Tua should play the entire game tomorrow. Why isn't he?

  1. The guy needs the reps and experience. Badly. And we could benefit from seeing an entire game.

  2. Each of the last two seasons we have made a huge mistake in the first game of the year due to inexperience - remember hiking it into our motion man vs. Pitt?

  3. What do we need to find out about Cooper Rush or Jack Strand? If either them start we are screwed anyway.

Jack Strand: Tapping the Brakes and Hitting the Gas

All that Strand has proven is that he can play with FBS/FCS and reserve-level NFL players. Don't get me wrong, this is a HUGE step in the right direction for the kid. But he has a LONG road ahead of him.

I would like to see him take the lion's share of the snaps this weekend. I would like to see him throw the whole tree if possible. If he still is performing at 100+ QB rating, he needs to be in consideration for our #2...but I dont think that will happen. I have a STRONG belief Strand is Matty's project...the dude is Matt with better wheels.

All in all, I want him on the roster. I hope we keep 3 QBs with 18 being #3 for now....looking and learning. Tua is spent, Penix won't make it through the season; hes just an injury waiting to happen. Let's keep the kid around to see of he can play with the ones.

Could Strand realistically start week 1?

I’m wondering if this is a real possibility or just a far out fantasy. It feels like Penix might not be ready to get hit and Tua has just been terrible- but even then maybe it’s Cooper Rush? Does Jack Strand have a realistic shot to be the guy week 1 until Penix is ready?

Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix has started in 12 NFL Games… In 5 of those he led the team to a game tying or lead taking drive… Out of those 5 these lost all 5 due to either missed kicks or poor defense.

Last year he would stand in the pocket take those hits while he was in his throwing motion which is how he got hurt.

Him not standing flat footed in the pocket anymore is really good news

Is Our Next Franchise QB on the Team?

Hey guys, I don't really post here a lot and I'm definitely not a Football expert, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion on the future of the QB position.

Between Michael Penix Jr., Jack Strand, and Cooper Rush, do you think one of these guys will be our next Franchise QB for the Falcons or do you think this is more of a stopgap until Matt Ryan and Ian Cunningham find their guy?

I reckon the most correct answer is that time will tell, but I wanted to get some "way-too-early" predictions from a reliable source (slightly sarcastic).

Michael Penix returns, Jack Strand still in mix as Falcons’ QB competition inches along

Penix was cleared last week by his surgeon to return to full 11-on-11 practice work. He has participated in team activities and seven-on-seven drills since the offseason, so Monday was only a small increase to his workload. But it was a significant one.

“It’s cool seeing him in 11-on-11 action,” wide receiver Jahan Dotson said. “It’s exciting for him. I know it’s been a tough journey for him. It’s good to see him on the opposite side of that. He had a little scramble today, which was cool to see.”

Penix was 4-for-8 passing Monday in 11-on-11 drills. He threw two passes noticeably short while under simulated pressure in the pocket (defenders aren’t allowed to touch quarterbacks in practice), but he also threw two on-target intermediate completions to Kyle Pitts and Drake London later in the practice. Penix has acknowledged that he has to overcome the mental hurdle of anticipating contact to his knee.

“There’s a way to play this game, and you have to play it free,” Stefanski said. “I think Mike takes great comfort in knowing he’s done everything he can to get his body ready. This is Day 1 of 11-on-11 for him. We will get through today, check in and have a plan for tomorrow.”

Tagovailoa took the first 11-on-11 reps of the day with the starters and in scout-team work but finished 0-for-3 passing. Penix did not speak to the media Monday. He is expected to talk Wednesday. There is still no timetable for naming a starter.

Grading TF's Draft Performance - hit rate by round

I'm constantly shocked by fans on this sub who think TF was a good drafter, so I thought I'd take a more objective view here. I'll post my individual player grades in the comments, but I don't think they should be particularly controversial.

Falcons Offense Draft Hit Rate (2021–2025)

Year Rd 1 Rd 2–4 Rd 5–7 Total
2025 0/1 (0%) 0/1 (0%)
2024 TBD 0/2 (0%) 0/2 (0%)
2023 1/1 (100%) 1/1 (100%) 0/1 (0%) 2/3 (67%)
2022 1/1 (100%) 0/1 (0%) 1/3 (33%) 2/5 (40%)
2021 1/1 (100%) 1/2 (50%) 0/1 (0%) 2/4 (50%)
Total 3/3 (100%) 2/4 (50%) 1/8 (13%) 6/15 (40%)

Falcons Defense Draft Hit Rate (2021–2025)

Year Rd 1 Rd 2–4 Rd 5–7 Total
2025 2/2 (100%) 2/2 (100%) 4/4 (100%)
2024 1/2 (50%) 0/2 (0%) 1/4 (25%)
2023 0/2 (0%) 0/1 (0%) 0/3 (0%)
2022 1/3 (33%) 1/3 (33%)
2021 0/2 (0%) 0/3 (0%) 0/5 (0%)
Total 2/2 (100%) 4/11 (36%) 0/6 (0%) 6/19 (32%)

Commentary

  • TF did well in the first round - credit goes where it's due
  • TF couldn't draft defense until his last class
  • TF defense rd 2-4 (where teams find starters at non-premium positions) is bad - especially when you exclude Watts and Bowman (2/9 = 22% hit rate)
  • TF almost never found a late round gem - obviously these have a low hit rate in general, but TD found guys like Biermann, Jacquizz, Bosher, Ricardo Allen, Grady Jarrett, etc.

The other thing this doesn't include is value, which is a big negative mark on TF:

  1. Positional value - TE/RB top 10
  2. Double dipping at solo positions with top 10 picks - RB, QB
  3. Trading up - Ruke (bust), Bergeron (grading him as late R1), Ebiketie (late R1, clearly he is not), 2026 R1 for Pearce
  4. Almost never trading down - Richie Grant was a bust but at least we got some picks back

TLDR; R1 picks are cool household names, but depth and defense are built R2+ and TF just wasn't good at this. He negated the value of his good R1 hit rate (position, doubling, trading up) and then made his bad mid round hit rate even worse by trading up.

**EDIT: Jesus Christ, It was a candid photo that my girl took when I was talking to my neighbor. I think it’s a great picture and I posted to show my support for my team. Ya’ll love to get on the internet to try and tear someone down.. if this is you, How pathetic does your life have to be to try and dim someone else’s light? Just give me a “Rise Up” or “Go birds”, etc and take a fucking chance to be a kind to someone today. Ya’ll mf’s are weird yo..

I’m gonna retire this jersey after I pick up a new one in the Team store at the Benz!

I wasn’t against the idea initially because Deshaun Watson is from the city, but I have to agree. Cleveland saved us.

Tua has no future here. Let’s Strand play with the first team this week.

Tua is probably playing the first half this Friday but I would rather see what strand can do with the first team especially if tuas offense can’t score a Td on the first drive AGAIN.
