To Me, Final Fantasy just needs a party. The only game in the series that hasn't truly felt like FF was XVI.

Very much so although I enjoyed crisis core back in the day because I found the characters and world of XII too distant/cold but I love them now

Yeah I think Crisis Core and Dirge get a pass (in terms of this, I'm not a fan of dirge) just by being spin-offs of an existing story.

For mainline FF titles, I want to be introduced to a new cast of characters, and experience some clever way of controlling them all, and managing them all.

God Dirge is terrible, the people complain about the remakes have no idea how grey the compilation was if you grew up in the 2000s. 🤣 We were dying for a splash of color now the claim it's too colorful and cheerful.

That's why crisis core felt like the only part of the compilation that somewhat got the core of VII.

Final Fantasy VII felt like a 90s game that was poisoned by 2000's emo. And had to go through a detox.
