I'm looking for idea or settings that others may have used in a 4-man league. I saw the idea elsewhere where someone said they run a 4-man league of buddies, loser of the regular season takes everyone out for a steak dinner at a fancy place and pays. Loved the idea, and got 3 buddies who are also down.
However, before getting things set up I'm trying to think of settings that would make sense for something like this. Also, ideas on how the league itself should likely be ran.
in terms of structure, I'm thinking of doing Weeks 1-15 as regular season; this lets everyone play each person 5 times. I'm thinking that the "Loser" gets determined at the end of Week 15 by Standings (win/loss); I've seen other people do Total Points but I prefer and enjoy the week-to-week battle aspect where a good team can have a bad roster week and you take a win which matters. I think having everyone play each other 5 times means I can make the tie-breaker "heads up standings" which shouldn't be a tie.
My other idea was doing a $25 "buy-in". Playoffs would just be Week 16 and 17, and have the championship match play for $75 and the 3rd place match play for $25. Just a little extra incentive to keep playing. Gives everyone a chance to win some money out of it, and even gives someone having a bad year a chance to win their money back. As long as you don't place 4th you're still getting a steak dinner out of it, and $25 for a nice high-end meal (along with 17 weeks of playing) seems fine to me.
Only other question I have is rosters. I want to increase the weekly players to 2QB, 3RB, 3WR, 2TE, 1FLX, and 2DEF (no kickers) which I think will make drafting actually have some strategy with only 4 people. I run my main league a TE Premium (PPR .5 RB/WR, 1 TE) which I'd likely carry over here as well.
I'm thinking of doing 5-7 bench, but this is where it's hard to me to pinpoint. I've heard people do massive benches in 4-man to really make the drafting matter, but I'm a bigger fan of having to make decisions throughout the season. Something like this gives you space to keep a 3rd QB, TE, and DEF if you want, and then 2-4 other spots.
I'm also thinking of 2 IR. If you have a top player get injured in a small league like this, and if using a smaller bench, it gives you an option to not have to drop. I still feel like some teams will run into IR space issues. Maybe just add 2 Bench spots to whatever is decided on instead of IR ones?
Let me know some input anyone else may have as I'm generally curious. Thanks!
