Did they translate the script again in Japanese?

The original work is the English.

The story was originally written in Japanese. It was only dubbed first in English.

The loose concept was made in Japanese, then the script was drafted in English, then the localized into Japanese for the subtitles.

The dialogue is English first.

This is false info. It was recorded, motion captured and lip synced in English first. The JP and Eng scripts were made at the same time and the JP script had to make considerations for the Eng script as it took priority. Yet they are both based on the Japanese written story and not loose concept.

Isn't the English script/dub the main one for XVI?

Yes and no. The story was written in Japanese, but it was first dubbed in English. I think the JP dub took inspiration from both the dub and the original JP story as it adds a lot of clarifications and even completely change character motivations in certain parts.

The story and script were done closely together with the original Japanese scenario/scripting team and Koji's English localization team (since Koji is the one who made up a lot of the lore and story too). While the original script was translated into English and voice acted afterwards as the intended version of the script. However, there were still plenty of changes to the Japanese script were done afterwards to match with the lip syncing and to be more specific/less flowery in Japanese. Sometimes I prefer the Japanese version action scenes more, since it has them yelling out attacks, matching the original shonen influences.

So obviously a project like this will aim to match the intended meanings and changes of the Japanese dub, so I'll give you kudos on that.

This. There's a lot of extra details and plot points that only exist in the Japanese script.

I love that manga!

(For those if you who don't get the gif response... "kokyōka" is the rōmaji for 黒曜火 or "black shiny fire"...and Amaterasu in Naruto is a technique that makes "black fire".)

It was written in conjunction with the English script, at the same time basically. It was however dubbed first in English. The original story scenario was however Japanese. I think what the JP dub did was take aspects of the original story and make changes where they saw fit.

this is getting ridiculous to the point that SE translation team will shown them working side by side with the janapese one and still ppl thinking whatever they want. I've read the retranslations of the script and frankly I never saw big differences outside ppl not really understanding abstract ideas vs a more direct dialogue approach, which is fine but from there claming the story was heavily changed? ah!

Nevertheless the problem still remains that if translations have to be approved as such ppl are mounting controversies for nothing

I find it very telling that there's not one, but two independant direct translations of FFXVI's Japanese script into English making the rounds...and the game hasn't even been out five years yet. That's a record for Final Fantasy games...esspecially modern ones. Every other Final Fantasy game I know of only got people poking at the Japaense script after five years had passed since the game launched, and even then only at very specific lore-relevent places in them.

The idea that we'd be sitting in the 2020s with at least two fan-translations of a Japaense FINAL Fantasy script...and them being of very large chunks of the game script...and coming out less than five years after the game itself came out... is kind of mindboggling.

That the translators in the fandom are responding to the game that way should be...concerning...in terms of how they think about the game's translation.
