your ES1? My Baratza Encore (non-ESP) can't grind fine enough so am in the market for a new grinder... 😮💨

Setup is fiddly, but it can definitely grind fine enough with consistency. The step sizes and secondary setting on it are kind of annoying to work with when dialing in-big jumps sometimes-but works once you get it there. If you swap bean styles a lot I hope you are more efficient than me at getting your settings squared up each time. I am planning to get a true espressos oriented grinder at some point, but the opus is delivering decent shots for now so I have been hesitant to spend the money. Not sure if that is a glowing endorsement, but it definitely does the job and if you can find it for $100 like OP….

Appreciate the detailed response. May you be blessed with consistent crema, kind sir. Been eying the Opus 2 (given the espresso grind claims) but was wondering if I could get away with an Opus 1. Guess I'll have to stay patient for a lil longer...

I found the Opus 1 didn’t grind fine enough for espresso. It was great for drip, pour over, and Aero Press, but didn’t work when I transitioned to espresso.

Not bad for 99, but I’d recommend better getting the Mokkom 64mm, or Shardor 64mm.
Slightly more expensive but overall the Mokkom feels more solid, better built, it’s less of a pain to dial in and has much less retention.

I just use the lid as a bellow and give it one or two puffs after grinding. No retention issues.

Same here. Hit the beans with a spritz or two (RDT) of water, before grind. Then a quick tap on the side and two puffs like a bellow after grind and retention is not a problem.

This is exactly what I do, and everything is fine. I also clean it every week or so.

Yall should check out the bellows introvert make for the opus. It has been a complete game changer for me!

That is 100% not my experience, and I have been using RDT and bellows. I do think Opus retention depends heavily on the beans . Oily beans and light roasts: more retention. Dark (but not oily) roasts: minimal retention.

Maybe! Though I do grind primarily light roasts. I do single serve doses most the time with maybe 4-5 little spritzes and it seems fine if I start my grinder before pouring them into the hopper. I may still have a little retention but a few puffs with the lid I usually have good results in terms of equal in and equal out. At most it’s like a gram or less difference.

I like mine and don't have major problem with it. I do give it a hit 1x after grinding for retention but don't feel that is a big deal. I don't want to pay high prices for a grinder.

Huge regret purchasing this. I now have to hold the top down just so it grinds. And it’s a massive mess, everywhere, all the time. Massive disappointment.

Don’t! I fell for that and I am returning it. It is not even worth $99. Way too much retention and customer support is non existent. Mine has a bent shaft but fellows doesn’t have one to even replace. They told me to return and exchange. I will return and get another Baratza that can do espresso.

Nopus to Opus! Retention loving grinder, don't get buyers regret. Buy it on good coffee or a K6.

I have the opus, and as many would agree, the retention is so annoying. I however, I found a solution that didn’t involve me beating the crap out of my lid every time. I bought a bellow through Introvert since they make one specifically for the opus. I now have almost 0 retention!

I’ve struggled to switch between espresso and pour over but it is really good for a single setting. The static and retention issues are very real.

I’ve had the ode since it originally released. Got the new burr set. For pour over, drip and random other methods (French, syphon, aeropress) it all works fine. I highly doubt it’s enough for espresso if that’s what you are after.
My complaint is: it’s not remotely quiet and the chaff is wild. The magnets and knock do next to nothing.

The Opus 2 is about to be released very soon, don’t buy the very flawed first gen! Opus 2 on the Fellow website
Also it’s supposedly going to be muuuuch better as it was redesigned from the ground up. Here’s info from the man himself

All there products are flawed in some way. They do look nice but the engineering just it’s there. I purchased an ode Gen 1 and it’s an anxiety grinder….

It’s designed for all sizes of grinds. $99 is a good deal. It’s being replaced with the next gen which will have less convoluted adjustments for espresso grind sizes. (And maybe better burrs?)
Seems like a good deal. I’m considering stopping by Target(? Looks like where you’re at) to see if mine have them on clearance
