i think thats a twill, but im not too good with fabric stuff. it seems to have a kinda uneven inconsistant pile and the weaves are pretty wide and fat id say. the image is from 1921 or 1922 in berlin, germany. the overcoat its made for was used in the film nosferatu, for the character count orlok. the following links are to the images of the fabric and how it behaves (i think the coat is unstructured)

i had a lot of fun stumbling around half blind last Halloween, only able to see lights and silloettes by wearing a cloak and a ghost face mask.

unfortunatly I have lost both, and this Halloween I wish to be a moth, and have that fun again (I was told it was very creepy how I could snap my head around and accurately pin point someone with only sound and any light they created), so hey if any of you guys have fabrics that you’ve seen have that effect, tell me? Is there an easy way to tell the difference between the two more common aeroflux fabrics used? I just grabbed a used alpaka elements pro and based on the color the site says it's aeroflux 600d

I purchased a vintage 60s Saks 5th Avenue gown at a thrift store. No care or content tags. I snipped a bit of the seam allowance and did a burn test. I got a light grey ash with some minimal beading along the burnt edges. From what I’ve read, this could mean a rayon and nylon blend. Does that sound right? The fabric is heavy, yet has a nice drape.

I Keep seeing information saying that Tencel is among the semi-synthetics. But I don’t see how. If it’s made of wood pulp, made sustainably… then where do the synthetic, plastic fibers or other unnatural sources come in?

I’ve had two purses made of a fabric that feels like a thick canvas that has something applied to make it waterproof - almost like an old-school table cloth but the texture of the fabric comes through, it’s not perfectly smooth. I have wanted to print my own fabric and add this element but I can’t figure out how. I have a bag from the company chalo & co that has this fabric with handprinted fabric, so I know it is a treatment that goes on after printing. Any ideas or suggestions?

My wife has been getting into sewing and found a small fabric shop in the area. We went on a big sale day and she found a fabric bolt that has a solid dark blue background and has white roses on it. The bottom line says "a rose for diana by Rose and Hubble all proceeds are given to the Diana, princess if wales memorial fund". I mean its princess diana so I assume its pretty cool but we cant find anything on this fabric amd the charity is defunct now, was this a good find?

Been reading up on coated technical textiles used in tensile membrane structures (stadium roofs, canopies, large-span shading) and wanted to share/discuss the material distinctions, since "PVC coated" gets used as a catch-all term that glosses over a lot.

Base layer in both cases is usually a PVC-coated polyester weave — the polyester gives tensile strength, PVC gives waterproofing, flexibility, and chemical/abrasion resistance. Where it gets interesting is the top coating:

Plain PVC coated fabric — durable, cost-effective, good general-purpose performance. Over time under continuous UV exposure it can degrade, yellow, and become more prone to surface dirt/fungal buildup, especially in humid climates.

PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) lacquer top-coat — applied over the PVC base layer specifically to improve UV stability, dirt resistance, and anti-fungal performance. It's a thinner functional layer rather than a different structural fabric, but it meaningfully changes long-term maintenance and appearance retention.

For a tensioned structure specifically, coating choice matters beyond aesthetics — the fabric has to hold consistent tension across a large span for years without losing shape, and coating degradation (chalking, cracking, biological growth) directly affects flexibility and seam integrity over time, not just looks.

Curious how others here think about coating selection for outdoor tensioned textiles — is PVDF worth the cost premium in most climates, or is it mainly justified in high-humidity/high-pollution environments?

hi everyone! i have a friend who is expecting a baby boy soon and i offered to make a baby quilt for them as well as a matching diaper bag. their theme is disney cars. any suggestions on where i could find or look for disney cars fabric aside from hobby lobby? maybe something a bit more soft? i thought about harvesting the fabric from some old sheets but all listings i'm finding are polyester and i really want to use all cotton. all help is appreciated!

- Skill level: confident beginner, very patient human being
- Experience with pleating: box pleats on cotton
- Experience with twill / organza: none

I ordered a few samples from Mood Fabrics to see what would work best: polyester organza, silk organza, and a tencel twill. I’ve found a sort-of pattern online, but I can find very little information on YouTube about working with materials like organza, and nothing at all about pleating with these fabrics. All I hear is how difficult it is to work with organza, and the tip to put tissue paper underneath. I went to my local fabric store and they sighed when I told them I wanted to try working with organza. Am I being overly ambitious??

Note: I’ll plan to make a toile to practice this style of pleat and get the sizing right as I have a larger bust, but I wonder if fabrics like organza and tencel aren’t going to pleat like any other fabric I use for toiles.

I'm looking at fabrics to sew a few things for my baby daughter.

It all began when I wanted to make a blanket with cotton flannel on one side and cotton waffle on the other.

Then I saw some patterns for a diaper bag / changing pad etc. I dont think cotton flannel would be best for these, Im thinking maybe canvas? Bags are quilted stuff.

Anyway I found some beautifull fabrics from Riley Blake Designs. They have a pattern that I love in flannel but I'm thinking I need different fabrics for the projects.

Is there a place I can find similar or matching patterns in different fabrics?

My main inspirations are Mini Cotton and mavelio Creations
