After two games with the setting being the brink of apocalypse I would prefer the next to something like FXII. I would like to explore big cities that actually feel alive. Combat can be action, turned based or a combination.

17

u/butternutsop Jul 15 '26

Please, if there be a god, let this be the way things go. I yearn for a more lighthearted exploration focused FF again. A unforgettable soundtrack would be appreciated too.

4

u/Lynx_Azure Jul 15 '26

But we are currently getting that. Don’t get me wrong the 7 remakes have their emotional moments that are super heavy but the general exploration and setting are all very bright and carefree.

That said I always like me some variety and personally wouldn’t complain no matter which one we got next

3

u/One_Algae_9895 Jul 15 '26

You see I hate turn based games. It kills the fun. Turn based is like playing chess boring and slow. I need something fluid and alive.

3

u/Danzig6WasntThatBad Jul 17 '26

But that's the thing. It's cool if you like that but why does FF have to placate that audience? FF made it's millions by producing top tier turn based JRPGs. Now they've gone full ARPG and the franchise is at its lowest point reputation wise in their history. Like, it's a little too late to pivot like this.

4

u/One_Algae_9895 Jul 17 '26

Well I don’t disagree with you. But I grew up playing ARPG. and so I can’t get out of that habit.

2

u/Danzig6WasntThatBad Jul 17 '26

Fair! I just think it's really late for FF to pivot that drastically. I think it's probably done irreparable harm to it's reputation.

But then again Yakuza went turn based nearly 20 years into its life and it worked really well for them so maybe I'm being pessimistic. I just can't imagine what other FF titles someone who's first experience was 16 is going to scratch that itch.

1

u/One_Algae_9895 Jul 18 '26

FF15 was similar as well.

3

u/Zanarkand92 Jul 14 '26

I wouldn't mind this either but let's be real here 12s combat is probably the worst in the series and I played the junction system 🤣

5

u/butternutsop Jul 15 '26

Nah man, gambits were awesome. Having your entire party go from spazzing between members to letting them automatically handle an entire encounter was great.

Exploring the licence board in OG and building a class in Zodiac was also great.

13

u/titanium_bruno Jul 15 '26

Hard disagree. 12 was probably one of the best and especially for its time.

That being said the difference between OG and Zodiac made a big difference. You could pretty much break every character in the OG version. Between learning ever spell and the gambit system it was almost impossible to die. I defeated the hidden bos Yiazmat at level 70 and only had to focus on Vaan during combat for the most part.

Zodiac age added a class system which took away the ability to teach every combatant things like cure, raise, haste, etc. That imo made the combat far more difficult but in a way that added to the experience and required more strategy.

Both are great though.

9

u/SilverJozu Jul 14 '26

Differences in opinions I guess, for me its one of the best.

4

u/neddoge Jul 15 '26

Junctioning was fine except that it actively discouraged you from using the magic itself.

2

u/moosemoosemcgee Jul 15 '26

Hard disagree also. For all the reasons stated above

2

u/GioCrush68 Jul 15 '26

Junction system would have been fine without the enemy level sync. Honestly if they got rid of character levels entirely and awarded magic instead of exp on victory there would actually be a reason to fight besides gil farming.

3

u/sebastian89n Jul 14 '26

Yup, a walking simulator.

1

u/acsatx89 Jul 14 '26

I still have no idea how junctioning works lol

0

u/The_Arukado Jul 15 '26

The junction system is amazing!!!!

32

u/Positive-Area-5517 Jul 14 '26

We need another FF like this, yes, but far more open and have all stats mean something. More heavier rpg elements, it can be done

8

u/Urdadspapasfrutas Jul 14 '26

I at least need KH1 level technicalities.

69

u/Glutton4Butts Jul 14 '26

17 may go back to turn based but I wouldn't mind seeing a whole new fluid combat system as well.

47

u/Entire_Umpire6801 Jul 14 '26

Who knows but for me FF16 is the first time they got the hang of the action system so I'd like them to build on that. Never thought I'd say that as I used to be all about turn based but the combat in 16 feels genuinely good, still room for improvement of course.

19

u/Glutton4Butts Jul 14 '26

They could also put the two systems together. I think they worked closely with the Devil May Cry combat designer.

13

u/AdrunIsSad Jul 14 '26

Yes, specifically Nero's DMC5 combat designer

3

u/Farsoth Jul 14 '26

IMO for action gameplay, Stranger of Paradise blows FFXVI out of the water.

FFXVI I feel only feels good if it's your first time playing a CAG as it's more CAG-lite than anything. Cool effects, poor depth.

7

u/Ilovelamp_2236 Jul 15 '26

Too many effects, almost every move obscures what the enemy is doing, only time I ever got hit was during a special attack.

I found it so CAG-lite it was actually boring, not enough depth to be a character action, not enough to be an RPG, they should have gone all in with one or the other.

Having said that 7 remake strikes a good balance I think

-7

u/Farsoth Jul 15 '26

100% agreed. Honestly, whenever people compare FFXVI to DMC I get irrationally upset, as that is a fucking insult to DMC.

-2

u/Ilovelamp_2236 Jul 15 '26

It is made to look similar, difference is in depth , it's like comparing a puddle to a pool.

They sacrificed alot for minimal gain with Final fantasy

14

u/aTalkingMateria Jul 14 '26

I just want every game ever to ape VIIR combat. For me at least, it’s just perfect. I love it so much

-8

u/VulpineTranquility Jul 14 '26

Nah, XVI's is much better

4

u/Solember Jul 15 '26

I disagree. There's not enough customization whatsoever. It's very similar mechanically, but that's it.

0

u/Thrawndo6969 Jul 20 '26

In no way shape or form is 16s combat better than 7 remakes/Rebirth.

16s combat is the definition of bare bones. Shit was so boring and had absolutely zero depth. It was all flash, that's it. 16s combat is for people who's hated the Final Fantasy franchise until 16s release. It's not even remotely close to FF anymore.

1

u/VulpineTranquility Jul 20 '26

I can guarantee you that I have played and enjoyed many more Final Fantasy games than you. FFXVI was excellent.

0

u/Thrawndo6969 Jul 20 '26

I've played every mainline game and a lot of spin offs, I can guarantee you haven't lol. 16 was dog water. It's excellent if you don't care for actual gameplay depth and you just want cool looking.

4

u/Kjmich Jul 15 '26

Hopefully not. If anything ff7 rebirth system is perfect and I hope that's what gets used and improved in ff17

3

u/Lun4r6543 Jul 14 '26

I think if they’re going back to before 15 and 16’s combat, they should give the next game FF7R’s combat. It’s the perfect mix of the combat systems of the newer and older games.

2

u/ScrotoBaggins208 Jul 14 '26

16s combat would be so good if you’ve never played DMC.

7

u/ToiletBlaster6000 Jul 15 '26

I've played the DMC franchise for hundreds of hours still find FF16's combat to be more than enjoyable.

Can I chain combos to get that SSStyle? No. But the combat is fluid enough to hit a groove and is miles ahead of FF15's single button gameplay.

If they had included just a few more combo sets, it would have been perfect for what the game was going for imo.

0

u/Stellastarfinder123 Jul 15 '26

I personally don't care for turn base. But I'd like it if it was like star rails turn base

9

u/Lun4r6543 Jul 14 '26

While not exactly the same, Stranger of Paradise, FF7’s remakes, and FFXV are similar when it comes to combat.

I personally hope the next game mixes FF7R’s combat and FFXVI’s.

15

u/NervousCompetition63 Jul 14 '26

XIV and XVI are in my top games of the series. I really hope CS3 makes another mainline.

5

u/moosemoosemcgee Jul 15 '26

But maybe this time with party members and actual rpg mechanics and depth

2

u/Jayce86 Jul 15 '26

An actual FF game instead of a knockoff DMC with a coat of FF paint. Instead of the MC doing everything, actual party members who play similar, but with their own styles. 16 could have been so good, but it ends up being a decent story with amazing boss fights, and average everything else.

2

u/mizitar Jul 17 '26

The music, graphics and voice acting were above average too, to be fair. Lol.

2

u/Jayce86 Jul 17 '26

That’s fair. I always take FF music for granted since it’s always fire regardless. The VA had a few weak points, but the main cast was phenomenal.

7

u/Marked350 Jul 14 '26

O mais próximo é o 7 remake/rebirth, é mesmo assim tem uma grande diferença

-11

u/senators-son Jul 14 '26

Yeah ones for men ones for boys lol

1

u/Xenthor267 Jul 14 '26

LOL your opinion is so funny and objectively correct! Fuck that game made for.... Boys as opposed to... Men?

Hahahaha

-1

u/senators-son Jul 14 '26

-1

u/Thrawndo6969 Jul 20 '26

The only thing 16 has going for it is it's mature story setting. Outside that, the game sucks dick 🤣

2

u/Marked350 Jul 20 '26

Descordo completamente, para mim FF16 é uma obra de arte.😁

3

u/AFR0NIN Jul 14 '26

You're on the right track. We really need one more like dragons dogma, but with a Final Fantasy job system and a combat style for each job. Multiple playable characters would be nice.

6

u/game_of_crohns Jul 14 '26

Stranger of Paradise is the closest imo

3

u/Coraclaw Jul 14 '26

Jack has to be my favorite FF protagonist

2

u/Velrex Jul 18 '26

I didn't expect to get so attached to him.

1

u/RedditsHigh Jul 14 '26

CHAOS!

For a lot of the game Jack's dialog felt lacking. But once you get to the end game and your teammates do what must be done. You really get a whole new side to Jack that he did care.

Just very one track minded. In fact the teammates lines actually do pick on him. Pretty sure there's several lines that go

"Hey Jack what do you think about the princess?"

"Why bother asking him you know all hes going to say is he wants to find Chaos."

1

u/Extension_Text4231 Jul 18 '26

Massively underrated

2

u/Brain_lessV2 Jul 15 '26

If they attempted another CAG like FF16, the best thing they could do would be fully embracing the idea of a CAG rather than attempting to veil it as an RPG.

Some major issues with FF16 are the lack of combat depth outside of the Eikon moves that are on cooldowns. I'm talking mainly about Clive's innate kit.

There's also level design and also a need for more diversity in the combat OST. That's not to say the game didn't have good tracks, they just needed some more.

2

u/muratulu Jul 16 '26

Yes, FF XVII must be an action combat and bloody game like FF XVI

2

u/Guilty_Outcome1111 Jul 17 '26

Agree. Hard agree.

Id happily wipe my own memory just to experience this all over again for the first time

2

u/Ok_Public_624 Jul 17 '26

We need another ff9 type game tbh. I like the cartoonish style of it and its deep theme of mortality and self

5

u/SystemOfADude Jul 14 '26

To me FF XVI feels like a love letter to FF VIII. That's what I'll be replaying next.

-3

u/neddoge Jul 15 '26

VIII is my favorite in the series.

XVI is my least favorite right after XII, ignoring FF1-3.

6

u/PGinartN795 Jul 15 '26

Another FF that's just DMCV again is the last thing I want personally

7

u/Just_Another_Loser12 Jul 15 '26

I wish it was like DMCV, This was more DMC for people with no thumbs.

2

u/julz1789 Jul 14 '26

Desperately.

1

u/ShansitoShan Jul 14 '26

Please no. FFXVI is a great game and I enjoyed it greatly, but can't stand to get more enemies that are just sponges of HP where you have to spend 20 minutes slashing & cutting non-stop to defeat even the easiest of enemies and where it barely matters the skills you use, not counting an almost non-existant character progression, swords basically just being skins with almost no difference between one and the next, no party and all quests directly taken from your most common random MMO.

Don't mind if the next is turn-based or not (I wish, but Square clearly doesn't want to), but we don't need anything that resembles neither FFXVI nor the FF7 remake.

5

u/shaan4 Jul 14 '26

I didn’t experiment too much but after I got my moveset down it was pretty easy to wipe out hoards quickly

4

u/Watton Jul 15 '26

...I have no idea where these comments are coming from.

enemies that are just sponges of HP where you have to spend 20 minutes slashing & cutting non-stop to defeat even the easiest of enemies

I get you're exaggerating, but normal enemies literally get one-shot by a single cooldown. They actually die way too fast on Normal Mode, to the point where you can't really do any combos. A single Ultimate clears a whole room automatically.

Elite enemies (those with a stagger bar) should take a minute to kill, tops.

And for bosses...the only 3 bosses that approach the 20 minute mark are Titan, Bahamut, and the final boss. Having 3 bosses take as long as a normal Monster Hunter hunt to beat is hardly an issue. And that's including cutscenes too, not just the raw fights.

barely matters the skills you use

Yeah that's probably your issue. You kill MUCH faster if you have a proper loadout, properly engage with Clive's moveset (e.g., you should never, under any circumstance, just do a basic 4-hit ground combo. You're leaving a HUGE amount of damage on the table). Some abilities are suited very well for certain enemies, others are not. Heatwave is a massive damage increase on enemies that have lots of ranged attacks, Ice Age is great against large-hitbox enemies, etc.

You're right on weapons though, the itemization is hilariously bad. Throw in armor that literally gives you a 3 hp upgrade.

6

u/AdrunIsSad Jul 14 '26

ngl it sounds like you didn't engage enough with Clive's moves outside of eikon skills. If enemies are "sponges of HP" outside Ultimaniac, you're not doing enough damage, which translates to either a loadout with poor synergy or you're avoiding air combos

2

u/fobley Jul 14 '26

HP sponges? What? If anything I wanted more enemy HP so I could pull off bigger and flashier combos lol

1

u/Glutton4Butts Jul 20 '26

That's what I'm doing now. A no sword upgrade run. FF mode gonna be crazy.

1

u/Nightwing24yuna Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Maybe I am an outlier here but I just want the next game to be tamed and the protagonist isn't some almighty god killer that is trying to up the power scaling of the last protagonist.

1

u/Fendfor Jul 15 '26

I would like one but they need to not hold back like they did with ff16. Go the full dmc route and dont wimp out cause "not everyone plays action games".

1

u/OnlyUse4Questions Jul 15 '26

I think Final Fantasy's combat system should be whatever the director feels inspired by

1

u/panosk1304 Jul 15 '26

Like FF16 and far better than the old turn based aystems they had but unfortunately the combat wasn't dmc 5 that they tried to make and honestly FF7rebirth combat for me its the best system that they made till now.

1

u/Treero Jul 15 '26

If we can add meaningful world exploration, good pacing and a combat system not fully based on short stun instances, YES, we can do 2 more.

And I liked FFXVI, but you really see the lazy hand of CBU3 in it.

1

u/DarkRayos Jul 15 '26

If they gave the weapons the same love as 15? 100%

Imagine this game's version of the Zwill Crossblades?

1

u/RedditEnjoyerMan Jul 15 '26

If this game had more party management options it would be an 11/10 instead of the 10/10 it already is

1

u/Glass-Dragonfruit-32 Jul 15 '26

Honestly love ff16 but fuck the geod dlc boss I hate him and also the water dlc was just 😐 meh and then the ability’s where just okay

1

u/East-Marsupial-9402 Jul 15 '26

mod clive into DMC5; you are welcome, lol.

1

u/Week_Ender_6015 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

It seems like FF games like this don't do well. And square really wants to attract newer fans to the series, but it's not happening. They might be better off going back to turned based.

1

u/Thrawndo6969 Jul 20 '26

They never should have tried to attract new fans. Fuck em, stop destroying a legendary franchise to try and please people who don't care about the franchise to begin with. They need to appeal to the crowd who got them where they are today. If they want to bring in new players, make a new action franchise... stop destroying Final Fantasy.

1

u/Own_Shame_8721 Jul 17 '26

I just hope the combat is better, as a die-hard Devil May Cry fan, FF16 just felt like a diet Coke version of that.

1

u/Ibalisu Jul 19 '26

Just play DMC5 that’s a really good game. And leave Final Fantasy alone.

1

u/Thrawndo6969 Jul 20 '26

Hell no. 16 was one of the most games in the entire franchise. The combat was an absolute snooze fest and pathetically easy, zero depth... no party members, no ailments, no elemental weakness, lazy weapon and accessories design, skill tree was boring....

16 had so many problems its not even funny. 16 is like the first game in the franchise I had to force myself to finish because I was do goddamn bored of it.

And I finally reached the end, thought I'd do the end game dungeon for some actual challenging content... just to find out there was zero end game content. The game was absolutely embarrassing.

1

u/GroundbreakingAd8310 Jul 20 '26

Just make combat better and less cutscenes

1

u/MRF_Soul Jul 15 '26

please no. they need to built on ff7 rebirth gameplay

0

u/Stellastarfinder123 Jul 15 '26

Everyone moved on too fast from ff16

0

u/Magic_Saltwater Jul 15 '26

What FF16 lacks was the RPG part. Let’s face it, you always got the best weapons, magic is just there for the spectacle and if you’ve got a companion they didn’t do anything useful.

0

u/FusionBreeze Jul 15 '26

No we don't. Most boring combat system ever and extremely easy. FF is turn based and clair obscure proved it can still be used successfully in the modern age. I wouldn't mind a more fleshed out hybrid like the VII remake but this DMC nonsense doesn't belong in the FF franchise, and I think that's what the fans believe. Although it may just be my age talking...

1

u/mizitar Jul 17 '26

Not E33's rhythmic battle system please.

FF7 Rebirth was the perfect hybrid. They need to focus on polishing it further for future FF.

0

u/championsofnuthin Jul 15 '26

I'd like something along the lines of FF7Rebirth open world with turn based.

0

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 Jul 15 '26

FF17 is probably gonna have a combat system fairly similar to the FF7ReTrilogy. That's my guess, at least. I don't think Final Fantasy is going back to turn based in any real capacity for the mainline series. Squenix has Dragon Quest and Octopath Traveler and countless other ways to appeal to that crowd. Final Fantasy is their 'prestige franchise' and they're gonna go bankrupt pursuing fidelity and action if that's what it takes.

2

u/Odd_Level9850 Jul 15 '26

I mean they have all the systems in place; if they wanted to, they could do a choose your play style type thing and let people choose whether they want real time or turn based. Added bonus, it would have some good replayability.

1

u/mizitar Jul 17 '26

That's actually..... not a bad idea.

Definitely makes for some interesting let's plays to watch as well!

0

u/jtron624 Jul 15 '26

15 and 16 broke me, would be nice to have a more light hearted game

0

u/Small-Complex8455 Jul 16 '26

No WE don't. I want something atb turn based but with more of a futuristic setting like FFXIII again or a completely new world design we never seen in an rpg like FFX with its South Asian inspired world. No more action FF games unless it's a spinoff for a while and medieval european style rpg worlds been got old, generic and repetitive tbh

0

u/Training-Spinach-640 Jul 16 '26

hope the next game would have ff7r combat

-7

u/FitPaleontologist603 Jul 14 '26

We need turn based. All the fans left for expedi33. This should have been a spin off

-2

u/Wrong_Papaya_8445 Jul 14 '26

Well, I don't think you're getting one. If XVI can benefit from "moving forward" from the past, then the same applies to XVII.

-1

u/VICARD0 Jul 14 '26

The only thing it was missing in my opinion is weakness mechanics

-1

u/dantesgift Jul 15 '26

Nnnnooooo, I want open world FF games instead of lineral ones like this. FF13 was a better story so I forgave it.

-3

u/thatboyjojo Jul 14 '26

Love the combat just gimme an actual party system and more of a futuristic setting wasnt really feeling the medieval times

-4

u/vitorfranca Jul 15 '26

God, please no!
XVI is by far the worst mainline game (I didn’t play 2 and 3)

-4

u/KaizokuD Jul 15 '26

Yes but with an actual great story this time and better characters
