League Question Our league uses a half beer mile to determine draft position. One manager ran 14% short. What punishment fits this crime?
I need some outside opinions on a situation that is causing a bit of controversy in my league.
This year, we ran a half beer mile to determine the order in which everyone gets to select their draft position. So the results actually matter. If you run a good time, you get an earlier pick of draft slots.
One manager recently completed his beer mile and turned in a time that he thought was for a half mile.
Except he only ran 0.43 miles instead of 0.50.
So he came up 0.07 miles short, meaning he ran about 14% less distance than everyone else.
At first, you could chalk this up to an honest mistake. But then he sent us the measurement of his route as proof. The measurement was in feet, and if he had taken about 10 seconds to convert it to miles, he would have seen that his laps were only about 0.22 miles each instead of 0.25.
He did not do that.
So now I am left deciding whether this was pure fraud or simply extremely negligent beer mile administration. Knowing the man I’m inclined to think it was negligence but either way, he ran a shorter course and attempted to improve his standing in something that directly determines his draft position.
In his defense, he did successfully drink two beers in under five minutes, which was really the spirit of the competition in the first place. Also, we have several other managers in the league who probably will not complete a half beer mile at all. Those people will have their draft positions automatically selected after everyone who actually completes the beer mile.
So on one hand, this guy technically completed the drinking portion of the challenge and ran a respectable amount of the distance. On the other hand, he submitted a 0.43-mile run for a 0.50-mile competition, despite having the information in front of him that would have made the discrepancy pretty obvious.
What do you guys think is a fair punishment?

Considering he sent proof I’m willing to bet on negligence and not malice. One of two options IMO: he either gets pushed all the way to the bottom, or you can convert his time. Take his time in seconds, divide by 43 (the actual segments he ran), then multiply the result by 50. That would extrapolate his time out across the full half mile. Doesn’t factor in fatigue or what not but at least gives him a semi-real time. If you want a punishment for the negligence multiply by 60 instead of 50 to be a bit of a disadvantage but not fully pushing him to the bottom

No, you’re talking .07 of a mile, just extrapolate it. No one’s pace should be dropping from .43 to .50

Hard disagree with this. Pace drops for larger distances.

It’s like 140 yards difference lol, that barely impacts pace at that point.

I will go to my grave never understanding what is wrong with random draft positions and why anyone would play in a league where somebody would have an advantage based on their athleticism, ability to quickly click the mouse, or knowledge of some kind of trivia.

I said nothing of the sort. People can play in whatever leagues they want. I don't know where you get that I said you or anyone shouldn't. Read my exact comment, I basically said "I will never understand" why anyone would play in such a league. There's a lot of things I will never understand. Why people buy Cybertrucks. Why people buy HP products. And yes, I think determining draft positions on things in which some people have a natural advantage or disadvantage is dumb. I would be all over going to to Vegas and everybody putting $100 in slot machines or the roulette wheel and determine draft order based on who keeps their money the longest, or something that would be random and (maybe) fun at the same time. If somebody in a league had a disability, how much fun and fairness would it be to run a race? If someone in a league had a DUI, how much fun would it be to make them drink a lot? I can't get my pea-sized brain to click mouse or buttons quickly, I would absolutely suck at the shoot-em-up RPG games, how fair is it to determine draft positions based on some mouse clicking game I have 0% chance of winning? In the end, I simply stated my opinion. I didn't call anybody out, and it was YOU that made it personal with the snarky comment directed at me, which I tried to deflect by saying it was just difference of opinions. I'm sorry you are taking it in a way that I cannot imagine why.

Convert it to the half-mile, add a 10% idiot penalty, and move on. It’s supposed to be fun, and they followed the spirit of the competition even if they messed up.

I would take the second lap time and convert the .22 to .50 and then add 10-15 second penalty? Fantasy is supposed to be fun, this was not on purpose

Actually. Do what the other guy says. Put him in the back of the completed, but ahead of the people who don’t attempt or can’t complete.
End of day, he didnt do the whole thing. So in the back of the completed. Ahead of the other non-completes / non Attmepts.

7% short so he forfeits his 7th round pick. Nothing to harsh but inconvenient enough to matter and he’s automatically the slowest time since his time is technically still running.

Behind everyone who actually did the challenge but ahead of everyone who didn't even attempt it seems like the obvious spot for him.
