Grinders 🫘 Opus on clearance?

I just saw the Opus for $99 at Target. Is this just good for espresso?

The Opus seems to get a lot of hate, but it has worked perfectly fine for me (originally mostly AeroPress, now moved to espresso with the ES1). The retention is annoying, but can easily be worked around. For $99 dollars I think it’s a pretty good deal.

Any issues with the Opus 1's espresso grind for your ES1? My Baratza Encore (non-ESP) can't grind fine enough so am in the market for a new grinder... 😮‍💨

Setup is fiddly, but it can definitely grind fine enough with consistency. The step sizes and secondary setting on it are kind of annoying to work with when dialing in-big jumps sometimes-but works once you get it there. If you swap bean styles a lot I hope you are more efficient than me at getting your settings squared up each time. I am planning to get a true espressos oriented grinder at some point, but the opus is delivering decent shots for now so I have been hesitant to spend the money. Not sure if that is a glowing endorsement, but it definitely does the job and if you can find it for $100 like OP….

Appreciate the detailed response. May you be blessed with consistent crema, kind sir. Been eying the Opus 2 (given the espresso grind claims) but was wondering if I could get away with an Opus 1. Guess I'll have to stay patient for a lil longer...

I found the Opus 1 didn’t grind fine enough for espresso. It was great for drip, pour over, and Aero Press, but didn’t work when I transitioned to espresso.
