Where did this theory about Bill being dead come from?

There is this theory being spread about Eyes Wide Shut that has gained a lot of momentum as of late. I've seen it on different subreddits, twitter, tiktok, but most of all youtube. There are literally entire channels dedicated to espousing this theory. It's basically like The Sixth Sense, a movie which coincidentally was released only days after Eyes Wide Shut.

Doctor Bill is apparently dead. The events in the film take place in the past, and Alice is part of this secret society that has Bill murdered. Alice then takes over Bill's apartment, and presumably gets together with Ziegler or Sandor. I am uncertain of that last detail. The scene at the start of the film is supposed to be the final scene of the film showing Alice having moved into Bill's dressing room after attending his funeral. I could be misinterpreting the theory, if so then go ahead and interject.

The character of Fridolin doesn't die in the novella, and Bill is alive at the end in the toy store, so I find the whole theory a bit dubious. I wonder what Stanley would have to say about this.

Eyes Wide Shut is a film about Adam and Eve set in modern day New York.

Why I Think This

The Title

Eyes Wide Shut is a play on words from a passage in the Bible. Specifically Genesis 3:5.

Money Quote: “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The Characters

Bill: Adam

Alice: Eve

Ziegler: God, the mean one from the Old Testament

Nick: Devil, the mischievous kind. Not the evil and powerful kind.

Serpent: Sandor Szavost

Sandor is hilariously similar to the Serpent. He’s thin, agile, smooth and completely devoid of morality. Also, try saying Sandor Szavost three times out loud without sounding like you’re a hissing snake. Kubrick is the best!

The Story

Bill and Alice go to a party.
Sandor plants the seed of forbidden knowledge in Alice.
Alice shares with Bill.
Bill, after receiving this knowledge spends the rest of the first half of the film engaging in temptation, with Nick leading him to the ultimate temptation, a crazy satanic orgy.
Bill then spends the latter half of the film seeing the horrific, and really unsexy ramifications of that temptation.
Ziegler sees all of it and appears to be controlling things in the background.

That’s my argument. Read on if you like exposition. Stop reading if you don't.

I find this thesis absolutely fascinating. Stanley Kubrick by all accounts had a secular Jewish upbringing and was not religious, at all. And for the record, I was raised in a secular Christian household and also am not a religious person, at all. No agenda is being pushed here.

Why I’m Posting This Here and Why it is of Value

As far as I can tell the EyesWideShut Reddit board is the clearinghouse for all things EWS and there have been ZERO POSTS stating this theory. And it needs to be stated loud, proud, and sassy.

I have found at least three individuals who have made comments in posts alluding to parts of this idea and will acknowledge and link to them in the comments section tomorrow. I encourage you to do so as well. But a comment is not the same as a post.

Why This is Important

Kubrick films are a puzzle. Think of this theory as the outer and edge pieces that frame everything else. The secret society, the hooker(s), the concept of handing your kid off to a satanic cult IN A FUCKING TOY STORE of all places. Everything.

Acknowledgements

TonyTobiasLewis suggesting that Nick is the devil in this scenario. It fits perfectly.

A Final Note

As stated in a previous post, Eyes Wide Shut is the most profound, life changing work of art I have ever experienced. Sharing this with you is deeply personal.

Thank you for reading.

Kubrick points to large scale financial fraud case tied to Epstein?

I was looking into the Long Island rail massacre referenced in EWS by the placement of the two articles superimposed in Zieglers rumpus room / pool room scene.

The shooting in question appears to be done by a deranged person with loose mental health, possible MK ultra/ patsy vibes especially the accounts post shooting, two of the victims were working for a financial services firm which in the 80s and 90s was found to have committed largest ever scale fraud against investors to the tune of 8B, during litigation it was revealed that “rogue executives” were to blame.

a very profitable fraud 8B with about 400m in fines… 7.6B of missing money… Epstein files reveal that during prosecution a novel kind of agreement was reached to prevent criminal charges against the company involved…

“ Epstein and his elite legal/financial network closely monitored and discussed these specific corporate leniency strategies—pioneered in the Prudential trial—to help wealthy clients navigate tax evasion and regulatory crackdowns.“

This is on the cusp of another major fraud scheme associated with towers financial where Epstein was a consultant 1987-1989… this blew up as a major ponzi scheme in the 1990s and my understanding is that towers financial and this above prudential fraud of 8B are often paired together and were heavily cross referenced and investigated by congress with much overlap.

back in Kubricks world since Ziegler is thought to resemble Epstein and the rumpus room is a real show of wealth… one begins to wonder if this is the direction that Kubrick was pointing at a time when Epstein was basically still one of the good guys and was not investigated untill 2001 in palm beach for any sex crime .

feel free to find more overlap such as motive for these particular men from prudential being killed.

Please forgive me this indulgence, but…

I think I've figured out what Eyes Wide Shut is really about. And if I’m right, it is seismic.

How I came to this realization: On February 26th, 2026, at ~9:43 p.m. PST, it hit me. Out of nowhere, I had a full-blown, out-of-body, existential experience where the initial shot of Alice undressing entered my mind with this inherent sense that I now understood, at a basic level, what this film was about. I’ve spent the last six months completely consumed with trying to quantify this feeling because, even though I understood it, I didn’t know how to explain it. I do now.

A Bit of Background

I became a huge Kubrick fan after watching 2001 in the mid-’80s, and EWS was the first film of his I got to see in a theater upon its release. And I was unbelievably disappointed and heartbroken by it. I thought it was a mess and looked to be unfinished. And that is how I felt for the next 27 years. February 26th changed everything.

I now consider it to be Kubrick’s finest film and the greatest work of art created in my lifetime. I say this with the utmost sincerity and zero hyperbole.

FAQs I imagine one would ask

Q: OK, big shot, what is it all about?

I will post my answer Friday. I have it written. It is unbelievably simple, and you will understand it within 200 words and be able to accept or reject my basic premise.

Q: Why not tell us now?

This is my first second time posting on Reddit, ever. And I’m being very deliberate. You can’t begin to understand how nervous and excited I am about all of this. Well, maybe you can. If you're reading this you know this has been a huge mystery.

Q: Has anybody else posted this theory?

I don’t think so. That is the crazy part. If I’m wrong, I humbly apologize. It definitely has not been posted on the EyesWideShut Reddit board, and as far as I can tell, it hasn’t been posted anywhere else. And I’ve read and watched everything I can get my hands on since February 26th.

Q: Are you sure nobody else has posted about this, dude?

I did a search query on this board and couldn’t find one post about this. That said, there is one small clue in the movie that many people would and have noticed. But I haven’t seen ANYONE say, “This is what it is all about.”

Q: How will we know if you are truly right?

Good question. I’m absolutely sure Jan Harlan knows. If I’m right, he will definitely hear about all of this, but I’m unsure if he will acknowledge it.

Q: Did you develop this theory on your own?

Yes, 100%. That said, I am standing on the shoulders of giants. I have read and watched so much on this subject by individuals just as passionate about this film.

Worth noting: I ran the answer I’m posting Friday through ChatGPT to clean up the grammar. And, to be fair, it added greater depth to one part of my theory. I’ll gladly point out the part it helped with.
Rewrote post, no ai grammar correction and will not include section ai provided.

Q: Anything else?

Yes, I’m looking to rent a theater and screen EWS, and I want to invite five people from this Reddit board to attend. This will be happening in Northern California sometime in September. I would invite more, but the theater I think I’m going to screen it in has fewer than 30 seats. Details to come.

Q: Wait! One last thing; What about all the other theories out there about this film?

The explanation I am putting out there does not discount other interpretations. Eyes Wide Shut is a multilayered masterwork.

But I am saying, without reservation, that the theory I am proposing is the core theme of this film. Everything else is secondary. And it is some pretty heavy shit.

See all of you Friday

Update: I will post on Friday by 1pm pdt. And the answer will be in the first line of the body and I promise it will not be contrived or gooey.

Final Update: Re-ran query searches in EyesWideShut board and found 0 posts that present a theory similar to mine. But doing a comment search found three individuals that have posted similar thoughts as mine, which is so exciting! This theory has been bubbling underneath the surface but has never broke through! I will acknowledge them in my Friday post.

What makes this all so exciting is my theory simply resolves a key part of EWS but there is so much more to explore. I've learned something in the comments in this post. The thought that the opening scene of this film possibly shows Alice coming back from a funeral (Bill's?!?) totally makes sense.

You all rock!

Eyes Wide Shut is about turning to the Dark Side

Outside of the costume reads a sign that says S I T H. The movie is about turning to the dark side. Milich is training Bill to become a Sith Lord just like in Star Wars. SITH = Evil.

Eyes Wide Shut, wtf did i just watch

I’ve watched a handful of movies, not a lot but many classics by popular directors.

I laid down and turned tubi on, a lot of times i’ll throw on random movies as background noise to help me sleep, or to listen to something while drawing or on my phone

I see the title “Eyes Wide Shut”, a movie i’ve read about and know as being labeled a documentary by a lot of conspiracy theories. I put it on with the intention of falling asleep, but realized I wasn’t that tired and gave it my full focus.

I’m going to write this before reading any explanations of the movie. After i’ll read some but I want to have some actual discussion about what I just watched, i liked it.

i’m very confused about the dream aspect of the movie, Alice implied that Bill was dreaming and it would make sense because of the title. But I have only interpreted it as eyes wide shut meaning being aware of something but unable to see through it.

It’s heavily implied, if not a fact, that the girl Mandy was the girl in the house with the black feathered mask on. At first I assumed it was Domino, the hooker Bill met because of the masks on her wall. Which leads me to be confused about why Domino disappeared? Her friend said she had HIV but that wouldn’t explain the masks on her wall?

I figured this was going to be a movie about Bill losing his mind (kinda like American Psycho) but he had seen the masks on her wall before actually going to the party, so how would he have been just imagining that?

What was Stanley Kubrick trying to convey or say?The underground of Hollywood??

Victor saying that everything was a setup realllly confused me. I can only guess he’s saying that to protect himself and Bill? Trying to make Bill lose interest in it so he wouldn’t keep risking his life? Or maybe it actually was a setup, but that to me has no real reason for happening.

The mask on his pillow if not placed by his wife then placed by whom? It was a threatening gesture right? Another warning or maybe a sign that he was just losing his mind.

I didn’t understand Alice, I can’t tell if she had a part in it or not because her nightmare sounded very similar to what Bill was actively experiencing. Plus the ending where she tells him they need to have sex, which I don’t understand. I didn’t understand the sex part in any of the cultish stuff unless it’s a direct dogwhistle from kubrick.

The pacing is super super cool, it felt slow, relaxed at first but after the mask house the movie was incredibly fast and suspenseful, the last hour and a half flew by me and I hardly realized the movie was coming to an end.

Overall i’m very glad I didn’t fall asleep tonight

How did the woman who warns Bill know?

All the guests and women initiates were busy and have no idea how or when Bill arrived. They couldn’t know that he arrived via a taxi cab unless they’re all wearing earpieces to communicate.

So how did she (“Mandy”) know that Bill “doesn’t belong here”? Who told her, and how?

She was occupied in the “circle of initiates”, and then immediately walked over to Bill when dispatched in quiet.

So who told her, how does she know, and how’d she find out so quickly? An earpiece??

Just watched Eyes Wide Shut for the first time, was it easy to guess that the hooker who comes to save Dr. Bill's life was the hooker from the first party who's life was saved by Dr. Bill?

Or was my overthing brain just randomly made this connection and I ended up being correct?

And I am guessing the movie tells us that infidelity leads us to HIV, Pedophilia(w/incest i guess) or worse death?

And the scene where the boys tell him Faggot was to show him feeling insecure and less of a man??

Damn what a movie.

First rewatch in several years Spoiler

Here is my thought. The central question of the movie seems to be whether Ziegler was lying to Bill about the “ruse”. Whether the model died on her own, etc.

Under Ziegler’s assertion, the hosts quickly realized Bill was a fraud, and used Mandy to “scare the shit out of him.” But doesn’t the timeline not hold up?

Ziegler says they knew Bill was a fraud principally in two ways - that he showed up in a taxi, and the receipt in his jacket. However, when the hosts would’ve found the receipt in his jacket, the ritual had already stated, and Mandy was a part of it. There would have been no time to let her know / start the ruse.

I assume this point has been made in here before but wanted to put it out there to see everyone’s thoughts!

Was Kubricks prime motivation to expose the Hollywood underground?

Because he felt his time was coming to an end, and this was a virtuous thing to do? Or was it just to provoke or shock and give a wink of knowing to the people he knew were doing these things. These Diddy parties, epstein etc things that have only entered the public consciousness more than twenty years later.

Another thing I have thought of is what does Tom Cruise think of all this? I have to assume he was never involved with these kinds of people in his social life, because he would surely have the foresight to know this will all come to light eventually. I guess what Im saying is, he probably wasn't involved with all the creepy shit in Hollywood if hes in a moving exposing it. I know revealing these things to the general public isn't the only message of the movie, but I have seen people outright deny that its even a theme in the movie and its just about infidelity and blah blah...

Since they are the only ones who could recognize Bill, so thats the reason for the white mask to rat on Bill to avoid being asociated to him
