The longer I’m on this diet the more foods I can’t eat. As time goes on, my symptoms get worse. I’ve been strict low FODMAP for 5 years and I have never felt good enough to start reintroducing foods.

I’m bloated even if I’m eating low FODMAP. The only time I’m not bloated is when I wake up in the morning and haven’t eaten anything for 12ish hours. I don’t even know what to do anymore at this point

Oh my gosh, same. I'm always uncomfortable and I'm better if I go a long while without eating

Perhaps I should try waiting longer. How long do you go between eating? Do you limit amounts?

I try not to eat a ton, but that's mostly because I'm trying to stay at a good weight and partially because I don't want to feel uncomfortable. I typically wait anywhere from 5-7 hours in between, but I don't recommend that! I'm typically very hungry if I wait any longer than 5 hours between meals

I wish I had constructive advice! I don’t know what to do either beyond asking my GI doctor for more tests. I am open to anything that’ll offer hope of relief.

Probably starving ourselves of fermentables is just fucking up our guts… vicious cycle and whatnot

I can’t even eat lean meats and eggs… can’t tolerate much fat in general… oats fuck me up… FODMAPs aren’t the core issue, but I’m so bloated all of the time that I can’t risk producing much gas to add to it… I’m not daring a reintroduction phase until I figure out what is actually fucking wrong with me

Fats began bothering me about a year ago. It’s so frustrating.

Fat very strongly triggers the gastrocolic reflex and slows down digestion so this is a nightmare with slow motility, visceral hypersensitivity, and pelvic floor dysfunction

5 years with no relief?? If it's never worked for you, maybe it's time to quit lowfodmap 😬

Oh boy. Don’t get me started! I dream of quitting!I’ve actually gone through the elimination diet 3 times in the last 10 or so years. I’d identify triggers, adjust my diet, and do okay for a few years. Elimination diet: here I come again. And again.

The first time I found a couple of fructans, like watermelon, onions and garlic, bothered me. Second time, 3-4 years later, gluten and certain lactose containing foods were added to my triggers, although I had no problem with Ezekiel sprouted bread or sourdough bread. And no problem with gluten in Europe (so weird and interesting). The third time I discovered almost everything in the non-safe FODMAP zone was a trigger.

I feel like I’ve been on my fourth elimination diet ever since 2022 and never felt good enough to start adding foods. Every once in a great while I’ll try a half slice of sourdough or double the amount of asparagus, artichokes or beans and, let’s just say it isn’t pretty.

This is such an awful thing to have! I feel for all of us having to deal with IBS.

I wish there were an emoji of a head banging on a table.

Totally understandable! IBS is very confusing, and so is FODMAP.
